Memphis is an idea city that is known for innovation in the areas of music, transportation, logistics and medicine, to name a few.

People come to Memphis to tap into that creativity and challenge the established way of doing things. Memphis is a city that dared to build a railroad bridge across the mighty Mississippi River. Memphis is where Danny Thomas came to build St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital because he dreamed of finding a cure for childhood cancer. And Memphis is where FedEx founder Fred Smith decided to set up shop when he took on the U.S. Post Office by inventing the idea of overnight delivery.

The University that shares this famous city’s name also shares its entrepreneurial spirit. In the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis, we are committed to finding unique ways to solve problems that affect people’s lives. We are establishing a culture where creativity and entrepreneurship are our way of life—and it shows. Herff attracts the best and the brightest. You’ll Outside the classroom, there’s never a shortage of things to do on campus and around the city. Get involved in any of our 200+ student organizations, like student government, honors societies, Greek Life and community service programs, along with countless other activities. Within Herff, there are several student organizations just for engineering students: the Engineering Student Council, the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.

There’s so much to do here on any given day. Something really amazing is going on in the city of Memphis right now.

Our restaurant scene is exploding into a foodie paradise. You can hear live music any day of the week. Bike, walk or run on Greenline trails that connect every part of the city. Hit up Shelby Farms, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. And then unwind at nighttime hotspots like CooperYoung, Overton Square and Broad Avenue Arts District.

ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES This campus bleeds blue— Tiger Blue. We’re a Division I school with top-ranked sports teams, and we’re proud of it. On any given day, you can watch the Tigers compete (students get in free!). Intramural and clubs sports are a really big deal here, too.

If you can’t find something to do here, you’re not trying hard enough.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT One of the coolest things about being at Herff is the chance to get a spot in our Engineering Living Learning Community (ELLC), located in UofM’s newest residence facility, Centennial Place. When you live in our ELLC, you get peer mentors whose job is to help you navigate your first year. You gain instant access to all kinds of networking and career opportunities. Plus, you get to reside with other students who eat, sleep and breathe engineering. It’s a tight community, with dedicated computer facilities and study lounges just for Herff students. It pays off, too—ELLC residents tend to have higher GPAs and graduations rates.

Our Cooperative Education/ Internship program is renowned for providing students with relevant, paid experience. In fact, U.S. News & World Report ranks UofM in the Top 10 nationally for internships.

So what’s in it for you?

The Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) considers three semesters of co-op coursework equivalent to one year’s worth of professional work experience.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Biomedical engineers use technology and biological sciences to solve health problems. They do things like design joint replacement implants, develop life-saving tools, and discover new ways to deliver drugs to fight disease.

Start solving health problems in Herff’s biomed lab. Grow your own cells on a template to see how you might heal different parts of the body. Right now, we’re developing a device that guides the treatment of septic shock better than ever before. Sound unbelievable? It’s not. Every day, Herff students bring new ideas to the table and push the field of biomedical research further.

First thought of any engineer: Everything can be improved. That’s why civil engineers spend their days analyzing the stuff most of us take for granted—like how to reduce pollution, strengthen bridges or improve roadways. They literally shape the world we live in.

At Herff, we’ll help you dive deep into big-picture thinking. Because around here, “good enough” isn’t good enough. We don’t want you to reduce pollution, we want you to reduce pollution and improve roadways at the same time. Right now, we’re designing structures to withstand natural disasters and save countless lives. How’s that for improvement?

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mechanical engineers contribute to society and economy in many areas—energy, manufacturing, transportation systems, defense, aerospace, robots and unmanned vehicles, air-conditioning and refrigeration, medical devices and many others. In other words, the majority of the products you use every single day are all made possible by mechanical engineers. Nearly 20 percent of the nearly 3 million engineers in the United States are mechanical engineers.

Hit the ground running with one of the broadest skill sets in engineering. Mechanical engineers use their breadth of knowledge, versatility, creativity and team-working skills to build new products and systems. All those cool things you read about, like establishing colonies on the moon and Mars, 3-D printing of biomedical implants or building the next-generation aircraft and automobile engines? They’re all happening right here at Herff. Build medical devices. Create renewable energy systems—wind and solar. Design and test new aerospace engines and propulsion systems. Get your feet wet testing turbines in the Mississippi River. The possibilities are endless.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Engineering Technology is all about using and understanding the equipment and concepts to implement engineering designs—the machines, computers and code that bridge the gap between ideas and reality. Engineering technologists work with robotics, computerized machine tools and welding. They also use plasma cutters and lasers. ET encompasses tons of areas within engineering, like networking, databases, project management, quality and processes. Want to work within manufacturing, distribution and logistics? Then engineering technology may be your field.

Engineering Technologists are the doers of the engineering world. They like to roll up their sleeves and get in the thick of it.

They work with engineers and scientists to produce new technology. There is really no limit to what you can do at Herff!
