The School of Social Work Continuing Education (CE) Program at The University of Alabama provides a rigorous array of timely and relevant interdisciplinary continuing education courses in social work that bear the UA stamp of excellence.

We are dedicated to meeting the continuing education needs of social work professionals in Alabama and beyond.

Our program provides flexible and innovative educational opportunities, state-of-the-art technical assistance and applied research that touches lives and creates opportunities in ways that make a difference and improve our world.

Advisory Council For the Continuing Education Program The Continuing Education Advisory Council is made up of the best and brightest professionals from local and state agencies and organizations. Many members are also School of Social Work alumni.

Advisory Council members are appointed and serve as advisors to the School of Social Work Continuing Education Program. The charge of the Council is to make suggestions on curriculum and ensure the continued success of the program. The council, which held its first meeting in September 2017 at the University Club, will also focus on helping us reach our destination as the state’s leading program for social work continuing education.

We thank each member for their contributions to the program and commitment to ensuring the program’s success.

Speaker Joanne Terrell, MSW, LICSW, PIP, earned her bachelors of psychology degree from the State University of New York and her MSW from The University of Alabama. She has been a faculty member in the School of Social Work at The University of Alabama for 20 years and retired from full-time teaching in June 2015. Her areas of specialization include psychiatric and forensic social work in inpatient and outpatient settings as well as community organization and advocacy.

Ethics The ethics portion of this workshop will identify and analyze frequent professional and popular beliefs about human nature and the personal and societal factors that influence a client’s direction in life. Based on that analysis we will discuss the characteristics of an ethical and effective social worker and the ethical dilemmas they often face. We will then explore ethical behavior in a therapeutic relationship and apply those concepts to case scenarios with course participants’ direct involvement.

Supervision The supervision portion of this workshop will identify and analyze the professional concepts and functions critical to effective clinical supervision for social workers. Various aspects of supervision perspectives will be explored. This workshop will address supervision, diversity and cultural dynamics that supervisees and supervisors face. This workshop will present a six stage model of supervising social workers in the development of assessments and other evaluation tools.

Objectives Participants will: • Clarify and integrate their beliefs related to the profession of social work to ethical social work practice.

• Identify the professional and personal characteristics of an ethical social worker.

• Learn the ethical imperatives expected of them in a therapeutic relationship.

• Gain experience applying those imperatives to case scenarios.

Objectives Participants will: • Learn the basic concepts and functions of a clinical supervisor.

• Identify the factors that facilitate effective clinical supervision.

• Analyze and become familiar with a six stage model of supervision related to the assessment process in social work.

• Gain experience applying these concepts to case scenarios.

Speaker Cynthia Franklin, PhD, LCSW, LMFT, is associate dean for doctoral education and the Stiernberg/Spencer Family Professor in Mental Health at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. Dr. Franklin is an internationally known scholar in school mental health practice. Her practice and research focuses on at-risk youths in schools and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.

Cynthia Franklin, PhD, LCSW, LMFT The University of Texas at Austin

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a strengths-oriented and resource-focused approach to counseling backed by research that shows it is a useful approach for reducing behavioral and emotional problems and increasing academic achievement in school settings. This workshop describes SFBT and illustrates ways that social workers can use this approach with youth and families. Specific solution-focused techniques are demonstrated through video, experiential exercises, and case materials. How to use SFBT in Tier 1 and team approaches are also discussed.

Objectives Participants will: • Be familiar with different ways to apply SFBT when working with youth and families.

• Understand the change process of SFBT and how it can be useful to counselors, social workers and teachers.

• Increase knowledge about specific change techniques of SFBT. • Be able to identify ways that SFBT can be used within Tier 1 interventions and within transdisciplinary teams.

Recognizing the Effects of and Approaches to Childhood Trauma Summit

April 13, 2018

Keynote Speaker Funda Yilmaz, LPC, is the founder and CEO of Atlanta-based Neurofit Global and a professional artist who has used painting, sculpture and dance in working with traumatized children and adults of all ages and life experiences since 2006. After working as a specialist consulting with Fortune 200 organizations, the U.S. Air Force, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and training various child serving organizations around the nation, Yilmaz recognized that millions of people around the world are suffering needlessly because the public isn’t aware of some of the ground-breaking techniques that help discharge high levels of stress from the body and the mind. She is also the author of “My Big Book of Answers,” a fully illustrated self-help workbook for children between the ages of 3 and 9 who are survivors of violence.

Tuscaloosa REACTS is a one-day conference that aims to educate community stakeholders about the causes and effects of childhood trauma. This annual summit is an opportunity for area leaders, service providers and community members to increase awareness, promote learning, identify resources and network.

Our focus this year will be on innovative interventions for children and youth with traumatic experiences. Yilmaz will discuss the application of the fine arts as a delivery modality for traumatic stress relief interventions in primary care and behavioral health services, in school communities, through the juvenile justice system, and in the child welfare services.

Objectives Participants will: • Be able to recognize the causes and effects of childhood trauma. • Gain an increased awareness of childhood trauma in the community. • Learn how to identify resources to help children who have experienced trauma.

About the Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Justice Workgroup The Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Justice Workgroup is comprised of community leaders, service providers and University of Alabama faculty and researchers who work together to improve community safety by better addressing the needs of at-risk children. Our goals are to identify gaps in knowledge and services and develop strategies to close those gaps in order to provide research-supported interventions for youth who are involved or who may become involved with the juvenile justice system.

Speaker Deborah Cantor, PhD, LICSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked with adolescents, adults and couples since receiving her MSW at Smith College School for Social Work in 1972.

She earned her doctorate at Simmons College School of Social Work in 2001.

Dr. Cantor taught clinical social work practice as an adjunct faculty member at both Simmons College and Boston University Schools of Social Work. She supervised MSW students and staff during her years of agency practice and served as assistant executive director of Jewish Family Service of Metrowest from 1992-1997. Dr. Cantor is currently in private practice in Framingham, MA. She has taught for SWES since 2002.

This Social Work Examination Services (SWES) Licensing Exam Preparation course is for BSW exam candidates, recent MSW graduates and experienced practitioners preparing to take the Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) licensing examination. Participants will gain an understanding of content in the national licensing exam, learn how to “decode” multiple choice questions on the licensing exam and review major direct service issues that appear in a majority of questions on the exam. Participants also will review major social work content including human behavior, psychopathology and work with special populations, the elderly, children and families.

Objectives Participants will: • Be introduced to study strategies.

• Gain an understanding of the content of the national licensing exam.

• Learn how to “decode” multiple-choice questions of the type that appear on the licensing exam.

• Undergo a review of the major direct service issues that represent the majority of questions on the examination.

About Social Work Examination Services Since 1984, Social Work Examination Services (SWES) has helped social workers prepare for social work licensure exams. Thousands of license candidates have used SWES methods and materials to successfully pass the national license exam developed by the ASWB. As the trusted partner in university settings around the country, SWES materials have been incorporated into social work school curriculums, and into continuing education programs as the cornerstone material to help prepare social workers for the ASWB licensure exam.

Speaker Kenneth R. Yeager, PhD, MSW, LISW-S, LICDC, is a clinical associate professor in the College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and the David E. Schuller Professor for Patient Compassion at The Ohio State University. He also serves as the director of the Stress Trauma and Resilience (STAR) Program. Dr. Yeager has numerous publications, including the Oxford University Press book entitled Evidence-Based Practice Manual: Research and Outcome Measures in Health and Human Services. He is a member of the Oxford Bibliographies Online editorial board and a treating clinician for the National Football League Program for Substances of Abuse.

This workshop describes how to apply professional wisdom to process and address difficult situations unique to the work environments of the participants. The speaker will discuss how to understand and address the impact of psychological trauma in a variety of formats, including emotional dysregulation, hypervigilance, avoidance, control and trust. The workshop will increase participants’ understanding of how to maintain self-awareness and connection during challenging encounters. It will also provide assurance and help to reframe negative self-assumptions following emotionally challenging work experiences. By the end of the workshop, participants will be prepared to improve communication and support between all members of the team and actuate an empowered model of compassionate self and peer care.

Objectives Participants will: • Gain an increased understanding of the impact of trauma on childhood development.

• Gain an increased awareness of the prevalence of trauma.

• Gain an increased awareness of the presence and impact of vicarious trauma.

• Understand the impact of work related vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout.
