The School of Social Work Continuing Education (CE) Program at The University of Alabama provides a rigorous array of timely and relevant interdisciplinary continuing education courses in social work that bear the UA stamp of excellence. We are dedicated to meeting the continuing education needs of social work professionals in Alabama and beyond.

The Continuing Education Advisory Council is made up of the best and brightest professionals from local and state agencies and organizations. Many members are also School of Social Work alumni.

Advisory Council members are appointed and serve as advisors to the School of Social Work Continuing Education Program. The charge of the Council is to make suggestions on curriculum and to ensure the continued success of the program. The council, which held its first meeting in September 2017, continues to focus on helping us reach our goal as the state’s leading program for social work continuing education.

David Springer, PhD, LCSW Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs The University of Texas at Austin Dr. Springer is the director of the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service (the ‘RGK’ refers to Mrs. Ronya and Dr. George Kozmetsky, founders of the RGK Foundation), a University Distinguished Teaching Professor, and a fellow to the Sid Richardson Chair of Public Affairs in the Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

He began his professional career as a clinical social worker in community and school-based settings with adolescents and their families. Workshop Description Today’s nonprofits are being called upon to make sustainable impact on complex social issues that span systems, sectors, and nations. Through innovation and engagement with diverse communities, Dr. Springer prepares nonprofit and philanthropic leaders to answer that call. This workshop will focus on leadership styles, strategies and approaches to effective organizational structures, and how to successfully integrate these skills in human service systems, nonprofits, and communities.

Social Work Examination Services Since 1984, Social Work Examination Services (SWES) has helped social workers prepare for social work licensure exams. As the trusted partner in university settings around the country, SWES materials have been incorporated into social work school curriculums, and into continuing education programs as the cornerstone material to help prepare social workers for the Association of Social Work Boards licensure exam. Students participating in a SWES workshop have a 92% pass rate, with an average score of 84.

Deborah Cantor, PhD, LICSW Faculty, SWES Dr. Cantor is a clinical social worker who has taught for SWES since 2002. She has worked with adolescents, adults and couples since receiving her Master of Social Work at Smith College School for Social Work in 1972. Workshop Description This SWES licensing exam preparation course is for BSW exam candidates, recent MSW graduates, and experienced practitioners preparing to take the licensing examination for the Association of Social Work Boards. Participants will gain an understanding of content in the national licensing exam, learn how to “decode” multiple choice questions on the licensing exam and review major direct service issues that appear in a majority of questions on the exam. Participants also will review major social work content, such as human behavior and psychopathology; work with special populations; the elderly; children and families; addictions; Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5); and clinical practice with individuals and groups, including ethics and laws affecting social workers.

Objectives Participants will be able to: • Gain an understanding of the content of the national licensing exam • Learn how to “decode” multiple-choice questions of the type that appear on the licensing exam • Undergo a review of the major direct service issues that represent the majority of questions on the examination *Each registrant will receive the three-volume SWES Comprehensive Study Guide. The guide contains a complete content review and over 1,600 sample multiple-choice questions, including five 170-question practice exams and a bibliography.

Keynote Speaker: Arvind Singhal, PhD The University of Texas at El Paso, Social Justice Initiative Dr. Singhal is the Samuel Shirley and Edna Holt Marston Endowed Professor of Communication and director of the Social Justice Initiative at The University of Texas at El Paso. His workshop will focus on Positive Deviance, a non-normative approach to health and risk messaging. About the Conference The annual Fall Social Work Conference affords an opportunity to bring national speakers, along with the latest research, to child welfare practitioners in Alabama. Through the Title IV-E partnership between the Alabama Department of Human Resources, the Alabama Higher Education Consortium on Child Welfare, and The University of Alabama School of Social Work, we are able to host the conference with a focus on a different aspect of public child welfare every year.

History of the Alabama-Mississippi Social Work Education Conference There is a rich history of unique collaboration between Alabama and Mississippi in regards to this conference, which has rotated between the two states for 46 years. From 1969 to 1971, social work faculty from the southern states met four times annually as part of a faculty development project of the Southern Regional Education Board. When the project ended, faculty from Alabama and Mississippi social work schools decided to form a conference so they could further the bonds they had developed.

Learning Objectives Participants will be able to: • Promote the transfer of information among schools providing social welfare education courses in the states of Alabama and Mississippi • Provide a forum for issues and problems of regional importance for the two states • Enable individual schools and faculty members to be sensitive and responsive to the changing demands of social work education 10

Keynote Speakers Jennifer A. Stollman, PhD J.A. Stollman Consulting Dr. Stollman earned her combined doctorate in history and cultural anthropology at Michigan State and the University of Michigan. Her fields include the Transatlantic Slave Trade and African-American History, Native-American history, Critical Race and Feminist Theory, and more. Utilizing her academic and activist experience, Dr. Stollman has developed unique motivational and non-threatening techniques designed to reduce the stress, fracturing, and silence caused by discriminatory thoughts, behaviors, policies, and systems and encourage the valuing of diverse individuals and perspectives.

Honorable Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb Retired, Alabama Supreme Court Sue Bell Cobb is a former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, the first woman to hold that office in Alabama’s history.

She was a critical champion and contributor to the passage of the state’s Juvenile Justice Reform Act of 2008. Following passage of the bill, juvenile crime decreased and number of imprisoned children was reduced by more than 60%. Cobb received her undergraduate degree in history from The University of Alabama, and she is a 1981 graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law. Ronnie Jackson, EdD, MBA Jackson Enterprise Solutions Dr. Jackson has extensive experience working with adults and youth in educational settings, including formerly founding a K-12 academy for boys. Dr. Jackson has been an advocate for first-year and first-generation foster care college students for the last ten years. He has used his twenty plus years of knowledge of college enrollment practices to help increase the number of foster care students admitted to colleges and universities across the State of Alabama. Curington, MSW, LCSW The University of Alabama Ms. Curington is the director of the Field Education Program at The University of Alabama School of Social Work. She has a wide range of practice experience, including school social work, hospice social work, mental health counseling, and private adoption work.

Most recently, Ms. Curington is co-author of the book titled, Social Media Toolkit for Field Educators.

Laurel Iverson Hitchcock, PhD, MPH, LICSW, PIP The University of Alabama at Birmingham Dr. Hitchcock is an associate professor of social work in the Department of Social Work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Her research interests include the use of technology in social work education and practice. Ethics The ethics portion of this workshop will review the growing use of technology in social work practice. Attention will be given to the 2018 updates to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics and the 2017 NASW Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice. Guided by these frameworks, discussions will focus on the knowledge, skills, and values needed by practitioners to ethically and effectively use technology in social work practice. Ethical dilemmas via case scenarios will also be explored with course participants’ direct involvement.

Supervision The supervision portion of this workshop will identify and analyze the professional concepts and functions critical to effective supervision for social workers using technology. Various aspects of how to conduct supervision with technology will be explored. This workshop will present a strengths-based approach to educating supervisees about technology and its effects on clients and communities.

Joanne Terrell, MSW, LICSW, PIP Private Practice Ms. Terrell earned her bachelors of psychology degree from the State University of New York and her MSW from The University of Alabama. She has been a faculty member in the School of Social Work at The University of Alabama for 20 years and retired from full-time teaching in June 2015. Her areas of specialization include psychiatric and forensic social work in inpatient and outpatient settings and community organization and advocacy. Description of Workshops Ms. Terrell developed a series of three workshops designed for social workers, mental health practitioners, and criminal justice professionals. Each workshop will have a diverse panel of members to share their first-hand knowledge and experiences with the criminal justice system. These workshops may be attended individually or combined for a reduced registration fee.

February 15, 2019 The first workshop will discuss an overview of forensic practice and the criminal justice system. Communication correction programs and specialty courts will also be described.

Participants will be able to: • Gain insight on the perspectives of the criminal justice system • Understand the integration of trauma in forensic practice • Identify community correction programs and specialty courts April 26, 2019 The second workshop will provide a detailed discussion of death penalty mitigation, including the analysis of general mitigation initiatives and the development of a capital mitigation defense.

June 21, 2019 The third workshop will describe therapeutic divorce mediation, including issues such as parental alienation, emotional abuse, and more.
