TJust like when the barren desert landscape comes into blossom after the coming of the long-awaited rain, our University was once again teeming with life as soon as the pandemic lockdowns were lifted. Although the graduation ceremony was put off until midsummer, teachers and students were roaming the park and the lecture halls together, remembering their work there. The summer holiday saw two fresher camps being held. The first one was for the students who had already completed two semesters but their camp was cancelled last year, while the newly-enrolled students' camp was held in the right time we hope it will stay that way forever, or at least for the foreseeable future. The full opening was still preceded by the “Current Issues of Animal Protection 2021” conference, while the Night of Museums opened the University's gates to the general public, too. Instead of the original date in March, twelve of the best participants from the Agricultural Science Section of the Conference of the Hungarian Student Research Societies (OTDK) were finally able to meet online on the last day of August. The movement's novelty, the OTDK Plus Conference offered a bit of a compensation for the lost experience. The ship of veterinary students helping the upcoming generations reached its harbour, too. Postponed from the spring to the summer, the final of the National Veterinary Medicine Competition saw some former high school and current university students wearing the white lab coat. As for many others who hadn't been admitted to the university, the days spent here strengthened their resolve to apply next year again. All in all, with the courage of their convictions and in their own way, everybody is basically trying to do what Rector Dr Péter Sótonyi said in Mezõkövesd the other day: “If you truly want to achieve something, you can. And if you can, you actually have to. Once you've set your mind on something, carry it through. The greatest tragedy is when enthusiasm flares up like a flash in the pan but then burns out.” “Your words must have weight, tomorrow must have a reason,” the lines of the long-forgotten hit song echo in my ear. uch ideas are hard to come up with during a busy academic year, so I collected some of the Rector's wise thoughts we can sometimes contemplate aboutS before the semester ends. “In this profession you can make no mistakes, because they would have dire consequences. So you just mustn't make mistakes.” “There's a lot of truth in what the older students say, but don't believe everything! You should make up your own mind as to which lecture is worth attending and which isn't, because people may have different opinions about that!” “Manual skills must be kept internalized not just in your mind, but in your hands, too.” “This University has departments with a small number of people. Take care of your teachers and each other, nothing can be more important than human health!” Finally, here's an advice you should heed both inside and outside the campus walls: “Walk the streets with your head held high, marvel at the richly ornamented buildings of Budapest! Use the opportunities offered by th cultural institutions of our capital!” Gusztáv Balázs
