From the Director Dearest USN community,

T

hanks for making time to read through this first-ever digital version of our annual Report on Philanthropy. It seems only fitting to reinvent this familiar document and its format, given the climate of change we’ve experienced since March. The 2019-2020 academic year feels so far back in the mist — we were on record pace in so many ways, and then everything shifted.

What you’ll read in the carefully crafted pages to follow is a tale of two stunningly different times for our school. Participation and dollar metrics looked so promising as we adjourned for Spring Break, before the creation of a distance learning model and checking on the basic needs of our constituents claimed our undivided attention. Facing the pandemic and then an overdue national reckoning on systemic racial inequity, we felt the weight and responsibility of this historic time.

And when the fiscal curtain fell on June 30, we stepped back to appreciate the fact that we’d reached our Annual Fund goal, saw our modest but growing endowment reach a level where it provides $1 million for our operating budget, made it possible for a record-high 98% of

families to return for the new year, furloughed no faculty or staff, and rededicated ourselves being the most cautious yet welcoming campus we can be.

Over the course of many weeks this autumn, and in the face of increasingly worrisome COVID-19 numbers in our home city, we’ve resumed here in person K-12. We’re sanitizing and testing and mitigating and live streaming and contact tracing in ways no one could have imagined, but everyone has come to see as familiar. What hasn’t changed is our gratitude for the breadth and depth of support of USN, in times of celebration and times of challenge.

I wouldn’t trade this beautiful community— parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, Board members, graduates, families of graduates, and students — for any other, anywhere.

My

first year as Board President began with the straightforward tasks of securing USN’s financial future and plotting strategic goals to advance the school’s mission. Since then, and for all of us across the country and globe, 2020 has been completely unpredictable, and we continue to navigate rocky waters weekly and monthly. I am grateful USN is filled with compassionate and thoughtful faculty, administrators, families, and Board members who approach each day with a dedication and responsibility to make the best decisions for this learning community.

I’m proud to lead USN’s Board of Trustees at this critical time in our school’s history. USN is in a strong financial position as a result of the Board’s historically conservative approach to financial planning and the administration’s strong fiscal management of resources. Our gratitude extends to alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends listed on the following pages for each and every philanthropic gift invested in our school.

The 2019-2020 fiscal year was our strongest in five years. Our Annual Fund was healthy and steady, and our endowment growth exceeded ambitious goals.

We are honored to partner with you on this educational journey and pledge our continued care for our people, our programs, and our vital financial resources.

George Peabody Society

N

amed in memory of the father of modern philanthropy whose education fund planted the seeds for University School of Nashville, the George Peabody Society recognizes our most loyal donors.

These families — which include trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, and friends of USN — have faithfully invested in the school every year for at least a quarter century with gifts of all sizes. Their commitment to USN inspires us all.

The George Peabody Society has nearly quadrupled in the past seven years from 19 to 84 donors.

Eleven members are new this year. The longest consecutive giving streak is 36 years, a milestone achieved by Weaver Barksdale, Samuel Dillard ’56, and Allis Dale and John Gillmor. We’re pleased to share alumni are 36% of the Society.

My

homes of faculty and staff while keeping a social distance.

dozen years of volunteering with USNA started by taking baby steps as a room parent, picked up speed as the Bonus Bucks Coordinator, and culminated in earning my black belt in volunteering as Artclectic Chair, USNA Service Vice-Chair, and USNA President.

Knowing everything that I know now, and even despite a pandemic, I would do it again.

I especially loved working in roles that connected me to parents in my children’s grades and in all the other grades, new parents, and seasoned USN veteran parents.

These interactions made me fall in love with our USN community all over again and left me in awe of the talent, kindness, wit, and enthusiasm that USN parents bring to the table. I made friends for life.

With not-so-perfect hindsight, it seems like an understatement to say that this past spring was a wild one. One minute we were celebrating the records set by Artclectic 2019, marveling at sold out Evening Classes, and dancing to Colin Hay from Men at Work in the Auditorium.

The next moment we were wondering how to pivot from an in-person Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon to a safer alternative, resulting in a team of masked volunteers delivering 230 boxes of cookies to the 16

More and more challenges steadily mounted on the horizon as the pandemic stretched into the summer. Zoom went from weird to familiar as we tried to plan for the school year ahead while adapting to our new normal. I am so thankful for the support from the school, USNA Board, and parent volunteers who — while dealing with their individual pandemic disasters and disappointments — jumped in to rethink and shape the new realities of USNA in 2020.

Anna Cramer and Joanna Hall have embraced the challenges that they were faced with as incoming USNA Co-Presidents, and I am grateful for their steady leadership.

It now seems like the pandemic will leave nothing untouched and that we will all emerge a little different than before, including USNA. We have time to rethink our projects, work smarter, and listen harder. I’m looking forward to the day we can again hug each other in the halls of USN, pack a crowd into the backfield while the Dads’ Alliance grills hotdogs, and enjoy a hot and sweaty graduation with our seniors under the big tent. We will do this together.

Horizons at Home – Summer Impact Report Pandemic Posed Challenges Students are likely to return to school in fall 2020 with 63 to 68% of the learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year and with only 37 to 50% of the learning gains in math, according to the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University.

In some grades, students may return to school close to a full year behind in math. What’s more, this lost ground will not be equally distributed. While students who are already performing above grade level might make potential gains, students performing at or below grade level are more likely to experience many months’ worth of learning loss.

With many students facing a semester’s worth of learning loss and unequal access to school year distance learning, Horizons needed to find a way to provide students with the best possible opportunities to learn in summer 2020. And Horizons teachers and staff stepped up, surveying and collaborating with families to understand their remote learning experiences, providing meals and supplies, and supporting each other as they delivered Horizons programming in new ways.

Despite being unable to gather together each day to learn, the Horizons at USN community creatively adapted to provide students with engaging educational and enrichment opportunities in a remote format.

Teachers gave a particular focus to the social and emotional well-being of Horizons families this summer as they checked in frequently to help parents and students process the unrest occurring across our city and country. We are grateful to our donor community who made this summer a success through their continued dedication to Horizons at USN.

Aspiring to our Mission Horizons continued to provide uniquely creative summer experiences to 95 students in first through seventh grades from public and charter schools across Metro Nashville. o 100% of Horizons students returned to attend Horizons at Home this summer. o 94% of students logged on each week to participate in synchronous learning with peers and teachers. o 95% of parents picked up academic boxes each week.

With at-home, hands-on projects blended with online classrooms, Horizons students built their literacy, STEM, and social-emotional skills and enjoyed special activities like art, dance, cooking, and mindfulness. Horizons at USN kept in close touch with families through weekly pickups, newsletters, and videos of the week’s online learning, and found thoughtful ways to bring our community together safely. Horizons students enjoyed their virtual summer, with some even commenting, “I was sad this was our last meeting, but I’m excited to see you next summer.”

Summer in Review During this one-of-a-kind summer of physical distancing, Horizons siblings are learning alongside each other in their virtual classrooms.

To complement their online classrooms, Horizons teachers, volunteers, members packed academic boxes for pick up each week. Students have received books, school and art supplies, STEM kits, games, rock collections, gift cards, healthy snacks, and more.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis and summer schedules, Horizons at USN set out to create a program that met students and families where they were. By offering options for live and pre-recorded classes, providing the necessary supplies for at-home learning, and working with families to secure devices and assist with technology, students participated in many ways. Thanks to INGRAM, each student was provided age and reading level appropriate books, and classes met virtually to read and discuss their summer reading books.

The Annual Fund The

Annual Fund is a community-wide fundraising effort that draws support from alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, friends, faculty, and parents and helps enhance the student-centered education at University School of Nashville. Our community stepped up in a big way over the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Despite the Tiger Give Back Challenge being postponed and then cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and conflict in our nation over racial injustices, the Annual Fund goal was still exceeded. Over $1.6 million was raised from 1,575 donors, including nearly $300,000 in June 2020. These resources were essential as Director Vince Durnan and our outstanding faculty navigated many unexpected challenges throughout the year.
