PARENTS CLUB

USJ Holiday Mart Save the Date After a gap year due to COVID, the 2021 Holiday Mart returned stronger than ever last fall, welcoming holiday shoppers at the Civic Center on November 19-21.

Holiday Mart continues to be the school’s largest fundraiser raising $140,000 in 2021. Technology updates and devices, playground renovations, and a library renovation are just some of the many ways the Parents Club uses those funds to support our school.

Preparations for 2022 are being led by Holiday Mart Chairs Kelly Barnes and Carmen Simeon.

This year’s Holiday Mart will be held November 18-20 with a special Sip & Shop Event on November 18. Tickets can be purchased in October.

The Holiday Mart Committee currently has a few spots open for merchants in food, clothing, and home decor. Anyone interested in participating can learn more and fill out an application at usjholidaymart.com.

USJ Welcomes Prospective Families On Campus On January 30, faculty and administration gave campus tours to families interested in potentially enrolling their students at the University School of Jackson. Visitors were received at both the Lower and Upper Schools where they were given tours of the athletic facilities, playgrounds, enrichment classes, academic center, and more.

“USJ continues to be one of the most prestigious college preparatory programs in the state, and we are always thrilled to welcome new students to the Bruins family,” said Laura Moore, Director of Admissions.

In addition to the annual open house held in January, the admissions office hosted “Bruin for a Day” in the fall when prospective students had the opportunity to “try out” USJ to see if it would be a good fit. Shadow days are a great way for students to get a feel for the USJ environment in and out of the classroom. During this time, they are paired with a current student in their grade and have the opportunity to experience classes, have lunch, and tour the campus.

The admissions office has seen a rise in enrollment interest and many grade levels have already been filled. Families who missed the open house or Bruin for a Day can still set up a private tour or shadow day by contacting Director of Admissions Laura Moore at 660.1692 or lmoore@usjbruins.org.

The John H. Weston, Jr. Golf & Tennis Center When students return to campus for the 2022-23 school year, the John H. Weston, Jr. Golf & Tennis Center will be ready for action. The 3,000 square foot facility will boast golf and tennis locker rooms, two Trackman Golf Simulators, a putting green, restrooms, coaches’ offices, and a spectacular view from the covered front porch overlooking the eight new tennis courts.

The Center was made possible due to a generous donation from John H. Weston, Jr. He is the Chairman and CEO of Capital City Residential Health Care and serves as the current Tennessee President of the National Association of Dually Diagnosed (TN-NADD). He grew up in Gary, Indiana, is a Ball State University graduate, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. John and his sister, Elizabeth Dixon-Tunstill, have been a part of the USJ family for four years. John’s son, Dyson, is in third grade.

Elizabeth’s children, Ariel, Aaren, and Jaxon, are in eleventh, tenth, and third grades, respectively.

When asked about his investment in USJ, John stated, “When the Imagine More Capital Campaign plans were shared with me, I took time to decide where I wanted to invest my time and energy. After much thought, it became clear that contributing to this project was something that I felt led to do. Although I cannot see the full details now, I have faith that this center will bless not only my family but future generations to come. I feel fortunate to be able to leave behind a legacy that will benefit many.”

Fund for Excellence Teleparty Sees Another Successful Year USJ students participated in a Fund For Excellence party on November 15 at Hub City Brewing. Fundraising is not an easy task, and the University School of Jackson is proud of our students for their dedication and perseverance.

At a separate fundraising drive on November 9, parents and alumni joined together at Hub City Brewing to raise $110,000 for the Fund for Excellence.

The kindness and generosity displayed by our donors helped make both events successful. Your generosity helps support essential programs and needs that are not covered by standard tuition dollars.

Imagining More in 2022 - The Path Forward For more than three years, the USJ campus has been a hub of transition or TRANSFORMATION! The Imagine More Capital Campaign was launched in February of 2019 and since that time, 14 new projects have been completed on our campus with more to come as we move through 2022 and beyond.

From playgrounds that are, without a doubt, second to none in the region, to improved campus traffic circulation, from a state of the art Lady Bruins Field house to artificial turf and enhancements to Carlock Stadium, and from the first pitch in our brand new Overton Stadium to the eight new tennis courts and a golf and tennis center, USJ families have “Imagined More” for their children and their grandchildren and through their efforts have transformed the USJ campus from a 2016 vision to a modern reality!

To date, more than $6 million has been raised for the new campus features. Parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends have heeded the call and dug deep to support the campaign.

However, more work remains as we chart the Path Forward!

In the coming months, work will begin on a much-needed turn lane at the intersection of the Upper School and Lower School Road (the main road into campus). The new lane will greatly improve Lower School carpool traffic flow for dropoff and pick-up. Additionally, the Upper School drop-off area will be defined and separated from student and faculty parking, creating a safer more efficient space for car and pedestrian traffic.

Also, in the days ahead sidewalks (pedestrian flow) will continue to be a priority. With each completed and ongoing project (playgrounds, tennis courts, etc. sidewalks have been built into the plan. This summer, the Upper and Lower Schools will be completely connected with sidewalks and as projects progress, every destination point on campus will be accessible with sidewalks. The fall Friday nights of walking in the grass or the street… are thankfully numbered.

As we look at what’s ahead for 2023 and beyond: new parking will be added where the old tennis courts were, a drop-off area at the football fieldhouse will be added, a new entrance to our sports facilities will be erected, and continued focus on safety and security for our students and all visitors to campus will be a priority.

USJ still needs your help to ensure the Path Forward. Any size gift moves the needle – it all matters! In the end, it has always been parents and grandparents who wanted more for their children who have built USJ. This was true in 1970, 1987, 1998, 2004, 2019, and today. And please know that tuition dollars are not used for any capital projects. MENTORING THE FUTURE

When University School of Jackson junior Ijeoma Oleru noticed an opportunity to help younger Bruins, she worked with school faculty to develop a peer-to-peer mentoring program. The Study Group pairs high school students with Middle School students in an effort to provide not only academic tutoring but also to help bridge the gap between middle and high school.

“When I was a sophomore during the spring, I tutored a sixth-grader, but it was just me on my own because during the pandemic we didn’t really have any clubs or groups or anything. So I just did it on my own and I really liked it,” Oleru said.

Oleru wanted to get more students involved and decided to create a school mentoring and tutoring program between Middle School and Upper School students. The program has grown to include 31 Upper School students and 17 Middle School students.

Before Upper School students can participate, they are required to complete a tutoring 101 session and a mentoring session. ​​Each Upper School student is then assigned to a Middle School student, and they work together on either Tuesday mornings or Thursday afternoons for 30 minutes. Some Middle School students alternate between two Upper School students each week due to the large number of Upper School students who are in the program.

“I think it helps make Upper School less scary because you kind of find a friend in somebody who is much older, and then you see that they’re not that much different. They’ve just matured and they’ve learned different organizational and study skills as they’ve gotten older.

So, hopefully, during this program they can start learning that from a younger age and it can help them,” Oleru said.

The Study Group works with students on all subjects, helping with their homework and developing effective study habits. It also places an emphasis on the mentoring side of the program and aims to build confidence in students.

Although Middle School students benefit academically and socially from these relationships, Upper School students are also improving social and leadership skills. The program is already seeing improved grades and study habits from Middle School students.

“We work on building relationships between the mentor and the mentee and teaching the Middle Schoolers things like organizational skills,” said

Oleru. “I worked with a student last quarter who initially struggled with organization. After working with her for a series of weeks, I watched as her organizational skills grew. Her binders became more organized, and I also taught her how to organize her locker in a way that aligned with her class schedule.”

relationships grow, and with that - confidence. We have some real naturals when it comes to working with students. One student in particular jumped right on in and started with self-assurance. She is a born teacher.

One of my favorite parts of the Study Group is watching the Middle School students light up when they see their partner. The relationship between the two is such a positive for both of them.

Middle School and Upper School can be filled with ups and downs and it is nice to know someone cares about you and that they are there to help. This goes for the Upper School students as well. I can not say enough about how responsible the Upper School students have been. They always show up or have a substitute arranged ahead of time. I am so proud of them. I have also heard from several parents how the program was such a positive for their Middle School students and how it gave them support. One parent even hoped her daughter could continue the program in Upper School.”

“I have a really good relationship with both of my mentors, and I think it’s just easy to have a good relationship because everyone’s nice and you don’t feel pressured, and it has helped improve my grades and my study habits for sure,” said eighth-grader Maggie Norris.

Due to its success, the Study Group program has been formally recognized by the Student Government Association, making it an official club at the school that will continue after Oleru graduates.

Although the group has an academic focus, the Upper School kids do try to keep some activities light and fun including bringing goody bags for the Middle School students and hosting a Christmas Party with snacks and refreshments to wish the Middle School students good luck on their exams.

Oleru was nominated and selected to receive a Jefferson Award for her work with the Study Group program. The Jefferson Awards honor community champions who are “ordinary people doing extraordinary things without expectation of recognition.” The awards are given at both national and local levels. Oleru was the youngest recipient of the award this year.

Teachers say the amount of planning, work and follow through by Oleru has been unparalleled.

“As the faculty sponsor for Study Group, it has been very rewarding watching the Upper School students mature throughout the year with their mentee,” said Shannon Whisenant. “In the beginning, everyone was cautious. I have had the pleasure of watching the 7

School Spirit Activities Delight All Ahead of Thanksgiving Break From toddlers to fifth grade, Lower School students were thrilled to participate in one of USJ’s newest traditions, the Turkey Trot.

On November 23, classes were staggered throughout the day and took turns running or walking a lap around the Lower School.

While having fun, the little turkey trotters raised more than $745 for Samaritan’s Purse! Way to go, Bruins!

Additionally, Regina Sills’ class created Thanksgiving parade floats and were able to showcase their masterpieces to other classes in a hall parade. The Santa parade float was a student favorite.

Finally, USJ’s youngest pilgrims and Native Americans enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast in class complete with the traditional favorites our country was founded on- Chick-Fil-A, string cheese, and veggie straws.

50th Day of School

One of the most cherished traditions at USJ for students, faculty, and parents are the themed days in the Lower School to mark attendance achievements with our youngest Bruins.

This year, Jr. K celebrated the 50th day of school with a ‘50s themed parade and sock hop. Kindergarten celebrated the 101st day of school with Cruella and her 101 dalmations. Second grade students wore themed attire on 2-2-22 to celebrate being in 2nd grade on “Twos Day.”

Excitement Fills the Halls as the Holidays Approach There’s nothing quite like the magic of Christmas through a child’s eyes. To add to the fun, the Lower School hosted a Christmas Spirit Week December 13-16 before the holiday break. The theme on Monday was “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” and students were encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas attire. On Tuesday, students wore pajamas for “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.”

On Wednesday, USJ’s favorite villain, The Grinch, stirred up mischief around campus, and students dressed as the Grinch or a Whoville citizen. On Thursday, students wore dress up Christmas attire, and many enjoyed special treats and parties to celebrate the last day before break.

Lower School Bruins Experience Friday Night Lights In September, almost 400 students from kindergarten to fifth grade performed for the annual halftime show at Kirkand Field in Carlock Stadium. The stadium was packed for a fantastic show made possible by music teachers Elizabeth Atkins and Leslie Scott. Thank you to the USJ teachers and students for your hard work and devotion.

The annual Little Bruin Cheer Performance was held October 22. Students participated in three days of cheer camp and showed their new skills off at the half time show.

Students Develop Leadership Skills and Explore New Interests in 4-H Club In 4‑H programs, kids and teens complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture, and civic engagement in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.

At USJ, 4-H is a year-long program with more than 60 students participating in fourth grade and 75 students participating in fifth grade. Students meet once a month at school for 45 minutes.

During this time, students work on projects designed to teach specific life skills and help the community.

“Participation in 4-H benefits students because it allows them the opportunity to be in a club that encourages members to learn and serve others,” said fourth grade teacher Michelle Boykin. “It activates members to develop their head, heart, hands, and health.

The club is a great opportunity to learn new skills, to be a leader in your club, and to respect and cooperate with others.”

Leadership roles in each class include president, vice-president, secretary, song leader, and service-learning chairman.

Each month, 4-H club members participate in a new contest that encourages different life skills. Examples of contests include stitching and sewing, making decorative crafts or ornaments, baking, cooking, decorating, arts and crafts, etc.

Finally, students assign a service project leader and pick a new community service project each month. Previous projects included collecting items for RIFA, securing donations for the Animal Care Center, making cards for patients at the Kirkland Cancer Center and retirement homes, recycling items within the community, and sponsoring children from the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse at Christmas.

4‑H is America’s largest youth development organization— empowering nearly six million young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. It is represented in all 95 counties in Tennessee. As a 4-H member in Madison County, you join more than 3,000 boys and girls in approximately 110 organized clubs.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Exchange Club Recognizes USJ Students University School of Jackson students have been recognized as “Youth of the Month” by the Jackson Exchange Club “for accomplishment and in recognition of the outstanding quality of leadership.” This recognition was earned by Stephanie Nnaji in December, Mmesoma Nwokolo in January and Blair Driver in February.

The Jackson Exchange Club’s Youth of the Month program honors outstanding students in the community who have exhibited excellence in academics and leadership. This monthly program not only enhances career opportunities for those honored, it also promotes good citizenship, a desire for greater scholastic achievement, and the development of wellrounded personalities to other young adults in the community.

Junior Rotarians Selected Congratulations to seniors John Dougan, Sadie Hanna, Lilly Mitchell, Stephanie Nnaji, Henry Piercey, and Caroline Wilkerson who represented USJ as Junior Rotarians for the 2021-2022 school year.

The Junior Rotarian program provides for one representative from each school to attend a local Rotary Club weekly meeting for a designated month.

Each Junior Rotarian is under consideration for the annual Rotary Scholarship, and typically one student from each school is selected as a scholarship recipient. We are proud of these young Rotarians and look forward to who they will become in the future.

2021-2022 Class of Leadership University University School of Jackson juniors Zainab Baba, Ijeoma Oleru, Charley Cloud, Sanchita Jinturkar, Caroline Conder, Will Ragon, Owen Stonecipher, and John Carr Ryan were selected to participate in the Jackson Chamber’s Leadership University Class of 2021-2022.

Leadership University is a youth leadership development program for Jackson-Madison County and is made up of a diverse group of high school juniors that demonstrate leadership potential. The program started in 1999 as a team class project of Leadership Jackson, LU prepares participants to become responsible, ethical leaders that make a positive difference in others as well as their community by creating awareness in all aspects of the community. The five-month program is designed to identify a diverse group of high school students who demonstrate leadership potential, to develop in an interactive environment, the framework for constructive leadership, committed involvement, and responsible participation in the future of this community. It has developed into the premier youth leadership program in Jackson.

During the program, class members completed 32 classroom hours and six hours of community service. LU students discussed ethical leadership with local leaders, participated in mock job interviews, tackled alcohol and drug issues, and participated in other activities. The program helps the class members see their community from different viewpoints and focus on where they can make a positive difference.

10th Annual RIFA Food Drive In September, students at the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools joined forces with other local private schools to collect 56,130 lbs for RIFA! The RIFA food drive was completely student led this year by the SGA, who organized collection, and determined incentives for class participation.

USJ Students Perform in The Nutcracker with Ballet Arts University School of Jackson students, Mimi Campbell (eleventh grade), Olivia Botter (eighth grade), Caroline Alea (eighth grade), Matilda Campbell (seventh grade), and Emi Hammond (seventh grade) danced in the 40th anniversary of Ballet Arts of Jackson’s Nutcracker performance December 10-12, 2021 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. During this enchanting Christmas Eve adventure, audience members were transported to a magical land with Clara, Mouse King, and the Sugarplum Fairy.

The RIFA Food Bank collects and distributes food to other nonprofits in Madison County and the neighboring counties that serve individuals through their programs, shelters, food pantries, etc. Through food industry donations and community food drives, food contributions come to RIFA to help meet area needs.

The Food Bank warehouses the food and with help from volunteers, sorts, packs, and re-distributes it to partnering agencies. Each year RIFA assists more than 20 nonprofits in seven counties, distributing 100,000 pounds of food or more.

Since 1973, Ballet Arts has enriched the lives of thousands of dancers and patrons and is a staple in the arts community in West Tennessee. The company produces two annual performances including the longest-running Nutcracker in West Tennessee and a spring performance. The program gives students the opportunity to train and perform in front of a 2,200 seat audience while also dancing alongside professional dancers from companies like American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Paris Opera Ballet.

Students Spread Joy to the Community at Christmas Each year at Christmas, different clubs, teams, and grades at USJ choose unique service projects to give back to the community.

Last year, Jr. K classes stocked the pantry and closet for the Dream Center with coats, clothes, diapers, food, and cleaning supplies.

Second grade students collected items for care packages for patients at the Kirkland Cancer Center. Items included warm socks, chapstick, lotion, and books.

Upper School students adopted families from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Their mission was to purchase items needed from a list provided by “angels” who participated in the program.

Thank you to all of our families who helped fulfill a variety of needs in the community this Christmas season. You truly are an excellent example of what it means to be a Bruin.

ACADEMIC NEWS

Text Books Come to Life as Middle School Students Explore Atlanta Since 2015, seventh grade students have participated in an annual field trip to Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout the school year, literature assignments provide a historical base for the stops on the field trip focusing on the topics of civil rights and human rights and the Civil War. After learning about history, a little fun is mixed into the agenda, too.

In October, 64 students and 24 adults were able to travel on the Atlanta Study Tour. Stops included the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Aquarium, MLK National Park, World of Coca-Cola, Chick-Fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, Centennial Olympic Park, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Stone Mountain. The students were excited to spot a former Bruin in the photo gallery at the Chick-Fil-A College Football Hall of Fame.

“This is a wonderful experience for the students as well as the adults,” said sixth grade mathematics teacher Shay Young. “This trip brings to life areas of instruction in the classroom. Students also learn the etiquette of traveling in large groups, staying in hotel rooms with classmates, etc. For some of our students, this is their first trip away from home without the supervision of their parents.”

USJ is committed to preparing students for college and life after it. Activities like the Atlanta Study Tour encourage our students to think beyond the curriculum and apply their knowledge to real-life situations.

Middle School Students Develop Bio-Board Presentations Students in Kathy Davis’ seventh grade english class completed biography boards in the fall to complement their curriculum.

Students were assigned to read a biography of their choice. They were instructed to look for answers to a list of basic questions given to them. After reading the book independently, they wrote a short report answering the list of questions. Students also created the body/dress of the person whose biography they read using creative materials for clothing and hair. These projects were similar to large paper dolls. They cut out a circle for the head and arms and presented their biography report to the class. The students had a blast with this presentation.

Nine Students Sworn in to Honor Council In September, the USJ student body swore in nine new members of the Honor Council.

9th: Winn Crook, Max Kilburn 10th: Chester Evans, Kendall Morris 11th: Berkely Pettigrew, Abe Stonecipher 12th: Jon Alex Campbell, James Mitchell Speaker: John Dougan The goal of the Honor Council is simple: to hold students accountable for lying, cheating, or stealing while encouraging character development and an honest learning environment throughout the USJ campus.

Any student who is found guilty of dishonest acts will go before the Council, which consists of a jury of his or her peers. After hearing the details of the case, which are kept highly confidential among members, the Council suggests a recommended course of action to the administration. They seldom see repeat offenders.

The formation of the Honor Council and Honor Code started in the 2008-09 school year as Honor Council members visited other schools with honor councils, performed online research, and participated in an all-day workshop where they wrote and designed the code, oaths, hearing procedures, constitution, and by-laws.

The Honor Council is made up of nine Upper School students who are elected, without campaign, by the student body each year. These officers consist of a speaker—who is always a senior—and two representatives from each grade. All must maintain a 3.5 grade point average.

During an assembly at the beginning of each school year, Upper School students recite the Honor Code oath, thereby accepting their responsibility for the Honor Code on campus and at all school functions. Students are charged with supporting the community of trust and integrity embodied in this code and are expected not to condone the violation of this code by others.

University School of Jackson Senior Selected as Coca Cola Scholar Semi-Finalist Stephanie Nnaji is one of only 18 students from Tennessee, out of more than 68,000 applicants nationwide, to move forward as a Coca-Cola Scholar semifinalist.

Coca-Cola representative Amanda Bartholomew presented Stephanie with a certificate of recognition in January.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation invests in the future by offering college scholarships to exceptional high school students dedicated to leadership, service, and action that positively affects others.

To celebrate Coca-Cola’s centennial in 1986, The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola bottlers came together to fund the Coca−Cola Scholars Foundation. This commitment to education enables the Foundation to support over 1,400 college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.4 million through two nationally recognized programs on behalf of the Coca-Cola System.

The mission of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is to provide scholarship programs and lifelong enrichment opportunities in support of exceptional peoples’ thirst for knowledge and their desire to make a difference in the world.

Lower School Recognizes Students Who Display Exemplary Character through Student of the Month Awards In the fall, Lower School guidance counselor Sarah Jones started a Student of the Month education program to reward students who display positive character traits at school. Each month has a different theme, and students from each class are selected based on teacher nominations. “Student of the Month” honorees are awarded with an ice cream party each month and recognized with a certificate.

“This has been a fun way to teach character education to our Lower School students,” said Jones. “Instead of simply being words that are spoken, they are shown exactly what each trait looks like in real scenarios making the lesson more meaningful. Because of the enthusiasm shown by the students, we plan to continue this program in years to come.”

Blair Driver Honored by National Merit Corporation and College Board Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for college scholarships and is open to all U.S. high school juniors.

Winners are chosen based on their skills, academic performance, and PSAT score.

The goal of the program is to reward high-achieving students and encourage them to pursue rigorous studies in college.

There were approximately 1.5 million entrants in the National Merit Scholarship Competition, and the 50,000 students with the highest PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Selection Index scores qualified for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

PSAT selects about two-thirds of those highest scorers as Commended Students, in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Included in this group is USJ student Blair Driver.

Driver plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall to major in finance while also minoring in Spanish. She was captain of the 2021 girls state championship tennis team and has been playing tennis for more than 15 years. She is vice president of the senior class, president of the Science National Honor Society, and secretary of Mu Alpha Theta. She is also a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and was a member of the 2020-2021 Leadership University class. Additionally, she received the Bill Moss Book award in 2021.

University School of Jackson Students Inducted into Prestigious Academic Honor Societies Academic excellence is one of the cornerstones that the University School of Jackson was built upon in 1970. As West Tennessee’s premier college preparatory school, USJ strives to help each student maximize their potential, beginning with development curriculum pre-kindergarten and continuing with Advanced Placement courses in the Upper School. USJ is proud of the high percentage of students selected to participate in various honor societies including the Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Tri-M Honor Society, and the National Art Honor Society. Each honor society has different requirements but most have strict requirements regarding GPA, AP or honors courses, and volunteer hours.

In December, USJ inducted 13 new members into the Science National Honor Society. Congratulations to George Allen, Zainab Baba, Cassidy Bruno, Mark Cox, Autumn Hanna, Tannah Hill, Sanchita Jinturkar, Paul Jones, Drew Morris, Ijeoma Oleru, Brayden Roberts, Solomon Scott, and Reed Sullivan.

In November, USJ inducted 21 new members into the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. The goal of Mu Alpha Theta is to inspire interest in mathematics, develop strong scholarship in the subject, and promote the enjoyment of mathematics in high school students.

In January, new members were inducted into the International Thespian Society, Tri-M Honor Society, and the National Art Honor Society. The induction ceremony was held in the Blankenship Theater, and more than fifty students became a part of these nationallyrecognized organizations.

The Lady Bruins are Tennis State Champions At halftime during the November 12 football game, the Lady Bruins tennis team received their State Championship rings. Way to go Lady Bruins!

Golf Regional Champions In September, the boys golf team finished second in the region and advanced to compete in the state championship. At the regional championship, John Gregory Wilson finished fourth (71) overall and John Alex Campbell finished fifth (73). In October, at the state championship, John Gregory Wilson finished in seventh place.

The girls golf team took first place in the regional championships. At the state championship, sophomore Claire Henson placed second in the Division II, Class A girls individual title, after a seven-hole playoff.

English All Time Goal Scorer in School History In the fall, USJ’s Morgan English not only surpassed a total of 150 goals for her high school career, but now holds the all-time school record for the Lady Bruins for career goals scored. She has reached the milestone in just her junior season.

English etched her name in the history books alongside some of the best to ever put on a USJ uniform, passing the previous goal scoring record set at 149 by Honeye Heydari. English came on to the local high school girls soccer scene a few years ago as an eighth grader, quickly establishing herself as an elite player, eventually leading to two All-State selections, and last year’s District MVP award.

“It means a lot for sure, the players that have come through and kind of hit those marks over the years are phenomenal players and they’re some of the ones I look up to the most,” said English. “I absolutely love the game, and you just got to do what you love. When I come out here, I absolutely love it, and it drives me to keep getting better.”

Lady Bruins Bring Home Soccer State Championship On October 29, the Lady Bruins soccer team beat Battle Ground Academy 1-0 at CHI Memorial Stadium in Chattanooga. This win secured the DII-A girls soccer championship for the Lady Bruins and ended the two-year reign from the Lady Wildcats.

The last time the Lady Bruins held the state championship title was in 2011.

“It is a wonderful achievement, and I think the players deserve all the credit,” said USJ coach Paul Conway.

The game was in a deadlock until Morgan English put the Lady Bruins up a goal at the half. USJ keeper Lilly Kate Varino made several saves to preserve her clean sheet. She finished with nine saves and her 11th shutout of the season.

“She was key. You do not win state titles without big performances from big players. There was a moment in the second half where she was in a one-on-one situation, and we just believed she was going to make the save and she did. ... really pleased for her — she absolutely had a great performance,” Conway said.

The championship soccer team was recognized at the football game on November 12.

Sports Plus West Tennessee All-Star Game Top senior football players from West Tennessee competed in a classic North vs. South match-up. The 10th annual All-Star game was held December 10, at USJ. Steele Haynes and Gabe Williams were chosen to play in the game.

East-West All-Star Classic

Steele Haynes was selected as the 2021 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football DII-A award winner. Haynes was also named the D-II A West Region Player of the Year.

Haynes finished the season with 1,615 yards rushing with 10.6 yards per carry and 201.8 yards per game. He had 152 carries and 29 touchdowns.

Nearly 90 of Tennessee’s best senior football players and more than a dozen coaches were named to participate in this year’s East-West All-Star Classic. The event, sponsored by the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association (T.A.C.A.), was Friday, December 10 at Fortera Stadium on the campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville. Ben Pledger and Joshua Jones from USJ were selected to participate. Pledger was named Offensive MVP. Ben completed a 48-yard field goal in the first half of the game, breaking the EastWest All-Star record for longest field goal.

USJ Students Chosen for All State Teams Selected by Tennessee Sports Writers Association In January, the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) recognized exceptional athletes across the state in various sports.

USJ Juniors Lilly Kate Varino, Stella Spencer, Betha Pucek, and Morgan English were selected to the TSWA All-State Soccer Team.

USJ Sophomore Claire Henson was named to the TSWA All-State Golf Team.

USJ Senior Steele Haynes (Offense RB), Senior Josh Jones (Defense DL), and Senior Ben Pledger (Defense P) were selected to the TWSA All-State Football Team.

Blue Suede Championship In January, the Middle School Girls Basketball team earned first place at the Blue Suede Championship.

The Middle School Boys Basketball team placed third. Congratulations, Bruins!

Jane Ramer Selected as First Recipient of Distinguished “PE Coin” PE Coins are bestowed upon USJ faculty for exceptional commitment to student learning and understanding. They are given in recognition of a faculty member’s service to his or her students through innovation and commitment to lifelong learning.

The inaugural PE coin was presented to Jane Ramer of the USJ Upper School Science Department in the fall. Ramer challenges her AP Biology students to think creatively and teaches them skills to succeed.

Her innovative, creative, and inventive classroom pedagogy showcases the forward-thinking skills students need to move through the 21st century.

That devotion and adherence to knowledge lives on in our esteemed educators here at the University School of Jackson. In recognition of this pedagogical heritage, we designed this PE coin to commemorate the long and proud tradition of our faculty’s knowledge and dedication to learning. Encircling the front of the coin, you’ll find the Greek words “Paideia and Episteme.” Paideia refers to the concepts of education and learning while episteme refers to the concepts of understanding and knowledge. In addition, the traditional elements of the oak tree and laurel appear, symbolizing wisdom, potential, strength, and endurance.

Russ Ellis Raises Money for Star Center at Dancing with the Stars On October 21, Director of Development Russ Ellis put on his dancing shoes to raise money for the STAR Center in Jackson with his partner Carolyn Cunningham. The couple danced to a 70s medley featuring “Shake Your Groove Thing” and “You Should Be Dancing.”

The University School of Jackson sponsored Russ and Carolyn’s team. This was the sixth event for the popular fundraiser.

Ellis raised more than $6,000 while competing with eight other couples in a dance competition. Overall, dancers and donors raised more than $306,000 at this event.

Proceeds help The STAR Center fulfill its mission of helping any person, with any disability, realize their potential.

Whether the STAR Center is serving children who are non-verbal helping them find their voice or helping individuals with a disability find employment, the mission of The STAR Center is what drives the teams to fundraise and prepare for the competition. Donations make it possible for people who come to The STAR Center to turn their challenges into opportunities and rise above their circumstances.

Cates Inducted Into Athletic Association Hall of Fame Congratulations to Upper School math instructor Bubba Cates for being inducted into the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame in January. Cates previously coached the Green Jays baseball team at Jackson State Community College for nine seasons from 1990-1998.

The TCCAA Hall of Fame was created in 1986 with the induction of six coaches and administrators. The Tennessee Junior College - Cumberland, Freed-Hardeman, Hiwassee, and Martin Methodist, would combine with the newly-created Tennessee Community College - Chattanooga City, Cleveland State, Columbia State, and Jackson State, along with Morristown College to create the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association (TJCAA) in 1968. From 1968-74 the TJCAA grew in membership which included both private and public two-year institutions. At this time, with the increase in schools, the conference would change its name to the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA). As the five private schools left the conference with only the ten community colleges representing, the conference changed its name to the current title of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) in 2008.

Each year the TCCAA Hall of Fame Committee reviews nominations and elects new members into the TCCAA Hall of Fame.

Middle School Director Margaret Livingston Graduates Leadership Jackson On December 16, USJ celebrated Middle School Director Margaret Livingston for completing the Jackson Chamber’s Leadership Jackson Program.

Leadership Jackson was developed by the Jackson Chamber in 1979 to build core leadership for West Tennessee – training young leaders to get involved and to identify service projects. Being intentional about leadership development accelerated Jackson to create informed, connected, and passionate leaders who could step into active community roles.

The nomination process is competitive and requires an interview with a panel in addition to a list of professional accomplishments and community involvement. Once selected, members meet for a full day of community programming once a week from September to December. Additionally, a time commitment is required for a COPE retreat, homework, and a community service project.

USJ hosted the Leadership Jackson class on October 27 when participants toured local independent and public schools as part of education day programming. Participants enjoyed a small luncheon by the pond and a tour of the Lower School campus.

The Leadership Jackson program rotates through local schools each year, and USJ faculty were excited to give the tour the same year Livingston participated.

Lifelong USJ Teacher Linda Yates Retires Born in St. Louis and growing up in Memphis, Linda Yates attended The University of Memphis, starting as a piano major and switching to elementary education after one semester, minoring in history. Graduating in 3.5 years, she began her teaching career in West Memphis, Arkansas, at a school named Wonder Elementary.

Faculty Milestones Faculty members celebrating professional anniversaries were recognized at the Annual Meeting on December 16 before winter break. Employees enjoyed a winter snack and drink bar featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, spiced tea, hot chocolate, and coffee at Blankenship Theater. Employees also received an annual gift from the Board of Trustees and Parents Club.

After marrying and moving to Jackson, she taught first grade at Malesus Elementary for two years, then took time off to spend time with her son through kindergarten.

When her son went to school, she returned to teaching, working at Episcopal Day School in first grade. As the years went by, and USJ grew from Episcopal Day School and Old Hickory Academy, she continued teaching, by then in second grade, where she continued teaching until retirement. Through those years she recalls two pieces of advice shared by former colleagues.

“The first was to always have a sound educational reason for everything you do in the classroom,” said Yates. “And the second was given many years ago when I suppose I was in a panic about not being able to complete part of the curriculum on time according to deadline. My friend reminded me to ‘teach the child, not the book.’ I have always kept that advice in mind: certainly not to disregard the given curriculum, but to always do what I could to enhance it to fit the needs of my students.”

“I will always look back fondly and gratefully to my years at USJ, to so many precious children that were entrusted to me each year, and to what I hope will be some everlasting friendships,” Yates continued.

Joe Grace Retires After 20 years with the University School of Jackson, Maintenance Supervisor Joe Grace is retiring. Grace started working with the school in 2002 as a maintenance helper. He quickly transitioned to maintenance supervisor and has been an invaluable asset to school.

“After 20 years I’ve decided to spend more time with my family, working in my woodshop making duck calls, camping, hunting, fishing, traveling, and riding motorcycles,” said Grace. “It’s bittersweet because I’ve loved working with USJ and the great staff. It’s been an awesome journey that I will truly miss as well as countless friends.”

Students sent an audiotape consisting of excerpts from songs to be sung at the concert to audition for the group. The collegiate-level music was challenging, and each student was also required to sing in a foreign language.

SOUTHERN INVITATIONAL CHORAL CONFERENCE Seven of our junior and senior choral students participated and performed in the Southern Invitational Choral Conference held at the University of Southern Mississippi this week. Dr. TJ Harper, associate professor of music and director of choral activities at Loyola University in Los Angeles, CA, served as the clinician. Kelsa Lunsford, senior, was selected as a soloist out the 600 students who attended the event. Students included Henry Piercey, Reed Sullivan, Solomon Scott, Kelsa Lunsford, Caroline Wilkerson, Gracyn Van Winkle, and Ashlynn Isbell.

USJ Students Selected to Participate in the First Jackson Symphony Youth Choir In December, 20 students from USJ were selected to participate in the inaugural Jackson Symphony Youth Choir. They performed with the Jackson Symphony during the Holiday Pops Concert. The selected students were Pavan Nerwal, Avery Hammond, Abby Hathcock, Lily Smith, Skylar Mae Stanfield, Caroline Short, Shaila Patel, Bryana Yarbrough, Isabella Lefevre, Anna Leigh Byrd, Jax Carrington, Charli Ellis, Mattie Allen, Addyson DePriest, Aspen Sturgis, Elle Yancy, Eliza Dorris, Stella Hartup, Brianna Smith, and Weatherly Rush.

This family-friendly concert kicks off the holiday season for many. It featured soloists, fun sing-along opportunities, and the full power of The Jackson Symphony.

USJ Choral Students Perform with The Jackson Symphony On November 6, 15 USJ choral students joined The Jackson Symphony to perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center.

Students included Ava Beller, Kamryn DePriest, Sadie Hanna, Annika Jerge, Kim Kabre, Landan Kopiar, Kelsa Lunsford, Lizzie Montoya, Mmesoma Nwokolo, Michael Saridakis, Taylor Tremblay, Andi Cate Via, and Caroline Wilkerson.

Concert goers were able to witness the fire and majesty of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 live at the event. It featured four soloists, full choir, and The Jackson Symphony orchestra. This was a unique opportunity to hear Beethoven’s first and last symphonies live. Ending with “Ode to Joy,” this concert was an anthem to humanity that celebrated the apex of the human spirit.

Christmas Choral Concert On Sunday, December 12, USJ Concert Choir held their annual Christmas Concert in the Blankenship Theater. The concert included 11 songs and featured several ensembles and soloists. The Middle School Choir and the Upper School Concert Choir performed O Holy Night, Lux Aurumque, Sing, We Now of Christmas, and the combined choirs number Carol of the Bells. Lisa Powell served as accompanist.

A featured ensemble of students selected to the Quad State Honor Choir also performed.

Selections included Vivaldi’s Gloria and Jesu and Joy of Man’s Desiring.

Students Display Artistic Excellence at Regional Art Contests The 14th annual West Tennessee Regional Student Art Competition was held January 17 - February 24. This contest was open to middle and high school students in public, private, and home school classes. The contest is funded by the Tennessee Art Education Association and the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Cassidy Bruno won third place in drawing for her self-portrait pencil drawing “A Clean Start.” Joshua McKinney, Autumn Hanna, Laney Haynes, Elle Jerge, Gracie Lin, Mattie King, Olivia Welch, and Jaci Oxford also had their artwork on display during the exhibition.

The Briarcrest Regional Art Contest & Exhibition chose the artwork of Cassidy Bruno as Honorable Mention in 11th grade, Laney Haynes as third place in 12th grade, and Madeline Craig as second place in 10th grade. The awards ceremony was held Tuesday, October 26, at the Sparks Chapel at Briarcrest in Eads, Tennessee.

Ellen Driver, Jenna Schultz, Mia Powell, Gracie Lin, and Vivian Lam also had their artwork on display during the exhibition.

MidSouth Scholastic Art Competition 2022 winners included Elle Jerge and Cassidy Bruno. Bruno received a Gold Key for her work titled “Traditions” in the drawing and illustration category. She also received a Silver Key for “Morning Ritual,” also in the drawing and illustration category. She received two honorable mentions for “Twice A Day” and “What A Day.” Elle Jerge received a Gold Key for “Scales of Anubis” in the painting category. She also received Silver Keys for her sculpture “Butterfly Box” and mixed media “Chains.” Additionally, Jerge received four honorable mentions. The Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards is an annual juried student art exhibition presented by the Brooks Museum League and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. As an affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, the Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards honors exemplary art by students in seventh through twelfth grades, recognizing their outstanding achievements in a competitive annual exhibition, and providing cash prizes and scholarship opportunities.

USJ Arts Program Give Students Opportunities to Excel on Stage Theatre USJ’s theatre program is both challenging and rewarding in its curriculum. Each year, Middle and Upper School students have the opportunity to perform in multiple productions. Whether a student is learning about the history of theater in the classroom or acting on stage, they will become well-rounded in all aspects of our program. As our students grow in their knowledge, they are then able to take advanced classes in which they are instructed on script analysis, scene study, and explore the relationship between visual elements such as design and directing.

The theatre department at USJ is very proud of the work they do in the community.

Students, along with the theatre director, Erica Davidson, have written plays for local organizations as an avenue to raise awareness and money.

Students from first grade through 12th grade performed in Bedtime Stories (Told By Dad) (Who Messed Them Up) September 10-12 at Blankenship Theater. This production was a great play for the entire family and featured a fun dance number.

During the play, it was Dad’s turn to tell his three rambunctious children their bedtime stories, but as he was fuzzy on the details, the classics became creative: a prince with a snoring problem spiced up The Princess and The Pea, The Boy Who Cried Wolf cried dinosaur instead, and Rumpelstiltskin helped turn all that pesky gold into straw. You may have thought you knew your fairy tales, but not the way Dad told them.

Musical In September, USJ students performed Annie JR. Based on the popular comic strip and adapted from the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, with a beloved book and score by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, Annie JR. featured everyone’s favorite little redhead in her very first adventure.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charmed everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie was determined to find the parents who had abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, finding a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

In November, the University School of Jackson’s theater department took advantage of an international opportunity to raise funds for its arts program as well as do something fun and different as the students presented All Together Now. “While we’re one of the few schools that were able to continue with arts productions in some form through the pandemic, many schools were not,” said Tammy Grant, the musical theater director for USJ. “So Music Theater International (MTI) was gracious to allow school theater programs like ours to perform 15 classical hits from Broadway free of charge as a way to give the school arts programs a chance to raise funds.”

MTI made 35 songs available to be performed, and each school was allowed to choose up to 15 to perform, and the rights waiver was good for the weekend of November 13-14 only.

USJ’s students performed different songs including “Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray, “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress, and “Take a Chance on Me” from Mamma Mia! Grant credited USJ theater director Erica Davidson with choreography from the event, and the production also included testimonials from a few USJ arts graduates telling attendees what being a part of the arts at USJ has meant to them.

Jazz 8th - Diego Montoya - Middle School Band The band program at USJ has been continuously successful in producing well-seasoned musicians. Nearly every senior who leaves the program is offered some type of college scholarship for band.

Band instructor Tom Grant starts recruiting students for band in fifth grade. He visits music classes and demonstrates instruments with band members, who also play for various Lower School events. Grant first introduces new band students to the various instruments so they can choose what they want to play. “It is all about exposing them to the instruments in the first week and encouraging them not just to play what their friends play,” said Grant, who has been teaching band for more than 30 years.

Students Shine in Musical Performances USJ’s extensive fine arts program begins in the Lower School with visual arts and music enrichment classes.

Starting in Jr. Kindergarten, classes stage annual musical productions.

Kindergarten performed Lemonade for the first time on USJ’s stage replacing Circus! Circus! First grade performed to Elfis and the Sleigh Riders. Second grade performed Go West! Third grade performed to Lights Camera Christmas!.

These performances wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and talents from music teachers Leslie Scott and Elizabeth Atkins.

“USJ’s musicals hold a special place in the hearts of students, parents, grandparents, and alumni” said Scott who teaches Junior Cubs through first grade. “Our hope is that we are sparking a love for the arts in the hearts and minds of future artists.”

“Performing on stage teaches many invaluable lessons to our students,” said Atkins who teaches second grade through fifth grade. “In addition to creating memories, they learn stage and theater terminology. Each group of students brings a unique dynamic to the performance, and I enjoy watching them grow each year.”

Gloria Reese DiCostanzo was born on October 20, 2021, to Sara Kirkland DiCostanzo (‘05) and her husband, Andrew. She weighed 7 lbs 1 oz and was 18.5 inches long. Her big sister, Nora, is so proud.

Olivia Hughes (‘12) married John Spencer Pickering on October 16, 2021, at The Estate at Cherokee Dock.

The couple met while attending dental school at the University of Tennessee. They now reside in Memphis, Tennessee.

Gregory Mitchael Wilkins was born on September 10, 2021, to Abbey Orr Wilkins (‘11) and her husband Mark.

Elaine Margaret Overbey was born on September 29, 2021, to Hillary Ross Overbey (‘10) and her husband Jake Overbey (‘11).

Austin Orr (‘14) and wife Amber welcomed baby girl, Parker Jo, on December 16, 2021. She weighed 6 lb 13 oz.

Jon Chesley Dennison, II was born December 17, 2021, to Jenny Dennison (‘01) and her husband Chesley (‘00). He weighed 9.5 pounds. Big sister Sophie is a student at USJ and is so proud.

Poppy George Hayes was born to Melissa Morrison Hayes (‘06) and Brad Hayes (‘94) on November 3, 2021. She weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and was 9 1/4 inches long. Her big brother, Hart, is currently at USJ. Poppy is enrolled to start USJ in August.

Margaret Jones (‘13) and Conner Adkins (‘13) married on Oct. 23, 2021, at the bride’s grandparents’ home in Humboldt, Tennessee.

After both graduating from USJ in 2013, Margaret and Conner attended Southern Methodist University and Ole Miss, respectively. The couple now lives in Dallas, Texas, where Conner works as a financial analyst for CBRE Capital Advisors and Margaret is a senior integrated marketing specialist for Mary Kay Inc.‘s U.S. market, supporting the company’s consumer advertising and public relations efforts.

Garrett Guymon (‘16) married Madalyn Coulston on October 9, 2021. They dated for the better part of eight years.

Garrett graduated from USJ in 2016 while Madalyn graduated from Crockett County the same year. They became reacquainted at Union University where Madalyn received her nursing degree. Garrett now works as a preload supervisor at UPS, and Madalyn is a nurse at Faith Family Medical Clinic in Brownsville. They reside in Jackson with their two fur babies, Josie and Honey.

Darby Kate Douglas (‘13) married her college sweetheart Austin Turner on October 17, 2021, in Pisgah, Alabama. Darby works as a Reliability Engineer at the U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center. The couple reside in Huntsville, Alabama. with their pup, Dorothy.

MEMORIAMS Former board member of USJ, David William Horton, age 77, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on the morning of November 19, 2021. David was born October 19, 1944, in Memphis, Tennessee to Rev. Robert Yandell Horton and Willie Mae McAlexander Horton. He was the youngest of four sons. He is survived by his wife, Laurie Smith Issler Horton, daughter Amy Horton Bunton (Michael), son Bart Wilbur Horton (Neka), and their mother, Jo Horton O’Cain.

He is also survived by his “bonus” son Philip F. Issler, Jr (Lisa).

His children blessed him with eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was a very proud grandfather and bragged about his grandchildren often. David is survived by two brothers, Curtis Horton of Madison, Ala., and Charles Horton (Dixie) of Memphis, Tennessee He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins who have long stayed connected through the Horton Family Reunion held in Milan, Tennessee each July. David was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, John Robert Horton.

Coach Jimmy Carey, age 50, died Friday, November 26, 2021, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 11, 1971, in Huntingdon, Tennessee, the son of Jimmy Carey, Sr. and Martha Phiffer Carey. Jimmy was very athletic and loved baseball and golf. He played collegiate baseball at Jackson State Community College and at the University of Tennessee Martin. He was the conference player of the year in 1992 and team captain in 1994. He became head baseball coach at the University School of Jackson in 1996, winning the state championship in 1999, 2001, and 2002.

He was inducted into both the Carroll County Hall of Fame and Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame.

Wanting to spend more time with his family, he began selling pharmaceuticals. He started playing golf in early 2010’s and never looked back. He fell in love with the game, working as hard to improve his game as he did coaching baseball to others. While successful in every avenue, his true passion was people. His joy came from seeing others success and helping people reach whatever goal they set out to. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father. Other than his mother, survivors are his wife Jenny McGee Carey and sons, Logan Reed Carey (‘16) and Caleb Mac Carey (‘19), all of Jackson, Tennessee.

Coach Tommy Browder departed this life on September 15, 2021 in Lexington, Tennessee, at the age of 70 years. Tommy was born June 3, 1951, in Selmer, Tennessee the son of Dortha Walker Browder Naylor and the late Bill Browder. Browder graduated from University of Tennessee at Martin with Bachelor of Science degree in Education. His coaching career spanned more than 35 years and began at Michie Elementary School in the early 70’s. While at Michie, he coached football and girls’ softball. He landed his first head football coaching job at Adamsville High School, coaching from 1977-84. From ‘85-’88, he crossed the river to be the head coach at Hardin County High School. He came home in 1989, to coach at McNairy Central High School for the next 20 years (‘892008). His record at MCHS was 142-82; he was inducted into the McNairy Central Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. He left Tennessee to coach in Long Beach, Miss., for three years (‘09’11) before retiring. After a short retirement, Coach started in 30

Scotts Hill (‘15-’16) as offensive coordinator and has been at USJ since 2017 as offensive coordinator. He was passionate about the game of football and making a difference in the lives of the young men he coached. As much as he loved football, he also loved ELVIS. His Elvis impersonations began with the yearly production of Hee Haw. He would perform at local festivals, charity events, and even made it to the finals in Branson, Mo. His voice and likeness of Elvis brought many smiles and laughter to his audiences. Browder enjoyed traveling to the beach, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, and Ole Miss Rebels. He exercised regularly often running six miles before school and participated in marathons. He is survived by two sons, Bart Browder and wife Kendra of Gallatin, Tennessee, Blake Browder and wife Shannon of Nashville, Tennessee; mother, Dortha Browder Naylor of Bethel Springs, Tennessee; a brother, Jeff Browder and wife Mary Lu of Clarksville, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Kellen and Mills Browder; companion, Marsha Milam of Lexington, Tennessee; and a host of extended family and friends.

John S. Pearson, Jr. (‘80) passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021, from a heart attack at his home in Memphis.

John was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 4, 1962, to Dr. and Mrs. John Spellings Pearson, Sr. While he was born in Memphis and returned there later in life, he spent his childhood years in Jackson, Tennessee John attended Old Hickory Academy and graduated from there in 1980.

During his time in West Tennessee, you could find him on many frigid winter mornings duck or goose hunting with his father until his father’s death in 1976. He always spoke so fondly of those times later in his life. After graduation from high school, John moved to Memphis and began his lengthy career in the culinary arts realm. If you ever had a favorite fine dining restaurant in Memphis over the last 40 years, John probably cooked your meal there at least once. Many key culinary institutions in Memphis have been lucky enough to have John work on their line, and he was a living, breathing oral history of the Memphis fine dining scene. John was the anchor of many kitchens, working the grill station, helping with the pantry, and occasionally at his most recent restaurant as the saucier- one of the most skilled and respected jobs in any kitchen. Many have said that John was an absolute joy to work with. Maybe you will recall his grandmother’s Oc’s Peas from the Squash Blossom, Crawfish Pie, Mussels in Jamaican Run Down Sauce, Snapper with Black Bean Buerre Blanc or Shrimp and Habanero Vanilla.

His extensive experience and unflagging work ethic made him an incredible teammate, but his greatest quality was the sense of camaraderie and pride he brought to the kitchen and instilled in his colleagues. John was also the rare kind of individual who made his living with his hands, but whose curious mind thrived on every sort of intellectual pursuit.

John was a fan of music, film, and writing, particularly of jazz and the works of Terrence Malick, David Lynch, Paul Thomas Anderson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Michel Houllebecq. He loved to discuss his passions with others, and many were the nights when John would be leading a post-shift seminar about the merits of his favorite cinematographers. John is survived by his son, Connor Willis Pearson, and sister, Amy Pearson Griffin (Will).

Alumni Spotlight: Audrey Davis Finishes in 1st Place at St. Jude Marathon University School of Jackson alumna and former Union University women’s cross country standout, Audrey Hazlehurst Davis, finished first in the 2021 St. Jude Women’s Marathon.

Davis was the only female with a time under three hours at 2:59:38.

Her time put her 21st overall among men and women participants.

Audrey Hazlehurst Davis is married to Jared Davis, also a USJ alumnus and baseball standout.

The St. Jude Memphis Half Marathon is a 26.2-mile run through the heart of downtown Memphis benefiting the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital is leading the way in how the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

CLASS REUNIONS The Class of 1976 could not have had a more beautiful night for their 45th reunion. Twenty-four classmates attended at Frank and Darlene Lawrence’s Barn in Huntersville. The Barn was decorated perfectly with fall decor, along with a fire pit outside surrounded by hay bales for roasting marshmallows and catching up with old friends and classmates. The class will have their next gathering in two years when they all celebrate turning 65! A huge thank you goes out to Molly (Woodruff) Hymers, Benita (Knight) Barkley, Mary (Hill) Powell, and Dr. Molly (McLemore) Rheney for all of their efforts in planning such a successful event.
