In 2008, USJ had one of the most successful Math-AThons in the nation when it raised $34,683. “This has been a rewarding experience for our children to raise money for such a wonderful cause,” Moore said. “USJ is such a giving community, and I hope that this opportunity will inspire us all.” USJ’s focus on community service begins in the Lower School with activities like the St. Jude Math-aThon and continues through Middle School and the Upper School, where students must have 50 hours of community service credit in order to graduate. The Math-A-Thon is a great opportunity for teachers to introduce children to the importance of giving back to others, according to Busby. Thanks to the generosity of supporters and events like the Math-A-Thon, families at St. Jude never have to pay for anything, he said. “We were so touched by USJ’s decision to dedicate this year’s St. Jude Math-A-Thon to the memory of Mrs. Yelverton. She was truly a friend of St. Jude, and we are grateful to Mrs. Moore for leading such an emotional and uplifting campaign this year. Both of these ladies and the entire USJ community will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”
