A School that makes a difference The School of Health and Wellbeing provides a vibrant learning community committed to enhancing the quality of health and social care delivery, through provision of relevant, innovative and professionally-focused courses.

We currently deliver courses across four main sites at Wolverhampton City, Walsall, Burton-Upon-Trent and Telford Campuses. Our range of post qualifying, continuing professional development (CPD) and postgraduate qualifications cater for practitioners at every stage of their careers.

We are confident that we have the right course to prepare you for the challenging health and social care environment of the future. You may want to top-up your nursing qualifications to degree level in readiness for the transition to an all graduate profession from 2013. Opportunities exist to enhance your knowledge in social work, where up-to-date skills are crucial for maintaining high levels of care. Or perhaps you wish to expand your expertise in Public Health, one of the key areas indentified for development by the current UK Government and a growing area internationally.

We have well-established, productive partnerships with local and regional NHS Trusts, local authorities, independent healthcare providers, the local and regional prison service, the voluntary sector and professional bodies.

We have strong links with hospices, and together with Compton Hospice and Douglas Macmillan Hospice, the School of Health and Wellbeing offers modules and courses that focus on the subject of palliative and end of life care. These will offer you the opportunity for your learning to be facilitated by clinicians currently working in practice.

School facilities In addition to our excellent traditional library resources, the School has a range of state-of-the-art facilities. These include simulated hospital wards, a general practitioner room, a two bedded assessment area and a ‘home environment’. We have impressive lecture theatres and classrooms, advanced IT rooms and Skills Centres.

Within our Skills Centres we have some of the latest teaching technology, including surgical and medical training equipment and our SimFamily patient simulators. These portable and advanced patient simulators can support you in the development of essential practice skills within a safe environment. In addition, the School has its own Multi-Media Unit; its role is to support staff in creating innovative learning materials and the provision of inter-professional learning opportunities.

University-wide facilities The University’s Learning Centre provides a range of advanced resources, including electronic materials and facilities to assist you in your study and research. Our social learning areas offer access to the latest IT equipment and an ideal place to work closely with your peer group.

The University of Wolverhampton’s Online Learning Framework (WOLF) is an example of our commitment to technology supported learning. WOLF is an interactive learning tool which will enable you to access course notes and support materials from any location with an internet connection.

Student Support We strive to make your time at University a pleasurable experience and as a School we are proud of the support we provide to our students. Courses are normally offered part-time over a two-year period, and provide opportunities for both personal and professional development.

Improving people’s lives is at the heart of the courses we offer, and the School constantly strives to identify service improvements through collaboration with health and social care providers. DipHE Nursing Studies

This course is designed to meet the workforce needs of local and regional healthcare organisations through the development of healthcare workers, to fulfil the role of Assistant Practitioners.

The course will enable current and aspiring health care assistants to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to deliver and support high quality patient care.

Designed to help you build on previous studies in nursing and link theory to practice, this course allows you to choose a selection of modules tailored to your personal and professional development needs.

CertHE Palliative and End of Life Care This award aims to improve the patient and carer palliative and end of life care experience, through the provision of information and exploration of evidence-based practice. It will be of interest to individuals who are employed in an area where they will encounter clients with support and palliative care needs. The course is designed and taught by clinical and educational experts based in our partner hospices. Drawing upon their expertise, and through the examination of best evidence, your insight, knowledge and skills will be enhanced.

DipHE Health and Social Care Practice Our course enables you to develop your knowledge in the field of health and social care. You will be able to select from a range of modules to develop a programme of studies relevant to your ongoing development.

DipHE Palliative and End of Life Care Building on previous studies in this area and providing evidence of learning that informs practice, this award will enable you to apply an enquiring approach to your work. Top-up courses Our top-up degrees

Top-up degrees are flexible, fast-track routes to gaining a degree-level qualification. They recognise and build upon your existing qualifications and experience. We offer top-up degrees with, and without honours; either qualification will be acceptable when nursing becomes an all graduate profession in 2013, but we actively encourage you to progress your studies through to honours level in order to gain valuable knowledge in subjects such as leadership, service improvement and research.

Progressing your studies In order to continue your studies to honours level, we offer you a progression route to either: BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies or BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Practice

BSc Nursing Studies (Top-up)* This degree is a course of study especially created to develop graduate skills and enhance the ability of current mentors to support the increasing number of student nurses completing the nursing degree programme.

BSc Nursing Studies This fast-track degree course consists of an initial 60 credits focusing on leadership, health and social care policy and service improvement. Following this, you may wish to consolidate your learning through progression to the BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies (requiring a further 60 credits of study at level 6).

The course reflects our consultation processes with stakeholder organisations and is designed to benefit employers who wish to provide a high quality learning experience for student nurses and improve the quality of care for patients. *You must be sponsored by your employer in order to undertake this course.

BSc (Hons) Emergency Practitioner (Top-up) This course is designed to enable and empower practitioners from a variety of first contact and emergency care settings to critically analyse the role and responsibilities of the emergency practitioner; and to safely and effectively fulfil this dynamic and developing role, taking note of its expanded scope of practice and principles of professional accountability.

Return to Nursing Practice This course will enable qualified nurses to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulatory requirements for renewal of registration and re-entry to the Register following a break in practice. This course enables previously registered practitioners who have been out of practice for a period of three years or more to fulfil current NMC requirements and to return to the appropriate part of the register. As a result, you will be ready to enter clinical practice as a safe and competent practitioner, able to provide a high standard of care and be accountable for that care.

Masters courses MSc Nursing In 2010, the Department of Health identified the need for advanced nursing practitioners and the MSc Nursing will help registered nurses prepare for advanced practice in any sphere of care. This new and exciting course will provide a highly flexible set of learning opportunities and experiences, preparing registered nurses for advanced nursing practice and leadership roles.

Using research and other forms of evidence, students will develop extensive knowledge to progress beyond the requirements for first level registration, and develop the skills and competencies to carry out advanced nursing practice. This course will enable students to progress to doctoral level study.

MSc Emergency Planning Resilience and Response This course enables you to develop Masters level education in the concepts, theories and academic skills for emergency planning, resilience, business continuity and disaster management and recovery. The course caters for professionals who may already be working in this field or those wishing to embark on a career in emergency planning. There will be opportunities to take part in exercises and training in simulated emergency settings with a wide range of professional organisations involved in emergency planning.

PGCert Management of Passenger Transport Emergency Incidents The PGCert Management of Passenger Transport Emergency Incidents has been designed for people working in the transport sector, emergency services and local authorities – or those seeking careers in these areas. The course consists of three modules, covering all aspects of passenger emergency incidents, including planning, risk, communication and investigations.

MSc Commissioning in Health and Social Care This course aims to provide you with a Masters level education in the concepts, theories and academic and practical skills that will enable you to meet the challenges of commissioning health and social care services. The course offers a flexible approach to enable you to study at a pace that suits your work demands.

You will have the opportunity to work with a range of experts to acquire new skills to enable you to commission health and social care services effectively and aligned to developing governmental requirements.

MSc Lymphoedema Care This programme will equip you, as a health and social care professional, with the necessary skills and knowledge required to ensure the highest possible standards of lymphoedema care are provided to people with a life limiting progressive illness, including those with a malignant or non-malignant disease.

It aims to enable practitioners to demonstrate expertise and advanced skills in the management of a case-load and healthcare staff in the support of people with lymphoedema.

MSc Palliative and End of Life Care Studying this award will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills in the principles and practice of holistic palliative and end of life care. Education in community health Being able to adapt and meet the demands of a 21st century healthcare system – which is focused on providing the highest quality care in a local setting – is one of the real challenges that face practitioners in primary care. Our courses recognise the demands of the sector and equip practitioners with a set of skills to meet their challenges with confidence.

You must obtain a Primary Care Trust secondment or sponsorship to study this course. There is a practice component throughout the course, culminating in a 10 week practice placement. The specialist modules enable you to critically examine current and emerging issues in your field.

Our BSc (Hons) aims to prepare you to become a competent Specialist Community Nurse, equipping you for general practice and primary care, or caring for patients within their own home in the community. You will develop a range of skills, including reflective practice and leadership.

BSc (Hons)/PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting/School Nursing) Depending on your level of academic achievement to date, this course prepares you for the role of Specialist Community Public Health Nursing practitioner – fit for practice in a designated field of primary care and enabling you to register your qualification on the third part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register. You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop, enhance and evaluate your own performance and learn the importance of innovative practice, the need for creativity and the development of leadership skills.

This course enables you to meet the professional requirements for practice. The majority of nurses who work in primary healthcare follow a structured pattern of career development – following initial registration with the NMC, the sequence is Primary Practice followed by Specialist Practice culminating with Higher Level Practice.

Our PGDip will develop your skills as a specialist practitioner, to improve and develop knowledge and skills in either Practice Nursing or District Nursing. You will gain the necessary intellectual insight needed to evaluate the economic, social and political influences that affect all aspects of healthcare, in order to play a proactive role within your specialist area. This is a professional course and it incorporates a practice component which runs throughout and culminates in a 10-week placement at the end of the course. Practice is normally carried out within your place of work.

Non-Medical Prescribing

This course equips you with the skills required to become proficient in Specialist Practice Nursing/District Nursing, academically and professionally prepared to play an important role within a multi-disciplinary team.

This V300 Nursing and Midwifery Council programme is for nurses and allied health professionals. You will undertake two modules: The Study of Advanced Pharmacology and NonMedical Prescribing Practice for Non-Medical Prescribers.

MSc Primary Healthcare Practice (Top-up) If you already have a PGDip Specialist Practice, this course will allow you to progress directly to the final year of postgraduate study and work towards a Masters degree. Under the guidance of an experienced supervisor, you will bring together advanced research skills in the production of a research project in the field of primary healthcare.

Successful completion of the course will enhance your employment progression in your specialist area.

Our courses are designed to develop and integrate the underpinning theory and practice to prepare registered professionals to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively under the professional regulations pertaining to the relevant drug formulary.

We offer two courses: Non-Medical Prescribing Programme – V300 (6NH033 and 6NH026)

You will require health service industry nomination and support by a designated medical practitioner/mentor in line with professional standards, in order to gain the skills and knowledge for extended/supplementary prescribing from the British National Formulary.

Non-Medical Prescribing Programme – V150 (6HN032) For nurses only, this V150 Nursing and Midwifery Council programme is suitable for nurses who wish to gain the skills and knowledge for prescribing from the Community Practitioner’s Formulary. On successful completion, the practitioner will meet the required professional standards for Non-Medical Prescribing from the Community Practitioner’s

MA Social Work This graduate entry-level course is designed to equip social work students with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for qualification. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have met the published professional standards of the General Social Care Council (GSCC) and be ready to begin their first year in practice as a competent and safe practitioner.

Successful students will be able to register with the GSCC as a qualified and registered social worker.

Service user/carer perspectives and inter-professional working are embedded into all aspects of the course, and staff from a range of relevant disciplines also contribute.

Postgraduate Certificate Mental Health Practice for Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMPH) This award runs from October to June, and on successful completion you will be eligible for accreditation as an AMHP under the Mental Health Act 1983. You will study the legal and policy context of practice, and look critically at concepts such as the social model of mental health and evidence-based practice.

You will also develop specialised skills in this complex area of practice.

You will attend for one day a week at the University for taught sessions, which include a high level of interactive learning.

During the course you will need to undertake 43 days practice under the Mental Health Act (usually in the form of a placement with a mental health service) and five days of educational visits. You will need to produce a portfolio demonstrating your competence in practice, as well as academic assignments.

Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health, Social Care and Allied Professionals (with eligibility to apply for NMC Professional Teacher status) This course will aid your individual development as a teacher – whether you are a nurse, midwife, social worker or allied professional – and is designed to enable you to: •

develop knowledge and skills for teaching, facilitating and managing learning and assessment at higher education level within a health, social care or allied professional setting

develop specific expertise in learning and teaching and add value to your existing professional practice

•

apply knowledge of teaching, learning & assessment to practical situations that encompass the complexity of professional practice.

You will explore the complex learning needs of professional students, commissioners and other stakeholders within your area of practice, and develop educational experiences that are context and evidence based. You will evaluate your own interventions as a teacher and propose interventions for improving the quality of the learner experience overall; studying alongside other allied health and social care practitioners in a shared learning environment. Successful completion of the PGCert will enable you to pursue a professional teaching career either within the higher education arena or within your practice area.

The award is approved by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and meets the NMC teacher standard. If you are a nurse or a midwife, successful completion of the PGCert enables you to record your professional teaching qualification on the professional register and gain employment in higher education as a lecturer or within the practice environment as a professional teacher.

Practice Teacher Preparation

Practice Teacher Modules

Modules were designed to meet the requirements of the NMC Standards to support learning and assessment in practice (NMC 2008) stage 3: practice teacher standard. The course is mandatory for registrants wishing to support and assess students undertaking NMC approved courses in specialist community public health nursing, who have previously fulfilled the NMC requirements to become a mentor.

Two options are available for practice teacher preparation to meet the needs of practitioners who wish to study at different academic levels (6 & 7). Both modules build upon the foundations of the (SLAiP) Mentorship Module by developing on the knowledge and skills needed to recognise and meet the learning needs of students undertaking NMC approved specialist community public health courses. The modules are practice-based – enabling learning at work, from work, for work.

Practice Teacher Preparation requires successful completion of the following modules:

(SLAiP) Mentorship Module (6HW049) The NMC has published a framework with associated standards (NMC 2008) that is used to determine the abilities of those supporting learning and assessment in practice. This module allows nurses and midwives to meet the stage 2 mentor standards and other healthcare professionals to develop their mentorship skills.

Research and Enterprise Research and development are viewed as an integral part of the School of Health and Wellbeing’s activities, underpinning learning and teaching within subject areas and ensuring that there is a rigorous evidence-base for effective healthcare practice.

Our research opportunities: Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing This is an exciting inter-professional course, designed to develop competent researchers through a programme of training in research methods leading to a research thesis. It places emphasis on service providers and health organisations taking ownership for research in practice, whereby doctoral students can facilitate the development of local research strategies or suggest service improvements – strengthening the links between practice and universities.

The curriculum supports both work-located and work-related learning. This innovative course is designed for experienced professional practitioners, rather than for academic student researchers. This PhD supports researchers in professional practice through work-based research that focuses on their professional needs and the needs of their organisations.

We also offer opportunities within the Centre for Health and Social Care Improvement (CHSCI), which is a multi-disciplinary partnership within the School of Health and Wellbeing. CHSCI’s remit is to develop a new understanding between higher education, health and social care organisations, and businesses to improve planning, delivery and evaluation of services, and the development of people. The vision is to work continuously to improve the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, promoting health and social wellbeing, and contributing to the development of appropriate policies and interventions locally, nationally and internationally.

Within our School we publish an online journal, entitled the Journal of Health and Social Care Improvement, that contributes to the evidence base and critical reflection required to help drive changes and improvements in health and social care education, research and practice.

Enterprise As an employer we can offer support and opportunities to you through our Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs).

The University leads a consortium, consisting of 12 universities in the West Midlands, to deliver KTPs to help improve the economic prosperity of the region.
