Audacious, outrageous and sublime the design legacy of Alexander McQueen Wednesday 24 June to Thursday 16 July

The 2015 International Summer School will explore Savage Beauty and all it stands for – the audacious, outrageous and sublime.

Highlights of the 22 night stay

The lecture programme will delve deeply into the thinking process of a designer such as McQueen and analyse how ideas are gathered through inspiration and knowledge from everywhere and anything. Film, theatre, emotions and art are just a few design points that will be looked at to create informative, beautiful final outcomes.

• Workshops, lectures and seminars which will involve the production of a small body of work that illustrates a personal response to the theme of the ‘Audacious, outrageous and sublime’ • Three night stay in London, including a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum to view Savage Beauty exhibition by Alexander McQueen, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain and What is Luxury?

• Other organised visits to: - New Designers exhibition, Islington, London - Design Museum, London - Wightwick Manor, National Trust - Wolverhampton Art Gallery - Shrewsbury Castle and Art Gallery - RAF Cosford - Library of Birmingham and Birmingham Museum.

• The course ends with a presentation of work and critique. Certificates will be presented at the farewell supper on the final evening of the course.

Design workshops will look in detail at the beauty of texture and layers by indulging in various practical techniques to focus towards a final design solution for an interiors, accessories, textiles or fashion outcome.

The course will begin with a visit to London and the V&A museum to view Alexandra McQueen’s Savage Beauty exhibition. Students will also have the opportunity to view accompanying exhibitions at the V&A Museum – for example, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain and What is Luxury? This will provide the visual stimulus to inspire and determine the students’ individual approach to the project that will be explored at the University of Wolverhampton during the remainder of the course.

The course is suitable for students studying design subjects in fashion, textiles, accessory design and interior design offering opportunities for the design conclusion to be interpreted in one of the following formats: • A high-end fashion collection • A luxury fashion accessories collection • A contemporary interior space.
