Welcome to the WLV Alumni Association A warm welcome to the spring WLV Alumni Association e-zine, as we look forward to this summer’s special Homecoming event – a chance for alumni, students, staff and guests to get together and reconnect for a night of music, comedy and fun. The big bash takes place on 23 June at City Campus and features headline guest, comedian Tom Stade. All tickets cost just £15, which includes a free drink and food voucher – get yours now! Among those alumni we hope to see there are our most recent graduates, who bid farewell to the University at graduation ceremonies in March this year. Of course, graduating is never a final farewell – becoming a graduate doesn’t mean losing contact with your friends or your alma mater, it’s the beginning of a relationship

that lasts a lifetime. We were happy to welcome more than 850 new members to the WLV Alumni Association at spring graduation. As part of the Association, a global network of over 100,000 alumni in more than 130 countries around the world, you remain a valued member of the University and we hope to remain a lifelong source of support to help you achieve your personal and professional aspirations, whatever they may be. Enjoy the issue and see you at Homecoming!

Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing: News New healthcare course launched

Students promote sporting opportunities in India

Graduate midwife on One Born Every Minute

A new Medical Science and Clinical Practice degree, designed in partnership with the University of Birmingham, has been launched. The degree is encouraging students from a wide range of backgrounds to pursue a career in healthcare and has a strong clinical focus with an emphasis on disease processes, pathology, anatomy and physiology. Student placements include working in care with GPs and nurses as well as shadowing consultants and clinical scientists.

Students from a range of sports courses travelled to India to run training camps for schoolchildren earlier this year. The sports camps were held for the schoolchildren of Neerja Modi School in Jaipur as well as some fun developmental sessions for local children from deprived backgrounds. Find out more about the trip.

Midwifery graduate, Shantelle Smith, shared her experiences on the hit TV programme, One Born Every Minute on Channel 4. Featuring the drama and emotion of the maternity unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, the 28-year-old appeared in two episodes (21 March, 4 April). Shantelle, who graduated in 2015, was inspired to train to be a midwife following her own experiences having her daughter Amiyah.

Foundation Degree Apprenticeship The first cohort of over 50 healthcare staff have started a new Nursing Associate Foundation Degree Apprenticeship. The role of a Nursing Associate aims to bridge the gap between healthcare support workers and registered nurses, enabling nurses to spend more time on clinical duties and take more of a lead in decisions about patient care. Kellie Morris, a clinical support worker at Walsall NHS Trust said: “I feel my patients need more from me and this is the best way to make sure they get what they need. It allows me to earn as I’m learning and it’s in a setting I feel comfortable with. I feel excited, anxious and hungry for knowledge and I’m loving every minute of it. I hope to gain a better knowledge of nursing and to carry on to complete a Registered Nurse Degree.” Check out this year’s Freshers!

What our graduates say…

Lucy LucyTaylor, Taylor,25, 25,graduated graduated2016. 2016. “Completing my PG Cert in Education was a challenging, yet rewarding, qualification which has prepared me for my teaching career. It gave me a breadth of experience working in different schools; I was even able to do a short teaching placement in India. “My lecturers were very supportive and knowledgeable. Many have been head teachers or worked within Ofsted, and it was useful to be guided by professionals in the field of education. I made new friends and we still now share teaching ideas and support each other.” “I have now been a teacher for nearly two years; I’m educational visits co-ordinator at my school and lead History and Geography. It truly is the most rewarding job where every day it feels like you are making such a difference.” Places are still available for Primary, Secondary and PCE courses! Apply now!

Image 01 Shantelle Smith (pictured second from the left) appeared on Channel 4’s One Born Every Minute.

Shantelle, from south Birmingham, said: “At first I wasn’t sure about being on TV, but a woman came in who wanted to be filmed so I said yes. It was nerve-wracking but then I got used to the cameras and the production team were really nice. When I left school I was a hairdresser and beautician – I knew I wanted to be a midwife but didn’t think I was ready as it’s such a big responsibility. But having my daughter was a turning point and made me realise that was what I wanted to do. I love my job. Sometimes it’s hard and there are stressful times but when you get home you can think ‘I brought a new life into the world today’ and that’s amazing.” 01
