The 2026 football season marks a historic new chapter for UWF as our Argonauts take the field for the first time at the NCAA Division I level. This moment represents the culmination of years of hard work, determination and belief from our student-athletes, coaches, supporters and the entire UWF community. Since the first season in 2016, UWF football has built a legacy defined by excellence. In just 10 years, the Argos have competed for championships, raised trophies and made history — and now, we’re taking the next step. With a new level of competition and a new stadium on the rise thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Darrell and Debbie Gooden and so many others, our studentathletes will compete on a stage worthy of their ambition, and our fans will have a game day experience like never before. I’m grateful to Head Coach Kaleb Nobles, his coaching staff and our entire UWF Athletics team for the leadership and commitment they bring to this program every day. I’m also thankful for the energy and spirit our cheerleaders, Argo Athletic Band and Army ROTC Argonaut Battalion bring to game day, as well as the fans who have believed in our Argos every step of the way. Most of all, I want to thank our student-athletes for choosing to be Argos and for representing UWF with pride, resilience and heart. You are at the center of this historic moment, and we couldn’t be more proud to have you lead us into this new era. Our first Division I football season is here. Let’s make history together. Go Argos!

It’s a historic moment for UWF athletics and Argos Football. On April 2, 2026 UWF announced it’s move to NCAA Division I beginning in the fall of 2026 with teams competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) and football in the United Athletic Conference (UAC). Thursday’s opener against Southern Illinois becomes the first-ever FCS football game in program history. UWF brought in 73 new players to the roster this season and returned just seven starters from last year (three offensive players, two defensive players, and two special team players). Running back TJ Lane returns to the Argos as one of the key players for the offense. Last season Lane rushed for 869 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging over 72 yards per game. On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt senior Byron Puryear is back at defensive end following injuries over the past two seasons. Puryear returned late last season and made an impact in his limited time on the field. The Chicago native made 14 tackles including five TFLs, two sacks, two pass break ups and two QB hurries. Last year, the Argos rallied off nine straight wins and walked into the No. 2 seed in the region. UWF took down North Greenville in the opening playoff game, 43-19 before falling to Newberry in the second round. Thursday night’s game with No. 16 Southern Illinois will be one of the biggest tests the Argos have faced in the program’s young history.

Southern Illinois received the No. 16 national ranking in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll. The team finished 7-5 last year and 4-4 in their Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Salukis are led by preseason All-American quarterback D.J. Williams who threw for 2,846 yards with 22 touchdowns and ran for 847 yards and 18 touchdowns. The SIU offense was clicking on all cylinders last season, averaging 446 yards per game while finding the endzone 56 times. The team rushed for over 207 yards per game.
