Our New Home

UWS is so much more than just bricks and mortar. Our new campus will further facilitate our ability to Take the Lead in integrated health care education. The new campus will be an expression of shared values, a symbol of bold leadership and proof of the growing demand for evidence-informed, integrated, whole-person health care.

Dr. Minga Guerrero: 2018 Alumna of the Year Dr. Dominga “Minga” Guerrero, 1984 graduate of University of Western States, was named the 2018 UWS Alumna of the Year.

UWS trustee Joyce McClure, DC, nominated Dr. Guerrero and has been inspired throughout her career by Dr. Guerrero’s dedication and compassion to the field.

Dr. Guerrero grew up in a family of migrant farm workers in Southern California. Their household, located on a large orange grove, included her great grandmother, grandmother, uncles, parents and siblings. The home was heated by a wood fireplace and they had an ice block refrigerator. One of her duties as a child was to use a plancha (cast iron) to iron incoming migrant worker’s clothes. Her abuela (grandmother) was the migrant camp’s curandera (healer) and was a large source of inspiration for young Minga.

“Dr. Guerrero is really a beacon for female chiropractic physicians and to the advancement of the field overall,” said Dr. McClure.

“She has done a tremendous amount of work and has gone above and beyond in every capacity. She really takes the time to observe issues at hand to make informed and wellreasoned decisions. Always a voice for clarity, honor, compassion and quality of chiropractic care, I can really think of few other doctors who have remained unsung for so long.”

In the 1960s, the Guerrero family moved to the desolate deserts of Joshua Tree and Death Valley. Dr. Guerrero’s father moved the family because, as Mexicans in Orange County, faced ongoing discrimination, such as only being allowed to use public swimming pools on the day before they were cleaned. The family was also denied access to many restaurants and her father was denied the ability to apply for an electrician license.

“My father didn’t want us to continue to experience prejudice that might mold our little minds. He also always told us that we needed to work harder than everyone else, because Mexicans could be labeled as lazy. Our family’s war cry was, ‘¡Somos Guerreros!’– We Are Warriors!”

Inspired by her abuela, Dr. Guerrero wanted to be a healing force for others as well.

2018 Alumnus Dr. Jaime Medina, Lands Associateship through Switchboard Kenneth Delp, DC, class of 2012, needed a Spanish-speaking chiropractic physician to join his clinic in a rural area south of Yakima, Washington. Recently graduated and fluent in Spanish, Jaime Medina, DC, class of 2018, was looking for an associateship and a new home for his family of four.

Finding each other on UWS Switchboard, Dr. Delp and Dr. Medina created a strong team of service-oriented community chiropractic physicians in the Yakima Valley.

“I will be working closely with the Hispanic population of the city and surrounding towns. I am looking forward to using my Spanish more actively and to becoming a close part of the community,” says Dr. Medina.

Dr. Delp encourages others to use the platform, “UWS Switchboard helped me meet a colleague who will help me be successful in my practice and someone who I feel has the same standard of care after graduating from UWS.” Dr. Medina agrees, “I wouldn’t have this new opportunity following graduation had I not discovered UWS Switchboard.

Getting to know the alumni relations department at the school was such a great thing for me. They are always actively looking to connect doctors with students who could benefit from their expertise and knowledge – all you have to do is ask.”

Our goal is to exchange ideas, facilitate meaningful connections and share our vision for the future of integrated health care.

We have also leveraged our connections to move evidence informed practice forward on the political landscape. These are all huge wins for UWS and for the chiropractic profession as a whole.”

Legacy of Gratitude

UWS by the Numbers

In 2018, a dear friend and benefactor of University of Western States (UWS), who wished to remain anonymous, passed away at the age of 93. While not an alumnus of UWS, the benefactor had a great affection for the university and practiced as both a chiropractor and naturopathic physician in Hood River for more than 50 years. To support the UWS mission to advance integrated and conservative health care, the benefactor generously bequeathed more than $420,000. It was asked that the gift be unrestricted, allowing UWS the greatest flexibility in achieving its goals.

For the past several years, the university has diligently focused on creating and advancing a planned giving program for alumni and friends. We are very fortunate to have received commitments from several generous benefactors who have chosen to support UWS as part of their estate. These donors share a common purpose to support the university’s mission to educate the best conservative health care professionals dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care. Our donors truly embody what it means to Take the Lead and we couldn’t be more humbled by their continued support.
