Why Mathematics?

Mathematical ideas and results not only represent some of the highest accomplishments of humanity, but also are an indispensable tool in an ever-increasing array of disciplines. In this sense mathematics has a dual nature: it is both an independent field of study valued for precision of thought and intrinsic beauty, and it is a rich source of methods applicable to fields such as finance, medicine, climate and engineering.

3D PRINTING THE RANK-3 SHI ARRANGEMENT PROFESSOR GREG WARRINGTON ASSOCIATE CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

A challenge in many parts of mathematics is that of visualizing structures that live in four dimensions and higher. Such visualizations are crucial for intuition as often important mathematical intricacies do not arise in lower dimensions.

In this project, the CEMS UVM Fab Lab helped Professor Warrington make a 3D print of a four-dimensional hyperplane arrangement called the rank-3 Shi arrangement.

CONSTRUCTING CURVES FOR CRYPTOGRAPHY PROFESSOR CHRISTELLE VINCENT ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

Of her research, Professor Vincent says, “I am very interested in algebraic curves, which are roughly objects that are given by polynomial equations that look like F(x,y) = 0. To me, it’s striking that there are still a lot of things that we don’t understand about objects that are introduced in middle school.” She is currently working on studying and classifying certain curves so that they can one day serve as the basis for new methods in cryptography.

Mathematics is often described as the “queen of the sciences” and is certainly the basis for the technological explosion of recent years. Mathematics is also an art, with beautiful structures, theorems, and concepts.
