Summer semester is not part of the academic year agreement. Winter break is included in the 2026-2027 academic year housing contract. FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, states that school officials may not disclose personally identifiable information about students nor permit inspection of their records by others without written permission from the student. Students are protected by FERPA as soon as they are admitted to the University of Utah. These records include, but are not limited to: grades, class schedules, student conduct records, identification numbers, housing assignments, and payment information. Questions regarding FERPA may be directed to the Office of the Registrar at 801-581-5808 or registrar@utah.edu. Learn more at registrar. utah.edu. 24/7 SECURITY & STAFF SUPPORT
All University Housing facilities are supported by staff and security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Check out the “Your Residential Experience” section in this guide for more information.
CAMPUS ALERT SYSTEM
The Campus Alert System is a messaging service that alerts students to all potential weather conditions, safety threats, and other emergencies on campus. This system also provides notification to residents in case of an emergency within HDP facilities. University of Utah students are automatically signed up for this service, so do not opt out of this service. Visit alert.utah.edu for more information.
CAMPUS COURTESY ESCORT
It is our priority to provide a safe and welcoming environment to everyone on campus. Courtesy escorts are always available as a resource to students while on campus. Campus Security can escort you to your residence hall, car, or any campus building. Courtesy escorts are available 24 hours a day seven days a week by calling 801-585-COPS (2677). Visit safety.utah.edu for more info.
Housing Policies
GUEST POLICY
HDP residential living areas remain locked at all times. Only students who live in a building have access to enter. A guest is any person who does not live within the building.
OVERNIGHT GUEST POLICY
Residents may host one overnight guest at a time in their academic year room. Hosted guests staying in a space after midnight on weeknights and after 2 a.m. on weekends are defined as overnight guests. These guests must be registered via Housing U. An overnight guest must reside in the hosting resident’s contracted space for sleep and may not reside in common spaces.

Students are responsible for all policies outlined in Policy 6-400: Student Rights and Responsibilities, the HDP website, and in their housing contract. Residents may be required to meet with the Office of the Dean of Students staff to discuss certain situations. All accountability case communication will be sent to the student’s UMail. Students are responsible for checking their UMail and following up per the instructions outlined in the email. The student accountability system is educational in nature, and it is our mission to encourage, facilitate, and support the learning and development of all residents while creating an inclusive and safe living environment.

COMMUNITY DAMAGES
Any instances of damage or vandalism in a community will be divided amongst the residents in that community/building, and the cost will be billed directly to student accounts. Approximately 30 days before students are charged, a notice will be sent to community members in an effort to identify the responsible individual(s) for additional investigation. However, in the event that the responsible party is not identified, the repair cost will be assessed to the impacted community. Please consider the importance of taking care of your home. DINING PLAN FAQs
Who is required to have a dining plan?
• Most first-year students! Dining plans are optional for students living in apartments, pods, and end-cap communities. What constitutes a dining plan week?
• Dining plan weeks start on Friday and end on Thursday.
When does my dining plan renew?
• Dining plans automatically renew at the start of Spring semester.
If I don’t use my dining plan, can I cancel it?
• Failure to use a dining plan does not cancel a student’s financial responsibility for the dining plan. Unused taps do not carry over from week to week.
DIETARY RESTRICTIONS
We offer individualized dining plans tailored to your specific needs. Before the semester begins, please fill out our Allergy & Dietary Needs form, and we will schedule a meeting with you and one of our Campus Chefs to:
• Discuss your allergies or dietary restrictions
• Review menu items and ingredients
• Identify specialty products you may need
• Address cross-contamination concerns
• Develop a personalized dining plan
For specific questions about dietary needs, please contact David Woodruff by email at dwoodruff@housing.utah.edu

AN INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE
University Housing is committed to making each resident feel welcomed and included in our campus communities — including an environment that is welcoming to all gender identities and forms of expression. Students interested in Gender-Inclusive Housing can select this option on the room gender page in the application.
When you complete the housing application, you will select from three housing room classifications. These include, male, female, or gender-inclusive rooms. Room selection/assignments are based on your choice. Per Utah State law, if you select a “Male” or “Female” room, this should align with your sex at birth. Gender-Inclusive housing is available to all students, no matter a students’ gender or sex identity. Gender inclusive rooms are offered in most buildings on campus (except for Gateway Heights, Lassonde Studios, and Trailhead). Gender-inclusive rooms are also offered across all room types (e.g. single, double, pod, apartments, etc). These spaces offer a safe and supportive environment for transgender, non-binary, and LGBTQIA students, but are also available to any student regardless of identity.
