EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING INHOUSE CLINICS

EXTERNSHIPS

Beginning their first year, students are eligible to volunteer with the Pro Bono Initiative (PBI), a voluntary pro bono program, to connect what they have learned in the classroom with real-world clients and issues. PBI is an opportunity to engage with alumni and serve the community. The Pro Bono Initiative operates several free brief advice sites year-round that are staffed by volunteer law students and attorneys, including:

Students assume the role of a lawyer and represent clients under close supervision of faculty. In clinics, students learn through real-world lawyering work, intensive seminars, and regular meetings with faculty supervisors who offer support tailored for each student’s development and learning goals. Clinics include:

Students gain practical skills and substantive training under the supervision of licensed attorneys in the field while earning academic credit.

American Indian Law Community Law: Ogden, Salt Lake, and Sugarhouse Debtor’s Law Expungement Law Family Law Rainbow Law Street Law Veterans Law Wills for Heroes

CREATIVE ADVOCACY LAB: Students, in collaboration with community partners, use creative tools like design thinking, narrative, and visual communication to make legal information accessible to those who need it.

INNOCENCE CLINIC: Students investigate claims of innocence made by individuals convicted of serious crimes in Utah, Wyoming and Nevada.

YEAR-LONG EXTERNSHIP Criminal Process Externships give students opportunities to practice criminal law as prosecution or defense externs.

PRACTICUMS INNOVATING LEGAL SERVICES: Students work with communities to focus on a particular social justice issue with the goal of launching new access to justice solutions that can scale.

INNOVATION FOR JUSTICE: Students develop technologies to empower advocates and advance disruptive change in their communities.

UX4 JUSTICE: Students apply user experience (UX) research and design methods to reimagine how legal technologies can improve access to justice.

SIMULATIONS Through assignments and fictional role-plays, students practice and develop lawyering skills in a classroom setting with faculty supervision and feedback.
