PRO BONO INITATIVE Beginning their first year, students are eligible to volunteer with the Pro Bono Initiative (PBI), a voluntary pro bono program, to connect what they have learned in the classroom with real-world, clients and issues. PBI is an opportunity to engage with alumni and serve the community.

The Pro Bono Initiative operates several free brief advice sites year-round that are staffed by volunteer law students and attorneys, including: American Indian Law Community Law: Ogden, Salt Lake, and Sugarhouse Debtor’s Law Expungement Law Family Law Medical Law Rainbow Law Street Law Veterans Law Wills for Heroes

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN-HOUSE CLINICS Students assume the role of a lawyer and represent clients under close supervision of faculty. In clinics, students learn through real-world lawyering work, intensive seminars, and regular meetings with faculty supervisors who offer support tailored for each student’s development and learning goals. Clinics include:

JUSTICE LAB CLINIC Students represent community groups, non-profit organizations, and government agencies in access to justice and systemic reform projects.

INNOCENCE CLINIC Students investigate claims of innocence made by individuals convicted of serious crimes in Utah, Wyoming and Nevada. The work is done in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center and often involves preparing a wrongful conviction case for litigation.

EXTERNSHIPS

YEAR-LONG EXTERNSHIPS

Environmental at the U.S. Environmental Protection Criminal Process Externships Agency and the Utah Office of give students opportunities to the Attorney General, practice criminal law as Environment and Health prosecution or defense Division externs with placements that include the Salt Lake County Health at Intermountain District Attorney, Salt Lake Healthcare and the Utah Legal Defender Association, Health Policy Project and the Utah Juvenile Defender Attorneys.

Hinckley National at NCAA Regulatory Affairs and the New Ventures Externships CDC Public Health Law immerse students in the world Program of commercializing technologies and launching new ventures with placements Judicial at the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and that include the U of U the Utah Supreme Court Lassonde New Venture Development Center, U of U Legislative at the Utah Technology Venture Governor’s Office, General Commercialization, and counsel and Utah State University Growth Fund.

SEMESTER-LONG EXTERNSHIPS Through semester-long externships, S.J. Quinney students engage in substantial legal work with attorneys and judges in a variety of fields, including (but not limited to): Appellate placements at Zimmerman Booher, LLC and Salt Lake Legal Defender Association Civil at the American Civil Liberties Union and Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake

Students gain practical skills and substantive training under Criminal at the U.S. Attorney’s the supervision of licensed office and Utah Juvenile attorneys in the field while Defender Attorneys earning academic credit.

Securities Law Enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission Victim’s Rights at the Utah Crime Victims Legal Clinic

SIMULATIONS Simulation courses use assignments and fictional role-plays to help students practice and develop lawyering skills in a classroom setting with faculty supervision and feedback.
