PRO BONO INITATIVE Beginning their first year, students are eligible to volunteer with the Pro Bono Initiative (PBI), a voluntary pro bono program, to connect what they have learned in the classroom with real-world, clients and issues. PBI is an opportunity to engage with alumni and serve the community.

The Pro Bono Initiative operates twelve free brief advice sites year-round that are staffed by volunteer law students and attorneys, including: American Indian Law Community Law: Ogden, Salt Lake, and Sugarhouse Debtor’s Law Expungement Law Family Law Medical Law Rainbow Law Street Law Veterans Law Wills for Heroes

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN-HOUSE CLINICS Students assume the role of a lawyer and represent clients under close supervision of faculty. In clinics, students learn through real-world lawyering work, intensive seminars, and regular meetings with faculty supervisors who offer support tailored for each student’s development and learning goals. Clinics include: JUSTICE LAB CLINIC Students represent community groups, non-profit organizations, and government agencies in access to justice and systemic reform projects.

INNOCENCE CLINIC Students investigate claims of innocence made by individuals convicted of serious crimes in Utah, Wyoming and Nevada.

The work is done in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center and often involves preparing a wrongful conviction case for litigation.

EXTERNSHIPS Students gain practical skills and substantive training under the supervision of licensed attorneys in the field while earning academic credit. S.J. Quinney has a wide variety of externship placements in more than a dozen different areas of law and new placements are developed every semester.
