Who teaches the certificate courses?

Our certificate courses are taught by talented working art and design professionals in their respective industries. All work within the professional fields they teach.

Who may apply for a certificate program?

Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent may apply. A bachelor’s degree is helpful but not necessary.

How long does it take to complete a certificate program?

Certificate programs vary in length. Many can be completed within an academic year.

Of course, you can take classes to fit your schedule.

I work during the day. Can I take classes in the evening?

Yes! All certificate programs are offered in the evenings to accommodate those who work 9 to 5 jobs.

When can I start a certificate program?

The Teaching Artist Certificate must be started in the fall semester. You can begin all other certificate programs any semester.

How do I apply?

Complete the downloadable application form (cs.uarts.edu/ce/certificate-programs). Submit it with any required supporting materials and a $100 fee. If you are denied acceptance to the program, you will be refunded $75. Applications are accepted year-round for all certificate programs.

Do I receive an actual certificate?

Yes. Your name, the name of your certificate program and the date of completion will be provided on the certificate.

UArts Student Photo ID Certificate students receive an official UArts photo ID for accessing UArts buildings and services. Software + Hardware Discounts Certificate students receive 80% off Adobe Creative Suite software purchased through the UArts bookstore and get discounts on hardware at the University of Pennsylvania’s Computer Connection store.

Certificate Programs All new certificate program students are required to attend an orientation session where they will meet with advisors, instructors and other new students. Students enrolled in any digital technology certificate will be required to complete up to three brief competency exams in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students enrolled in either of the Communications Design Essentials certificates will also be required to complete a competency exam in Adobe InDesign. Results will be used to determine appropriate Adobe courses based on individual skill level. If results indicate sufficient proficiency, the student will not need to enroll in Adobe software courses.

The certificate programs develop skills through sequential coursework. Please refer to specific course descriptions for a listing of prerequisites. The grids that follow take a closer look at the requirements for each certificate program and the reasons why you should participate.

Why You Should Participate in the Teaching Artist Certificate: • You are a proficient visual or performing artist and you want to share your knowledge in classroom and community settings as an arts educator, but do not wish to be a full-time teacher.

• You are a recent BFA or MFA recipient seeking to expand your pedagogical knowledge of arts education without pursuing a full-time degree. (Not required but preferred.)

Digital Technology Adobe Creative Suite Overview

Adobe Flash Weekend Workshop

Even if you have little to no background in Adobe’s suite of products, this course will teach you the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print set-up, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web.

This workshop shows you how rich media and animation created with Flash can effectively improve websites and web-based applications.

Flash continues to be integrated into numerous websites in banners, graphics, ads and animations as well as complex navigation systems and media players. You will learn the Flash interface, files, tools and techniques including creating objects, animating them and using symbols and libraries to simplify construction. Other topics explored include ActionScript, application layouts, customization and techniques for integrating your Flash movie with other web applications and sites.

Adobe Dreamweaver Discover the features and tools of Adobe Dreamweaver in order to design and build professional-quality websites. You will also be introduced to HTML and CSS. Adobe Illustrator Workshop Adobe Illustrator has some real strengths when it comes to designing web layouts. Moving and resizing elements on the canvas is much faster and more intuitive, and this helps make the process more fluid. Illustrator is the industry standard for creating vector-based graphics such as logos and typography. It is also a rich supporting tool in creating page layouts prior to starting design. This workshop focuses on a practical overview of Adobe Illustrator’s interface, workspace, tools and techniques. It will prepare you by providing the skills to create website layouts, graphics, icons and typographical graphics that add distinction and professionalism to any website or user interface.

Adobe InDesign Workshop

Adobe Photoshop Advanced

Adobe’s page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable – brochures, ads, posters, billboards and more – using text, images and illustrations.

Adobe’s answer to Quark works seamlessly with images from Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat (all manufactured by Adobe). Print output is the student’s responsibility.

Explore advanced techniques while focusing on the design process and professional production techniques Adobe Photoshop uses to achieve the most effective visual results. Ideal for those eager to continue exploring Photoshop, working with advanced layer techniques, gaining an understanding of how to use curves for image enhancement and learning to sharpen images for output. Explore several advanced Photoshop techniques, including seamless compositing and advanced layering techniques, portrait retouching, tool and palette customization and creative special effects for print, screen and the web. Group critiques are also included. Print output is the student’s responsibility; the University’s Imaging Lab is available for output. A FreedomPay card is required for use of Imaging Lab services.

Adobe Photoshop Explore Photoshop through hands-on exercises focused on its use as a tool for web design.

The course starts with an introduction to the Photoshop interface and tools and the types of files that are used for web graphics. The course continues as you learn how to use layers, effects, text, filters and image optimization tools for the web. Once you gain familiarity with the tools of Photoshop you will be able to use those skills to create website templates, rich graphics and web page elements such as content boxes and buttons.

Capstone Projects Communication Design Certificate For Communication Design Certificate enrollees only, this course focuses on expanding your design skills and refining your problem-solving abilities through advanced application of the design process. You will be expected to manage a project from concept to final presentation, including creating a logo, brochure and package design for a real-world client of your selection.

You must arrive at the first class session having identified a client for your Capstone Project. This course concludes with a formal presentation to a panel of instructors and students. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all prerequisite classes of the Communication Design Certificate (formerly Print Design Certificate) is mandatory.

Five-Minute Documentary Video

This course will build and expand on the design principles introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will learn to apply these principles and elements of design to develop thoughtful user interface, user experience and information architecture patterns for a website. Design topics include usability, action-driven design, typography for web, client management and color theory. You will learn to analyze how users interact with websites, ads and applications and how to apply design in order to influence those interactions. This course focuses entirely on design, and you will use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator exclusively to design and refine a series of web projects. This course culminates in a complete design for your portfolio website. Prerequisite: Foundations of Web Design + Development, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or equivalent experience.

This course teaches the skills necessary to bring an idea to life through moving image and sound. Focusing on the documentary form, the class introduces all stages of pre-production, production and post-production as well as the basic concepts and skills of storyboarding, camera operation, composition, lighting, sound recording and editing techniques.

Through in-class screenings, discussions, assigned exercises and a final project, explore the fundamentals of visual storytelling and experiment with the nonfiction form. Photography Adobe Lightroom – Shoot + Edit Workshop This two-day photo workshop focused on shooting and editing demonstrates the complete photographic process. The instructor will work with the group while shooting, answer questions, help with settings and equipment issues and offer tips on composition, perspective, exposure and lighting. On the first day you will meet in a computer lab for a focused introduction to Adobe Lightroom.

After a short lunch break, spend the afternoon capturing images in some of Philadelphia’s scenic neighborhoods. Day one concludes back in the lab for critique, review and prep for Sunday. Day two has you meeting on location and spending a few hours shooting before an afternoon of Lightroom, editing photos and discovering advanced features to enhance workflow. Black + White Film Photography Embrace the fundamentals of film photography and explore the expressive qualities of black and white fine art photography. This course is an exploration of the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn skills needed to capture images, including proper exposure settings for aperture, shutter speed, metering, color and light balance with an emphasis on developing strong composition, lighting and manual techniques. Night + Low Light Photography This course provides the technical background necessary for versatile shooting in lowlight environments. Art + Design Capstone Project Portfolio Development Certificate This independent study serves as the culminating experience for students in the Portfolio Development Certificate. During the Capstone course, you will create a coherent and cohesive body of work suitable for art school/ graduate school applications and/or exhibition.

You will also produce an artist’s resume, artist statement and biography during this course.

An advisor will guide you through your work and meet with you throughout the semester for critiques. At the conclusion of the Capstone course, you will exhibit your work publicly in the Continuing Studies Gallery located on the University’s campus. Drawing The fundamental aspects of drawing are explored as you aim to develop sensitivity to the formal elements of line, value, shape, texture and space, working individually and in concert. Draw from direct observation and invented images. Analyze and improve composition techniques and methods.

Fundamentals of Design Receive a strong broad-based foundation in the visual arts through instruction in drawing, painting and design in a studio setting. This course emphasizes the core fundamentals of 2-D design as the building blocks of visual literacy and requires you to look at how artists throughout history have used 2-D elements to further the boundaries of artistic expression.

Through lectures and hands-on assignments, gain a working knowledge of concepts and the vocabulary needed to facilitate your understanding of visual organization. Mixed Media Watercolor Learn a variety of traditional and contemporary watercolor techniques while developing a unique and individual direction in your work.

The overall goal of the course is to nurture and develop independent creative thinking, as well as a dynamic artistic style. If you’re interested in learning the skills and techniques of screen printing in a fine art context, this course approaches screen printing as a mode of expression and concentrates on techniques and experimentation. All aspects of screen printing techniques are covered, from image generation issues and screen preparation, to the use of screen printing as a creative medium.

Develop a portfolio of prints that emphasizes your exploration of personal content while employing advanced techniques and related processes.

To work on the wheel is to balance the artists’ creativity with the plasticity of the clay. Focusing on the design, formation and alteration of the functional object, this class uses the potter’s wheel to produce unique tableware, cups with pulled handles, saucers, bowls, plates and platters. This course explores the history and philosophy of various learning theories as the precursors to present-day classroom practices. Theoretical models from pre-20th century through current brain-based research are examined in relation to the teaching of the arts. This course focuses on the practical and business skills needed to support and sustain a working professional teaching artist. It addresses specific demands outside of working in the studio and making art. In addition to examining current trends and transitions in the field, students develop traditional presentation materials, which are central when applying for residencies. This includes writing artist statements and cover letters, shooting digital images and other variables of a presentation packet. Through lectures, student research projects, trips to venues and class discussions, students examine best practices for grants and residencies, taxes, contracts, record keeping, and basic dos and don’ts. Guest speakers from the local arts community as well as master teaching artists are scheduled to discuss different aspects of the profession. Prerequisite: Foundations of Learning Theory.

Writing Creative Writing

Hybrid Course

This course focuses on the craft and commercial value of both fiction and nonfiction. Through a workshop format, explore plot structure, character development, effective dialogue, voice and point of view. You will benefit from energetic class discussions, written critiques and conferences with the instructor.

Effective Copywriting for Marketing + Interactive Campaigns Writing solid copy is essential for creating effective marketing. Learn the techniques necessary to concept and write all forms of marketing materials. Create print ads, broadcast scripts and billboards along with media such as websites, online advertising and blogs.

Whether you’re a graphic designer, marketing professional or copywriting beginner, put your verbal skills to work through various writing and conceptualizing exercises. By the end of the course, you will have completed several pieces of a marketing campaign to start building a portfolio.

Each week the award-winning NPR radio show This American Life explores a theme through the mostly true first-person stories of everyday people. This course guides you in writing creative nonfiction essays of your own. In addition to examining episodes of This American Life, podcasts of The Moth are also explored (free podcasts are available online).

You will complete reading assignments and write bi-weekly responses, as well as produce creative essays. Whether writing humor, narrative, personal essay or any combination of the three, generate new pieces of work and have your writing workshopped by the instructor and other students. Leave the class with at least two finished essays.

Note: This is a Hybrid class that meets in a classroom for a minimal amount of time. The majority of your work is performed online (instructional videos, writing assignments, listening to podcasts, etc.) A comprehensive schedule of in-class meetings may be obtained by reviewing the course syllabus online. REGISTRATION We accept registration by fax, by mail, in person or online at cs.uarts.edu/ce. We do not accept registration over the telephone. To register, you must submit the completed registration form with payment in full.

Payment may be made in the form of a check or money order payable to: The University of the Arts or by credit card – American Express, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The University reserves the right to deny registration to any student based upon the student’s prior behavior or actions in a previous class, program or workshop at the University.

Additionally, any current student may be dismissed from his/her class and the program if found to be disruptive or behaving inappropriately in class or on the University campus. Students dismissed from any UArts Continuing Studies program will be denied admission to future terms and programs.

Students in the Division of Continuing Studies are expected to adhere to a Student Code of Conduct available on our website.

Courses are available for credit and non-credit.

Fees Course fees vary by class and are applied to the specific operational costs incurred by activities in certain classes, studios or labs. Payment of fees mentioned in course descriptions is required at the time of registration and is nonrefundable. Students may need to purchase other materials at their own expense in addition to those provided; supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes.

REFUND POLICY All refunds are less nonrefundable deposits and fees and are calculated as follows: Classes (5 or more sessions) • 100% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal five business days prior to the first class • 80% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal fewer than five business days prior to the first class • 50% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal between the first and second class • 0% refund after the scheduled meeting of the second class Weekend Workshops • 100% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal five business days prior to the workshop • 0% refund for withdrawal within fewer than five business days prior to the workshop Course fees are nonrefundable. All withdrawals must be submitted in writing sent via email to cs@uarts.edu.

The date the request is received in writing is the date used to calculate the refund amount. Please allow up to 10 business days for processing.

Note: It is not our policy to transfer registration from one course to another or one semester to another.

Requests of this nature will be processed as a withdrawal, subject to the refund policy above.

COURSE CANCELLATION The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund.

TUITION DISCOUNTS Discounts must be calculated and reflected in payment at the time of registration; no refunds will be issued retroactively to correct overpayment.

Alumni Graduates of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia College of Art and Design, Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and recipients of Continuing Education Certificates (excluding the Essentials certificates) are entitled to a 25% discount on tuition only. The discount is an increase from 10% to enhance benefits for alumni and to encourage them to take advantage of the University’s rich variety of continuing education and professional development opportunities.

Note: Alumni discounts are only recognized with online registration if you have previously registered online for a class using an alumni discount.

SUPPLIES Supplies are the responsibility of the student. Supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes and can be accessed by selecting the Syllabus link on the individual course page.

FreedomPay Cash, check and credit cards are not accepted through the University’s departmental resale programs. Materials such as metals, clay and various tools must be purchased with a FreedomPay card. Students wishing to use the University’s Imaging Lab for print output should likewise get a FreedomPay card. You can activate an account directly with FreedomPay and fund it with cash, electronic bank account withdrawal, credit or debit card. Visit the FreedomPay website at freedompay.com or call 1.888.495.0222 for more information. Students are encouraged to contact FreedomPay as soon as possible to secure a card. Processing time for a FreedomPay card may take as long as 10 business days.

University Libraries Continuing Education students may use the library facilities (Albert M. Greenfield Library, Music Library and Visual Resources Collection) but do not have borrowing privileges. Imaging Labs provide UArts students, CE students, faculty and staff with highly personalized customer service in an all-digital workshop. ATTENDANCE All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of “F” for a course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal.

ONLINE + HYBRID COURSES Online and hybrid courses have the same learning objectives and use the same faculty and curriculum as our traditional “live” courses, with the added benefit of convenience. Participants have 24/7 access to course materials and can work at their own pace any time of day. Distance education is not for everyone.

Students wishing to enroll in online and hybrid courses must meet the following minimum requirements: • Access to a computer with a web browser, Microsoft Office or equivalent and Adobe Acrobat Reader • High-speed Internet access • Comfort working on computers, including saving, deleting and moving files • Ability to install software, as needed Students in online and hybrid courses are required to participate in weekly discussions and complete all projects and assignments indicated in the syllabus.

Note: Students in online and hybrid courses will receive an invitation to join the online classroom one week prior to the start of class. Students must include a valid email address with their registration.

Continuing Education offers courses for Continuing Education Credit. Courses in this program are indicated with a “CE” prefix. Courses for credit have a “C” suffix, and courses for non-credit have an “N” suffix.

University of the Arts Continuing Studies courses provide knowledge and essential skills in specific fields and are taught by highly qualified faculty with in-depth experience in their subject areas. Continuing Studies courses at the University of the Arts are applicable to degree programs at the University. Credit is awarded based on a review of the student’s Continuing Studies transcript.

Obtaining Grades Beginning Fall semester 2012, Continuing Education students may obtain their final course grades online through WebAdvisor | MyUArts Record.

The University Registrar produces transcripts for all graduate and undergraduate programs, Continuing Education, Professional Institute for Educators and non-matriculated coursework. In order to process a transcript request, the student’s account must be in good financial standing. An official transcript may be requested at uarts.edu/academics/registrar#Transcript.

Incomplete grades require prior approval of the instructor and the Dean of the College. A “Request for Grade of Incomplete” form, signed by the Dean, must be submitted to the office of the Registrar for each “I” grade assigned. Forms are available for download in the forms section at registrar.uarts.edu.
