W E LC O M E TO S U R R E Y I hope you’re starting to feel settled in your new routine and have been enjoying exploring campus. I’m Emma, your Chief Student Officer. I’m excited to be one of the many “welcomes” you’ll receive this Welcome Week! My role is all about making sure you have the best experience possible while studying at Surrey by working directly with our fantastic support teams. Helping you settle in is one of our key priorities. You may be feeling a mix of nerves and excitement – which is completely normal. I was the first of my family to go to University and I remember that feeling well. But it helps to remember that right now, you’re surrounded by people in the same situation. You’re all somewhere new, building a new life at Surrey. So, don’t be afraid to reach out. Whether that’s to flat mates, students on your course or our support services (more about those on pages 16-17). We’re all part of a friendly, inclusive community at Surrey. Most importantly, I hope you have a brilliant Welcome Week! It’s a great opportunity to discover our beautiful campus, meet new people and try something new. And if it is all feeling overwhelming right now that is fine too. Take it at your own speed - opportunities to get involved continue throughout the year and settling in looks different for everyone.
TOP TIPS! There are many opportunities to get involved in at Surrey. Check out our content and recommendations to help you prepare for your course and your time at university.
All the best, Emma Rowsell Chief Student Officer

L I V I N G AT U N I V E R S I T Y: YO U R Q U E ST I O N S ANSWERED My family have left, and I don’t know anyone, what do I do next?
There are lots of events, lectures and other things I want to attend. How do I organise my time?
12
It is natural to feel a little worried on your first night. One of the first steps is to go to the kitchen and meet your flatmates. Remember, most people will be in the same position as you, and although it may be a little awkward at first, try and get to know them by asking some questions. Where are they from? What are they studying? What interests do they have?
One of the best things you can do to help with organising your time is to buy a diary or use the calendar app in your phone. Getting into the habit of scheduling on a Sunday before your week starts will help you to feel calmer and in control of your time. First, start by filling in your lectures and then look at any societies and events you would like to attend. It is important to include the locations of these places too so you can quickly check back and know where you are going.
I am cooking for the first time. Any tips as to how I get started?
I have not lived in a flat share before; what do I need to know?
Most students start off with a couple of dishes that are familiar to them when they start university such as bolognese, fajitas, curries, or rice dishes. We recommend having a look at some recipes online or buying a student recipe book. Making a list of the foods you like to eat and meal planning prior to going shopping is a great way to stay focused in the supermarket and to stop you from over-buying.
When you are living with others, you need to think about keeping shared spaces clean. There is usually limited space to cook and chill so it is important to keep on top of your dishes, washing things up after you have finished your food. Only using/eating what is yours and remembering you need to work together to keep the place clean. Keep it light-hearted, we know how annoying a messy space can get. Some flats are single sex or designated quiet flats. Please respect these rules. To find the Living in Halls Guide, with tips on making Surrey your home, and the conditions of your residence, visit: my.surrey.ac.uk/accommodation
How do I deal with difficult flatmates?
It is not always plain sailing when you are living with a range of people that all have their own habits and different ways of living. If you are having a problem, the first thing to do is to have an open conversation. It is best to have it in person, but messaging can work too. Aim to approach the conversation with kindness, always be polite and explain what has happened and how it has made you feel. If the person is not responding in a nice way and is continuing to cause problems, you can get help from the Communities team. For more information, visit: my.surrey.ac.uk/accommodation/ living-halls-residence/welfare-andsupport
How do I feel better with freshers’ flu?
Getting what is known as ‘freshers’ flu’ is common in your first couple of weeks of university. It refers to a wave of colds and other bugs that spread quickly through the student population at the beginning of a new academic year. Let your friends and family know you are unwell so they can check in with you. Make sure you are drinking enough and spending time resting. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, proteins and carbs. If you need over-thecounter medicines, go to your local pharmacy.
How do I meet new people?
Starting a conversation with a new person can be anxiety-inducing for some people. It is key to remember that everyone shares the same emotions, and most people will respond positively when you reach out and are open and friendly. You could try asking your course mates to go for a coffee after class or organise study sessions to help each other with assignments.
T H E B I G W E L C O M E 2 6 / M Y. S U R R E Y. A C . U K
I’m feeling lonely; how do I deal with homesickness?
Sometimes you can be surrounded by people but still feel lonely and that is okay. Not everyone will have the same interests as you. Having a list of people that you know and can reach out to is a good place to start. Arranging a catch up with your friends from home and with your family can help to talk through those feelings. Check out the Union’s long list of student societies (see pages 22-23) and our range of welcome events to connect with others or just take your mind off things. You could also consider becoming a course representative, joining Team Surrey or volunteering through the Students’ Union.
Find fun events, societies and clubs on the Students’ Union website: surreyunion.org
There are three highly-recommended vaccines that all new students should get before starting university: What vaccinations do I need to have?
•
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
•
Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
•
Meningococcal ACWY
Contact your doctor before you arrive or within two weeks of starting university to keep up to date.
Where can I access sexual health support?
Buryfields Clinic offers free and confidential sexual health services and is only a 15-minute walk from the Stag Hill campus. Free and confidential testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI) is widely available for all students here. Alternatively, free self-test kits can be delivered to your address. You can find more information about sexual health support at my.surrey.ac.uk/wellbeing

We are here for you. The University offers a range of pastoral services to ensure you feel well and supported throughout your time here. We can also signpost you to external clinical services to help you get the support you need, when you need it.
or me, moving to another country didn’t feel like an Instagram story. It felt like my soul was going through migration, leaving behind everything I knew. In the rearview mirror, I could see my group of friends spread across the country, my beautiful noisy family, my sick dad, and basically an entire eco-system that I created over a lifetime. I wasn’t even sure if I was going or not, there is always this absolute uncertainty. 5th September Visa appointment, 11th September Visa issued, 13th September flight, and 14th September I was in London, in a country with different laws, different economy, different culture, different food, entirely different weather (it was night at 4 pm a couple of months ago and now the day refuses to end until 10:30 PM), and a million different people from hundreds of different countries. We were all going through the same thing, all feeling like fish out of water, and all trying to understand what just happened. I managed to get to Surrey for Freshers’ Week and I was more anxious than I expected. Worried about fitting in, concerned about sharing accommodation with so many different people, and awfully confused about all the different buildings, AC, AD, BB, BC, and whatnot. It’s fair to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the number of activities planned for new students. There were departmental meet and greets, speed-friending events, karaoke nights, open-mics, campus tours, parties every night, color run, and these are just the things I remember from off the top of my head! It was amazing, but in some ways, it felt too much. You feel like you are missing out on things but that’s the point. It’s impossible to do everything and this is just a taster of your Surrey-Life. Try new things, find new hobbies! Before I came to Surrey, I was worried if I had chosen the right course, so I reached out to different program leads who were kind enough to give me their time. I discussed my aspirations, my skillset, my fears, and my weaknesses with them, they all guided me kindly and patiently, and by the end of the first two weeks, I was confident and comfortable in my own degree program. I wondered whether I’d make friends and have people to talk to when I was feeling lonely. But as soon as you step out of your room, there are places to get support, like the Centre for Wellbeing, Students’ Union, Support Zone, Talk Together and Nightline. Cherry on top; I was able to meet a diverse range of people through societies, the student equality network and events for international students. Now I have friends from all across the world! I settled in easily, and so will you. Just be yourself like I did and remember not to stress too much. We’re not at University forever so fear no judgement and participate in everything you want to! It was this approach that led to me being elected your next VP Voice. So, if any of my story resonated with you, or you just want to talk, please get in touch!

One of the things we love about Surrey is how close it is to Guildford’s town centre and Surrey Hills. Check out some of the easy, sustainable ways you can get around.
By bus
Stagecoach buses run through both Stag Hill and Manor Park campuses and across town.
Day bus: Route 1 The main bus route is specially designed to provide quick and easy links between Stag Hill, Manor Park, Guildford rail station and Guildford town centre. Route 1 > Guildford, Stag Hill campus, Manor Park campus and Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Night bus: Route N1
Students save 25% on Bundles & Passes
During term time, Stagecoach run a night bus service (N1) between midnight and 5am to help you get home from a night out late study session. A flat fare of £3 applies, unless you have a NightRider ticket or other student bus pass. It follows the same route as the daytime Route 1 service, including from all Stag Hill and Manor Park bus stops. To get started and plan your route, download the Stagecoach app.
By train Guildford Railway Station is just 10 minutes away from Stag Hill campus, making travel by train a convenient way to get to Surrey or even have a day trip to London – it’s just 32 minutes to London Waterloo!

When people ask where your outfit is from, you love telling them it’s from a charity shop! Keep going with your sustainable fashion by visiting the Community Hub on campus to find your next second-hand gem. Fallen out of love with an item? Donate your clean clothes and household items to our British Heart Foundation and Phyllis Tuckwell charity bins. Or if you want to try a new style, check out Surrey’s monthly clothes swap events to discover your new vibe.
You’re a true foodie – always willing to give a new recipe a go! You’re the go to person for group meals and restaurant recommendations. Getting a coffee on campus? Remember to bring a reuseable cup or use our Cauli Cup scheme. Why not experiment with more plant based options in your diet – whether it’s an oat milk for your coffee or more beans and pulses to improve your environmental impact. Look out for Vegan and Vegetarian options on campus with plenty of ingredients at the Co-op. If you want to try something new, pop along to the University’s Community Garden and Beehives to grow your own food and produce honey.
