Mathematics permeates virtually every intellectual discipline. Carl Friedrich Gauss called mathematics the “queen of the sciences” and indeed, it forms an integral part of scientific thought and is a necessary component of contemporary advances in all scientific fields.
It’s a great time to be a mathematician and a data scientist! The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2022 reports the median salary for data scientists as $100,910 and $96,280 for mathematicians and statisticians. BLS also ranked data scientist #6 and statistician #9 on the list of fastest growing occupations between 2021-31. This means you can anticipate job security and a great salary by majoring in Mathematics and choosing any of our concentrations.
The Mathematics major at the University of St. Francis exposes students to various undergraduate topics while teaching the analytical skills necessary to continue the lifelong learning and application of mathematics. Dedicated faculty members create learning opportunities where students can engage in research training workshops, undergraduate summer research, conferences, STEM related activities and events, organizing educational experiences for the community and more. Faculty members work closely with students to cultivate and nurture students’ personal interests, preparing them for fulfilling careers after graduation.
My undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Education have helped to shape me as a mathematics teacher. I am grateful for the challenges, support and opportunities I received to explore and learn more about the field of mathematics. I had already fallen in love with mathematics, but discovered more at USF and that made it even more important to me. I hope to inspire and challenge my own students just like the professors at St. Francis have inspired and challenged me!

Mathematics finds application in diverse fields such as economics, business, science, social science, art and education. There are a variety of careers, including data science, finance, actuarial science, operations research, biomathematics, computer science, cryptography, education, statistics and more. CareerCast.com’s 2021 “Jobs Rated” report includes several of these in their top ten jobs, including: data scientist (#1), statistician (#3), mathematician (#5), operations research analyst (#7), and actuary (#9). Having a math degree may also help you get into graduate school for medicine, law or business. According to the Law School Admissions Council, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Profile of GMAT Candidates, math majors score the highest on LSAT, MCAT and GMAT entrance exams.
Through summer research grants and the STEM club, University of St. Francis mathematics students have the opportunity to conduct research, attend conferences, and give presentations of their research. They coordinate STEM and Math Night activities for local K-12 schools and their families, and participate in extracurricular activities including trips to Argonne, Fermilab, and Chicagoland museums such as the Museum of Science and Industry. Mathematics students can also participate in the Intercollegiate Biomathematics Alliance, where they conduct current biomathematics research with a team and present their work at an international symposium.
