Carl Friedrich Gauss called mathematics the “queen of the sciences” and indeed, it forms an integral part of scientific thought and is a necessary component of contemporary advances in all scientific fields. Mathematics majors tend to be analytical, detail-oriented problem solvers. It’s a great time to be a mathematician and the career outlook is favorable! CareerCast.com’s “Jobs Rated” report included the following professions in their latest “Best Jobs” listing: data scientist (#1), statistician (#3), mathematician (#5), operations research analyst (#7) and actuary (#9). The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median salary for mathematicians and statisticians as $84,760 with a projected 33 percent increase in employment until 2026.
