USF NEWS UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS INAUGURATES 10TH PRESIDENT, DR. RYAN C. HENDRICKSON USF formally inaugurated Dr. Ryan C. Hendrickson as the institution’s 10th president during a ceremony on October 3 in the Pat Sullivan Center. The academic procession and inauguration activities gathered civic and religious leaders, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university to celebrate the historic occasion. The inauguration featured an academic procession, formal greetings from representatives of the university and community, and Dr. Hendrickson’s inaugural address.

“The inauguration of a president is both a celebration of leadership and a reaffirmation of the university’s mission,” said Lisa Sampalis, Vice President for University Advancement. “Dr. Hendrickson embodies the Franciscan values that guide the University of St. Francis and brings a strong vision for advancing academic excellence, fostering community partnerships, and preparing our students to serve the world with competence and compassion.”

Honorable Terrence D’Arcy, Mayor of Joliet, called the University a “Beacon of light of Franciscan values” in his greetings during the ceremony. Sr. Jeanne Bessette, OSF, president of USF's founding congregation of the Third Order of Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, addressed Hendrickson during the ceremony, “The Joliet Franciscans stand with you as together we pledge our holiness and actions.” Shane Green, vice chair of the University of St. Francis Board of Trustees, spoke about Hendrickson, saying, “We have chosen a leader who embodies vision, scholarship, and leadership.”

After the Investiture of the President, Hendrickson gave his inaugural address, referring to the University of St. Francis as "deeply impactful." He spoke about the four core Franciscan values leading USF’s mission: respect, service, integrity, and compassion.

Hendrickson began his tenure as president on June 1 this year following a distinguished career at Eastern Illinois University. Since assuming office, he has prioritized expanding the university’s profile and strengthening its connection to the surrounding communities.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS AND THE DIOCESE OF JOLIET ANNOUNCE ADMISSION PARTNERSHIP The University of St. Francis and the Diocese of Joliet have created a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signifying their partnership to ease the pathway to a university education. The MOU creates access and opportunity for high school students in the Diocese of Joliet to enroll at the University of St. Francis. Per the MOU, graduates of Diocese-affiliated Catholic high schools (Benet Academy, Bishop McNamara Catholic School, IC Catholic Prep, Joliet Catholic Academy, Montini Catholic, Providence Catholic, and St. Francis High School) will be guaranteed admission to the University of St. Francis.

In addition, eligible students will be provided an opportunity to earn the Joliet Franciscan Scholars award of up to $3,000. These students will still be eligible for consideration in USF merit-based scholarships awarded based upon test scores, GPA, and other academic achievements up to $21,000. In addition to guaranteed admission, USF plans to host workshops and information sessions for Diocese-based school counselors, teachers, parents, and prospective students. USF will also offer campus visit days facilitating exploration and engagement with the Diocese Schools.

Admissions and enrollment support services will be available for all prospective students.

“We are so pleased with this new partnership and look forward to working with the Catholic high schools within the Joliet Diocese," USF President Ryan Hendrickson shared. "We now have a pathway that removes admission barriers and eases the pathway to enrollment at USF, which includes scholarship support.”

Said Dr. Jim Quaid, Diocese of Joliet Superintendent of Catholic Schools, “This partnership between the Diocese of Joliet and the University of St. Francis provides the students of our Catholic high schools a wonderful option. They can advance their education while staying engaged with the Catholic church in the Diocese, growing in their faith and serving our community.”

UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS CELEBRATES NATIONAL HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION WEEK In early 2023, USF earned the Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation by the U.S. Department of Education for having an undergraduate full-time equivalent student population that is comprised of at least 25% Hispanic students. The project serves USF’s more than 1,200 undergraduate students, 30% of whom are Hispanic, 40% of whom are Pell-eligible, and 64% of whom are first-generation college students.

With the designation, USF was able to apply for and was awarded Title V Developing HSIs (DHSI) funding in the form of a grant worth nearly $3M. Though the grant was recently eliminated, 90% of DHSI program costs were financed with funds from the U.S. Department of Education, and 10% were financed by USF. Recognized by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, National HSI Week was observed on September 8-14. The purpose of HSI week is to raise awareness of the role HSIs have in advancing education for Hispanic students, promoting equity for all students through inclusive learning environments, and supporting communities by developing a skilled workforce. USF was honored to participate in the recognition of HSI week as an institution devoted to advancing education and opportunities for traditionally underserved students. The campus community hosted activities on campus to raise awareness of HSI week, including participating in the Mexican Independence Day Parade in Downtown Joliet on Saturday, September 13.

USF NEWS PROFESSOR ANNA IOANES EXPLORES VIOLENCE AND BEAUTY IN NEW BOOK Anna Ioanes, associate professor of English at USF, is excited to announce the release of Painful Forms: Aesthetic Violence in American Literature and Art, 1945-2001. It is a work of literary criticism that examines five forms of portraying violence in the postwar era. Published on October 21 by the University of North Carolina Press, the book presents new and timely analysis of major figures in U.S. arts and letters.

In Painful Forms, Anna Ioanes introduces readers to the concept of aesthetic violence, a term originally coined by scholars Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit. Aesthetic violence describes the experience of trying to make sense of artworks that are in fact designed to thwart or frustrate our sense-making strategies. The book explores how aesthetic violence, a concept that originally theorized visual art, can operate in art, performance, and fiction. By defining forms of aesthetic violence in the art, performance, and literature of the long civil rights period, Ioanes shows how aesthetic experiences play a crucial but often overlooked role in social life.

The book analyzes five forms of aesthetic violence to reveal what they tell us about suffering in the U.S. in the period between World War II and the September 11th attacks–a time of reckoning with new technologies of suffering, characterized by global liberation movements and new concepts of violence as structural, systemic, or senseless. The book begins with this historical context, arguing that aesthetic violence also played an important role in shaping how people thought and spoke about the violence of the era.

Each chapter defines a form of aesthetic violence, showing how the form works across written and visual media to unsettle received narratives about suffering and make room for new ideas. Chapter one compares frame narratives in James Baldwin’s fiction to Andy Warhol’s silkscreen technique, showing how frames unsettle rhetorics of violence.

Chapter two focuses on Yoko Ono’s work as a performance artist, poet, and multimedia artist, identifying the happening–a term that emerged in the 1960s to describe performance art events–as a technique for maintaining valuable ambiguity about the meaning of violence.

Anna Ioanes is an associate professor of English in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of St. Francis, where she teaches courses in American literature, writing, and cultural theory. UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS NAMED WITH AN "OPPORTUNITY COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY"

BY THE CARNEGIE CLASSIFICATIONS USF has been classified as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classifications. Per Carnegie’s website, “Opportunity Colleges and Universities are institutions within the Student Access and Earnings Classification that can serve as models for studying how campuses foster student success. They provide higher than expected levels of access to low-income and underrepresented students, and their students experience strong earnings outcomes.’’ USF is one of 13 Illinois colleges on the list of 479 total institutions to receive this recognition in 2025.

The methodology for this newly developed classification employs multidimensional groupings of the 2025 Institutional Classification to assess student access and earnings across similar colleges and universities. THE PRINCETON REVIEW NAMES UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS ONE OF THE NATION’S BEST COLLEGES FOR 2026 The company profiles USF in the 2026 edition of its annual college guide, "The Best 391 Colleges." Only about 15% of America’s nearly 2,400 four-year colleges are included in The Princeton Review guidebook.

The company chose the colleges for the book based its surveys of 2,000 college administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings. The company also surveyed students attending colleges in the book who rated their own schools on dozens of topics and reported on their campus experiences at them.

In The Princeton Review profile on USF, the company's editors praise the school for its lab facilities, and quote from USF students they surveyed for the project who described the college as "a welcoming and friendly environment.”

The Princeton Review does not rank the 391 schools overall, but has 50 list categories. Each list names the top 25 schools in a particular category. The rankings are entirely based on company's surveys of students attending the 391 profiled schools. Surveys of 170,000 students (about 435 per school on average) were tallied for the rankings.

University of St. Francis appeared on the following ranking lists in The Best 391 Colleges: #11 for Best Science Lab Facilities and #25 for Most Active Student Government.

WALL STREET JOURNAL RANKS UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS AMONG NATION’S TOP COLLEGES FOR STUDENT FINANCIAL SUCCESS The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has recognized USF as one of the nation’s top colleges in preparing students for financial success. Unlike other rankings, WSJ’s methodology emphasizes one key measure: how well a college improves its graduates’ financial outcomes. More than any other factor, the rankings reward the salary boost that students receive compared to what they could have expected from attending another institution.

In the 2025 rankings, USF earned a #109 national ranking, placing it among the top colleges in the country. Within Illinois, USF is ranked #6 overall and is the top Catholic university in the state, followed by DePaul University (#157) and Loyola University Chicago (#230).

The WSJ also recognized USF for its impact on social mobility, ranking the university #21 nationally and #2 in Illinois, underscoring USF’s commitment to creating opportunity and economic advancement for students from all backgrounds.

“These rankings affirm that a University of St. Francis education is both transformative and valuable,” said USF President Dr. Ryan Hendrickson. “We are proud that our graduates not only leave with meaningful degrees, but also with the tools and opportunities to thrive financially and contribute to their communities.”

UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS RECOGNIZED IN 2026 U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT BEST COLLEGES RANKINGS USF has once again been recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings. In the 2026 edition, USF was ranked: #293 in National Universities, #214 in Nursing and #204 in Top Performers on Social Mobility.

These recognitions highlight USF’s strong academic programs, its commitment to advancing student opportunities, and its continued focus on excellence in higher education.

The U.S. News Best Colleges rankings evaluate nearly 1,500 institutions nationwide, using measures such as graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student outcomes, and peer assessments. The recognition affirms USF’s role as a mission-driven, student-focused university that remains dedicated to fostering both academic achievement and community impact.

The Fighting Saints’ men’s cross country team earned a spot at the NAIA National Championships down in Tallahassee, Fla in mid-November. The program advanced to nationals by claiming its sixth straight conference title and tenth in the past 11 years. Tyler Anderson was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Runner of the Year by winning the meet. He dominated the nine-team, 109-runner field with his 8K time of 25:11.4, which was over nine seconds faster than his next-closest challenger. The sophomore was also recognized three times during the season as the league’s Runner of the Week. Also advancing to nationals on the women’s side was Nikki Vollrath. She qualified as an individual after placing sixth at the conference meet.

A 50-YEAR REUNION St. Francis alums Bob Halberg and John Lechner returned to their roots when they joined the USF men’s and women’s cross country programs at their annual season-opening Fighting Saints’ Twilight Invite this past August at Channahon Community Park. It was 50 years ago this fall that Halberg, Lechner and their cross country teammates became the first St. Francis team in any sport to qualify for the NAIA National Championships, placing fourth in the nation. In honor of that historic moment, USF’s 2025 men’s team wore uniform tops that display the original Fightin’ Saints logo at this year’s NAIA National Championships.

The USF men’s cross country team (pictured on full page at right) and women’s basketball team were ranked in their respective NAIA Coaches’ Polls. The basketball team, which was undefeated (at press time) through the first six games of the season, sat at No. 18 in the poll, with the cross country team reaching No. 23.

WOMEN'S SOCCER COMPLETES HISTORIC SEASON, FLORES RECOGNIZED AS A TOP PLAYER USF’s women’s soccer team concluded its most successful season in school history this fall, advancing to the CCAC Championship match for the first time.

The Saints also amassed their most wins in program history, going 134-3. Headlining the group was Kelly Flores, who was named both the CCAC Player and Midfielder of the Year. Flores finished among the Top 15 players in four offensive categories, highlighted by both her three game-winning goals and seven assists, which tied her for third place in the league. She also tied for 11th with her 19 points and 13th with her six goals scored.

A BEW-TIFUL SEASON St. Francis sophomore kick returner Carl Bew had quite the season for the Fighting Saints’ football team, returning a school-record three kickoffs for touchdowns. That led to him earning NAIA National Special Teams Player of the Week honors on one occasion and Mid-States Football Association Midwest League accolades a total of three times.

His highlight was a school-record 100yard return with two others going for 97 yards. Each of those three plays represent the top kick returns in school history.

Prior to the game, USF men’s basketball alumni joined legendary head coach Pat Sullivan and long-time assistant Jack Hermanski for a get-together at Bruno’s Lounge near the Gentile Arena. More than 50 alumni and fans of the Saints, including President Hendrickson and his family, attended.

Our Mission

As we enter the holiday season, I remain truly grateful for the opportunity to lead the University of St. Francis. In this time of hope and renewal, the season of Advent has special relevance at USF. We of course celebrate the onset of Advent with our traditional crèche in our university quad. The idea of a Crèche and nativity scene, as many of you surely know, was created centuries ago through the innovative thinking of St. Francis to celebrate the coming of Christmas in a new way. Advent inspires excitement, anticipation, reflection, as well as the prospect for something greater to come. All of these experiences have similar relevance to us in the university community.

Since June, I have already had the chance to get to meet and speak with so many others who love our university, who frequently emphasize the impact that USF brings to our students, alumni and Joliet community. Our university must remain competitive in this challenging higher education marketplace, while always maintaining and strengthening our Catholic and Franciscan mission.

As many of you know, we initiated an academic reorganization process at USF this fall, which was indeed challenging. Throughout this process, we have reiterated that we are focused on building a USF community that serves our community today, tomorrow and in the decades ahead.

I am pleased to share that part of this process resulted in the creation of a new task force. The task force consists of three different groups of faculty, staff and administrators, all designed to strengthen USF and build the foundation for a vibrant, sustainable future — one that honors our Catholic, Franciscan heritage and positions USF for academic excellence, enrollment growth and financial vitality. The groups will assess our academic programs, our academic organizational framework and some of our internal policy regulations.

As mentioned in the previous issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit, I continue to be inspired by Pope Leo and his bridge-building ethic. He asks us to think differently and reach others in ways that we previously may not have considered. My aspiration is that this sort of framework steers and shapes our views about how we position USF to reach new audiences, while building upon our longstanding mission. This work is never done; we always welcome your input, discernment, prayers and ongoing engagement.

I am very grateful to be at the University of St. Francis, and to work with all of you as we serve our current students, but I also look to the future as we enter this new chapter in USF’s evolution.

Estimada comunidad de la USF, Al entrar en la temporada festiva, sigo muy agradecido por tener la oportunidad de dirigir la Universidad de St. Francis. En esta época de esperanza y renovación, la temporada de Adviento tiene una relevancia especial en la USF. Por supuesto, celebramos el inicio del Adviento con nuestro tradicional Nacimiento en nuestro patio universitario. La idea de una escena de Nacimiento y Belén, como muchos de ustedes saben, se creó hace siglos mediante el pensamiento innovador de San Francisco para celebrar la llegada de la Navidad de una forma original. El Adviento inspira entusiasmo, expectación, reflexión, así como la perspectiva de que algo más grande está por venir. Todas estas experiencias tienen una relevancia similar para nosotros en la comunidad universitaria.

Desde junio, ya he tenido la oportunidad de reunirme y hablar con muchas otras personas que aman a nuestra universidad, quienes a menudo enfatizan el impacto que la USF tiene para nuestros estudiantes, antiguos alumnos y la comunidad Joliet. Nuestra universidad debe seguir siendo competitiva en este desafiante mercado de la educación superior, a la vez que mantiene y fortalece siempre nuestra misión católica y franciscana.

Como se mencionó en el número anterior de Engaging Mind & Spirit, sigo inspirándome en el Papa Leo y su ética de tender puentes. Él nos pide que pensemos de forma diferente y que lleguemos a los demás de formas que antes no habíamos tenido en consideración. Mi aspiración es que este tipo de marco de trabajo oriente y dé forma a nuestras opiniones sobre cómo posicionamos a USF con objeto de llegar a nuevos públicos, a la vez que hacemos avanzar nuestra misión a largo plazo. 150 Days of Impact Since the beginning of his tenure as the University of St. Francis’s 10th president, Dr. Ryan Hendrickson has already created an impactful presence within USF and the community. As Dr. Hendrickson is new to the Joliet area, he has spent an incredible amount of time immersing himself in the local community and building relationships with those who love and support Joliet’s University. To expand the USF profile in Joliet and beyond, Dr. Hendrickson has created a presence in local media and social media.

This community presence, combined with his on-campus presence, has created a collaborative environment that facilitates fruitful partnerships and growth for USF. In the University’s student-led publication, The Encounter, Dr. Hendrickson is quoted regarding the enhancement of the university’s profile, Dr. Hendrickson, Joliet City Councilman Cesar Cardenas, and USF Mascot Bernie at the Community Meet and Greet event held at Sought Out Grounds (now called Social Butterfly Coffee) in Downtown Joliet.

“It helps enrollment, it helps fundraising, it helps community relations. There are so many benefits to increasing our profile.” He continued, “We have an excellent university that people love and have wonderful experiences in.

We need more people to know about the University of St. Francis.”

To expand the profile, Dr. Hendrickson has both hosted and attended several events on campus and in the Joliet area.

This summer has been packed with events to introduce Dr. Hendrickson to the local community. In July, USF hosted a meet and greet at Sought Out Grounds (recently renamed Social Butterfly Coffee), welcoming the Joliet community and offering the opportunity to connect with Dr. Hendrickson.

In August, the University of St. Francis sponsored a Joliet Slammers game at the stadium in downtown Joliet. This was an opportunity for USF students, staff, faculty, and the community to gather together and support a long-time USF partner.

Dr. Hendrickson has also been a guest on 1340 WJOL and 1360 WCSJ. He has taken many opportunities to speak in the local community, including at Chamber events and Rotary meetings.

Dr. Hendrickson welcomed legendary basketball coach Pat Sullivan and his wife, Peg, to campus to visit with him and former player Shane Green, who is now serving as vice chair of USF's Board of Trustees.

The University of St. Francis Board of Trustees officially installed Dr. Hendrickson as USF’s 10th president on October 3, 2025 His focus on the University’s profile has been supplemented by the development of a strong, personal on-campus presence. This presence has been welcomed by the campus community and has created many opportunities for dialogue with students and staff about upcoming changes and developments within the university.

HOMECOMING The Saints community gathered on September 27 for USF's annual Homecoming & Reunion tailgate at Joliet Memorial Stadium. Alumni, students, families, and friends celebrated with plenty of Saint spirit and the stadium was buzzing with energy as alumni reconnected with old friends and shared stories from their time at USF. Students and families joined in on the fun with yard games, photo ops, and activities for all ages. The highlight, as always, was cheering on the Fighting Saints together, with a crowd full of brown and gold pride. Events like this showcase what makes USF special—the strong sense of community that brings people together year after year. Thanks to everyone who helped make Homecoming 2025 one to remember!

& REUNIONS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI DINNER CELEBRATES SAINTS In the spirit of Homecoming, the Distinguished Alumni Dinner was held on Thursday, October 9 to honor distinguished alumni from each college and to celebrate honored-year reunions. Recognized for their successes, these alumni continue to make the University of St. Francis proud.

Elizabeth Talaga '19 was presented with the Rising Star Award by Dr. Elizabeth McDermott, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

McDermott also presented Mary Kay Blake '70 with the College of Arts & Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award. Ian Vanderwoude '11, '22 was presented with the College of Business & Health Administration Distinguished Alumni Award by Dr. Shannon Brown, COBHA dean, and Dr. Saundra Russell Smith '18 was presented with the College of Education Distinguished Alumni Award by Dr. John Gambro, COE dean.

Elizabeth Davidson, '76, DNP, RN received the Leach College of

Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award from USF's provost, Dr. Beth Roth, who stood in for Dr. Yeijin Yeom, LCON dean. Finally, Steve Randich '79 was presented with the Presidential Alumni Award by Dr. Ryan C. Hendrickson, USF president. Congratulations to our Saints for their incredible achievements.

Also recognized at the Distinguished Alumni Dinner were Saints celebrating honored year reunions, including the classes of 2020, 2015 and 2000. Members of the Class of 1975 celebrated their 50th reunion and were inducted into the USF Assisian Club—a distinct honor bestowed upon alumni in their 50th reunion year. The Assisian Club induction is a long-time USF tradition, and the university was honored to recognize the Class of 1975 for continuing to stay so actively involved over the years. CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS Dr. Hendrickson greeted USF students from the Czech Republic on their first day of activities at the Joliet campus during a summer visit. The Czech students are currently enrolled in USF's MBA program. Students attended class with Dr. Steve Morrissette all week, then Dr. Rich Vaughan hosted the group for a full day of activities in Chicago. USF has been offering a MBA program in the Czech Republic for over 10 years.

This year’s First-Year Transition program welcomed over 25 students to campus.

This program serves as support to incoming students by providing early opportunities to engage with others, complete coursework, and get to know the campus to aid in a smooth transition to college.

Drs. Dan Schwert and Scott Gruenbaum presented a series of chemistry and physics demos for the students in the First-Year Transition program.

Dr. G performed the "Rainbow Connection" demonstration, showcasing a rainbow spectrum of acid-base indicators, and illustrated chemiluminescence with luminol.

A celebration was held on campus during National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week to celebrte the university's HSI status.

T-shirts were given away on the Quad.

Several students celebrated Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week by exploring their creativity and Spanish language skills with chalk drawings outside the Motherhouse.

A new peer mentor program called FYI Leaders (First-Year Initiative Leaders) has been established on campus. FYI Leaders are each assigned to a First-Year Seminar class, which they attend at least once a week to connect with students and offer support and practical tips for success. They also plan engaging weekly activities for the first-year students to attend outside of class to make connections with each other and other resources/clubs on campus, including a class activity of making tie-dye shirts.

Students taught by Dr. Beth McDermott and Dr. Cathy Nelson teamed up for a Catholic, Franciscan "walk" during Saints Francis and Clare Week. All students in the first-year seminar program participated in the event, which was designed in collaboration with University Ministry.

Faculty member Dr. Katie Chamberlain and former biology majors Brianna Quintero '24 and Vetona Sarpong '24 had their research published in the peer-reviewed journal, BIOS. Appearing in the August 2025 issue, their paper was titled: "Comparison of epidermis characteristics as a result of different mask type usage in young adults." This publication was the culmination of a USF 2022 SURE project and an independent study project that was funded by a grant from the Tri-Beta biological honor society.

The project final defense presentation for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students took place Wednesday, October 8 at St. Clare Campus. Six students proudly presented their evidence-based scholarly initiatives meant to guide improvements in practice and outcomes of care. For the DNP Faculty and the DNP Project Teams, the event is truly a day to celebrate the dedication and accomplishments of the DNP students.

One of USF's current radiation therapy students, Paula Ocampo, was recently acknowledged and nominated by one of the patients at Endeavor NorthShore Evanston Hospital for a "Service Value Award." The patient also nominated two other USF alums...

Ocampo's clinical supervisor, Kevin Le '18, AND her clinical instructor, Pauline Areno '22.

It's unusual for patients to acknowledge students in this way. USF is proud to know these alumni have been recognized by members of the community for living out the value of service in their daily lives.

Creating Legacy With The Gift of Scholarship At the University of St. Francis, every endowed scholarship tells a story—a story of generosity, gratitude, and belief in the transformative power of education. These scholarships are more than financial awards; they are living legacies that connect generations of Saints, past and future.

Each year, donors who have chosen to establish endowed scholarships make it possible for students to pursue their degrees with fewer financial burdens and greater focus on their studies, service, and calling. The impact is felt far beyond the classroom. For many students, an endowed scholarship is the difference between wondering if they can attend college and discovering how far they can go once they’re here.

An endowed scholarship is designed to last forever. The initial gift is invested, and only the earnings are used to fund awards—ensuring that the donor’s generosity continues year after year. It’s a permanent reflection of the values, faith, and priorities that define the USF community.

For some donors, the inspiration comes from gratitude for their own college experiences or a desire to honor a loved one. For others, it’s a way to strengthen an academic program or support students pursuing a particular field or vocation. Whatever the motivation, the outcome is always the same: a ripple effect of opportunity that touches countless lives.

Each fall, the university celebrates this connection at the annual Scholarship Orientation. This event gives students an opportunity to learn more about the gift that has been shared with them, and to thank donors in a meaningful and personal way. Students are celebrated for their accomplishment of being awarded an endowed scholarship and share the impact their scholarships have on their education and futures.

To deepen the understanding of their impact, select scholarship recipients have the opportunity each year to connect personally with their donors.

These meaningful conversations allow donors to share the stories behind their generosity and give students a chance to express their gratitude and discuss their goals for the future. Over time, these connections have strengthened the endowed scholarship program and inspired many students to one day give back, continuing the legacy of generosity that defines the University of St. Francis.

As higher education continues to evolve, the enduring strength of endowed scholarships reminds us that while times change, the mission remains steadfast: Students prepare to thank donors at Scholarship Orientation. to continue the tradition of a Franciscan education and encourage our students to lead with respect, service, integrity, and compassion.
