2021-22 ISSUE 2

2020-2021 Annual Report Issue

FROM THE PRESIDENT For it is in giving that we receive… Dear Members of the USF Family, Welcome to the latest issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit magazine! This publication is one way the University of St. Francis strives to remain connected to you—our alumni, our friends, our parents, our employees and our supporters—in short, our USF family. We continue hope that this issue continues to find you safe and healthy—even in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as its Delta and Omicron variants. Indeed, although I would never have imagined continuing to do so at this point, I want to begin, yet again, by thanking our “on-campus community members”—students, faculty, staff and partners—for everything that they have done to ensure that our continued on-campus learning has been as safe and successful as it has. As “Saints United,” we continue to wear masks, maintain physical distancing, practice good hand hygiene, and self-screen daily… and the respect and compassion that we’re showing for each other through these actions continues to be effective! That said, I have to tell you that this particular issue—with its focus on philanthropy—could not only be more timely (given the many societal challenges we face), but also more relevant to our mission than ever before. After all, if we are to prepare women and men to contribute to the world through service and leadership, we require the support of our donors more now than ever. Indeed, our donors support the University along many pathways… at its most basic level, “unrestricted” donations to our annual fund support our annual operating expenses—i.e., the costs associated with student learning each year that are covered by the University versus student tuition and fee payments. These donations are incredibly valuable to the University, as they provide us with the ability to meet our students’ most urgent needs, especially in times like that associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. At the next level, donors can choose to support specific projects and initiatives of the University through “restricted funds.” These funds are, by definition, dedicated (restricted) to a specific purpose—whether addressing a short-term student need (e.g., COVID-19 relief) or funding a targeted initiative (e.g., our MERIT program within the College of Education). Of course, donors who hope to make a lasting/long-term impact on the University of St. Francis may choose to create “endowments” in support of their projects of interest—whether through scholarships, project-oriented funding, or other directed efforts that “pay out” a portion of their earnings (without ever touching the original contribution, or corpus) each year. These are, quite certainly, “the gift that keeps on giving.” Thanks to the generosity of our donors, as well as positive returns on our investment funds, the University of St. Francis is proud to report that as of May 31, 2021, we have over $58M in net assets at the beginning of FY22. So pour yourself a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this latest update about what’s happening at your USF. As always, please know that I continue to consider myself incredibly blessed to serve as your president and promise to continue to work hard to earn the trust that you have placed in me. Together, as always, we remain Saints United! Peace and all good things,

Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D. University of St. Francis President

USF NEWS SENIOR JONATHAN WOLF NAMED USF’S 2021 LINCOLN ACADEMY OF ILLINOIS STUDENT LAUREATE Senior biology major Jonathan Wolf was selected as this year’s Student Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois. Through this special program, the Lincoln Academy honors Student Laureates from each of the participating Illinois colleges and universities for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. Wolf was nominated for the honor by Brian Michalak, USF baseball head coach, and Joanna Kourtidis, assistant director of USF’s Academic Resource Center. Following his graduation in the spring, Wolf aspires to enroll in a cardiovascular perfusionist program to obtain either a related certificate or master’s degree. Once his career path begins, Wolf plans to use his faith as a way to connect with and serve his community because service is very important to him.

NEARLY $18,000 RAISED ON GIVING TUESDAY FOR STUDENT EMERGENCY SCHOLARSHIPS USF’s Institutional Advancement team was thrilled to raise close to $18,000 from donors and friends on Giving Tuesday in November. This year’s campaign focused on the Student Emergency Fund, which provides current students experiencing hardship with a one-time grant of $500 for resources such as food, transportation, housing, and academic fees. Funds raised will aid over 35 USF students. Gifts were generously matched by the university’s sponsoring congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, and a group of anonymous donors—doubling the scholarship support possible for students in need. USF extends its sincerest thanks to all who participated!

USF RECOGNIZED BY PRINCETON REVIEW USF is one of the 158 best colleges in the Midwest according to The Princeton Review. The education services company listed USF in the Best in the Midwest section on its “2022 Best Colleges: Region by Region” listing, available at princetonreview.com/bestmwcolleges. The honor marks the 14th consecutive year USF has been named to this national listing, which recognizes 654 colleges and universities (representing just 23% of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities) that it considers both academically outstanding and a valuable collegiate option. “National recognition such as this—a fourteenth consecutive year of recognition by The Princeton Review—demonstrates the University of St. Francis’ longstanding and ongoing commitment to student success in terms of retention to graduation rates to in-field job placement,” USF President Arvid C. Johnson, Ph.D., said. A few weeks later, The Princeton Review again honored USF as one of the nation’s 420 most environmentally responsible colleges in The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2022 Edition. The guide is accessible for free at princetonreview.com/green-guide. “This recognition serves as a nice acknowledgement of our efforts to increase the campus’s sustainability projects and awareness,” said Jessica Conte ‘13, ’20, co-chair of the USF Sustainability Committee with Nicole Salow. USF’s sustainability efforts are tied to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi—remembered for his love of the environment and all living things.

» The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently announced that 24 Illinois colleges and universities, including USF, have volunteered for a pilot program to develop plans to recruit and retain future teachers of color. The pilot will help establish best practices ahead of ISBE requiring all 54 Illinois educator preparation programs to develop plans next year. An ISBE press release explained the recruitment and retention efforts are part of ISBE’s three-year strategic plan, which includes the goal of increasing teacher diversity in Illinois public schools. The release also cited research from the Learning Policy Institute, which showed that teachers of color boost the academic performance of students of color, including reading and math test scores, graduation rates and aspirations to attend college. Studies also show that students taught by teachers of the same race are less likely to be chronically absent and less likely to experience exclusionary discipline. USF College of Education dean John Gambro, Ed.D., said that the pilot program aligns closely with some of USF’s top priorities. “The University of St. Francis places equity and social justice as a top priority. We view this collaboration as an opportunity to share some of our successes and learn from other successful programs from across the state,” Gambro said.

ALUMNI NEWS 2021 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS Each year, the USF Alumni & Family Relations Office announces a distinguished alumna/nus from each college, nominated by their peers, as well as the recipient of the Presidential Alumni Award, selected by USF’s president. Congratulations to all awardees, who were formally recognized in October!

PRESIDENTIAL ALUMNI AWARD: CHARLOTTE CODO ‘74 Charlotte Codo began her studies at St. Francis when her children were in middle school and high school. A disciplined scholar, she was drawn into the study of French by her influential instructors at St. Francis. Originally educated as a nurse at Wesley Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University, then as an artist and always a student of nature, Codo responded powerfully to the world of French literature and culture. After graduation, she studied outdoor watercolor painting and pastels in the south of France for many summers. Codo’s lifelong love of nature prompted the development of her husband Norman’s family farm in Frankfort, Illinois into a 30-acre native prairie and oak savannah. In 2019, the Codo family donated their beautiful property to the University of St. Francis, demonstrating the gratitutde Charlotte still feels for her years of engagement at St. Francis.

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES ALUMNI AWARD: DR. JILLIAN SCHERER ‘05 After graduating from USF, Jillian Scherer, M.D., IBCLC went to Loyola’s Stritch School of Medicine and obtained her medical degree. While in training, she realized she enjoyed a wide variety of medical conditions and treasured the human connection found in family medicine. She started residency at Waukesha Family Medicine Residency in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where she was not only trained in family medicine, but also in advanced skills in obstetrics, in hopes of being a physician who could provide care “from womb to tomb.”

Scherer and her family eventually moved to Olney, Illinois, where as a family medicine physician, she started a direct primary care clinic called Whole Family Health. She is happy to have joined a progressive movement of primary care physicians who treasure respect, integrity, service, and compassion in their practices.

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION ALUMNI AWARD: SHEILA BRUNE ‘86, ‘09 Sheila Brune became an R.N. at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, then began her career working in Los Angeles, California, caring for patients at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Brune eventually enrolled at USF for a B.S., then an M.S. in health services administration, which certified her in quality, utilization, and case management and made her eligible for positions with increasing responsibility. After a medical error led to her father’s death, she told her story at numerous conferences in hopes of saving others. She also served on the board of her local homeless shelter and the Red Cross, and was active in Kiwanis, Beta Sigma Phi and the Philanthropic Educational Organization. After retiring, she worked as a substitute school nurse, wrote the life stories of hospice patients, and was a proud volunteer at COVID vaccination clinics.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ALUMNI AWARD: DR. KARLA GUSEMAN ‘01 Karla Guseman, Ph.D., began her career in education at Joliet Township High School (JTHS) in 2000 as a science teacher at Joliet Central. She served in this capacity for six years, taking on various leadership roles associated with the

science curriculum, school improvement planning, strategic planning, and professional development. In 2006, she shifted to an administrative role as the curriculum director for science and applied life before being promoted in 2011 to assistant superintendent for educational services. Guseman was promoted to superintendent of JTHS District 204 in February of 2020. She believes that all students must have an equal opportunity for a high-quality education, as well as access to a relevant and rigorous curriculum that will allow them to acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful in their continued studies.

LEACH COLLEGE OF NURSING ALUMNI AWARD: JADA SIMS ‘20 Jada Sims grew up in Romeoville, Illinois. She faced many obstacles along the way but never gave up because of the support she had from teachers and her family. During her last two years of high school, she began to take steps toward a nursing career by attending Wilco Area Career Center, a technical school located in her hometown. She continued her journey at USF as a first-generation student and served others in several campus roles, including Saints Ambassador, Foundations mentor, Orientation Board member and health assessment supplemental instructor. In 2020, she graduated with honors and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau nuring honor society. She is now a cardiac-neuro critical care nurse at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois, where she continues to make a difference in the lives of her patients. Sims is currently pursuing an MSN in nursing administration.

Philanthropy: ALLOWING OTHERS TO TAKE NOTHING FOR THE JOURNEY By Fr. Michael Jennrich, OFM, COBHA Chaplain In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 9:1-9, Jesus calls the Twelve together and readies them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He gives them power and authority to drive out all demons and cure diseases. He then tells them, “Take nothing for the journey.” No staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. “Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.” Most people, when preparing for a long journey, pack to safeguard their wellbeing— clothing, food and money being basic essentials. These items, however, don’t seem to matter to Jesus. He clearly instructs his disciples to leave everything behind. Keep in mind the distance between villages was several miles, surely a small overnight bag could have been permissible, but no. “Take nothing for the journey” was his command. Jesus wanted them to be dependent on the kindness of others to satisfy their hunger and thirst, thereby experiencing the providence of

God, so… take no bread. Most people would agree that trust in God is the platform upon which any good minister stands, but doesn’t Scripture also say that God helps those who help themselves? Even the pagans have a plan B. So why is Jesus insistent about having no financial backing? Simply put, it’s about setting an example. By divesting themselves of guaranteed resources, the disciples had no choice but to place every confidence in God’s providential nature. It should be evident then, take no money. Arriving at their destination, sine proprio, the disciples were to reside at whatever house they entered for the duration of their stay. No one questioned whether they would be welcomed, fed and sheltered by strangers. They disembarked with every confidence they would. Who were these generous souls into whose arms the disciples were sent? Jesus knew. In ancient Mediterranean civilizations they were recognized as lovers of humankind,

voluntarily extending practical benevolence towards others. In first century BCE they would have been known as “Believers” or “Followers of the Way.” Today, they are called philanthropists, benefactors or patrons. According to Webster’s Dictionary, philanthropy is “the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.” Looking through the lens of spirituality, philanthropy is a ministry through which other ministers’ needs are met allowing them to fully focus on doing what is theirs to do. Philanthropists today continue the legacy of the lovers of humankind through their generous support of individuals, organizations, and institutions dedicated to healing the maladies of the world. Seen as ministers to the ministers, philanthropists truly allow others to take nothing for the journey.

Victor Patterson ‘03 USF Trustee and Donor MEMORIES: One of my more profound memories was the intimate class setting, plus professionally accomplished classmates. The broad and diverse industries that were represented made for very thought provoking conversations on topics that were presented by professors. Inherent in this setting was the need to think, more, strategically than we already were. The bond among classmates and willingness to interact was special. WHAT DO YOU TREASURE? I value that the university wants to be relevant... that the university takes pride in its educational programming and values its students. As an alumnus, I’ve always been welcomed. The university has worked to remain connected to me and encouraged me to return. As a Board of Trustee member, I remain very, very humbled. I accept that my experience and voice is pursued to secure the present and future of our university (my alma mater). I treasure having the privilege to make a difference. WHY DO YOU GIVE BACK? Because the university accepted me…and gave me the foundation to be more successful than I may have been prior to my enrollment. “To whom much is given, much is required!”

Arlene Finkle ‘09 USF Student Life Administrative Assistant and Donor MEMORIES: I have so many great memories of USF, I could not write them all down! One big theme throughout is all the great friendships I have made at USF, with one of the best memories being seeing our students walk across the stage at commencement. The pride and confidence they feel shows on their faces and it is amazing to witness. WHAT DO YOU TREASURE? To preface this, I honestly believe God brought me to USF to help others and to build my faith. My relationship with Sr. Rosemary Small has left a lasting impact on my life and I hope she benefited from our friendship. I treasure the relationships I have cultivated over the past 30 plus years with the Sisters, administrators, faculty, staff and students. We are one family, all interconnected. The reason I remain at USF is because of the love and support I feel in the culture here. WHY DO YOU GIVE BACK? When I spend time in the Joliet community, I often see alumni who I knew as students and it is so rewarding to see their successes. I believe giving back to USF has a huge impact on the student experience and their learning outcomes.

USF Alumnus and Donor MEMORIES: Business Policy class taught by Dr. Steve Morrissette. This was the first time where I was able to apply all of the business classes at once. WHAT DO YOU TREASURE? I treasure the opportunities I’ve received in both the student role and as an alumnus. WHY DO YOU GIVE BACK? For me it is setting up a scholarship so my father’s memory lives on. It is a way to honor him at the same time helping a current student whose parent is a veteran.

Nicole Kulon Current Student WHAT DO YOU TREASURE? The Servant Leaders organization on campus, which I’m part of, was made possible through a generous donation. Since then, other students in the Servant Leaders program and I were able to discover our vocation throughout college, which we now can take with us one day when we are working in the business world... a gift I most especially appreciate and will cherish for a momentous amount of time. WHY GIVE BACK? As a senior student, I appreciate you and your donations. USF continuously requests donations and gifts, and I now understand why. Being a student who was able to see her visions come to life thanks to others’ generous donations, I have further acknowledged that callings and opportunities for the future can now be attained by me and so many other USF students.
