Staff and students from the University continue to be recognised nationally and internationally for their expertise.

(Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience) has received a €2.5 million European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award.

Professor Terry Callaghan (Animal and Plant Sciences) was awarded the Vega Medal by the King of Sweden for his work on understanding Arctic environments.

Corporate Information and Computing Services have been rated the best in the country by the Student Barometer survey, an independent students’ satisfaction survey.

Jess Coyne, Jess Ballinger and Jenny Carrington-Elson (Journalism students) won the New Student Magazine category at the Magazine Academy event, organised by the Periodicals Training Council, for Poppy, aimed at wives and girlfriends of men serving in the armed forces. Sambit Satpathy (Journalism student) took the prize for the New Concept Award for Bollywood First Take. Professors Matthew Flinders (Politics) and Alison James (ICOSS) received the title of Academician from the Academy of Social Sciences. Alex Griffiths (History student) and Liana Lonsdale (Journalism student) received the Team Leader of the Year Award at the Childreach International Winter Ball for leading a 12-day fundraising trek to the base camp of Mount Everest. Professor Rod Hose (Cardiovascular Science) has received an honorary degree from the Universitatea Tehnica din Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Dr Stuart Johnson (Biomedical Science) was awarded a University Research Fellowship by the Royal Society.

Professor Marysia Placzek

(Biomedical Science) was one of ten female scientists and Professor communicators Marysia Placzek to receive a Suffrage Heirloom at the Women in Science: Nurturing Nobels event, commemorating 100 years of women pioneers in life science.

Dr Paul Reynolds (Civil and Structural Engineering) has been awarded a Leadership Fellowship by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Professor Keith Ridgway (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre) was awarded a CBE for services to manufacturing research.

Professor David Sanders (Infection and Immunity) was awarded the Cuthbertson Medal 2011 by the Nutrition Society.

The University of Sheffield received an award from CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of

Education) Europe for exceptional, significant and sustained improvement Professor Jenny Saul (Philosophy) was the first UK woman to receive the Distinguished Woman Philosopher Award from the US-based Society for Women in Philosophy.

SheffieldVolunteering, based in the Students’ Union, won the Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award for their work in Sheffield and the surrounding area.

Emeritus Professor Charles Stirling

(Chemistry) is a Foundation Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

The Students’ Union won the International Services Award 2011 from the National Union of Students.

The University of Sheffield was named an Enterprise Champion at the 3rd annual National Enterprise Educator Awards, held at the International Entrepreneurship Educators Conference.

(SIFE) were also highly commended in the Student Educator award category; and won the award for the Best Business Blog at the Some Comms Awards 2011.

Professor Alan Walker (Sociological Studies) has been made a Fellow of the

British Academy.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pam Shaw, Director of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience, and Miles Stevenson, Director of Development, at the award ceremony. Miles said, “The matched funding scheme has encouraged mass participation within the University's alumni base, ultimately resulting in our 11,000th donation this year.”
