We’ve built relationships with organisations of all sizes and across all industry sectors to bring you opportunities to gain authentic and meaningful experiences, which will help give you the edge in a competitive job market after graduating.

We use our links with industry in multiple ways throughout the curriculum. In addition to offering many placement or internship opportunities, these include using live briefs as part of a course, involving industry experts in the creation of course content, providing guest lectures and taking part in the assessment process. This ensures you will develop not only the knowledge, but the key skills and attributes needed by employers, and what you learn in the classroom can equally be used in a professional work setting.

Embarking on a degree is no easy feat, and it should be challenging personally as well as academically. We pride ourselves on the

support we offer to our students, whatever your circumstances, and we’re here with you every step of the way.

You’ll receive personalised wrap-around support throughout your time at Salford, whether you’d like extra guidance on successful revision techniques, understanding how to perfect your interview skills, or to fine tune your digital skills, we can help. Alongside our more academic skills development, we also provide extensive support through our askUS service. Created in coordination with students, our dedicated askUS service is our one-stop shop encompassing wellbeing, counselling, financial advice, disability support, accommodation, careers and enterprise, LGBTQIA+, international and faith support.

New Adelphi Art Gallery

CULTURE AND ART The New Adelphi Art Gallery offers a permanent space to showcase our Art Collection. We curate between three to five exhibitions per year, often in collaboration with our students, graduates and other museums, galleries and independent projects.

Just a ten minute walk from Peel Park campus, Islington Mill is home to radical, subversive music and visual arts, with a mix of events and exhibitions to inspire and surprise you. Whitworth Art Gallery holds an eclectic and everchanging collection of historic fine art, contemporary and modern art, textiles, prints and sculptures, set in the beautiful Whitworth Park.

SHOPPING Manchester city centre offers shops to suit every budget, with the best high street and designer names at the Arndale Centre, as well as vintage and alternative markets in Afflecks and the Northern Quarter. The Trafford Centre is also just a short bus or tram ride away too.

Home Sweet Home, Northern Quarter

We admit it, we’re a bunch of foodies here – but you can find a lot more than avocado on toast at one of Manchester’s many food and drink establishments.

Salford’s Chapel Street, just a few minutes’ walk from our Peel Park campus, is home to a growing number of independent outlets including veggie favourite Deli Lama, authentic Italian pizza at Vero Moderno, homemade Spanish tapas at Porta and beautiful cakes and artwork at GK Gallery.

In the Northern Quarter it’s all about quirky diners, canteens and cafes – from huge breakfasts or vegan junk food, to American-style burgers and homemade cakes.

FOOD AND DRINK

Manchester’s Chinatown is the second biggest in the UK, with a host of Chinese, Korean and Japanese restaurants, as well as a number of speciality supermarkets.

Just outside of the city centre you’ll find Rusholme’s famous ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Make sure you also visit one of the regular food markets in Manchester city centre or at Salford Quays, whilst the indoor market at Mackie Mayor brings you quality food and drink from local producers and brewers.

MUSIC AND THEATRE Live music is everywhere in Manchester; see the biggest names at venues such as Victoria Warehouse, the Academy and the O2 Apollo; indie and underground gigs at Night and Day Café, Soup Kitchen and Gorilla; plus annual festivals such as Parklife and Sounds of the City.

HOME is more than a cinema; it’s Manchester’s centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film, complete with a bar and restaurant.

Discover your new favourite director and get involved in exciting events and exhibitions. We’re proud to be founding partners of HOME, which opens up opportunities for students such as gaining direct industry involvement in the curriculum on relevant courses.

New Adelphi Theatre

The Lowry Theatre, named after the Salford artist LS Lowry and located at Salford Quays, hosts plays, comedy shows, dance performances, family activities and gallery exhibitions – right on our doorstep next to MediaCityUK. Want to enjoy your culture even closer to home whilst here? Our campus is home to New Adelphi Theatre, a 350seat theatre which hosts a range of events, from side-splitting comedy to ground breaking dance projects and big band entertainment, involving both our own students and external companies.

Living in Salford and being so close to Manchester city centre means I get to experience so much culture which is fantastic. When I’m in university I study at MediaCityUK so I get to go celebrity spotting!

SPORT If you’re into sport, you couldn’t choose a better city to live and study in. Manchester is home to two of the world’s leading football clubs; Manchester City, with the Etihad based in Sportcity along with the National Squash Centre, Regional Tennis Centre and National Cycling Centre and the world famous Manchester United, with Old Trafford just two miles from our Peel Park campus.

The Manchester Aquatics Centre, purpose built for the 2000 Commonwealth Games, is located on Oxford Road in the city centre and boasts a 50m swimming pool, diving pool, gym and health suite.

If going for a run to clear your head and enjoy some fresh air is more your type of sport, there are plenty of local running routes. You can take part in organised runs nearby, including two parkrun routes, Great Run Local events at Salford Quays, and the University’s own running club, or set your own route in one of the many local parks, including Peel Park, right on our doorstep!

Salford Crescent train station is located between our Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses, connecting you to Manchester in less than ten minutes, and Manchester Airport in just half an hour. You can easily travel between Manchester city centre and MediaCityUK by tram, and travelling between MediaCityUK and our Peel Park and Frederick Road campuses by bus is free to students, just show your student ID on the bus.

If you decide to commute, there are plenty of local connections to get you to and from your classes quickly and easily by train or bus. We’ve also got dedicated spaces on campus for our commuter students, see page 40 to find out more.

Our teaching and learning facilities are split between our three campuses...

PEEL PARK Our main campus, Peel Park, offers you the best of both worlds: state-of-the-art learning facilities within minutes of a world-class city, set against beautiful green spaces to relax and socialise.

On this campus you’ll easily spot our futuristic New Adelphi building, the home of our art, design, music, performance and architecture subjects. Equally as eye-catching though is the Peel building, opened in 1896 and one of our founding buildings, now home to students studying courses in environment and life sciences. Peel Park campus is also home to our new £65 million science, engineering and environment building.

FREDERICK ROAD Frederick Road campus, just ten minutes’ walk from Peel Park, is home to our nursing, midwifery, psychology, social sciences, sports and health sciences courses.

Here you’ll find all the facilities you’ll need to equip you with the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a successful and fulfilling career, such as the Patient Simulation Suite, Sports Injury Clinic, Podiatry Clinic and Human Performance Lab.

MEDIACITYUK We are the only university to have a campus at MediaCityUK, the home of TV, digital and creative businesses in the north, including the BBC and ITV. It’s a lively, professional environment, with a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops and leisure facilities, which is expected to double in size in the coming years as the second phase of planned development is completed.

science, engineering and environment courses will soon be delivered from their new £65 million home in the heart of our Peel Park campus.

We are building a world class sustainable four-storey building, which will occupy 15,500 square metres and is part of a £2.5 billion Crescent Masterplan. A 240 acre major regeneration scheme being delivered by the University, Salford City Council and development partner, The English Cities Fund. The scheme is aimed at driving economic and social prosperity for the whole of the city.

The new building will feature a wind tunnel and high-spec laser laboratories. The whole building is also served by electricity only.

The primary heat source for all systems is electric air source heat pumps – it is a 100% electric building!

The work on the new building is due to be complete in the summer of 2022 and will bring together teaching and world class research, providing our students unique opportunities that prepare them for the real world.

OUR FACILITIES I spend the majority of my time studying in the New Adelphi by choice, it’s such an open and freeing space to get work done.

We have a long history of providing people with the tools they need to succeed.

We invest heavily in our facilities to ensure you’re using industry-standard equipment during your studies, meaning you’ll graduate with a working knowledge of the practical concepts that you’ll be faced with day to day. We’ve got ambitious plans for the future too and our campus continues to evolve and grow.

Our doors are also open to industry, and you’ll often brush shoulders with staff from commercial organisations using our facilities for testing products or training their staff. Here are just a taster of our facilities...

PATIENT SIMULATION SUITE When you train to become a nurse, midwife or allied health professional at Salford, you’ll face real-life scenarios in the safe and supportive environment of our Simulation Suite.

ANECHOIC CHAMBER One of a select few found in the world, and regarded as the quietest place in the north-west, our anechoic chamber provides students, researchers and industry partners with a unique acoustic environment. With no audio reflections, this room is ideal for testing microphones, musical equipment and quiet products. Once you enter the chamber and close the doors, it’s said you can hear your blood circulating!

Set up just like a hospital ward, the suite is equipped with human patient simulators, including two adults, a newborn baby, a child and a birthing mum. You’ll learn how to perform vital procedures that you’ll use throughout your career, under the supervision of trained practitioners.

As part of the suite, we also have an immersive simulation room, allowing students to be transported to any environment without having to leave the suite. The technology combines a series of cameras which project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to transform the space into anything from the back of an ambulance to a nightclub, prison cell or family home.

CLIFFORD WHITWORTH LIBRARY Our main library is a modern learning space with PC suites, Mac computers, laptops available to loan, bookable work rooms and café.

The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So you can study at a time that suits you. You’ll also find study spaces across the University, so a quiet place to work is never far away.

THE OCTAVE The Octave is an immersive 3D experience which engages sight, sound and touch and is capable of connecting people from around the world in one single virtual reality. It enables us to rapidly prototype solutions and explore new techniques before they are launched into industry.

The Octave is designed to complement and integrate with other specialist facilities across our Peel Park and MediaCityUK campuses.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE LABORATORY The Human Performance Lab is a teaching and research facility used by students on our sport and exercise courses, as well as physiotherapy, podiatry and prosthetics and orthotics.

It’s one of the best equipped labs of its kind, containing an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment, including a 30-metre sprint track with inbuilt force platforms, motion capture systems, blood and gas analysis equipment and speed guns. We also

have a separate physiological testing laboratory and fully equipped strength and conditioning suite for recreational exercisers to elite athletes.

On campus we have a number of working clinics including, a podiatry and sports injury clinics, counselling centre and prosthetics and orthotics labs. Under the supervision of fully trained staff, our students use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide a wide range of treatments to patients and clients.

BODMER LABORATORY The Bodmer Lab, named after Sir Walter Bodmer, the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is our multimillion-pound hub for students studying biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and wildlife related courses.

The Bodmer Lab gives our students learning experiences using advanced technical equipment in an accessible, interconnected environment. Equipped with a sophisticated AV system and network of screens, the space is designed to ensure that students can clearly see and hear the lecturers and technicians from wherever they are situated.

NEW ADELPHI

is the home of arts and culture on campus, designed to inspire your imagination and spark your curiosity. If you study music, performance, art, design or architecture, you’ll hone your skills in facilities that mirror those used by professionals in the industry.

Artists and designers have their own dedicated workshops, ranging from traditional model making tools to 3D printers and laser cutters. The printing lab contains specialist equipment from screen printers and lithotables to etching presses and felt looms.

For architecture students, our carefully designed open plan studio space provides you with an inspiring environment to develop your ideas, work collaboratively and share best practice.

All of these facilities allow us and our students to strengthen the relationships we have with industry, including The Lowry, Islington Mill, ITV and the BBC.

The theatre is equipped with the latest lighting, PA equipment and high-powered projection, seating for up to 350 people, and can be adapted to different configurations to suit each individual event.

Our professional-quality screen acting studios allow you to film in front of high definition cameras, while the voice acting studio will give you the chance to master a variety of vocal performances used in radio or video game production.

Music students have access to six professional recording studios, built using specialist room-within-room construction methods and housing recording booths, Yamaha pianos, drum kits from DW and Gretsch and amplification by Ampeg, Fender and Vox. The adjoining control rooms are extensively equipped with hardware audio processors from Bricasti, Neve and Warm Audio and feature the first six new ‘Heritage Edition’ recording consoles in the country, manufactured by Audient. Primary monitoring is provided by ATC and PMC loudspeakers.

Budding photographers can experiment with new techniques in our professional photography studios, which feature lighting equipment, a dark room and the latest cameras and accessories.

JOURNALISM CENTRE MediaCityUK houses our journalism centre, which includes a TV studio, newsroom, radio studio and editing gallery. Here our journalism students produce digital content across multiple channels, developing and honing their reporting and content production skills.

TV STUDIOS We have two TV studios and a green screen area equipped with cameras that can turn the studio into a 3D digital environment, allowing us to achieve effects like those seen on weather reports and children’s television. These facilities are industry-standard and are regularly used by the BBC and other media organisations.

DIGITAL PERFORMANCE LAB Our experimental performance and lecture space is equipped with one of the largest HD screens in Europe and is perfect for showcasing computer gaming, animation and dance performances.

MediaCityUK is home to our student-led broadcast channel, Quays News - our University-wide news channel made by students right here on campus with support from industry professionals and guest editors from the BBC and ITV.

MEDIA CITYUK Every time I step into MediaCityUK it’s just so inspiring. I think it’s also really great that my lecturers are industry professionals which is very motivating, working among people who are in the positions we’re aiming for. As well as that, there’s the obvious factor of resources. I get to work with state-of-the-art equipment, which is fantastic, as you familiarise yourself with equipment the industry are using.

unique additive and digital manufacturing hub is made up of the Maker Space and the Morson Engine Room, and is funded by the Salford-based Morson Group - a global leader in technical recruitment and engineering excellence. In this space you can acquire real-world engineering and digital fabrication skills alongside hands-on training, providing the experience that employers want and need in industry.

THE MAKER SPACE The Maker Space is an open lab for students to explore digital fabrication technologies.

Students have access to 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters and clean working spaces for assembling projects. There is also a dedicated computer suite for 2D and 3D design (CAD) and electronics workbenches.

THE MORSON ENGINE ROOM The Morson Engine Room is home to heavy duty, industrial grade machinery and equipped with a waterjet cutter, metal additive manufacturing, large format 3D printing, state-of-the-art digital and optical microscopes and reverse engineering metrology instrumentation. Guided by skilled technicians, students can learn how to use and operate these machines to build skills in relation to design for manufacture, assembly and inspection.

The theatre, located in the New Adelphi Building on our Peel Park campus, has an exciting events calendar with live music, art, comedy and performance events. With work on show from established, international touring companies to emerging artists and our own students, we are proud to host a diverse programme with something for everyone.

At its heart, our vision is committed to nurturing the emerging talents of our graduates, supporting the work of our postgraduates and fostering partnerships with regional, national and international artists.

Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’, which opened in January 1850. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to the museum’s famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum.

Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions from its home adjacent to our Peel Building on Peel Park campus. We’d also recommend a visit to the gift shop, which showcases work from local artists and designers, and don’t forget to try one of the café’s homemade cakes!

Engel’s Beard is a sculpture and also a unique bouldering wall at the heart of our Peel Park campus.

It’s so easy to commute with Salford being so close to the City Centre, just a ten minute journey from Manchester Piccadilly station and then a two minute walk to my lectures.

are just over a mile away for Manchester city centre, that’s just a 15 minute walk or five-minutes if you hop on one of the buses which run every few minutes. If you’re travelling by train, Salford Crescent is perfectly placed with four trains to Manchester Piccadilly every hour.

If you are travelling to our MediaCityUK campus, you can show your student ID card on the bus to ride for free. Alternatively, if you’re commuting in by tram, there’s a Metrolink stop right outside our MediaCityUK campus.

Salford unites all sports teams at the University, with the aim of making exercise accessible and fun for everyone. So whether you’re a regular gym-goer or you’ve never even taken the tags off your trainers, we can help you find a sport or activity that suits you – you could even start your own club.

SPORTS CENTRE Our facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool with spa and sauna; five fitness suites, including strength, cardio and conditioning rooms, all containing the latest gym equipment supplied by our partners Matrix Fitness UK; and multi-use sports hall for badminton, basketball, netball and five-a-side-football.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS We’ve teamed up with a number of sports clubs and institutions from across the region to create opportunities for many of our students.

We have a wide-ranging partnership with Salford Red Devils RLFC, with players and club staff studying BSc and MSc courses in Salford Business School and the School of Health and Society, whilst our students take on placements at the club each trimester. We support the club with their pre-season testing, creation and development of their marketing and content, and even organise matchday ‘takeovers’, with several University students going to work for the club after graduation.

“I was determined to make sure I got the best grades possible, so I applied for a placement. I contacted the Employability Hub because they have a CV service. They sat down with me and I went through my CV and what I wanted to go into. I study Marketing and because Marketing is so broad, there’s so many parts you can go into, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I applied for a few placements including Unilever and was successful.

To get the internship with Unilever was massive. Moving to London was a big thing for me, I didn’t know anyone really, but Unilever has a Facebook page when you first join where you can speak to other people who have got placements and it also helps if you get a house. I live with two other girls on placement and they’re lovely.

One of them is in Marketing and I learn

about what she’s doing, how it differs from what I’m doing and then helps me make my path to know where I want to go.

When I got to Unilever, I didn’t realise how much responsibility I would be given, it’s an actual role, but I received a lot of support from my manager. My placement has also helped me prepare for my final year.

Deadlines have been difficult for me. In uni I really struggled with them just because I like to plan, so I’d always do pages and pages on planning. Working for Unilever has helped me with that. The Eisenhower diagram has helped me put my to do list into boxes and helped me decide what needs to be done now, what needs to be done next week.”

If you’ve got a business idea of your own, our Launch team can help bring it to life through funding awards and business start-up support, and we’ve recently launched a brand new business incubation centre on campus to help.

For any students that have a brilliant business idea but are unsure of the next steps, or for those thinking of going freelance, we can help turn ideas into reality and provide support through all the vital steps of setting up in business.

We can provide you with free hot-desking office space in the heart of Peel Park campus, where you will have access to a networking lounge to grab a coffee and make those all important business connections.

The Launch incubator also offers a wide range of support to make the venture of creating a business less daunting. In partnership with the Business Growth Hub we offer a six month support programme including workshops on specific aspects of building a business, as well as mentorship from experienced professionals and subject specific drop in sessions, delivered by staff from the Salford Business School. You will also have access to grants for vital start-up essentials such as software, insurances, licences, basic equipment, training or attendance at trade fairs.

Oliver Buxton, a third year Acoustical and Audio Engineering student and band manager, has launched his business Delux Music Collective to support musicians and offer them fairer treatment. Oliver has been involved with the Manchester music scene for a number of years and currently manages six artists.

The idea for the business came after Oliver had noticed that musicians were being treated poorly by promoters. He said: “It became very apparent from working with bands that a lot of promoters don’t treat artists correctly. We’ve seen so many people drop out of the industry because of it, and that’s what I want to prevent.”

The business organises all aspects of live music from booking venues, marketing materials, booking artists, photographers and videographers.

Oliver said, “I joined Launch because I had no idea about anything to do with business but I knew everything I needed to know about music. I thought if we’re going to grow, and we’re going to grow properly, then I’m going to need some help and Launch was just the perfect opportunity to springboard my ideas.”

It’s an interesting talking point for job interviews, as employers like to see that you’ve done something out of your comfort zone.

“I decided to take part in a study experience abroad because I have always been interested in seeing how the education system differs in America and in association with TV production, which is a large industry in both the UK and the US. Being exposed to a completely new education system enabled me to gain a lot more confidence. Living in another country for four months, away from the comforts of home, made me more confident and improved my communication and interpersonal skills. I have also gained a lot of friends whom I will have for life, not only from America but all over the world (including Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, and Venezuela). Meeting these people also gave me a better understanding of different cultures and lifestyles around the world.

STUDENT VOICE We ensure that your voice is heard at the University and beyond, all the way from Salford to a national level. When we say we are run by students for students, we mean it.

We have a full democratic structure that is at the heart of everything we do; our Sabbatical Officers are all elected students, who work full-time to lead your Union and ensure you have the best possible time while at Salford.

The structure is supported by voluntary officers, school representatives and student representatives.

We also run a number of student-led campaigns and offer funding opportunities for your potential campaign ideas. So if there’s an issue that’s important to you that you want to shout about, we’ll help you do just that.

ADVICE AND SUPPORT We know that being at University can sometimes be scary and present new challenges for students. At some point you may require some extra advice and support from your Students’ Union, and we’re on hand to help you.

Our Advice Centre specialises in academic matters and is here to provide independent, friendly, professional advice. You can pop in and make an appointment throughout the week to speak to one of our advisors.

Our Denizen scheme is also there to support students in their halls of residence, made up of fellow students to help you out and pass on your feedback or concerns to the right people.

Rafiki is the Students’ Union’s listening service, led by students, for students. If you’re experiencing any problems while you’re at university, you can come in and talk to our volunteers. They are trained students and can listen to you and provide peer support.They can also signpost you to support services on campus or externally which can help. Rafiki, based in University House is a drop-in service, so you don’t need an appointment. We also offer an instant messaging service, to chat to our volunteers.

If you’re a dedicated sports person looking to show your skills on a competitive level, our Club Sport teams play up and down the country against other universities. Or if you love to take part in team games on a smaller scale, we have Campus Leagues, competing with just Salford students. If you’d rather play without any commitment, Give Sport a Go allows you to turn up and try new sports every week, with a variety to choose from.

EVENTS We know how to throw an awesome party. Our dedicated events team put on a whole range of exciting events throughout the year, representing the diversity and interests of all of our members.

FEES AND FINANCE Don’t think let money worries stop you from going to university.

I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford to live away from home, but the maintenance loan covered all of my bills and accommodation. There’s so much help and support in place if you do have any worries or questions, so don’t be put off!

Our fees for students from the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man studying a full-time undergraduate degree are £9,250* per year for the first year of study.

FEES

for UK part-time students will vary depending on the number of credits taken per year. Financial support is available to undergraduate students to help with the cost of university.

Tuition fee loans, available for students from the UK, are paid directly to the University each term and you don’t need to pay anything upfront. If you’re studying full-time, you’ll receive a maximum of £9,250 per year, depending on the course. If you’re a part-time student, you’ll receive a maximum of £6,935 (figures correct at time of production).

A maintenance loan for living costs is also available to support undergraduate students from the UK. The maximum amount that you may receive depends on a number of things, including your household income, your course, where you will live while you are studying and your individual circumstances. Loan for living costs are paid directly into your bank account each term.

You currently don’t have to pay back your loans for tuition fees or living costs until you are earning over £26,575** per year.

The loans are repaid at a rate of 9% of your income over the threshold amount. So the threshold is £26,575 and say your salary is £27,500, you’ll pay 9% of £925, which is £6.94 per month – about the same as buying three coffees each month. Repayments start the April after you graduate (provided you are earning over the threshold). and are taken automatically, so you don’t need to set this up. If you are self-employed, you would be advised to contact HMRC separately to set up the repayments.

For students from low-income backgrounds and living in areas where participation in higher education is low, there will also be the opportunity to receive an additional £350 of credits each year. ACCOMMODATION On-campus accommodation (run by Campus Living Villages) ranges from £135* per week, depending on site and room size.

UTILITIES AND OTHER OUTGOINGS If you are not living in campus accommodation, you’ll need to take into account the cost of bills for water, electricity, gas and internet.

HEALTH AND FITNESS Our gym membership costs from £13* per month, depending on the facilities you choose to use. University sports teams will charge weekly membership fees, plus the cost of your kit.

LEISURE A cinema ticket costs from £5-£10*, and theatre tickets between £27-£70*.

An evening meal at a restaurant with friends typically costs around £12-15* each, plus the cost of any drinks. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants and cinemas.

TRANSPORT A weekly bus ticket costs about £18*, a single ticket on the tram costs around £3.80* and a weekly tram ticket starts from £10.60*, depending on your destination.

Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes.

BOOKS AND STATIONERY New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books second-hand to save money. The on-campus shop sells affordable stationery.

CLOTHES AND GROOMING Things like haircuts and winter coats need to be included in your budget. The best way to find a good deal is to shop around – there are plenty of affordable hairdressers and clothing shops in Manchester, and don’t forget to ask if they offer a student discount!

Our minimum entry requirement for a degree course is two A levels or equivalent, but some courses will require three A levels.

If your chosen course is in science or engineering, please check our website to see whether A levels in physics, chemistry and biology where science practical assessments are taken are a requirement for entry.

Most courses also require a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English and maths, (or grade C for qualifications taken prior to 2017), or a grade C in both subjects where GCSEs are taken in Northern Ireland or Wales, however some may require a grade 5.

We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, including work experience and potential to succeed in your chosen course.

International students will need to show a good level of English (usually a minimum of IELTS at 6.0 or above, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component). This can vary depending on the course though, so please check the course information on our website for details.

To make your application to Salford smooth and stress-free, follow this step-by-step guide and make a note of the important dates and deadlines.

I was expecting the application process to be quite tedious and confusing but it was really straightforward.

There were a couple of times where I had a query and the admissions team were able to help out straight away.

STEP 1 STEP 2 Book on to one of our Open Days in June, October and November 2021 by going to salford.ac.uk/undergraduate/open-days.

Open Days are your opportunity to meet current students and teaching staff and get a feel for where you’ll study. Before the event, make a note of all your burning questions to ask our staff and students.

STEP 4 Once your application has been received, it will be considered and we might ask you to come and meet us for an interview or audition, depending on your course. After this, we’ll make a decision and let you know the outcome via UCAS Track.

STEP 6 If you are made a conditional or unconditional offer, we’ll invite you to an Applicant Visit Day, which will take place between February and April 2022.

STEP 8 If you applied by 15 January you’ll need to choose a firm choice and an insurance choice by early May 2022.

STEP 10 Depending on what you’re currently studying, you should receive your results in July or August. If you’ve met the conditions for your course at Salford, we’ll let you know via UCAS Track that your place is confirmed. If your results were different to those you expected, there may be options open to you through clearing.

Think about what you really want to know not just about your course, but where you’ll live, the experiences you’ll gain, the people you’ll meet. Attend UCAS fairs, go to careers events held in your school or college, talk to your teachers and careers advisor too.

STEP 3 When you’ve made up your mind about which course you want to take, apply online through ucas.com before 15 January 2022 to guarantee consideration. You can still apply after this date but we can’t guarantee your application will be considered as some courses may close.

FOUNDATION YEARS We believe that higher education should be within reach for all those who are passionate about learning and achieving their career goals. If you’ve got the drive and commitment to study, but don’t quite have the qualifications needed to start an honours degree, a foundation year course could be for you.

Our range of foundation courses can help to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress onto one of our undergraduate degrees. They’ll introduce you to key concepts and ideas, and provide you with basic knowledge of approaches, concepts, theories and principles. The foundation level places strong emphasis on the development of relevant study/ transferable skills and a responsible approach to learning through a set of compulsory core modules. These are ideal if you want to develop your career but don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an

PARTNER COLLEGE STUDY As part of our commitment to giving more people access to higher education, we work with further education colleges in the north-west to offer a wide range of courses where you can study locally with the option of progressing to the University of Salford to complete or continue your studies.

This range of courses includes degrees and foundation degrees. Degree programmes provide the opportunity of studying the first year at a local college before progressing to the University to complete your degree.

Foundation degree programmes are delivered at partner colleges and you can then apply

to top up your studies to degree level at the University if you wish. Courses at our partner colleges currently include the areas of business, arts, sport and psychology.

The fact that this route offered me the chance to become RICS accredited and get a full degree in three years was a no brainer! I am able to relate my university work to my work within industry on a daily basis and I am getting the opportunity to work on my own projects.

To ensure you have the maximum chance of success whilst studying at a partner college, we provide a dedicated programme of support throughout the year. This includes talks by University academic staff to students at partner colleges and organised visits to the university campus to attend events relevant to your programme of study, such as guest lectures and masterclasses. As a partner college student, you are automatically a student here at Salford too and therefore have access to certain University facilities and resources whilst you study.

DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS A degree apprenticeship allows you to study at degree level whilst earning a salary and gaining practical, on-the-job skills. This work-based route to a degree means you will be working alongside industry experts gaining vital experience to help you excel in your chosen career.

If you’re looking to gain a degree qualification along with experience in line with your chosen career path, then a degree apprenticeship could be the perfect route for you. You’ll have the ability to apply theory and knowledge from the classroom directly to your place of work on an ongoing basis.

You will study part-time at the university and will spend the rest of your time in the workplace.

These apprenticeships are funded by the government and your employer so there are no tuition fees to worry about. We work with a wide range of employers including Peninsula, Jacobs UK, Atkins, Network Rail, the NHS, Morgan Sindall, Seddon Construction, New Charter Housing and Wilmott Dixon.

“I chose to do a degree apprenticeship as it offered the best of both worlds for me. I am able to work four days of the week whether it be on site or in the office, combined with being in university one day a week.

The benefits of completing a degree apprenticeship are huge, firstly the experience gained over the five years in the workplace and University mean that as an individual you have knowledge of how to act as a professional and calling on past experience you can solve problems, in the case of surveying if you have seen a particular building defect in a previous survey where a recent graduate has not it is much easier to write reports and comment on the defect. Another great benefit is obviously the ability to earn whilst you learn as well as not having to worry about the tuition fees for the programme as these are paid for via my employer.

Tom Hodgkins is a trainee building surveyor at Rider Levett Bucknall, a leading independent organisation in cost management, quantity surveying, project management and advisory services, and is currently studying for his BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying at the University of Salford.

I am a building surveyor and within the workplace I get up to many different activities, including completing surveys and getting involved in project management on small works, we have a great range of clients so no days are the same, one day could be surveying a residential property, the next chairing meetings with people twice my age which is surreal!

I would encourage anyone thinking about the degree apprenticeship route to go for it! The benefits of completing a degree apprenticeship are so vast you’d be silly not to!”

ROSIE

Rosie is studying our BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine course. The course focuses on the use of exercise prescription and dietary intervention as treatment for lifestyle-based conditions and illnesses. With the pandemic impacting the nation’s metabolic and mental health, the adoption of regular physical activity and well-balanced diets has never been more important.

“I chose to study at Salford because I wanted to live in and explore a new area of the UK I’d never been to before. After lots of research and considering university for a couple of years, I took a leap of faith, applied, ended up getting a place in late August and had moved to Salford by the end of September. It’s the best thing I have ever done!

The course is great. It combines the two elements I am most interested in: working with people in a proactive preventative way and using social prescribing to help people to be healthier and lead happier lives. We have various practical modules, which have so far been fun and engaging – I prefer this as it means the course isn’t all assessed by written examinations. There is also an opportunity to undertake a placement in our third year, which I’m really looking forward to!

A real bonus is that, alongside your degree, you also get a personal training qualification. For me, this is great as it allows me to set up my own business when I graduate.

I am learning massage alongside my degree to enhance my skills and help with future development. In addition to this, I have signed up to the university’s volunteering scheme and am looking to do some online cook along sessions for a charity for parents and children.

Once I’ve graduated, I would like to set up my own wellbeing business or work in a medical setting in social prescribing, which is a growing field to work in. I would also like to do my Master’s in Physiotherapy.
