AN EDUCATION LIKE NO OTHER “I chose Johnston because I tend to flourish in communities, and the interdisciplinary environment was exciting to my first-year self. It is everything I could have hoped for and more. I’m surrounded by a beautiful intergenerational community. If you can dream it, you can do it at the Johnston Center.” —Angela Bozman ’25 Flute Performance, Technology, and Leadership
“The Johnston community is incredible. Personally and socially, navigating such a close and passionate community has been wonderful. The academic freedom — from the big picture of creating my own major to the small and intentional choices about how to modify each class I am taking to accommodate my interests — my experience has been profoundly motivating.” —Andries Castellano ’26 Psychology of Masculinities and Access to Mental Health Care
Johnston students call two residence halls home—Bekins and Holt Hall. Inside you will find a coffeehouse, meditation room, computer center, classrooms, art studio, music room, and faculty offices. Up to 200 talented and passionate students make up the Johnston Center, each with their own education goals and connection to community. Through Johnston, you can pursue traditional classes as well as seminars that connect multiple disciplines. In this vibrant community, you debate and challenge ideas with faculty and peers.
When classes end, Johnston students and professors can be found discussing current events, listening to live music, or reading favorite quotes on the Bekins porch. Once a week, the community gathers to exchange dialogue and make decisions through a consensus model.
As a student in Johnston, you shape your own education by crafting your unique emphasis— Johnston’s version of a major.
“I chose Johnston because it provided a great opportunity to learn what I wanted to learn alongside other passionate people with a wide range of interests. I also graduated from high school during the pandemic, so I was attracted to Johnston for the consensus-based communal living situation. Getting to live so close to my friends and participate in the challenges of creating the community we want to live in is one of the great privileges of my undergraduate education.” — Sadie Forkner ’25 Interdisciplinary Writing
“The highlight of my experience with Johnston would be the collective quiet moments spent with friends in our community. Johnston facilitates exploration into their students’ passions, encourages people to expand their views, and helps them find their way. I’m able to pursue interests in both software and Japanese language alongside the general culture.” —Sim Sim ’25 Computer Science Meets Japanese Culture
CREATE YOUR OWN PATH In Johnston, you work alongside dedicated faculty to craft your own course of study. Instead of grades, you’ll create course contracts that highlight your aims for each class and then receive written evaluations that will help you understand how you have achieved your goals for the course. You’ll have a deeper understanding of your chosen emphasis, and an even better understanding of yourself.
