Dear UP students and graduates,
Welcome to the 2026 edition of the Career Services Handbook. This year’s theme, Navigating Your Next Through the Lens of Tomorrow, is an invitation to think differently about your future.
Rather than stressing over having every step planned, I encourage you to imagine the future you want, and then give yourself permission to explore, learn, and grow along the way.
At the University of Pretoria’s Career Services, we believe that your success begins today. The world of work is changing rapidly - new industries, new technologies, new ways of working. To keep pace, you need to be flexible, creative, and willing to take initiative. Whether you are starting your first job or considering a change, approaching your next move with a little foresight will help you feel more confident and prepared.
Looking ahead with purpose: The future is not something to fear or simply dream about – it is something you actively shape. Embracing continuous learning, building resilience, and staying adaptable are key to thriving, no matter what comes your way. Remember, your career is a journey, and you are the one creating it, one step at a time.
Rethinking what it means to be ready for work: Many students ask me, When will I feel ready? Honestly, I think that moment might never come and that is okay. Work readiness is not about having all the answers or feeling 100% confident. It is about being open to learning, asking questions, and stepping into new spaces, even when they feel uncomfortable. Your degree is your foundation, but what truly makes a difference is how you use it –through your experiences, your voice, and your growth.
Ask yourself: what are you doing outside of your studies? Are you gaining new experiences? Building your confidence? Trying things that push you beyond your comfort zone? That is what will set you apart.
Start before you feel ready: Waiting until you feel good enough can hold you back. Confidence is not something you get first - it comes from taking action. Apply for that opportunity. Attend that event. Reach out to someone you admire. Ask questions. The first step is often the hardest, but it is also the most important.
Embracing the pivot: Your career does not have to follow a straight line. You might study one thing and find yourself working in something completely different - and that is perfectly okay. That is growth. The ability to unlearn, learn new skills, and pivot when necessary is one of the most valuable capabilities you can develop. Be intentional, stay reflective, and take ownership of your journey.
Your interests will change, your goals will shift -that is part of the process. The key is not to have everything figured out, but to keep moving forward, keep learning, and keep showing up for yourself.
And remember - you do not have to do it alone. Reach out, ask for help, and seek guidance.
At Career Services, we are here to walk with you on this journey. But ultimately, this is your path – you are the one steering it. The first step is yours to take, and I believe in your ability to shape a future that aligns with your dreams and values.
All the best as you navigate your next.

Thinking about the future can feel both exciting and overwhelming, especially in a fast-changing world where trends and employer expectations continue to evolve. Today, success goes beyond academic achievement. While strong marks are important, students stand out by developing a well-rounded profile that reflects skills, experiences and personal growth. Getting involved in societies, volunteering, part-time work, vacation work, or entrepreneurial ventures helps build valuable capabilities that prepare you for success in the job market.

The key is to be intentional in your approach to your academics and in your interactions with peers, lecturers, companies, and the support services available to you. Securing opportunities requires you to not operate in isolation, but to engage with your community, learn new skills and remain open to unexpected possibilities.
The journey to securing employment is not linear, it looks different for everyone. Planning early, taking charge of your journey, and being present when opportunities arise are crucial steps.
Starting early reduces stress in your final year and gives you time to research, explore and understand the opportunities available. It helps you to decide whether your chosen path is the right one, understand employer expectations and prepare strategically. Early planning also helps you build your personal brand and align your activities with employer expectations.
In addition, South Africa is not the only environment in which you can build a career. Exploring the international job market is equally important. Where there may be limited opportunities locally, other countries may have a high demand for your specific skills.
The journey to securing employment is not linear, it looks different for everyone.
Once you have a clear understanding of what is required, focus on developing your self-awareness. Know your strengths, weaknesses, personality, and understand what motivates you. You can build this self-awareness by making use of Career Services and the Counselling Unit, as well as by taking on roles that stretch you, whether leadership positions, volunteering, or part-time jobs that build soft skills.
Keep an open mind to opportunities in the job market. Employer partners regularly engage with students on campus through various platforms, including career fairs, industry presentations, student societies, and faculty initiatives. It is important to connect with employers you may not be familiar with, as you could be overlooking organisations with innovative programmes that support long-term career growth.
Networking is important. Be deliberate about fostering meaningful relationships with peers, mentors, and professionals. While networks may not always yield immediate benefits, a strong network, where you have built a reliable and respectable brand, has unlimited potential for access to knowledge, opportunities, and support. This is key to securing employment and even more so when developing a career.
Employers are increasingly seeking skilled and adaptable lifelong learners. Beyond qualifications, they value creativity, innovation, and the ability to contribute in diverse ways. Career Services offers access to upskilling platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and TechUP powered by IBM SkillsBuild to help you stay competitive.
Rejection is part of the journey, it is inevitable, but not personal. As you step out of your comfort zone by joining societies, applying for jobs, networking, and developing new skills, challenges will arise. Resilience is what keeps you motivated and focused. Those who succeed are the ones who tried, failed, and kept trying.
In conclusion, preparing for the world of work requires intention, consistency, and a willingness to grow. There is no single formula for success, but students who take ownership of their development, remain open to opportunities, and actively build their skills and networks position themselves strongly for the future. Every experience matters, the decisions you make today will shape the opportunities available tomorrow. Stay curious, stay proactive, and trust the process.

The world of work is not just simply changing. It is being fundamentally reshaped.
Across Africa, technological advancement, demographic shifts, climate pressures, platform work, artificial intelligence and new business models are redefining how value is created and how careers unfold. For students and graduates, this moment can feel uncertain. Yet it is also filled with unprecedented opportunity.
To navigate your next step successfully, you must see your career not as a straight line, but as a dynamic journey that evolves with the future.
THE FUTURE OF WORK IN AFRICA: COMPLEXITY AND OPPORTUNITY
Africa is the youngest continent in the world and it is rapidly digitising. Mobile connectivity, fintech innovation, AI adoption, remote work, platform economies and green transitions are transforming industries from agriculture to financial services.
Three powerful forces are shaping this landscape:
1
Technological acceleration:
Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and data analytics are redefining tasks within jobs. Technology does not simply eliminate work, it redesigns it.
2
Entrepreneurial ecosystems: Innovation hubs in Nairobi, Lagos and Cape Town are driving digital solutions for African challenges. Entrepreneurship is increasingly a deliberate career choice.
3
Societal transformation: Climate adaptation, inequality and social justice are influencing how organisations operate. The future workforce must balance profitability with sustainability and ethical responsibility.
The question is no longer What job will you get? but rather What capabilities will you build?
Degrees remain important. But what distinguishes graduates is not only what they know, but how they apply it.
Digital fluency:
You do not need to be a programmer unless your field requires it. But you do need to understand how AI tools, data systems and digital platforms influence your industry.
Critical thinking and systems awareness: Africa’s challenges are complex and interconnected. Employers value graduates who can interpret data, see patterns and understand broader systems.
Adaptability and learning agility: The average person will change roles and even industries multiple times. Success depends on reskilling quickly, staying curious and embracing change.
Human-centred capabilities:
As AI grows, human skills become more valuable. Empathy, communication, ethical judgement, creativity and collaboration cannot easily be automated. These capabilities differentiate you in an AI-augmented workplace.
1
The traditional model of studying, graduating and staying in one profession for decades is fading. Instead, think of your career as a portfolio that may include:
• Formal employment
• Freelance or consulting work
• Entrepreneurship or side ventures
• Further study or micro-credentials
• Community or social impact projects
Career agility means intentionally developing transferable skills that move with you across contexts.
This requires three practices:
1
Continuous scanning: Stay informed about industry trends, technological developments and emerging sectors.
2
Intentional skill stacking: Combine complementary skills (Finance + data analytics. Engineering + sustainability. Communication + AI literacy).
3
Network cultivation: Opportunities increasingly flow through ecosystems rather than advertisements. Relationships matter.
Lifelong learning is no longer optional
In a world of rapid technological change, education does not end at graduation.
Micro-credentials, short courses, professional certifications, online platforms and experiential learning will all form part of your ongoing development. Employers hire for adaptability and potential, not just static knowledge.
Learning should become a habit, not a phase.
As you prepare for your next step, ask yourself:
• How digitally literate am I within my field?
• What problems do I want to solve, especially in an African context?
• What skills will remain valuable even if my job evolves?
• How comfortable am I with uncertainty and change?
• Am I building relationships that expand my opportunities?
The future of work in Africa is not predetermined. It will be shaped by those who participate in it.
You are not merely preparing to enter the workforce, you are preparing to influence it.
If you approach your career with curiosity, courage, ethical responsibility and a commitment to lifelong growth, you will not simply navigate tomorrow’s world of work, you will help design it.

To prepare for future careers and stay competitive in an AI-driven world, students and graduates need to strengthen their human-centred skills that remain valuable regardless of how technology evolves. The world has moved into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has become a bigger part of the job market, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the development of essential human skills. While AI excels at automated processes, works fast and can perform tasks that were traditionally performed by humans, it lacks the human aspects that create meaningful work and collaboration. Whether studying Psychology, Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine or Education, long-term employability depends on the development of core skills that matter with or without AI. These skills include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, emotional intelligence and communication skills.

Human skills, also known as power skills, are non-cognitive skills, attributes and behaviours that help people interact well with others, adapt to the changing environment and achieve personal and professional goals. AI can process data, but it cannot fully comprehend emotions or build connections with clients or customers. For this reason, students and graduates are encouraged to develop these skills through:
1 2 3
Actively engaging in experiences that challenge creativity, communication, collaboration and problem-solving.
Participate in group projects, volunteering and vacation work or internship opportunities to practice teamwork, critical thinking and problemsolving in real-life scenarios.
Completing short online courses on platforms such as LinkedIn Learning can help strengthen ethical reasoning, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, making graduates more adaptable in a technology-driven world.

Creativity: Creativity remains a highly valued skill because it enables individuals to generate and initiate valuable ideas or solutions that are relevant to complex problems. Employers value creativity as it demonstrates the ability to contribute fresh ideas, solve real-world problems with originality and express emotions and identity in a meaningful way. In most fields, impactful ideas and innovations come from human creativity.
Critical Thinking: Employers seek students and graduates who can think independently, analyse information carefully and make well-reasoned decisions. Critical thinkers minimise errors, ask the right questions and find efficient solutions. This skill is attractive in workplaces that deal with complex data, diverse opinions and changing environments.
Collaboration or Teamwork: Most jobs require teamwork and employers value candidates who can collaborate effectively. Regardless of the department or role, collaboration determines how smoothly a project progresses. Students and graduates who demonstrate strong teamwork skills make workplaces more productive, positive and efficient. Employers want individuals who can build trust, share responsibilities, communicate respectfully and contribute to group success.
Communication: Clear communication is one of the most sought-after skills because it supports teamwork. Employers value strong communicators who can explain ideas clearly, listen actively and work well with colleagues, clients and customers. Strong communication prevents misunderstandings, improves teamwork and helps organisations deliver quality services. Whether writing reports, presenting findings, or communicating day to day, students and graduates who communicate well minimise misunderstandings and demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and collaboration.
Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence is increasingly valued as workplaces become more dynamic. Students and graduates who can manage their emotions, effectively respond to others’ feelings, and adapt to interpersonal challenges are better equipped to navigate workplace dynamics. Developing emotional intelligence skills helps foster teamwork, navigate human dynamics, communicate effectively and lead with compassion. These qualities lead to better teamwork and fewer workplace conflicts, ultimately improving productivity.
Ethical Reasoning: Employers highly value ethical reasoning because it demonstrates integrity, responsibility and good judgment. Employers value people who can make sound decisions, follow organisational values, handle confidential information and protect the organisation’s reputation. Students and graduates who demonstrate ethical reasoning are seen as trustworthy, reliable and capable of carrying out important tasks without compromising the organisation.

For many students, leadership feels like something reserved for the future, a role you step into once you have graduated, secured a job and earned a title. The reality is far more empowering: leadership begins now, during your time on campus. Choosing to lead as a student may be one of the most strategic career decisions you can make.
As the world of work grows more complex, interconnected and valuesdriven, employers are no longer only asking what you studied. They want to know who you are, how you work with others and what responsibility you are prepared to take on. Student leadership provides answers to all of these questions long before your first job interview.
The reality is far more empowering: leadership begins now, during your time on campus.

Student leadership is where potential turns into practice. It is one of the few spaces where you are entrusted with real responsibility while still being supported in your learning. Whether in student governance, societies, residences or project teams, leadership requires you to show up consistently, make decisions, follow through and manage the consequences.
This is where transferable skills are developed in real time. You learn leadership by leading: facilitating discussions, managing projects, responding to challenges and reflecting on your impact. You build self-awareness by observing how others respond to your communication and decisions. You sharpen your time management as you balance academics with commitments that do not pause when deadlines loom. You learn collaboration not as a theory but as a necessity, because nothing meaningful in leadership happens alone.
For employers, leadership experience reveals qualities that academic records alone cannot. It signals that you have already navigated responsibility, uncertainty and accountability in realworld settings. It suggests exposure to decision-making under pressure, working with diverse stakeholders, managing conflict and contributing to organisational processes.
Graduates with leadership experience often enter the workplace with greater confidence and adaptability. They are more comfortable engaging in conversations, taking initiative and understanding how their role fits within a larger system. In competitive recruitment contexts, leadership can meaningfully distinguish candidates with similar qualifications. It helps employers see not only what you know, but how you are likely to engage, contribute and grow within the organisation.
These are the skills that travel with you into any career, across industries and sectors. Long after technical knowledge evolves, these capabilities remain relevant.
It helps employers see not only what you know, but how you are likely to engage, contribute and grow within the organisation.

Many thriving professionals trace aspects of their development back to early leadership experiences. Not because those roles guaranteed success, but because they offered opportunities to learn quickly and meaningfully.
Former student leaders often reflect on how representing others, working within governance structures or leading initiatives built their confidence to speak up, take responsibility and engage constructively in complex environments. These lessons have informed careers across sectors, from business and consulting to public service, education, entrepreneurship and civil society.
What connects these journeys is not the specific role held, but the learning it enabled: leading without formal authority, recovering from mistakes and balancing conviction with humility. These lessons continue to shape professional growth long after graduation.

carry consequences and contribute beyond personal benefit.
These lessons continue to shape professional growth long after graduation.
Employers do not only hire qualifications, they hire evidence. They look for the proof behind the paper: skills you can apply under pressure, qualities that hold when unsupervised and a temperament that remains steady when the stakes are high. They seek initiative, but also maturity: the ability to collaborate without ego, to lead without force and to take responsibility without applause.
Increasingly, what separates a graduate who is merely ready from one who is genuinely future-fit goes beyond competence. It is the recognition that you have invested yourself in something bigger than your own success, that you have learned to build with others,
Leadership participation becomes that visible marker, not because it makes you perfect, but because it shows you have been shaped by responsibility and sharpened by service.
In a world where organisations need people who can build trust, navigate relationships and move collective outcomes forward, leadership is not a nice addition to your CV. It is a quiet declaration of who you are becoming.
So here is the question worth asking: if two candidates have the same degree, the same marks and the same technical ability, why should an employer choose the one who never stepped beyond themselves?

At the University of Pretoria (UP), students are prepared not only for careers that will take them to the top of their respective fields, but also to become innovative thinkers who can identify market gaps and develop solutions that improve society. Entrepreneurship is a skill actively nurtured at UP, with TuksNovation, the University’s technology business incubator, and Hustle UP, UP’s flagship student entrepreneurship programme, playing central roles.

Founded in 2017 as a non-profit company fully owned by UP, TuksNovation provides specialised product and business development support to start-ups. In just a few years, it has already produced several success stories, helping entrepreneurs refine technologies, validate their business models and
commercialise innovations into sustainable businesses with social and economic impact.
Given South Africa’s high unemployment rate, it is increasingly important for young people to look beyond traditional employment pathways and consider entrepreneurship as a viable option. Graduate unemployment remains high due to a mismatch between skills produced and market demand, with universities producing graduates faster than the economy can absorb them.
A start-up is a young, innovative company designed to develop a unique product or service, aiming for rapid growth and scalability. While often techfocused, start-ups can be based on any innovative idea that serves a clear market need.

UP students and graduates are supported by TuksNovation through a structured business incubation process to help them build successful start-up businesses. By hosting innovation challenges, webinars and bootcamps, TuksNovation provides access to workshops led by experts in entrepreneurship and innovation. These cover a wide range of topics, from harnessing and protecting intellectual property (IP) to exploring available funding mechanisms.
In line with its focus on supporting business launch and growth, TuksNovation’s incubation programme follows a three-stage approach: technology and business model development, business launch and commercialisation, and business growth.
Recognising that each venture may be at different stage in its life cycle, the programme tailors its support to meet the specific needs of individual start-up.
Starting a new business can feel daunting, but with the right support the journey becomes less intimidating. Since many students may not have prior exposure to the world of business and entrepreneurship, access to relevant tools and expertise is critical to improving their of success.

As students prepare to transition from university into the world of work, one of the most important questions they face is not just What’s next? but How do I prepare for what comes after that? In a rapidly evolving world, success is no longer defined solely by academic achievement, but by adaptability, exposure, and the ability to make informed career decisions early on.
The Final-Year Mentorship Programme is designed with exactly this in mind: to equip students with the tools, networks, and real-world insights they need to navigate their next step with confidence, while keeping their long-term future firmly in focus.

The Final-Year Mentorship Programme connects students with industry professionals who provide guidance, support, and practical insight into their chosen career paths. Through these structured relationships, mentees gain exposure to workplace realities, industry expectations, and the skills required to succeed beyond university.
A key highlight of the programme is the Final-Year Bootcamp, a two-day immersive experience that brings together students, employers, and industry experts. The bootcamp is intentionally designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional readiness. Through workshops, panel discussions, networking sessions, and practical training, students engage directly with the world they are preparing to enter.
During the bootcamp, students gain exposure to:
• Industry trends and future-focused career insights
• Practical workplace skills such as communication, professionalism, and personal branding
• Employer expectations and recruitment processes
• Networking opportunities with potential employers and professionals
This experience builds confidence and encourages students to think critically about their career trajectories and how current choices shape future outcomes.
Mentorship plays a critical role in positioning students for long-term career success. While academic knowledge provides a strong foundation, mentorship adds real-world context that cannot be replicated in the classroom.
Through mentorship, students benefit from:
• Personalised guidance: Mentors help students refine their career goals, offering advice tailored to their interests and strengths.
• Industry exposure: Students gain insider perspectives on their chosen fields, helping them better understand workplace dynamics and expectations.
• Professional networks: Mentorship opens doors to connections that can lead to opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, and employment.
• Confidence building: Regular engagement with professionals helps students develop confidence in their abilities and decision-making.
Mentorship encourages students to adopt a future-oriented mindset, thinking beyond immediate opportunities and considering how each step contributes to their long-term growth.

Building on this success, the programme has evolved in 2026 with a strong focus on scalability, accessibility, and innovation. Digitisation has allowed more efficient management and broader reach, ensuring more students benefit from mentorship opportunities, regardless of logistical constraints.
New initiatives, such as the Workplace Mentorship Initiative, deepen engagement with real-world environments and provide structured exposure to professional settings. These developments reflect a commitment to keeping the programme relevant in an ever-changing world of work.
As you navigate your academic journey, it is important to recognise that every decision you make today contributes to your future career path. Mentorship is not just about immediate benefits, it is about building a foundation for long-term success.
By connecting with professionals, gaining practical experience, and developing critical skills, you position yourself as a proactive, future-ready graduate.
Students are encouraged to sign up for the 2027 Final-Year Mentorship Programme. Whether you seek clarity on your career path, want to build your professional network, or aim to gain practical experience, the programme provides a supportive and enriching platform to help you achieve your goals.
Your career does not begin after graduation, it starts now. By taking intentional steps today, you can navigate your next with purpose, confidence, and a clear vision for tomorrow.

Your career journey at the University of Pretoria is about more than lectures and exams. It is about building a bridge from the academic world to the professional future. Who are the essential architects of that bridge? Employer partners. Meaningful engagement with these organisations goes far beyond offering a list of job openings, it is about actively shaping careers to be future-ready.

Think of a career path not as a predetermined road, but as a landscape to be navigated. Employer engagement provides the tools for that journey. The relationships cultivated with leading organisations across industries give students direct access to insights that define the world of work.
Career fairs are positioned as dynamic, strategic platforms where exceptional talent meets genuine opportunity. With a growing diversity of participating organisations, from finance and technology to engineering, healthcare and the public sector, these events offer a real-time snapshot of the economy.
Each conversation with a company representative, recruiter or industry experts, is a chance to interpret the evolving workplace. What skills are being emphasised this year? How are organisations responding to technological change? The trends heard repeatedly are the ones shaping the future. Employers attend career fairs because they believe in the calibre and potential of University of Pretoria talent. They are not simply there to share information or collect CVs, they are actively engaging with students to identify future professionals who can contribute meaningfully to their organisations.
Career fairs are positioned as dynamic, strategic platforms where exceptional talent meets genuine opportunity.
In an increasingly competitive market, standing out requires strategy, not just charisma. Career fairs should be seen as strategic career-building platforms rather than routine networking opportunities. The aim is to engage in meaningful conversations that go beyond what is possible online, allowing students to demonstrate value, motivation and professional intent in person.
Preparation is what places students in control. Before attending, it is important to move beyond the About Us page and research a company’s Employer Value Proposition (EVP)—its promise to employees regarding culture, growth and innovation. For example, if a company highlights innovation and human-AI collaboration, a thoughtful question might be: I read about your focus on AI collaboration. How might a new graduate use AI as a creative partner in this role? This demonstrates strategic thinking and alignment with the organisation’s vision.
Authenticity is equally important. Employer’s value genuine interest and are drawn to candidates who can clearly articulate their passions and career aspirations. Enthusiasm paired with preparedness is compelling. Effective
engagement requires thoughtful questions and active listening.
The interaction continues after the event. Securing a business card, noting key points from the discussion and sending a personalised thank you email or a connection request on LinkedIn within 24 hours helps solidify the professional relationship. This follow-up step, often overlooked, can make a lasting impression.

The guiding theme, Navigating your next step through the lens of tomorrow, encourages students to align today’s actions with tomorrow’s job market. Employer partners provide direct insight into emerging trends, from technological innovation to evolving workplace expectations. These conversations offer actionable intelligence that helps students tailor their skill development strategically. By assessing a company’s future-readiness now, students gain an advantage in identifying employers who will invest in their growth and long-term employability.
Your journey, your advantage
Engaging with employer partners is one of the most powerful forms of career preparation available. It transforms the uncertainty of the future of work into a tangible landscape of opportunities. Career Services provides the map—the events, the access and the platform, but students remain in control of their journey. Starting early, attending career fairs and industry presentations and returning each year with sharper questions and clearer goals ensures steady progress.
Every interaction refines a student’s understanding of career direction and
professional identity. The next chapter begins with proactive engagement: exploring upcoming events, researching employer partners and preparing not just for a job, but for a career that thrives on the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

The University of Pretoria’s (UP) Career Services Office hosted its first-ever Client Appreciation Gala Dinner on 7 November 2025, a milestone event that celebrated the partnerships helping students and graduates take confident steps into the world of work.

The theme was Celebrating Partnerships, Empowering Futures, and the evening brought together employer partners, alumni mentors, faculties, departments and university leadership, who all continue to play an important role in creating opportunities for UP students. Guests included the UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Francis Petersen, the UP Registrar, Professor Caroline Nicholson, deans, directors and key stakeholders from industry and academia.
Being more than a celebration, the gala demonstrated the continuous work done by Career Services throughout the year to build meaningful, long-term relationships with employers and partners; relationships that ultimately benefit students by means of career fairs, mentorship opportunities, workshops, internships, graduate programmes and professional development initiatives.
One of the memorable moments of the evening was the launch of the inaugural Career Services Client Appreciation Awards, celebrating employer partners and faculties that have made an exceptional contribution to student development and employability.
• Career Fair Champion Award: PwC
• Internal Stakeholder/Faculty Engagement Award: Faculty of Veterinary Science
• Students’ Choice Award, selected from more than 250 participating companies: Investec

These awards not only recognised excellence in partnership, but also highlighted the organisations students value most for their engagement, accessibility and commitment to graduate development.
In his keynote address, Prof Petersen spoke about the importance of collaboration in UP’s future vision and encouraged partners to continue building impactful relationships that go beyond recruitment.
Our new strategy will position UP as a global institution, providing outputs in all forms
for Africa, with Africa and with the world, he said. We must build richer relationships on the strong foundation we already have.
The Assistant Director of Career Services, Ms Michele Le Grange, highlighted the collective effort behind the unit’s growing impact on student employability.
The milestones we celebrate today are not achieved alone. she said. They are made possible through partnerships with faculties, employers, alumni mentors and everyone
who believes in preparing students for meaningful careers.
As Career Services continues to grow its network of partnerships and opportunities, the gala dinner served as a reminder that student success is built through collaboration. When universities and industry work together, students and graduates are the ones who benefit most.

For many students, graduation can feel like the final destination. The focus is often on passing exams, submitting assignments and making it to graduation day. In reality, graduation marks the start of a new phase that requires just as much preparation, sometimes more. Thinking ahead and intentionally preparing for the world of work can make the transition from student to professional smoother and purposeful.
Not every graduate moves seamlessly into postgraduate studies or employment after completing their qualifications. Some students continue with Honours degrees, while others enter the job market, however, not everyone secures a place or position immediately. This makes it crucial for students and graduates to begin planning their next step early and strategically.
Many students focus mainly on academic responsibilities and financial pressures, such as tuition fees or allowances, leaving career planning for later. However, graduates entering the workforce often face significant challenges such as unemployment, limited work experience and uncertainty about workplace expectations. This underscores the importance of proactive career navigation, which involves more than submitting job applications. It requires deliberate preparation,
skill development, and effective use of the support structures available.
A key challenge for both students and graduates is the gap between academic learning and essential workplace skills. Employers increasingly look for transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, problemsolving, professionalism and digital literacy. These skills are developed not only in academic settings but also through participation in group projects, presentations, leadership roles, volunteering and structured work-readiness programmes. Early development of these skills equips students with practical capabilities that strengthens employability.
Support structures at the university, particularly the Career Services division, plays an important role in preparing students
for the transition into the workplace. Career Services offers guidance on CV development, tailoring job applications, writing cover letters and preparing for interviews. They also run workshops on professional communication, job-search strategies and career planning. Students who do not make use of these resources often miss valuable opportunities and enter the job market less prepared.
Career Services also play a critical role in connecting students and graduates with internship and graduate placement opportunities. These opportunities provide students with practical experience and exposure to professional environments, allowing students to apply what they have learned, develop workplace skills and gain insights into career paths. By actively engaging with these opportunities, students can gain work experience, professional references, and industry exposure, which increases the likelihood of securing permanent employment.
Securing an internship or entry-level role is an important milestone, but it should also be seen as the beginning of a professional growth rather than the final goal. Preparing for recruitment processes, including applications, interviews and assessments, is critical. Career Services offers mock interviews and career-readiness sessions to help students build confidence, articulate their strengths and understand employer expectations. This preparation is critical in giving graduates a competitive edge in the job market.
Interview preparation is often underestimated, yet it plays a major role in securing employment. Career Services Offices provide valuable support through interview preparation sessions and mock interviews. Once a graduate secures their first role, a new set of challenges emerges. Understanding workplace culture, meeting etiquette, professional communication and dress codes can be overwhelming. Professionalism in the workplace goes beyond qualifications, it is reflected in behaviour, attitude and presentation both in person and online.
The transition from student to graduate requires planning, foresight, and active engagement. Building transferable skills, using Career Services support, and participating in internships or graduate placement programmes equips graduates to enter the workforce with confidence, purpose and a competitive advantage. Preparing for tomorrow begins while still at university and the steps taken now can shape confidence, opportunities, and long-term career success.

When I graduated from the University of Pretoria with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, I did not have a perfectly mapped-out career plan. What I did have was curiosity and a desire to understand systems, why they work, who they serve and who they leave behind. That curiosity has shaped every step of my journey.

From stepping into public life as Miss South Africa and advocating for mental health, to serving as UNFPA’s Regional Champion for East and Southern Africa and now Global Champion for Women and Girls, each chapter has taught me responsibility, communication, and how to use visibility with intention. Alongside this, I founded the Shudufhadzo Foundation and Masana Group, creating spaces where advocacy meets execution. Today, I am completing a STEM-designated Master of Public Administration at Columbia University, strengthening the economic and financial tools needed to operate at an institutional scale.
Looking back, studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics gave me a systems lens and saying yes to responsibility early forced growth. Returning to graduate school gave me technical depth to match conviction. I have learned that long-term growth comes from pairing courage with preparation.
To students and graduates navigating uncertainty, my advice is simple: you do not need to have everything figured out. What you need is discipline, curiosity, consistency, competence, and relationships. Careers are not linear, they are layered. Navigating your next through the lens of tomorrow means choosing today with tomorrow in mind, investing in education when shortcuts are available and building skills over seeking applause.

Since graduating from the University of Pretoria, my career has evolved from national and international pageantry into a multi-faceted role as a fashion model, medial personality and public figure. Representing South Africa on global stages and collaborating with leading brands has allowed me to build a career defined by impact, representation and leadership.
Looking back, the best decisions I made were choosing courage over comfort and investing in myself beyond immediate outcomes. Pursuing education alongside a demanding public career, embracing opportunities that stretched me beyond a single identity and remaining open to reinvention all shaped my growth.
I have learned that authenticity is not a limitation, it is a compass. Staying grounded in who I am and what I stand for has enable me to adapt with clarity, build trust and pivot across industries. Discipline, adaptability and a strong sense of purpose have guided me, while values of integrity and continuous growth have sustained credibility across different spaces.
I now approach career planning as a living process rather than a fixed roadmap. Alignment matters more than predictability, and I remain intentional about continuous learning, the rooms I enter and the decisions I make for long-term impact.
I encourage students to trust the season they are in and not rush to have everything figured out. Use this time to explore, gain skills beyond the classroom and remember that uncertainty is where growth, clarity and opportunity are forged. For me, navigating your next through the lens of tomorrow means making present-day decisions with foresight and authenticity, trusting that each step prepares me for what is next.

My journey into entrepreneurship began out of necessity. After completing my master’s degree, I returned home with hopes of securing employment. I applied for several positions, but none worked out. At the same time, life became more demanding, I had a young child to care for and my mother was battling stage IV cancer. Medical bills were rising and the weight of responsibility became very real, very quickly.
It was a difficult season, one that forced me to rethink everything I thought my path would look like. With limited resources, I searched for opportunities that required little or no capital but could generate meaningful returns. That search led me to Favour Giants, a zero-waste rabbit farming venture in Kirinyaga County that empowers women and youth by creating sustainable income through rabbit production.
Challenges
One of the hardest phases was the silent growth stage. The business was generating
some income but was far from stable. It was a season of uncertainty, where resilience was tested daily.
As demand for rabbit meat grew, supply lagged behind. To meet market needs, we expanded our network by recruiting more farmers, starting locally and extending into Kirinyaga and Embu counties. We used radio, social media and community outreach to attract participants.
Another challenge was fragmentation, most farmers kept only a few rabbits, making aggregation difficult. To solve
this, we mapped farmers by location, clustering production to reduce costs and inefficiencies. Along the way, we realised many young people were eager to work but lacked structured opportunities. We began onboarding youth through starter packs, training and mentorship, providing rabbits at subsidised rates and buying them back once mature. This evolving model has helped close the demand-supply gap while creating sustainable pathways for youth and women.

We have directly supported over 50 women and youth farmers and reached more than 200 others through online training and mentorship. We partnered with a local school through a farm-for-fees initiative that generates income, equips learners with entrepreneurial skills and eases financial pressure on parents. Our main farm has grown to over 500 rabbits, supplying butcheries and households while introducing regenerative farming practices. The work has gained traction with media and agricultural institutions, further validating its impact.
My journey has been shaped by lived experience, education and networks. Growing up in an agricultural background gave me practical insight into farming. My degrees in Computer Science (BSc) and Project Management (MSc) trained me to think in systems, structure ideas and manage complex initiatives.
Equally important has been the exposure and networks gained through the University of Pretoria and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme. Today, I build alongside a team of alumni whose diverse expertise, ranging from agribusiness and food science to technology, allows us to combine agriculture, innovation and systems
thinking. The values instilled through these institutions, leadership, entrepreneurship, design thinking and community impact, guide not only how we build Favour Giants, but why we build it.
My advice is simple: just start. Even if you are uncertain, take the first step. Do not fear humble beginnings, growth takes time, resilience and patience. Share your work proudly, use social media intentionally and remain open to opportunities. Once you begin, doors will open. For us, rabbit farming has expanded into organic farming, regenerative agriculture and even possibilities in fashion and hospitality. Opportunities do not end, they multiply.
My advice is simple: just start. Even if you are uncertain, take the first step.

I joined the University of Pretoria in 2018. Looking back now, I could’ve never imagined how life would play out for me. In 2018, coming from a village named Luka in Rustenburg, Pretoria was a big culture shock and quickly exposed me to so much. I spent my first year being exposed to so many experiences and people from different walks of life, cultures and beliefs. Though often overwhelming, because of where I come from, I found and experienced such depths of beauty and joy in it all. However, in the midst of that joy and beauty, there was a constant grief that weighed heavily on my heart that I couldn’t shake, the smell of injustice around me was so pungent. Late NSFAS payments, causing us to live in fear if we will be able to survive the coming month, seeing some students spending nights in the Library, not because they were studying, but because they had no other place to sleep. Seeing students having to drop their studies because of defunding and institutional exclusion. It is through this grief and witnessing of injustice that my passion for people, activism and leadership was birthed.
I went on to join the Progressive Youth Alliance on campus, namely the South
African Students Congress (SASCO) and the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) which I led from 2019-2021. In 2019, I was then elected onto the university’s Student Representative Council (SRC) as the Deputy Secretary. Then, in 2021, I served as the first elected woman to be SRC President at the University of Pretoria. Being a member of SASCO and the ANCYL on campus really shaped and deepened my activism which allowed us to govern and lead with consciousness. Alongside the activism and leadership, I completed my Honours in Political Science in 2021, I also hold a Masters in Development Studies with Economics and currently pursuing my PhD.
My holistic experience on campus, the activism, governance and education, really gave me the relevant skills and experience for where I find myself today. I currently lead the Research, Communications and Stakeholder Relations at the OR Tambo School of Leadership. Actively participating in shaping and building the kind of leadership we need to attain the socio-economic change we need in this country and continent.

University is not JUST for your degree! The mistake that many make when they come to University is to just focus on getting the degree, going to class and going back to Res. Please, do not do yourself this injustice. We know the unfortunately high youth unemployment statistics of the country, and a lot of those unemployed youth have degrees and qualifications. This shows us that a degree alone gives no guarantee. Therefore, do not waste your opportunity on campus, build relationships with the relevant people, shake hands, attend seminars/ workshops relevant to the space you want to see yourself go into in the future. Use the available resources such as the career guidance services, Ready for Work programme and CV Building Seminars on campus which really helped to join the job market. Form part of societies and be an active citizen on campus who serves others, this gives purpose and direction. The greatest injustice would be if you leave campus and the ONLY thing you left with was a certificate and a graduation gown. Leave with a degree and a highly developed self in every way. All of this activity and self-development does contribute increases your chances of employability and a purpose filled life.

You may be smarter, faster, stronger than me, but you will not outwork me
I am a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Statistics graduate and a current Bachelor of Science Honours in Mathematical Statistics student. My journey has been filled with challenges, but one constant has been my commitment to improvement. I have learnt to block out comparison, focus on my progress and embrace authenticity as the key to success.
In my first year, I discovered the GradStar Top100 programme and thought, Why not me?. That mindset pushed me to work harder, not for recognition, but to make success feel attainable. In 2025, I kicked off the year with a Procter & Gamble internship, which deepened my love for statistics and its workplace applications. I then joined the Career Services Mentorship Programme, which helped me refine my professional image and opened doors through initiatives like Ready for Work and the Night of Networking.
When the GradStar opportunity came, I felt prepared. Being selected among the Top Ten taught me that I am capable, deserving, and strongest when I remain my authentic self. The exposure was invaluable, meeting peers from across South Africa and engaging with leaders from diverse industries broadened my perspective and inspired me further.
Looking ahead, I plan to complete my Honours and Masters, equipping myself to enter the corporate world. My aspiration is to contribute to Research and Development, pioneering new ways to apply statistics and analysis to complex challenges. The mentorship and Career Services programmes have been pivotal in shaping this path, reminding me that success is built on hard work, authenticity, and seizing opportunities.

After completing my degree, I engaged with the University of Pretoria’s Career Services to prepare for the world of work. I attended employability workshops focused on CV writing, interview preparation, and drafting strong cover letters, which helped me present my technical skills and academic projects effectively. The personalised support I received was invaluable. The team helped refine my CV to a professional standard, while guiding me through mock interviews, helping me manage nerves and articulate my strengths with confidence.
During discouraging moments in my job search, they reminded me that I deserve to work in a field that I studied in. That encouragement reignited my belief in my journey and motivated me to persist.
With strengthened preparation and consistent effort, I secured an Engineer in Training position at Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd.
This achievement represents more than employment, it reflects growth, resilience, and the impact of support. I am deeply grateful to Career Services for equipping me with tools, confidence and encouragement. I strongly recommend that students engage with Career Services and consistently, as their initiatives truly bridge the gap between academic achievement and professional success.

2025 was my final year and as an aspirant engineer I was determined to prepare myself for the transition into the professional world.
I joined the Final-Year Mentorship Programme and attended the Career Fair at Rautenbach Hall in May 2025, eager to learn more about engineering companies, gain exposure to the working environment and build meaningful connections.
The networking event pushed me out of my comfort zone, giving me the chance to engage with industry experts. These engagements taught me the importance of tailoring my CV to each job description, polishing my LinkedIn profile and approaching my career with a clear plan. Meeting my mentor in person was a highlight and their guidance helped me enhance my applications and gain confidence in my skills.
At first, I struggled to secure interviews, but after restructuring my CV with advice from Career Services, opportunities began to open up. During vacation work, lead engineers were impressed with my work, which gave me hope and strengthened my belief that I can thrive in any organisation. I also learned that success requires more than academic knowledge, but also soft skills. This includes being curious and interested in learning and being able to ask for help or clarity where there is an ambiguity.
These experiences shaped me not only as an aspiring mechanical engineer but also as a professional ready to contribute to society. Career fairs, the mentorship programmes and industry presentations provided insights and exposed me to the practical expectations of the industry and the importance of adaptability beyond technical knowledge. I now approach my career with confidence, focusing on gaining relevant experience and developing both technical and soft skills.

Participating in the Career Services Mentorship Programme was one of the most impactful experiences of my academic journey. At a time when academic pressure felt overwhelming and uncertainty clouded my future, my mentor became a source of clarity, encouragement and direction.
The programme provided a safe space to ask questions, reflect honestly on challenges and explore career paths aligned with my strengths. My mentor helped me realise that feeling overwhelmed was not failure, it was growth. What made the experience exceptional was his genuine commitment to my success. Beyond sharing his own insights, he connected me with professionals already established in the career path I aspire to, giving me real-world perspectives on industry expectations and progression.
Through mentorship, I gained confidence, improved decision-making and gained an understanding of career pathways. I also learned to manage pressure with resilience and to focus on progress rather than perfection. The most impactful advice I received was to focus on progress, not perfection, and trust that consistency will open doors. This shifted how I approached both my studies and career search, allowing me to move forward with courage instead of fear.
As I continue to seek opportunities, I carry these lessons with me. The mentorship programme taught me that success is not achieved alone and that asking for support is a strength. To students uncertain about their next steps, I strongly recommend joining the programme, it offers guidance, emotional support and exposure to realities that can change how you see yourself and your future.

After completing my MBA at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in 2025, I felt a strong need to give back to the University of Pretoria and signed up to become a mentor. My journey had shown me the importance of mentorship, after graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2000, I struggled to find opportunities until mentors helped me build confidence and direction.
Through the mentorship programme, I was paired with Faiz Ayob, a brilliant energetic young man whose passion for Economics and Banking resonated deeply with mine. From the start, I could see his strengths and potential, and he consistently stayed a step ahead in our engagements. His professionalism and planning skills made every session meaningful, and I found myself learning from him as much as he learned from me.
Mentoring Faiz has been a privilege. His dedication gives me great hope for the future of South Africa, and the experience reaffirmed my commitment to enabling others to reach their fullest potential. I am grateful to the University of Pretoria for this opportunity and proud to have played a role in shaping the next generation of leaders.

The Career Services Mentorship Programme gave me the opportunity to mentor students who were seeking clarity in their career pathways. I was able to help them refine their CVs, present their skills more effectively and understand the importance of building networks and drawing
Ramsha Majeed
inspiration from others. The highlight was making an impact using my experience to support students while connecting with them on the challenges they face when choosing their future direction.
One of the most important lessons was the value of observation, looking at what other students and graduates are doing, to not only seek inspiration but also build network with them and determine if such career paths would interest the mentees. Many students hesitate to pursue their passions due to fear of rejection or lack of industry insight and mentorship helps bridge that gap.
As a lecturer and overseer of a student run organisation, I host workshops on job applications and cover letters. Extending these insights through mentorship allowed me to reach students more personally. Guidance is essential at every stage of life, and mentees should take advantage of the programme by asking questions and using it as an opportunity to grow.
Mentorship is a two way relationship. Mentors also learn from mentees, and the experience is deeply rewarding, especially when you see a student succeed because of your support. Sharing our experiences is not just helpful, it is necessary. It enables students to do better, succeed and build confidence in their own journeys. For mentors, it is equally fulfilling, you gain fresh perspectives, strengthen your own leadership skills and contribute to shaping the next generation.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the University of Pretoria for the opportunity to embark on my internship journey at Public Service Sector Education and Training Authority (PSETA). This experience has been key in shaping my personal and professional growth. I joined PSETA as a graduate with mostly theoretical knowledge and I was soon immersed in a supportive environment that gave me a deeper understanding of the public sector.
Working at PSETA pushed me beyond my comfort zone and helped me discover capabilities I did not know I had. I learned to take ownership of tasks, work independently and embrace teamwork and service excellence. One of the most impactful moments of my journey was being entrusted with managing a New Venture Creation Learnership, an opportunity that marked a significant milestone in my career development.
The PSETA team treated us interns as part of the family, offering mentorship, guidance and trust that unlocked my potential. Their support allowed me to grow in confidence and professional identity, and I will carry these lessons forward throughout my career.
This internship has truly unleashed the best in me, for the opportunity, mentorship and belief in my abilities, I will remain forever grateful.

Designers and manufacturers of advanced mineral processing equipment that improves recovery, efficiency, and reliability across operations.

Securing an internship was not an easy journey. Like many students, I spent months applying, revising my CV and writing motivation letters, often facing rejection or silence. At times, I questioned my capabilities and wondered if my efforts would ever be rewarded.
Just as I was losing hope, Career Services at the University of Pretoria reached out. That moment reminded me of the importance of support networks and how opportunities often arrive when least expected. With their guidance, I was placed in the Postgraduate International Enrolment unit within Administration.
This internship became a turning point in both my personal and professional life. I was challenged to improve my communication, value of accuracy, teamwork and service excellence. Exposure to international postgraduate processes broadened my perspective and highlighted the importance of administration in shaping students’ academic journeys.
Most importantly, the experience restored my confidence. It taught me resilience, patience, and the value of seeking and accepting support. I am deeply grateful to Career Services for believing in me and opening this door.
My story is a reminder to other students that rejection is not the end. Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity and the right people to change the course of your life.
