Orientation programme and official start of the academic year for first-year students

2019

Message from the Dean: Mamelodi Campus Welcome to the Mamelodi Campus of the University of Pretoria. You are now joining a distinguished and successful academic Foundation Programme at the University of Pretoria. Students admitted for Foundation Programmes usually achieve higher pass rates than their counterparts doing the same modules on other campuses. Our data also shows that a number of students who started with the four-year programmes at the Mamelodi Campus went on to excel and complete their degrees in the minimum time. Many proceed successfully to the world of work and postgraduate studies. You will hear some of their stories during one of the sessions during the Orientation Programme. I tell you all this upfront, as you enter our institution to start your academic career so that you can be aware that you are among the most privileged students entering the University of Pretoria. You will commence your BSc or BCom studies with the possibility of following various educational pathways into the natural and agricultural sciences, medicine and the allied health sciences, such as physiotherapy, nursing and occupational therapy, as well as engineering, veterinary science, accounting and business management.

I am now going to mention to you some of the opportunities at UP’s Mamelodi Campus that you should utilise to ensure your success: •

Work hard and consistently from your very first day in class. Do not underestimate any of the modules even if the subject content may appear familiar at first. To transition successfully into some of the faculties mentioned above you have to compete for limited spaces with some of the most dedicated students in your cohort. Familiarise yourself with the FLY@UP campaign (The Finish Line is Yours”).

You have access to a team of lecturing and support staff who are focused on and committed to ensuring your academic success. They will provide you with every opportunity to make the transition to your chosen degree course successfully and to introduce you gradually to the pace, level and demands of academic work expected at university as opposed to high school. This process takes place through a structured programme that will ensure that you rise to the challenges you face.

Your learning will take place in small classes, which makes it possible for lecturers to get to know you by name and to help you in accordance with your own style of learning. This will make it easier for you to master the work you have to do during the time on our campus.

Because of the relatively small number of students on our campus, you will have more and easier access to educational support resources, such as the library and IT labs. This means more assistance and opportunities to integrate these critical resources into your university life.

My message to you, is as follows: •

Manage your time and keep good marks throughout the semester. I suggest that you aim for a minimum of 60% in all the modules for which you enrol. This will stand you in good stead when you transition to a profession of your choice or any other study programme.

This gradual transition, which is achieved through the structure of the programme, will enable you to find your feet and discover the rhythm of university-level academic activity. Furthermore, you will learn and discover your own and your peers’ strengths. In the learning groups of which you will become a member, you will assist each other inside and outside of class to discover your own way of mastering your academic work. You are joining a proud tradition. We expect you to keep up this tradition and, hopefully, improve on it as best you can. Before I conclude, I wish to quote from a former UP Mamelodi Campus student who is now excelling at the Hatfield Campus. She had the following to say about the campus: “It is accurate to state that there is no greater campus than the one in Mamelodi. Different opinions may arise as to which campus is ideal, but none would have the correct judgement if they had never been students admitted to the Mamelodi Campus. Every four in five Mamelodi alumni I have come across this year wish they could go back to Mamelodi. Despite the long hours we spent in class for our lectures, frequent consultations and sleepless nights, we were all always on a glorious note when going for classes.” I extend a warm welcome to all of you, to the Mamelodi Campus of the University of Pretoria.
