WRAP-AROUND SUPPORT SPURRED HIS SUCCESS Samuel Peralta wanted to study criminal justice since he was a kid. Starting in UNG’s associate pathway, he transitioned to the bachelor’s program as a sophomore. Now he’s close to achieving his goal of becoming a police officer. Down the road, he wants to earn a master’s degree and teach in the field. As a first-generation college student, Samuel didn’t have much guidance from home. UNG’s student success services helped bridge the gap— everything from math tutoring to the Student Money Management Center (where he’s now a peer mentor).

“These resources were really important to my success in school. It’s part of why I became an orientation leader— so I could share it with students just getting started. I mean, these services are free, and they’re super helpful!”

AT UNG, SHE BROADENED HER HORIZONS Candace Seabolt was looking to try something new when a perfectly timed email from UNG’s competitive scholarship advisor encouraged her to apply for a Fulbright scholarship, a prestigious award that allowed her to teach English in Taiwan after graduation “I never imagined that my life would change so much because of that moment,” she said. Candace overcame challenges on her journey from freshman to Fulbright. Working with an academic success coach, Candace strengthened her study skills and discovered she could combine her love of sports with her passion for teaching as a kinesiology major. Those experiences prepared Candace for her next big step: teaching Physical Education at a middle school in Colorado.

“My goal was to become a teacher and I knew I could make it happen.”

HE’S FINDING HIS FOCUS WITH A UNG SUCCESS COACH Starting out in college can feel nerve-wracking, Colby Sisson got off on the right foot thanks to UNG’s academic success coaching. With a general sense that he wanted to go into teaching, but doubts about which specialty to choose, Colby worked with his academic success coach to pinpoint the subject that inspires him most. Taking advantage of the freedom to explore, he took an eye-opening course that made him zero in on biology.

“It was super fascinating building a deeper understanding about what life is and where it came from—I just thought that was the coolest thing. It’s completely broadened my perspective on the world. It’s like I’m looking at everything through a completely different lens now.”
