As part of orienting myself to UNG, I met with students from all five campuses to learn why they chose UNG. Many of them said that it offered a means to a better future—a future with possibilities.
They have long-held dreams of future careers in healthcare, education, or STEM professions. Others want to leave their mark on the military, arts, entertainment, athletics or cybersecurity. Regardless of which of the five UNG campuses they attend, students come to us to create futures. Some students shared their concerns about completing a degree because of the financial investment, knowing that financial hardships might put their dreams in jeopardy. Alternatives, they said, included working jobs on top of their already full schedule of classes or reducing the number of classes simply because they cannot afford a full-time load. Still others realized they had to consider alternative means to finance their education.
Your philanthropy changes the trajectory of these future healthcare workers, soldiers, business owners, and teachers. When I see the bright smiles of parents when their graduate crosses the stage at commencement, I know that you made that moment possible.
Our graduates are skilled leaders who are filling dire needs in the workforce. They serve in the armed forces protecting not only our shores but those of our allies too. Our elite student athletes have achieved national championships. You invest in our students, and they, in turn, invest in themselves, striving to be the best nurse, soldier, teacher, or business professional they can be.
It has been said that the best way to predict the future is to create it. Your gifts create futures by keeping an affordable, high-quality education within the grasp of generations of students.
Thank you for your past and future generosity that will make a life-changing investment in our students.
With appreciation,
Michael P. Shannon, Ph.D. PresidentThe University of North Georgia Foundation, Inc., supports the mission of the University of North Georgia by promoting philanthropy from all constituents, managing and investing its assets responsibly, providing financial assistance for students, faculty and staff, and serving in an advisory role to the President of the University.
UNG’s students remain the core of our purpose. It is a special responsibility and calling to support our students’ journey to realize their potential and to prepare them for career success or continued education. While UNG remains nationally recognized for affordability and value, one of the barriers to education for many students in our area is cost. Because of the loyalty and generosity of our alumni and friends, many financial barriers have been removed, providing our students the freedom to grow into our next generation of leaders.

I am a senior pursuing my Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting, with a minor in art history. I was born and raised in middle Georgia, came to UNG on a day trip with my parents and fell in love. I couldn’t tell you exactly what it was, but I knew this was the place I was supposed to be.
I truly found my purpose in and passion for life in the UNG art department. Whether it was analyzing history through visual arts or looking at the world through a photographer’s lens or painting studio practice, my professors have encouraged my every step of my college experience. They have not only taught me, but inspired me to become a professor myself.
There is no way I can possibly repay all that the art department has given me, but I do what I can now, and post-graduation, I hope to help ensure that the school continues to grow while retaining all of its most wonderful features.
“With the help of these scholarships, I have been able to take a break from working several other jobs and can now put all my energy into my art practice. I have several disabilities which severely impact my life, so the less stress that I have in life, the more I can fulfill my life’s purpose. My scholarship donors have been a key part to my success, and I will continue to thank them to the very end of my days.”
Chantal & Tommy Bagwell Scholarship
I am a senior pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. When I was in middle school, my grandparents moved in with my family and needed full-time care. Through helping care for my grandparents and a long-term presence of healthcare workers in the family, I discovered my passion in nursing.
I chose UNG before my college career even began. During my junior year of high school, I was a part-time dual enrollment student on the UNG Cumming Campus and became full-time my senior year. UNG offered more than a great nursing education, it gave me the opportunity to stay close to family. It was the best financial option and allowed me to keep working for my best friend’s company.
After graduation, I would love to become a labor and delivery nurse. I had the unique experience of witnessing the birth of my nieces/nephews, and I would love to be a part of creating that safe space for women as they bring life into the world. My favorite class has been Adult Health Medical Surgery. I love the clinical setting, being able to see the bigger picture, and be more hands-on with learning.
“This scholarship has helped me avoid student loans, and offered the opportunity to work part-time instead of full-time. It has also given me the opportunity to live off campus and be partially financially independent from my parents. Being able to support myself is important to me and this scholarship has allowed me to do just that. The Chantal & Tommy Bagwell Scholarship has been the biggest blessing!”
UNG received a $100,000 community investment from Aetna Better Health to increase the number of instructors and certify 600 students and 600 community health care professionals in Mental Health First Aid. Partners in UNG’s regional mental health initiatives include Northeast Georgia Health System, Northside Hospital, Rape Response, United Way of Hall County, United Way of Forsyth County and Wellroot Family Services.
The University of North Georgia Foundation seeks partnerships with local businesses and corporations that positively impact students, faculty, and the community-at-large.
Corporate & Community Giving is a critical component to UNG. Thirty-two percent of the annual operating budget derives from tuition and fees; 31% is from state funding. This means philanthropic gifts from corporations, local businesses, and organizations are fundamental for the future success of UNG.
The Georgia Power Foundation, United Way of Hall County, Gainesville City Schools and Jackson EMC continue their partnership to grow and diversify the teacher pipeline. “Georgia Power Foundation’s investment will ensure that students will have the necessary tools at their disposal to successfully complete their degree in education through the Grow-Your-Own program,” said Glennis Barnes, Gainesville area manager for Georgia Power.

Nursing Professor, Loretta Delargy, RN, MSN, CNE, realized while teaching class one day, that several of her students were coming to class hungry. To meet this vital need, she created Caring Corner, an on-campus food pantry in the Nursing Department, which enables nursing students to enjoy a quick meal, and even take some food home if needed. “More than 400 students have been assisted with food insecurity so far; campus support has been amazing,” Delargy explains. “This is a place to grow and be nurtured, and through donations, we are able to help our students succeed.”
Currently, more than 200 U.S. colleges operate pantries for students in need. UNG Food Pantries are offered on
the Dahlonega, Gainesville, Oconee, and Blue Ridge campuses. The services of each pantry are financed through year-round charitable fundraisers. Most of the supplies are from donations being brought in by volunteers. “The Oconee Campus Food Pantry, Nigel’s Nest, is our way of easing the food shortage burden,” explains Russell Willis, executive director of the Oconee Campus. “The people who manage, volunteer and donate to the pantry are true friends of those in our community who are in need.”

UNG’s Boar’s Head Brigade is one of the best leadership development programs in the country, teaching cadets to lead in the classroom, in the community and the world at large. Through his experience as a UNG cadet, Rainbow was inspired not only by these teachings, but by two mentors who continue to serve the Corps after graduation.
Demonstrating leading with excellence, Cadet Rainbow recently created a scholarship to honor his mentors, William “Bill” Webb, ’12 and Clayton Burke, ’18, who exemplified servant leadership while studying as cadets, and in their current involvement serving as military science instructors and advisors at UNG.
Cadet Rainbow said, “I wanted to put action behind my gratitude, so I asked LTC (Ret.) James Corbin about creating a scholarship. And when he asked what I wanted to name the scholarship, I wanted to honor two men who have impacted my life and other cadet lives here in the Corps and at UNG.”
Cadet Rainbow added, “It was important to me to pay it forward, to help future students, like I’ve been helped with scholarships.”
“It’s not about me, but the example to be made for future cadets. Cadets that also might have thought of starting a scholarship but dismissed the idea.”
The Eagle Fund Endowed Scholarship, 2nd year recipient COL Jack Peevy Cadet Admissions Scholarship
My father served in the United States Army for more than 30 years, including time spent posted at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, where I was born. Three years after, my adoption was finalized and my family moved to Australia and then Madison, Alabama, where we currently reside. I am a sophomore cadet, pursuing a degree in strategic and security studies with a concentration in international affairs.
I am inspired by my father and all the others he served alongside, and this is what drove me to want to serve. The moment I stepped onto UNG’s campus and later attended NLC (National Leadership Challenge), I knew the University of North Georgia would be the path to my dream of becoming an officer in the U.S. Army.
Receiving scholarships has helped my family and me financially; however, most importantly, it has introduced me to so many individuals who have become mentors and leaders in my college experience.
“Thank you for helping to ensure a bright future not only for me, but for many more deserving young people that have a dream to serve our great nation and choose UNG as their path.”
The Eagle Fund Endowed Scholarship provides support for members of the UNG Corps of Cadets who demonstrate leadership potential, qualities of high moral character, and are actively pursuing a commission in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Eagle Fund was founded in 2011 by six alumni who recognized the need of providing financial support to the future military leaders of our country.
Under the leadership of Oscar “Bo” Fears and an active board of volunteers, the scholarship has grown a substantial donor base of more than 505 supporters representing all alumni classes. Since its inception, The Eagle Fund has provided more than $261,000 in scholarships to 69 worthy cadets. In academic year 20222023, The Eagle Fund awarded nine scholarships. This included six returning cadets and three incoming cadets.
The Eagle Fund recently received the 2023 Presidential Leadership Award for their significant contributions to the positive impact and advancement of the University of North Georgia. On behalf of the board, Cadet Judge accepted this award recently at the UNG Gala.
“As I look around the room, I see the past, I see the present and I see the future of a great legacy of the Boar’s Head Brigade. You cannot look forward without looking back, just as you cannot build a sound structure without a strong foundation.
For the Boar’s Head Brigade, it is our alumni, the members of The Eagle Fund, and the officers who have served our great nation and continue to serve with a focus on UNG through their support of our ROTC program and our current cadets. These men and women are our rock-solid foundation.”

Growing up, my mom was a police officer and one of the only women in her field. She was a trailblazer and inspired me to chase my dreams, even if it went against the norm. The choice to study at UNG was easy as it would allow me to achieve both my dreams to pursue cybersecurity and to become an officer in the United States Army.
There are so many ways and innumerable benefits to getting involved at UNG, and I did just that. I am the president of the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association, where I help fellow students connect with cybersecurity and international relations companies and programs across the nation. I am also part of the Chinese Flagship program, hosting events on campus based around Chinese culture. I will complete a capstone year through this program, attending defense language school in Taiwan. I am proud to compete in the Ranger Challenge and to be in the Honors program.
After graduation, I plan on commissioning into the U.S. Army and branching either Cybersecurity, Military Intelligence or Signal.
“I am honored to be on their [donors] radar and to receive the opportunity to do more. I appreciate that they have helped create a bridge between students and success. Being a scholarship recipient, I have been able to educate my classmates on the opportunities that UNG and donors provide for students, an unofficial scholarship ambassador if you will. This inspires me to invest and give back after I graduate. Your support deepens my appreciation for UNG; thank you!”
The University of North Georgia (UNG) broke ground Sept. 23 on its Wynne-Mathews Military Science Center for the Corps of Cadets. With the groundbreaking a year ahead of what was originally expected, the Military Science Center is set to open in time for the fall 2025 semester.
UNG has received $8.3 million in state funding for the project after raising $5 million in private donations. The state funds include $7 million for construction in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget and $1.3 million for design in the Fiscal Year 2023 amended budget.
UNG is one of six senior military colleges (SMC) in the nation, and it is the lone Army-only SMC. It holds designations as the Military College of Georgia and a State Leadership Institution. More than 60 alumni have gone on to be flag officers. The Military Science Center, slated for

construction between the Drill Field and the cadet residence halls, will provide modern, technology-enabled classrooms sufficient for teaching 1,000 cadets.
It is the first of three planned facilities necessary to modernize and consolidate the support functions of UNG’s Corps of Cadets.
The facility is named in recognition of the philanthropic support and service of Bob Mathews, ‘71, UNG Real Estate Foundation founding chairman, and in honor of his late wife, Mary Joan Wynne Mathews.
In 2015, the UNG Softball team was victorious at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. This was not only a win for the team, but also for the University - the first National Championship won in UNG’s history.
Fast forward to 2023, our softball team continued to pursue excellence. The Nighthawks secured the program’s second National Championship title with 7-3 and 3-0 victories against Grand Valley State University in May.
Donations made toward the softball team have made a significant impact, helping fund scholarships, facilities, and equipment and beyond. National Championships take resources - thank you for helping build champions!
I am a proud UNG student-athlete playing the position of outfielder on our baseball team. I am a junior pursuing my Bachelor of Business Administration in finance. When I came to UNG, business excited me and I wanted to learn everything there was to know about business and how it works.
I was born in Mexico and came to the United States when I was in first grade. We moved around Georgia a good bit growing up, but I am happy to have found my home in Lawrenceville, and now, on UNG’s campus. Both of my parents inspired me to attend college and encouraged me to continue to pursue my love for baseball. After graduation I would love to play baseball professionally, but I would also love to go into insurance where I can have an impact on the Hispanic population.
Outside of the classroom and off the ballfield, I am involved in SAC (Student-Athlete Advising Committee) as secretary, UNG Sales Club, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes); I am a Hawk ‘Em mentor for incoming student-athletes and volunteer often with my baseball teammates.
“Thanks to you, I will be graduating debt free, which will be huge for my family and me. Your donations not only impact me in the form of scholarship, but I get to learn in the amazing new facility, the Cottrell Center for Business, Technology and Innovation, and play on the turf baseball field that allows us to practice year-round. Thank you again for all of the ways you impact a student-athlete like me!”

Jimmy and Harriett Burson were tremendous supporters of the Women’s Basketball team at the University of North Georgia, both on and off the court. They attended every possible basketball game for more than 20 years and hosted team events at their home. Invested in the lives of these young female basketball players, the Bursons supported their ambitions while at North Georgia, post graduation and in their professional careers. After their passing, the Jimmy & Harriet Burson Women’s Basketball Scholarship was created to recognize their selfless support, and assist Women’s Basketball players with unmet financial assistance for their cost of attending UNG.
“The impact of my parents’ scholarship is immeasurable as it will not only help a current student-athlete financially, but will also help us continue to compete for championships by recruiting high caliber players. The recipient will represent all of the things my parents loved about our student-athletes and teams: strong character, competitive spirit, integrity, and excellence.”
