PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What an amazing beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year! With the installation of a new administration, the Lord provided guidance and led the successful implementation of many initiatives throughout the university.

Some of these included the rebranding of the university with new mission and vision statements, a new biblical worldview that articulates the intellectual development and spiritual formation of students, and core values that serve as an outward expression of our purpose as a Christian university. In addition, the university held its first December commencement in 18 years, the first on-campus spring commencement in 41 years, developed 10 new academic programs that are being implemented in fall 2017, and completed several capital projects such as the establishment of the Dr. and Mrs. Fred Lackey Great Commission Lawn and the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice.

As we continue to follow the Lord’s leading in A New Day, A New Journey, there is much excitement about the 2017-2018 academic year. Much of the excitement surrounds the presence of new and returning students that are engaging in their studies and co-curricular activities while we are beginning to implement the 5-year Many Partners – One Mission strategic plan. This strategic plan will engage 107 initiatives to further strengthen the calling of University of Mobile as a Great Commission university. In this process, much development will occur around enhancements of the campus setting, academic programs, student life, and student scholarships.

As we engage in the new strategic plan and continue developing the students with a Great Commission focus, we want to build upon the legacy of alumni and friends of the university with new traditions such as President’s Commissioning that emphasize the commitment students are making as they embark upon what we term “Higher Education for a Higher Purpose.”

At the President’s Commissioning, new students placed their hands on the Great Commission Globe, signifying their intention to dedicate themselves during their collegiate career to pursuing their professional calling for a Great Commission purpose. Before long, the students will touch the Great Commission Globe again at graduation, signifying their response to God in Isaiah 8 to “send me.” At this time, the graduates will join the other alumni in furthering the kingdom of God for His ultimate purpose.

Coffee Shop Experience Inspires Student to Start Homeless Ministry

By Samantha Moats The barista stands smiling behind the counter while preparing drinks.

Meanwhile, an unkempt, older man walks in: dirty blue jeans, a shirt several sizes too large, his face unshaven and burned from the sun.

“Hey there, Chelsey!” he calls to the barista.

“Hey, Mr. Jimmy!” she returns, coming from behind the counter to reach out for a hug – still smiling.

This smiling barista is Chelsey Sayasane, Miss University of Mobile 2017. The man is Mr. Jimmy, a homeless man and a frequenter of Moka’s Coffee Company in Saraland, AL where Chelsey has served as a barista for several years.

Their friendship sparked an idea that became a ministry to provide winter, rain and business coats to the homeless and create relationships.

Chelsey started the “Coats of Many Colors” ministry in 2016 as a college student at UM. It became part of her platform in the Miss University of Mobile pageant, which she won in February 2017. A national company based in Mobile and led by a UM graduate, Slingshot Inc., liked the idea and promoted it nationwide through their business.

Chelsey said God used Mr. Jimmy to open her heart to loving people in ways she hadn’t before.

“He would come into Moka’s every week and ask if he could pick up the trash in the parking lot,” said Chelsey.

“He just wanted to help out. When I would see him, I would talk to him like I would to a friend. We talked about his family, what led him to become homeless, and why he thought it was so hard to overcome. I saw him as a human being, not just a homeless man.”

Chelsey eventually asked Mr. Jimmy what the homeless community needed

most from their neighbors throughout Mobile County.

“He told me that they needed emotional care, to know they aren’t forgotten, but physically, they needed coats,” said Chelsey.

This conversation prompted her to pray for what God was calling her to do: to actively work with the homeless community in Mobile. And soon, she went to work.

“I started to strategize. I made a goal to do one coat drop-off a month and collect coats throughout the month,” she explained.

Chelsey collects coats from all over the community of Saraland just north of the city of Mobile – Saraland High School, Bridgeway Academy and Merle Norman. She picks up the coats from each location and partners with local organization One Meal to distribute coats one Sunday a month.

The coats are distributed directly to homeless men and women in downtown Mobile.

During Chelsey’s very first coat delivery, a local news anchor was running in Bienville Square, a public park in downtown Mobile. The anchor grew curious about what was going on, so she stopped running to ask.

After hearing Chelsey’s story, she conducted a brief Facebook Live interview with Chelsey.

“That interview opened so many doors,” said Chelsey.

To date, Chelsey has collected more than 1,000 coats, and the coats keep coming. Despite the influx of donations, there are still needs to fill.

Monetary donations to Coats of Many Colors can be made online through University of Mobile at giving.umobile.edu.

“Right now, there are so many more women’s coats than men’s, but there are more homeless men in Mobile than there are homeless women,” noted Chelsey.

But she remains patient as she considers ways to remedy the shortage of men’s coats, keeping her focus on a more important issue: spreading the gospel. In addition to collecting and giving away coats, Chelsey has prayed with over 80 homeless men and women.

“It’s much more than giving away free coats,” she continued. “I want those who are homeless to know they are not forgotten, that we see them in their struggle. This is about building relationships in our community.”

“Jesus is so faithful,” said Chelsey.

“When I was praying about this, I asked the Lord to take control. I wanted Him to use me in whatever I did. When I began serving others, I always expected to make an impact, but this has changed me and my heart.”

University of Mobile Joins International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities

Business Students Earn Global Top 100 Rank

By Samantha Moats Three University of Mobile business majors earned Global Top 100 ranking in an international business simulation game in Spring 2017.

As part of their Strategic Management course with Kathy Dunning, associate dean in the School of Business, students achieved or tied for the best overall score performance of the week worldwide for three consecutive weeks in the Business Simulation Game. Team members were Kyle Moran of Mobile, a senior majoring in computer information systems; Christian Harris of Dunlap, TN, a senior majoring in business administration with a concentration in management; and Philipp Patt of Cologne, Germany, a senior majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance.

Business Simulation Game is played by university students across the United States and around the world. Students at these universities are divided into groups within their classrooms and each individual group

operates a fictitious athletic footwear company. The students’ company must produce and market branded and private-label footwear, while competing with other groups of students within the classroom and across the world.

Rankings are based on the company’s performance in Earnings Per Share, Return on Equity and Stock Price. Moran, Harris and Patt’s group not only tied for the best overall score – their Earnings Per Share totaled $44.47 and their Stock Price of $1001.51 are considered the best performances worldwide for the week. Additionally, their Return on Average Equity of 40.3 percent tied for 66th best worldwide performance of the week.

The game provides students hands-on experience in managerial roles. The competition element encourages students to employ strategic, analytical and decision-making skills they learn in class.

University of Mobile has been accepted as a member of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities.

University of Mobile President Timothy L. Smith said IABCU membership will enhance the Baptist university’s Great Commission focus by strengthening the university’s partnership with sister institutions and providing increased opportunities to collaborate.

“We look forward to partnering with the other Baptist higher educational institutions in preparing students through a Christian worldview to fulfill their Great Commission calling,” Smith said.

The IABCU is an organization of 41 colleges, universities and schools that lay claim to their Baptist history, heritage and relationships.

The association fosters intentional Christian education, while cooperating in the mutual well-being of each member.

University of Mobile was founded in 1961 by Alabama Baptists and is affiliated with the Alabama Baptist State Convention.

Retiring Professors Becky Fox and Anne Lowery Honored University of Mobile faculty and staff celebrated the careers of two longtime faculty members during a reception May 9 in Weaver Hall on campus. Family and friends gathered to congratulate Becky Fox, associate professor of music in the Alabama School of the Arts, and Dr. Anne Lowery, professor of business in the School of Business.

Both celebrated 27 years of service as full-time faculty members at the Christian university. Additionally, Fox served as a part-time music instructor for 11 years prior to joining the full-time faculty.

Fox began her career at the university, then Mobile College, in 1979 teaching part-time in the music department. In 1990 she became a full-time music instructor. She recently co-chaired a successful fundraising campaign that resulted in the university’s recognition as an All-Steinway School.

Fox holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Education in piano performance from William Carey College. She and her husband, Dr. Rod Fox, live in Mobile.

Lowery joined the university in 1990 as assistant professor of business.

She served as dean of the School of Business from 1996 until 2008 when she was named associate vice president of academic affairs. In 2015, she chose to return to the classroom full-time in the School of Business.

Lowery holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama, a Master of Arts in economics from University of Wisconsin, and a Doctor of Business Administration from Mississippi State. She and her husband, Henry, live in Northport, AL.

College Students Spend Breaks Building Bridges to Spread Message of Jesus Christ

By Samantha Moats As many college students headed to the beach during class breaks, a group of University of Mobile students took a break of a different kind and used their mid-semester vacation to share the message and love of Jesus Christ.

The annual event, called “The Bridge,” gives students at the Baptist university a hands-on ministry experience that serves to build a bridge between the university and the ministries with whom the students partner, and between those ministries and the communities they serve.

“The objective of this trip is to take a group of students out of the ‘Bible Belt’ and expose them to a different culture within our own country,” said Hannah Stokes, student life coordinator for University Ministries at University of Mobile. “Bridge trips typically go to bigger cities, working with church planters and Christian ministries, to serve alongside them and learn how they approach ministry in a context much different than ours.”

Over the years, students have visited places like Seattle, New York City, Las Vegas and more. This spring break, one group visited Miami while others served in Washington, D.C.; New York, and Portland, OR. Students on the Miami team included Anna Caroline Scales and Zac Moore, who served as student leaders; Madison Verkouille, Sierra Dillenschneider, Wayne Tolbert and Noah Whittington. They were accompanied by Chase Alford ’12, director of University Ministries.

The Bridge is also a learning experience, as students learn to serve and to lead.

“I learned a lot about patience and flexibility. You’re trying to befriend

everyone and serve these ministries, but you’re still leading. That’s a hard balance,” said Anna Caroline.

“I learned you don’t have to go to a third-world country to be effective in ministry,” said Zac. “There are people, communities and cities (in the United States) that need to hear the voice of the local church, the voice of believers and the word of God.” While the team was in Miami, they partnered with several different organizations. One organization, Catalyst, is a ministry for youth in Miami who participate in the four elements of hip-hop: breaking (or break-dancing), graffiti, emceeing and DJ’ing. The organization has been meeting on Saturday nights since Sept. 8, 2001, missing only two nights due to inclement weather.

“Getting to work with Catalyst was great. They are so intent on reaching people through their hobbies and what they like to do. From there, it’s easy to build discipleship-relationships,” noted Anna Caroline.

The group also worked with Redemption Church Miami, a church plant in the community of “Little Haiti,” so-called for the large population of Haitian immigrants residing there. The church is pastored by Jeremiah Taylor through the North American Mission Board. It meets at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, where the group also attended church on Sunday.

The Monday following, students helped Jeremiah deliver invitations

for Redemption’s Easter service. They went from home to home, meeting people on their front porches and learning about their lives in Little Haiti.

“People were so welcoming. Many were simply curious about what we were doing in Little Haiti,” reflected Anna Caroline.

The students also served at the Miami Rescue Mission, which reaches out to the homeless community of Miami. Students helped prepare dinner, then served food for three hours. The first hour, they served to those who live at the mission itself; the next two hours, they served others who do not live in the mission.

When the students had spare time in their afternoons or evenings, they explored the different parts of the city. They visited the beach, attended a Miami Heat basketball game and shopped – all the while, they spent time in fellowship with one another.

“Our trip to Miami was well-balanced between ministry and downtime, which allowed us to get to know each other.

My favorite part was getting to know the people on my team. It’s amazing how much you can learn about people in a short amount of time,” said Zac. For their last ministry experience, the students met with the Krisi House Child Advocacy Center, a mission that focuses on removing children from situations of sexual abuse as well as human and sex trafficking. They learned about the seriousness of trafficking in Miami.

University of Mobile’s Ministry Resources Gives Churches Connection to Students

New University Print Features Campus Landmarks A new painting featuring iconic campus landmarks taps into precious college memories for generations of University of Mobile students while raising funds for the university. The watercolor, titled “Heritage,” was painted by Mobile artist Barbara Davis, whose daughter and son-in-law are both UM graduates.

“This print perfectly encompasses University of Mobile,” said Lauren McCaghren, senior director for alumni programs and annual giving. “Whether it’s driving through the majestic oaks, studying by the fountain, reflecting in Lyon Chapel or having your picture taken with the ram, memories of days at UM are sure to be resurrected each time one glances at the print.’”

Prints and notecards featuring the original artwork are available through the Office for Advancement by calling 251.442.2587. Cost is $40 for an 11x14 print, $60 for an 18x24 print, and $15 for 10 notecards and envelopes.

Davis, whose work has been accepted into national and regional juried shows across the southeast, said she paints “for the sheer joy of it.”

“If I am able to paint something for University of Mobile and some of these students and alumni can have it in their rooms and homes, bringing them warm memories when they look at it, that just makes my heart sing,” she said.

Her aim was to produce “so much more than a painting. There’s a feeling

Representatives from churches across the state and region can fill out the request form, found at umobile.edu/ministry-resources, to post employment and volunteer opportunities. Postings will be advertised to students, primarily in the School of Christian Studies.

“We hope to provide our students with opportunities to serve in and through the local church. Ultimately, we want to assist in helping churches advance the kingdom of God,” said Chase Alford, director of university ministries. He will serve as a liaison between students and churches, and can be reached at 251.442.2202.

Churches in need of worship bands, interns, Disciple Now leaders, preachers or teachers are welcome to submit a form. Additionally, churches with mission trips or projects for ministry teams should post those opportunities as well.

While there is no guarantee that students from University of Mobile will be able to fill all positions, Alford is hopeful that will allow many students the opportunity to serve.

University of Mobile Joins Consortium for Global Education, Expands Study Abroad Opportunities with Office for Global Engagement

U.S. Flag Flies Over United States Capitol to Honor UM President Timothy Smith

University of Mobile is expanding study-abroad opportunities for students through a new partnership with the Consortium for Global Education (CGE) and the creation of a new Office for Global Engagement.

“We are excited about the opportunities this new partnership will bring for University of Mobile students to study abroad, while also creating opportunities for international students to experience Christian higher education at University of Mobile,” said UM President Dr. Timothy L. Smith.

The Consortium for Global Education is a non-profit global organization with a membership of more than 40 accredited American private universities and colleges representing approximately 124,000 undergraduate students and over 7,000 full-time faculty.

The consortium provides international opportunities for exchanges, study abroad, international recruiting, faculty-led study trips and international service. Each year, the consortium assists hundreds of faculty members and thousands of students who participate in CGE-related overseas study, service and teaching programs and exchanges.

The university’s new Office for Global Engagement will work with CGE to expand and coordinate study abroad and international experiences, in keeping with the Baptist university’s focus as a Great Commission university.

Dr. Doug Wilson, previously dean of the School of Christian Studies, has been named dean of the Office for Global Engagement. Wilson has extensive experience in the field of international studies, having

The flag was flown May 14 at the request of U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, with the support of former South Carolina Rep. Barrett Gresham, in honor of Dr. Smith’s inauguration as the fourth president of University of Mobile.

Dr. Smith was well-known as a leader in higher education in South Carolina.

He joined Anderson University in 2014 as vice president of strategic initiatives and special associate to the provost and was named provost in 2015.

He was named president of University of Mobile in April 2016 and was formally inaugurated on March 24, 2017.

“Dr. Wilson brings a plethora of experience to the role with a heart for missions and an academic understanding of intercultural studies and practice,” said Dr. Chris McCaghren, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

In addition, Wilson will work to build a solid network for international recruitment and support for current international students on campus, McCaghren said.

“We at UM recognized the need for our students to be engaged in the world around them, particularly through the Great Commission tradition that we have. This new office will prepare students for that very thing,” McCaghren said.

Dr. Carolyn Bishop, president of CGE, welcomed the university into the global membership.

“During our site visit, I observed the passion exhibited by administrators and dedicated faculty to provide University of Mobile students with a quality education toward degree completion within the context of growing a global framework of academics, service and sharing,” Bishop said.

Senior Theatre Students Work With Casting Directors in NYC Two senior students in the Alabama School of the Arts at University of Mobile worked with casting directors and Broadway professionals during a New York City Showcase held March 7-11.

Bruce Earnest, assistant vice president for academic affairs and director of music theatre at the Alabama School of the Arts, said the UM students participated in professional workshops with students from throughout the nation.

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with and audition for the top agents and casting directors in the country. Our students were both highly competitive and Christ-like in their interaction with other artists and industry professionals.” said Earnest.

Musical theatre major Allen Dawson of Mobile and Skyler Gilliland of McCalla, AL, a worship leadership major with concentrations in film and theatre, worked with the casting director for Telsey + Company, a top casting agency.

Dawson and Gilliland prepared a showcase audition that included songs and monologues, were coached

by Broadway professionals and performed their showcases for a panel of talent agents, managers and casting directors.

Earnest said the NYC Showcase offers a unique opportunity for students majoring in musical theatre and theatre at the Christian university.

“These experiences garner national attention to the excellence of our training and degree programs.

We are among only a handful of institutions that are able to provide this opportunity for graduating

students. The NYC Showcase allows our students to explore employment opportunities at the highest level while transitioning into the professional theatre industry,” Earnest said.

Megginson Awards Presented to Faculty and Staff University of Mobile’s highest faculty and staff honors, the Megginson Awards, were presented at the annual year-end faculty-staff luncheon May 9 at Ram Hall on campus. The university also announced promotions, service awards and recognitions.

The Megginson Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the university in the areas of teaching, research and service. Recipients are chosen by committees of peers from among nominations sent by students, faculty and staff. The recipients are honored for their character, ethics, accomplishments and contributions to

the university.

The 2017 William A. Megginson Teaching Award was presented to Barbara Brousseau, assistant professor of French.

The 2017 Emma Frances Megginson Service Award was presented to Kristie Sanders ’08, admissions information specialist.

The 2017 Mitford Ray Megginson Research Award was presented to Dr. Troy Henderson, professor of mathematics. Henderson was also presented with a university medallion in recognition of his recent promotion to full professor.

University of Mobile Scholarship Speaker John Maxwell Urges a

‘Life of Significance’

he difference between living a life of “success” or one of “significance” depends upon where you choose to add value, New York Times best-selling author and international leadership expert John Maxwell told University of Mobile students and supporters at the 12th annual University of Mobile Scholarship Banquet April 27.

“Success is when I add value to myself. Significance is when I add value to others,” explained Maxwell during an evening at the Mobile Convention Center that shared the vision of the Christian university while raising funds for scholarships.

University President Timothy L. Smith thanked supporters for providing scholarships for students, including many in the 650-member audience who established endowed scholarships.

“At the end of the day, it’s about the students and how we can partner together to strengthen the opportunity for students to engage in a university such as University of Mobile, where they are in a Christ-centered academic community,” Smith said.

Maxwell is among many speakers of national prominence that UM has featured while raising funds for student scholarships. He speaks each year to Fortune 500 companies, presidents of nations, and many of the world’s top business leaders. He has sold more than 26 million books in 50 languages and, in 2014, was identified as the No. 1 leader in business by the American Management Association and the most influential leadership expert in the world by Business Insider and Inc. magazine.

His message focused on intentional living and the importance of living a life of significance by adding value to the lives of others.

“Good intentions will never take you anywhere you want to go. Only intentional living will get you the things you want in life,” Maxwell said. “When you’re intentional, you can add value to everything you do and to every person you meet.”

Deciding how best to add value to others involves making decisions that include where to invest your time as well as your financial resources, according to Maxwell.

He said two qualities he looks for first in an organization he supports financially are “competence” and “good character.” Maxwell noted the university’s purpose of higher education that transforms hearts, President Smith’s vision for the future, and his own experience earlier that day on campus with university leadership and students.

“This is an organization that has both character and competence,” Maxwell said.

He emphasized the lasting impact of transformational change, explaining that when you train, you educate people; but when you transform, you change people.

On campus prior to the banquet, Maxwell met several UM Ambassadors and spoke to students at Ram Hall. He

advised them to develop a plan for growth and learning that continues throughout their lifetime.

He related how he determined to become a leadership expert, and to accomplish that goal in five years through consistent daily learning. But something unexpected happened when he realized he had fallen in love with the learning process, according to Maxwell.

“I quit asking the question ‘how long it would take’ and started asking the question ‘how far can I go,’” Maxwell said. “Be growth-oriented, not goal-oriented.”

eptember of 2017 brings the official launch of “a dynamic community dedicated to creating vibrant programs and ideas to support scholarship efforts.”

This is the mission statement of the University of Mobile Torch Society, a newly formed group of individuals passionate about “Lighting the Way through Scholarships” and through crafting impactful relationships with students.

This vision ignites a legacy of stewardship as it blurs the lines between what it means to give and what it means to receive.

The Torch Society is actively growing. Anyone who desires to invest in the lives of students both through fundraising, and through creating lasting relationships with students, is welcome to join. Members take

part by using their gifts on a range of committees, all with one goal: to promote a spirit of volunteerism that engages and serves University of Mobile students. Those who interact with existing Torch Society members will likely find a common theme—they give because they once received.

A Calling to Serve When Dr. Timothy Smith became the fourth president of University of Mobile, his wife, Penney, brought with her a calling to serve students.

Her previous activity in organizations and auxiliaries throughout her and Dr. Smith’s journey led her to dream even bigger.

“I always knew that when I had the opportunity, I wanted to be part of impacting students’ lives,” she said.

Mobile began forming an idea of a society of individuals who raised scholarships for students to cover the gaps in their funding—those who were struggling to pay for books, or a meal plan, or for the final balance for their room and board for the semester.

Penney Smith once faced similar circumstances. Her heart for enabling students to thrive in their education began with her own college experience.

Her father passed away when she was young, leaving her 37-year-old mother with three children. Without financial aid, Smith would have been unable to complete college, but she received a scholarship sufficient to cover her education.

“My whole life and career changed because of that scholarship,” she said.

Throughout her adult life, she has constantly desired to “pay it forward.”

When Smith arrived at UM, she found that the spirit of serving students was embedded within the university’s DNA, even from its earliest days. The first First Lady of the college – Annie Boyd Parker Weaver, informally known as “B” Weaver – founded the Mobile College Auxiliary to raise funds for projects around the campus.

Smith located the bylaws of the Mobile College Auxiliary, which had been dormant since 1994. Desiring to maintain the heritage of such an organization, she formed a team to transform the Auxiliary into the Torch

Society, becoming executive director of the new organization. The legacy of service shifted from projects to scholarships, and the community began to grow.

An Effort of the Heart Mary Brown serves as Torch Society president because she and her husband, Charlie, are also “giving back.”

As a student of University of Mobile (then Mobile College) in 1976, Charlie Brown ’79 & ’14 struggled to make ends meet. But he was not left to struggle alone. Throughout his college experience, he lived with several different families who made their home his own.

Eight years ago, Mary and Charlie Brown began opening their own home and their hearts to students in need, students Mary calls “forever our kids.” Through her leadership in the Torch Society, she is excited to raise funds for students. However, her

passion reaches beyond students’ financial need. Her desire is to foster community with students.

“My vision is not to only help students through scholarship, but to take a personal approach and really keep in touch with our scholarship recipients,” she said.

The Torch Society is not merely a financial effort—it’s an effort of the heart. The Society’s motto is, “Lighting the Way through Scholarships.” The end result of the work is not the money; it’s a path toward something even more powerful: relationships that carry on a legacy.

The Seed God Planted Recent alumni (graduates within the last 1-10 years) stereotypically don’t join auxiliaries and societies and fundraising efforts, thinking: “What do I have to offer? My ability to give doesn’t yet match the degree of my desire to give” or “I just don’t even know where to start. What do I have

to offer if I’m not ready to write a large sum on a check to my university?”

For Morgan Carnley ’11, these questions didn’t stop her. From the moment she walked across the stage on the day she became an alumna of University of Mobile, she was imagining how she would give back.

“The Lord really laid on my heart to start saving for a scholarship for UM. That’s been on my heart for a long time,” she said.

Carnley served as president of the Student Government Association from 2010-2011. She received scholarships as a student, along with an honorarium designated for the SGA president. That leadership position was a priceless opportunity to her, and it has fueled her desire to find a way to give in a way she was blessed to receive.

When she heard of the Torch Society, she saw pieces falling into place right in front of her.

“I was so excited to realize the seed God had planted in my heart years ago was for this purpose,” she said.

Today, Carnley serves as vice president for the Junior Torch Society, a part of the Torch Society specifically

By Kala Holt Hembree I am a proud alumna of University of Mobile. I do not have enough words to describe how drastically my four years here shaped my life. But for now, I am five years a graduate blissfully married to Joshua Hembree, another alumnus whom I met in the library on the second day of college.

I am thriving in my vocation as an educator because I had the financial freedom upon graduation to pursue my career unburdened by debt. I have this freedom largely due to endowed scholarships. And today, I have an opportunity to focus on such scholarships for students so very much like myself.

I knew in high school that University of Mobile was the place God had for me to continue my education. I believed that deeply enough to not apply to any other university. I was concerned about how I could afford my tuition, but I believed that God does not call people to do something where He will not provide. As I approached my freshman year, my funding covered most of my expenses. But I was still short. As the daughter of parents who had devoted their entire lives to Christian ministry, the cost seemed like a million dollars to me.

I opened my hands before God, believing He would provide for His promises. One afternoon I sat at a table and saw God’s answers to my prayers in the form of individuals who answered the call to serve me and students like me. I was eating lunch with the people who funded my scholarship.

From that day forward, I have desired to live the mandate of Christ: “To whom much is given, much is also required.” (Luke 12:48) The Torch Society has embodied that calling for me, and I am honored to serve with members of this new community building our numbers and striving to grow our work to light the way for students to learn what we know so well: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

The Junior Torch Society provides opportunities for young alumni to find likeminded people passionate about forming relationships and opportunities for the students behind them.

‘For Such a Time as This’ “For such a time as this.” These words come from Esther 4:14, and they are the driving scripture of the Torch Society. Penney Smith realized that the financial provision for her education over 30 years ago was not simply for her own benefit.

She knows she was blessed “for such a time as this.”

“Having been a life impacted by scholarships, blessing others with scholarships is why I’m so passionate and driven about this work and joining forces with others who share that passion,” she said.

Smith is not alone in realizing that the purpose of the scholarship she received was not just for her past, but is a call to serve students today.

Mary Brown’s husband once needed a home in college, and now she and Charlie give the very thing he needed to others: both physical aid and meaningful relationship. Morgan Carnley was a student leader who is now devoted to aiding in the success of future leaders.

A student receiving financial aid experiences the blessing of provision; but how much greater is the experience of, on the other side of one’s educational journey, giving to someone like yourself, anticipating how God will use that gift.

Graduation Ceremony Returns to Campus

Fifty years after the first graduating class received their diplomas on the front lawn of Weaver Hall, the University of Mobile Class of 2017 followed in their footsteps on May 13, becoming the first graduating class in 41 years to celebrate commencement on the campus where they earned their degrees.

Members of the charter class of 1967 were in attendance for the historic ceremony, along with more than 3,500 family and friends of the new UM graduates.

It was an event that truly fit the theme of this first year of a new administration: “A New Day, A New Journey.”

More than 3,000 chairs placed on the just-completed Dr. and Mrs. Fred Lackey Great Commission Lawn were filled as family and friends arrived, then it was standing room only beneath the live oak trees framing the lawn.

As graduates recessed out after the ceremony, they touched the new Great Commission Globe fountain in the center of the lawn. This new “Great Commission Tradition” signifies graduates’ commitment to serve others and spread the message and love of Jesus Christ as they fulfill their professional calling in the world.

UM President Timothy L. Smith gave the commencement address, encouraging graduates to “remain focused on Christ.”

“You will never have to worry about going at this alone because, if you

fulfill the Great Commission calling in your life in accordance to His will, we are reminded in the last few words of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:20 that He will be with you always and to the end of the age,” Smith said.

Honored Guests Members of the first graduating class of 1967 were honored guests at the

Saturday morning graduation. About 30 members of the original class of 67 graduates had gathered on campus the night before to celebrate their 50th reunion.

and execution of the graduation ceremony were so impressive.

“I am proud of what the university has become. It will always hold a special place in my heart for the amazing people – classmates, faculty, staff and others – who made a difference in my life. I look forward to many future opportunities to celebrate UM,” Holmes said.

The previous night’s festivities had included remembrances of their college years, including the time an alarm clock was secretly placed in a classmate’s purse and set to go off when it was time for the chapel speaker to be finished.

Weaver Awards The university presented its two top awards to graduates who exemplify the mission of the university. The Weaver awards are given to the top male and female graduating students and are chosen by vote of the faculty. Selection is based on scholarship, Christian character, leadership and service.

The 2017 Annie Boyd Parker Weaver Excellence Award was presented to Kelli Rae Brown of Jasper, AL. Brown received the Bachelor of Science in biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. She was also awarded the College of Arts and Sciences Achievement Award, the area award in

biology, graduated summa cum laude and was an Honors graduate with thesis.

In presenting the award, UM Board of Trustees Chairman Deborah Nelson said Brown is described by her professors “as having a passion for science, a tremendous work ethic, and a breadth of knowledge in the liberal arts that few can match.”

Brown was also praised for her work as a science tutor and peer leader who freely gives of her time to help others learn. A science professor described her as “one of the kindest and most generous human beings,” Nelson said.

The 2017 William K. Weaver Jr. Excellence Award was presented to

Joshua Thomas Hill of Huntsville, AL. Hill received the Bachelor of Science in worship leadership in the Alabama School of the Arts.

Nelson said faculty described Hill as “a young intellectual who is one of the finest scholarly musicians we have ever had the experience of educating at University of Mobile.”

Faculty noted Hill is extremely successful as both an instrumentalist

and vocalist, travelled with RamCorps and Voices of Mobile, is a student arranger, Jazz Band vocalist, song writer and composer, worship leader, and also serves as worship associate at Government Street Baptist Church in Mobile.

n the flurry of festivities marking the historic inauguration of Dr. Timothy L. Smith as the fourth president of University of Mobile, one special moment stands out.

It was the moment when over 300 students who had gathered in Ram Hall for a student-led praise and worship service encircled Smith and his wife, Penney, laying hands on the couple and praying for them, their family, and wisdom in the daily decisions the new president will make. At 6’4”, Smith stood head and shoulders above the crush of students, head bowed, in an emotional moment marked by a spirit of unity that permeated the entire four-day celebration.

UM Board of Trustees Chairman Deborah Nelson ’76 expressed the significance of the inauguration in her opening remarks a few days later at the inauguration and investiture ceremony March 24, 2017, at Cottage Hill Baptist Church in Mobile.

“It is a joyful day of celebration as well as the formal recognition of the beginning of a new era for University of Mobile,” Nelson said. “It is a day filled with all the pageantry and symbolism of an academic tradition that spans centuries. It is the culmination of a week of celebration, of elegant dinners and picnics on the lawn, of praise and worship, of laughter and shared experiences that create the memories and bonds that are such a treasured part of the university experience.”

She continued, “I find a special joy in welcoming you to celebrate a moment that we believe is inspired by God, guided by Him, and orchestrated

by His hand. This is not our University of Mobile – it is God’s university – it

is His instrument – a place set aside for the special purpose of preparing students to fulfill God’s personal and professional calling upon their lives.”

Inauguration Festivities The UM Board of Trustees unanimously selected Smith as president on April 11, 2016. As is customary in higher education, the formal inauguration of the president occurred within the first year of his tenure.

The celebration began Tuesday, March 21, with Night of Prayer, a student-led praise and worship service in Ram Hall.

“Lord, we pray for Dr. Smith. We thank you for what it means to have a leader who chooses Christ daily,” prayed Cam Ulmer, a junior majoring in worship leadership and philosophy who was part of the student Chapel Band that led worship.

They prayed for revival on campus, for students to finish the school year strong, and for the university’s leadership. Near the close of the two-hour service, Smith called faculty and staff to the stage.

“We don’t come to stand before you; we come to stand with you,” Smith told students. “We come to help you understand…that God is real. That what we did tonight, what we do every day at this institution, is about coming to understand Christ, coming to understand who He is, and coming to understand how we can be transformed

by Him.” On Wednesday, faculty and staff gathered at Bedsole Commons in front of J.L. Bedsole Library for a faculty/staff picnic and the first Rammy Awards. Drs. Al Miller and Ted Mashburn presented

25 tongue-in-cheek awards, voted upon by faculty and staff, that included such honors as the Duct Tape Award for being able to fix just about anything, the Early Bird Award for always being first in the office, the Mac & Molly Award for the most school spirit, and the Gumby Award for being most flexible in any situation.

Thursday’s event was “Dinner Under the Stars” for dignitaries and out-of-town guests. Ram Hall was transformed into an elegant banquet hall beneath a starry sky.

Dr. Lonnie Burnett ’79 spoke about the university’s history and the purpose of Christian higher education. Prior to the dinner, guests toured campus on horse-drawn carriages.

Inauguration Day With the theme, “A New Day, A New Journey” and a formal celebration that drew university presidents from across the nation, University of Mobile inaugurated its fourth president on Friday, March 24, 2017.

In his inaugural address, Smith said the purpose of Christian higher education is to equip men and women in preparation for the Great Commission, the biblical charge in Matthew 28:19 to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

The Mace incorporates symbols of the university, including the Seal, torch, ram mascot, the words “Imago Dei,” Weaver Hall and 1961 date of founding. The Christian cross overlaying an outline of the State of Alabama represents the strong relationship between the university and Alabama Baptists. Scripture below the torch is Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

The Chain of Office is worn by the president on official and special occasions.

Links of the chain list the names of former presidents. The medallion incorporates the new Seal of University of Mobile. He related the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, found in Acts 8:2635, in which Philip explained Scripture and told of Jesus Christ, a conversation that led to the eunuch’s conversion to Christianity.

“This is exactly the mission of University of Mobile – we are here to teach and preach about Jesus as a Christ-centered academic community providing liberal arts and professional programs to renew minds through intellectual and spiritual development for the fulfilling of one’s professional calling,” Smith said.

He said the vision he will strive to bring forward is that Jesus Christ continues to be strengthened as the theological core of a university that is built on biblical premises, where academic rigor is integrated with intellectual development and intentional spiritual enrichment, so that the university becomes a premier Christ-centered academic community providing comprehensive liberal arts and professional programs to distinctively transform the world.

He cited Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of 36 TORCHLIGHT | FALL 2017

wisdom…” which describes our calling to Him; Genesis 1:26, “Then God said Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” which describes who we are in Him; and Romans 12:20, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may provide what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” which describes our transformation by Him. “As students undergo this transformational process that is theologically focused on Christ while theoretically balanced with a rich intellectual and spiritual educational process; a caring, mentoring and expansive co-curricular environment that enhances the student’s walk in Christ; and a partnership with the churches and community that continues to shape the minds and hearts of the students, the goal that God has called us to will be achieved,”

Smith said.

“Yes, the core values of University of Mobile in being Christ-centered, academically-focused, student-devoted and, because of these, distinctivelydriven, will have been fulfilled at University of Mobile just as Philip fulfilled the calling on his life of teaching the eunuch. Yes, we will have preached Jesus Christ,” Smith concluded.

Furthering the Kingdom Deborah Robinson Nelson ’76

I

n 1973, Deborah Robinson Nelson ‘76 took some time off from college to plan her wedding.

“Everyone knows wedding time is crazy,” says Nelson.

She had been attending another larger university that “just didn’t feel right,” so she decided to enroll at Mobile College close to home.

“I loved the school – loved the smallness, but it still had a university feel.”

She became involved in the music program, including the Boar’s Head Festival led by Dr. Kenneth Bergdolt.

She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in history in 1976.

Fast forward almost 30 years later – Nelson and her husband, Pat, were introduced to Dr. Roger Breland, who had just established the Center for Performing Arts at University of Mobile. When they saw his unique vision for the School of Music combined

with the inception of music events like Christmas Spectacular, they felt led to begin supporting the university in a greater capacity.

“The thing that really grabbed us was that this was a place where the Lord was made special,” she says, “and we felt led to begin to do some things financially to further the kingdom through the CPA.” Through her involvement with the CPA, Nelson was introduced to former president Dr. Mark Foley.

One day, she received a call asking her to serve on the university’s Board of Trustees.

“Why?” she chuckled.

Nelson was taken aback because of she didn’t have the same corporate work background as many of the other board members. But that didn’t concern Foley.

“I was told, ‘I know that you pray – and I value that for a person on our board’,” she says.

Nelson accepted the request, and has never regretted that decision.

“Being a part of something that glorifies God, where you have a lot of people working together in unity – it’s an amazing thing,” says Nelson.

Last year, she worked closely with then-chairman Fred Wilson as a member of the presidential search committee that selected Dr. Timothy L. Smith as the fourth president of University of Mobile.

“I did not know the kind of glorious experience it would be,” she says. “The heart of everyone in that room was to find God’s man for the job – it was one heart, one mind.”

Led by the Holy Spirit Now, Nelson serves as Chairman of the Board. Her responsibilities include overseeing board meetings and setting the agenda, but she senses a deeper purpose behind it.

“Our position as the Board of

“We could always depend on each other,” said Bruns, who has worked at UM for over 17 years and is now administrative assistant to the vice president for marketing and public relations. “I still can call her at the drop of a hat and she would say, ‘I’m on my way.’ She is there for you.”

Bruns said that dependability, and Deborah’s dependence on God, make her an excellent leader for University of Mobile.

“She is one of those people who make things happen – she is a strong woman with a strong faith,” Bruns said.

Trustees is to help watch over this university,” she said.

Previous board chairman Fred Wilson has worked with Nelson since she began her tenure on the board of trustees. He praised her “great love” for UM, and her conscientiousness.

“Deborah is deeply spiritual,” he says. “She has insight and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.”

Nelson considers herself “grateful to the Lord” for allowing her to serve as board chairman.

“This has been one of the most unified groups of anything I’ve ever been a part of,” she says. “The integrity, character, and love of the Lord that I see in the other board members is a blessing to me. They want to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit and ensure that everything we do has been organized and directed by the Holy Spirit.”

Strong Woman, Strong Faith Cindy Bruns has been friends with Deborah for more than 30 years. In the close-knit community near the university, the women worked together

“We have a man who is going to lead us to a new level,” she says.

For this reason, she says now is the time to partner with UM. “If you want to invest somewhere, you could find no greater place than University of Mobile,” she says. “You’re going to be furthering God’s kingdom, because that’s the heart and soul of this place. You’re helping students become all they can be in their chosen fields, then they go out into the community where their mindset is to give back and help people.”

Nelson has seen her own giving – both finances and time – reap blessings in her life.

“It’s been an adventure – watching God moving in my life in ways that I have never dreamed,” she says. “I love being a part of my old stomping grounds and seeing it grow. I’m just anxious to see what the Lord is going to continue doing.”

UM Ambassadors –

At Your Service

U

niversity of Mobile Ambassadors is a new group of passionate, intelligent student leaders devoted to serving the university and the greater community.

Through a rigorous interview and selection process, 11 students from varying backgrounds were chosen to be in the inaugural class and are considered ambassadors until they graduate.

Ambassadors must go through an intense training process that includes interaction with senior university administration, customer service seminars, emotional intelligence training, and even an overview of dining etiquette. This prepares ambassadors for interaction with community leaders and to represent the university at professional functions.

“They have so much more appreciation for the university after going through this process,” says Lauren McCaghren, senior director for alumni programs and annual giving.

“The skills that they’re learning now they will carry throughout the rest of their lives.”

Andrew Felts, a senior majoring in communication, agrees.

“Being a UM ambassador has molded me more than I could have imagined this past year,” says Felts. “I have noticed growth in my professional and social skills.”

Since being selected in March, UM Ambassadors have been hard at work. They led campus tours for the 50th anniversary of UM’s first graduating class, served at the annual scholarship banquet, and joined the president for community engagements.

Claire Richburg, a senior majoring in sociology and intercultural studies, has enjoyed multiple opportunities to engage with UM alumni.

“My favorite aspect of being an ambassador has been the opportunity to meet and talk to the people who give so much of their lives to UM,” she says.

This fall, ambassadors will continue working as university representatives during major events, including Move-in Day, Ram Rush, Homecoming, Christmas Spectacular and more.

UM Ambassadors’ mission comes from Mark 10:43-45 – specifically Jesus’s words: “whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” According to McCaghren, students selected to be ambassadors must have a servant mindset.

“The entire UM Ambassador experience is ultimately about service,” she says. “We want students who want to be servants to each other and to the university as a whole.”

McCaghren established the UM Ambassadors shortly after beginning her role in the Office for Advancement.

She believes UM students will be challenged and grow professionally by working and serving together for the university.

“This is one of the most fruitful things that I get to do in my role,” she says.

Because the ambassadors is comprised of students with different interests, students gain a greater respect for their peers and the varying challenges they face as students, athletes, performers and leaders.

“They are very diverse – different majors, representing different areas of university,” McCaghren says. “It’s really impressive to see the interaction between them and how they challenge each other.”

Felts believes this experience has given him an even greater respect for the faculty, staff and student body.

“I am looking forward to plugging into the community and promoting University of Mobile,” says Felts. “UM is a university of excellence that genuinely cares for and prepares us for our future career in the real world.”

Overall, McCaghren is impressed with the initiative of the student ambassadors and their eagerness to serve.

“To embody the professionalism, the passion, the hearts they have for the university at that age blows me away,” she says. “They inspire me each and every day.”

A Creative Missionary Katie Allred ’12

By Rivers Brunson Armed with an eye for design, a clever wit, a deep love for people, and the ability to fix anything tech-related, University of Mobile 2012 graduate Katie Allred just may change the world.

Since her launch from UM, Katie has become known as a rising star in the world of church communications.

Officially, she is web content manager at Brentwood Baptist Church, just south of Nashville, TN and adjunct professor at University of Florida.

It is her extracurricular activities, however, that have put her on the map. A regular blogger and podcaster, Katie’s role as administrator of “Church Communications,” a 10,000-member Facebook group, is her biggest claim to fame.

“People will come by the church just to meet me and will shyly come up to me at conferences,” she confessed. “I definitely did not expect that.”

The true mark that sets Katie apart from your average techie is her

Great Commission mindset. She uses the Facebook group, her website katieallred.com, and her personal social media accounts to equip the saints to communicate the gospel to their corner of the internet.

“I’ve always felt the next Great Awakening will happen because the internet was invented,” she said.

“I don’t want us to miss it.”

From UM to Brentwood Katie originally chose University of Mobile for her undergraduate degree because she knew a Christian institution would create a more nurturing environment than a public college, especially in the wake of her father’s death. Once she became a student, she began working in the IT department, learning customer support, the art of cultivating relationships, and “how to fix just about anything.” After graduation, she remained in IT for an additional year.

Katie was elected Student

Government Association’s secretary of technological advancement. Her contributions are still relevant today, including Google’s email platform for student email and each residence hall’s Mac lab and printer.

“It was only after successfully winning the campaign for Mac labs that I realized I would be the one who installed them,” Katie joked.

When asked to name her favorite professor, she rattled off a list of a dozen or so faculty – presumably every professor whose class she took. She credits her instructors with empowering her to think differently about work. A career is not just day-to-day tasks; a career is a calling.

“I loved learning that all work is good work… I enjoyed classes that taught me about how to not only be a good employee, but also how to someday be a good employer.”

The friends she made as an undergraduate?

“Some of the very best people I know.”

It was a fellow student at UM who introduced her to CentriKid, a high-energy summer camp where she was hired as video producer and, in later summers, as production director.

There, she fell in love with creating experiences. She was trained by Darrel Girardier, who would later hire her and become her supervisor at Brentwood Baptist Church. These days she manages the web sites, social media, and email marketing for seven campuses as the mega-church’s web content manager.

“I get paid to tweet and play on Facebook—how cool is that?” she said.

Equipping the Saints After a few years in her role at Brentwood, Katie and Darrel began discussing ways to help smaller churches with marketing and communications. They had just

attended a conference and wanted to keep the conversation going.

They knew that a discussion-driven community would be more helpful than an email blast, so in January 2016 they began “Church Communications,” a request-to-join Facebook group. They set their expectation at 50 members – an appropriate number to include in daily discussions.

They were astonished when the group grew to 10,000 members within 18 months.

The group has become a vibrant community of ministers with the common interest of positioning their churches to share the gospel. It includes representatives from larger-than-life churches like Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and the all-star communications team at Elevation Church, to small church plants looking to grow and older churches looking to revitalize. Its members span the globe from Nashville to the Philippines, Australia, Nigeria and England. There’s hardly a denomination excluded, equipping everyone from Southern Baptists to Mennonites to market their churches well.

Following their popularity on Facebook, Katie and Darrel began The Church Communications Podcast featuring guest experts on topics like “How to Get the Most Out of Instagram,” “Communicating to Millennials,” “Empowering Group Leaders” and “Creating Immersive Experiences.” They hope to launch a conference soon.

“The group grew very quickly, which I consider a success, but fast growth was also difficult,” Katie acknowledged.

“It’s time consuming, so we ended up getting some help from friends we made in the group who now moderate from day-to-day.”

The thought to compete in order to get ahead in her career never occurred

to Katie.

“I just don’t compare myself. We were all created to shine in different ways… My pastor Mike Glenn likes to say, ‘No one has all the gifts, because there’s something about the body of Christ together that brings glory to God in a way that one person cannot.’”

Katie is grateful for the work that God is doing through the group.

She does not take it lightly that she has the opportunity to affect thousands of churches and possibly millions of people. The Church is growing because of the conversation happening and resources being shared in that ask-to-join corner of the internet.

A Great Commission Mindset With the internet now in nearly every country in the world, Katie constantly emphasizes the eternal impact churches and individuals can have through their social media platforms.

“Churches have been connecting people for thousands of years. Now social media is doing that,” she pointed out. “The question is how can we come alongside social media and use it, rather than be replaced by it.”

What does Katie most want churches to know?

“Social media is not a billboard. It’s having a conversation – just like Jesus did. It’s the same evangelism model as the one used in the 1950s with door-to-door evangelism, except in most cases it’s far less threatening.”

She is convinced that churches can no longer go without an effective digital media strategy.

Corporate social media evangelism is not the only method she advocates.

Katie’s own Facebook friends frequently hear the gospel through posts and live broadcasts. Once, she livestreamed daily readings of Proverbs and prayer as a way to engage with her social media friends.

She was surprised to find that many of the people who engaged with those posts were the ones she had thought least likely.

Another way she contributes to kingdom work is serving with Creative Missions (www.creativemissions. to). Alongside 25 missionaries from across the United States and the United Kingdom, Katie has volunteered her expertise to church planters and missionaries in Vermont and Montana.

The teams aided churches with branding, web presence, social media, audio and video.

“We did this because it’s a costly service and we wanted to bless church plants who are just getting started,” she said.

Katie’s contribution to the Great Commission is simple: “Paul wrote letters. We write social media posts.”

A Singular Focus There’s no denying that Katie has dreams of expansion for the Church Communications Facebook community. She plans to start with a conference. After writing the forward for “ReThink.Ministry,” she hopes to eventually do some writing of her own.

Ultimately, she desires to be in the center of God’s will.

For now, that means tweeting, designing websites, and helping the Church use the internet well.

“Something I learned during undergrad at UM is that God is also the God of technology, not just the God of the natural world. I’ve seen Him bring back broken computers from the dead and I’ve seen Him fix light shows in just the nick of time during production. He can move even when we don’t think He can. He cares about Facebook groups, even though there are no worship songs about Macs.

“He is good and faithful in all things,” she said. “Even the tech.”

A Tiny Home with Big Vision Adam Moats ’13 Samantha Moats ’14

There is so much in today’s society telling us we need more. The pressures to live up to the American dream can sometimes feel more like a nightmare. It has become easy to lose sight of what’s important in life, getting caught up in having it all or keeping up with the Jones’s.

University of Mobile alumni Samantha and Adam Moats are among a small group of individuals who have rejected the normal way of living in hopes of simplifying their lives and focusing more on following the calling God has placed on them.

The couple recently moved out of their home in historic Chickasaw and into a 30-foot vintage Airstream that they have transformed into their home on wheels.

Samantha graduated in 2014 with a degree in English literature and Adam graduated in 2013 with a degree in intercultural studies. Both native Alabamians, they met and fell in love while attending the university and stayed in Mobile. They have been passionate about making a positive impact in the city of Mobile since starting college, and see their move as one way to accomplish that.

They are looking forward to the freedom the Airstream will bring. It’s an opportunity to travel, meet new people, follow their calling wherever God may lead them. It’s a time to learn and grow closer to one another and to all they will meet along the way.

As Samantha and Adam embark on

this journey, they are fielding a lot of questions about tiny living. Today, they answered a few.

Q. When you think about “home,” what comes to mind? How would you define it?

Samantha: I think home is far less a placeholder and more about people, connections and intentionality. You really can be at home anywhere, but what ties you to a place isn’t so much the stuff you do there; it’s about the connections you have with other people. That’s what made Mobile home. I love this city, I love the big city idea with a small town feel, but you can really be at home anywhere as long as you’re meeting with other people, whether they’re your relatives, friends or perfect strangers you find a connection with.

I think a lot about Christ when I think about home, because we know from scripture that foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head. That’s because He spent His time on earth investing in others, and as Christians we are called to the same thing — no matter what type of home you live in.

Q. What made you guys want to live in a tiny home?

Samantha: When we first got married and started looking for our first home in Mobile, we really fell in love with the shotgun houses because they were smaller and had a quaint cottage feel that was still in the city. So while living there, we realized this wasn’t as daunting as we thought it would be. It’s

pretty feasible. It was scary because it was more of a challenge.

Adam: Honestly, looking back on the past two years, we have been in a house three sizes bigger than our first house. Moving out of our house in Chickasaw was terrible because of all the junk we collected in those two years. We realized it just gave us more space to fill with things; you just fill rooms to fill rooms. At the end of the day, really, the reason that it came up was when we starting thinking about Samantha going to grad school, we thought, Why would we want to rent something, put money into nothing, in a city we had no intentions of staying in? Why not do a tiny home?

Samantha: It’s what pushed us; we really didn’t want to be a poor steward of our resources. We didn’t want to put money into something temporary when we could put it in something that would be lasting. It also means we have more opportunities to go and do anything.

Life doesn’t have to be specific to a city anymore; I can do school and work and have this home that’s on wheels. We can take it wherever we go and, at the end of the day, we are still homeowners.

Q. What has been the biggest challenge in getting the Airstream livable?

Adam: Personally, I feel like the biggest struggle for us was that we couldn’t be there all the time (to renovate the Airstream). Our Airstream was in Prattville, Alabama, which is about two hours away from Mobile.

So we had to go up pretty much every weekend for the past year to work, but luckily my dad has been so supportive and a huge help with working on it. He has put so much of his own time into it.

There is not a doubt in our minds that if it wasn’t for him, there’s no way we would have been done this year.

Samantha: Absolutely. But yeah, leaving on the weekends was hard because weekends are times friends get together. We miss out, and we’ve really had to make an effort to keep up with everyone online, but our friends have been great even with the

Q. Has downsizing been hard for you? Has it maybe revealed anything interesting about you guys as individuals or even as a couple?

Adam: Downsizing really hasn’t been too challenging because we’ve been there before, but we are sentimental sometimes, and most people are. Most people hold onto things because those things have

simple encouraging text message or phone call. It’s been really important to us.

Adam: More practically, it’s been a combination of things.

We’ve taken this thing and really started from scratch.

We started with what it looked like in 1982 and stripped down to the bare bones, making sure every little detail was correct and done right so it would last.

some sort of sentimentality to them.

Samantha: For us, letters and cards really are the one thing that holds the most sentiment. I mean, I have cards from my grandmother that have been with me since my 12th birthday and made it through dorm rooms, apartments, two houses. So, why not hold on to them a little longer? They’ve made it this far.

But those are really the only sentimental things we have, and they’ve kind of been a mark of our relationship as well, Adam knowing early on my affinity for words, the written word in particular, and catering to that. I still have the first letter he ever wrote me, and that’s important to me. So, we are getting creative, trying finding solutions to store and showcase those items.

Q. So what are your plans for the future?

Samantha: For most people, moving into a tiny home is a permanent solution, but we just aren’t sure it will be for us. We think three to five years is a good timeframe to work with, so when three years gets here we will reevaluate and see where we feel God wants us to go for the next season of

our lives.

Adam: I’ll say this, a lot of people say, “What about kids? Are you going to have a kid in the Airstream?” We say, “Sure, why not?” But I know that to some people it may not look like the most ideal situation, having a kid in a camper, if you will.

Samantha: Yes. Somehow in our American society we’ve gotten to a place where we associate “little” with “lacking.” That’s not to say there is anything wrong with having a lot, but it boils down to stewardship, being responsible for what you do have, and we hope to instill that principle into our children one day.

But I’m perfectly content with the mystery of it all.

Q. Do you have any advice for people who may be wanting to transition to this lifestyle or just pursue any dream, for that matter?

Samantha: Think about what it is that you value in your house. Because at the end of the day it comes down to what you value in your home, which is why it’s not a problem to have much or to have little. One thing we did before making the move: we lived out of two rooms in our house and pretended the

rest didn’t exist. We closed them off and lived out of our kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. It really showed us that we didn’t need a lot of the stuff we owned. So I would say start paring down, going through your things and asking, “Do I really need this?”

Adam: It can sometimes be an overly romanticized lifestyle. I think we have so many dreams, Samantha and I. This has been one of those that we have had for a while. So asking ourselves, what’s holding us back, and we realized nothing was, so we went for it!

Samantha: We also spent some time praying about it, and when it finally happened, we felt at peace about everything. So if you ask yourself, “What’s holding you back?” and the answer is nothing, maybe spend a little more time thinking and praying, asking if this is what God has for you.

Adam: I really feel like this is where the Lord was leading us. After everything happened and it all lined up, we had to ask ourselves, “Are we going to trust Him or just sit back and play it safe?”

Samantha: That’s really when we realized it was all put together by the Lord. That’s something to note. When big life decisions start to line up, and you can’t explain it, that’s when you need to find yourself at the foot of the cross. ’70s

David Faulkner ’71 began working at the National Training Center in Slippery Rock, PA in August of 2015.

He and his wife Belinda have two grandchildren from their daughter, Stephanie, and her husband Dan. Their son, Jeremy, is married and living in Central Florida.

Richard T. Green ’76 retired from the military with the rank of major after serving as an army chaplain in both Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. He now works as a chaplain at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA, where he resides with his wife Janice Duke Green ’76.

Nancy Ivey Megginson ’06 is an RN at DCH Northport Medical Center Women’s Pavilion. She resides in Tuscaloosa, AL with her husband Chris.

Meghan Dove ’08 recently started as manager in community marketing and citizenship at RBC where she focuses on the bank’s overall brand within Canada. She works with sponsorship events, such as golf, hockey and community marketing campaigns and marketing strategies for new bank openings. She resides in Ontario, Canada.

Dustin Lee ’10 and Danielle Lee ’11 reside in Dothan, AL with their two children Kate (3) and Brady (6 months). Danielle teaches PE and coaches volleyball and soccer at Providence Christian School. Dustin is the general manager for Eagle Eye Outfitters, a family-owned, faith-based, outdoor specialty retailer, and also serves as assistant director of the company’s non-profit. In addition, he serves as student pastor at Mt. Gilead Baptist and is on the boards for Wiregrass Habitat for Humanity and Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes.

He recently completed his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Krystin Jolly Porter ’10 obtained a master’s degree in counseling from Sam Houston State University and is currently finishing a Ph.D. in counselor education. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor & Marriage and Family Therapist with Woodlands Family Institute and resides in Spring, TX with her husband Rick.

Adam Morris ’11 and Nicole Morris ’13 reside in Covington, LA where Adam is an associate pastor at Bogue Falaya Baptist Church and Nicole is an RN at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. They have a 1-year-old son, Jude.

Catherine Alderman ’85 resides in Durham, NC with her husband Tony Alderman ’83. Catherine is the owner of Alderman Music Studios and Tony is the owner of Tony Alderman Arts.

Endel Lee ’87 was promoted to Rear Admiral with the Navy. He and his wife Kathy Lee ’87 welcomed their first granddaughter.

Katrina Morrison Brown ’94 is Chief Nursing Officer/Chief Operating Officer of Providence Hospital.

Lee Moons ’95 recently joined the Mobile County Commission as a Compliance and Policy Officer.

Mary Paille Mochon ’00 lives in Covington, LA with her husband of 9 years, Andre. They have three children, Grace (5), Henry (4), and Patrick (2).

Tracey Henry ’02 was named a 2017 Presidential Leadership Scholar after a rigorous application and review process. As a member of the program, she will learn from former presidents, key administration officials, and leading academics.

Malory Green Ford ’13 graduated with her Master of International Journalism degree in May 2015 and moved to Montgomery to work with Alabama WMU where she met and married her husband, Jared, in May 2016.

Brady King ’13 and Emily King ’14 reside in Mobile, AL. Brady is a Chemical Engineer with Precision Engineering and Emily is a 1st grade teacher at Robert E. Lee Elementary.

Joshua Barber ’14 married Michelle Tew Barber ’13 in October 2014, and their son, Joshua Jr., was born March 29, 2016. They moved to Louisville, KY in August 2016 in pursuit of a Masters of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. They have found a local church home, and Joshua is currently employed as a salesman for an AT&T dealer while they wait on the Lord’s call to a church.

Brittany Dunson ’14 is a physical education teacher at Demopolis High School where she coaches volleyball and softball and enjoys driving the school bus in her spare time. She has become an amateur golfer.

Laurel Green ’14 recently opened her own State Farm Insurance Agency in Saraland, AL. Rachel Kotlan ’14 serves as a CVICU staff nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Her unit is ranked second in the nation and cares for children from all over the world with congenital heart defects. In her off time, she works at Missio Dei church in Houston’s East end neighborhood. She is thankful for the years she spent at UM in which God prepared her for this life adventure.

Clay Wyatt ’14 resides in Birmingham, AL where he serves as high school ministry associate at Shades Mountain Baptist Church and is completing his M.Div. through the Beeson School of Divinity.

Kayleigh Clinkenbeard ’16 was named membership director/ administrative assistant for HearinChandler Family YMCA. Caroline Ennis ’16 has been accepted into Florida State University’s Master of Fine Arts studio arts program. She received a full tuition scholarship and a teaching assistantship, and was one of only three students accepted for the program.

Molly Speed ’16 is in graduate school at the University of Southern Mississippi where she is pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling.

She also serves as the graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team.
