PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
DEAR GRADUATES,
Words cannot describe the profound pride I feel in conferring your well-earned and well-learned degrees.
Today is a day for celebration! Please let me be the first to offer my most sincere and heartfelt congratulations for all that you have done for this university. This institution is a better learning community because of your unique contributions. We admire you for advancing into the next phase of life and setting sail on an adventure of self-discovery and leadership. The skills you learned during your time here will propel you forward into a future filled with success.
Your hard work, perseverance, and commitment to greatness is what brought this community together, today. Yet, despite the challenges of new learning modalities and never-before-seen social restrictions, your drive to succeed, connect, and continue building community has prevailed.
Your tenacious class of go-getters and community-changers will now proudly join the ranks of nearly 89,000 ULV alumni across 66 countries worldwide.
You are joining a legacy of over 130 years of excellence. I am truly honored to send the ‘Class of 2024’ into a world that will be forever enhanced by your unwavering commitment to positive and lasting change.
SINCERELY,
Pardis Mahdavi, PhD President

History
HISTORY
The University of La Verne was founded in 1891 as Lordsburg College by members of the Church of the Brethren. Both the college and the agricultural community were renamed La Verne in 1917, and the 1920s and 1930s found three-quarters of the student body focused on learning and career paths in education.
Over the next four decades, enrollment surged, campus facilities quadrupled, and the Board of Trustees became independent of religious influence. Change came again in the 1960s, when the college awarded its first master’s degrees and began offering degree programs at off campus locations. By 1969, the school officially opened its College of Law.
In 1977, the college was renamed the University of La Verne, and two years later, the university conferred its first doctorate degree. The university founded its first regional campus in Orange County in 1981, and its San Fernando Valley campus opened in 1983. A separate campus for the updated College of Law and Public Service was established in Ontario in 2000.
Over the last 20 years, the University of La Verne has renovated or newly constructed more than half of the buildings on the past decade, creating a dramatic change to the look of its central campus. Some of the larger projects included a remodeled Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion, the Johnson Family Plaza, the Sara and Michael Abraham Campus Center, Vista La Verne Residence Hall, a five-level parking structure, and the Campus West athletics complex, home to the university's baseball and softball teams.
2
In 2018, the central campus opened a residence hall named Citrus Hall, and a dining hall known as The Spot. These new buildings completed the burgeoning student village along with Vista, The Oaks Residence Hall, and the Sara and Michael Abraham Campus Center. In recent years, the Randall Lewis Center for Well-Being and Research and the Ludwick Center for Spirituality, Cultural Understanding, and Community Engagement were built to give the university community spaces to collaborate, engage in dialogue, and develop their well-being both mentally and physically.
Today, the University of La Verne has campuses throughout California and a robust range of programs online. It continues to grow regionally and nationally, while honoring its profound history with each new class. More than 89,000 proud alumni share a deep-rooted connection to the University of La Verne and to its mission and values.

Academic Regalia ACADEMIC REGALIA
The caps, gowns, and hoods worn in all academic ceremonies today are modified versions of clothing worn in medieval times. The priests and monks who taught in the early universities—Bologna, Paris, Oxford—wore gowns and hoods to their lectures, probably for warmth in the damp, unheated halls where classes were held.
Today’s modern hoods are more colorful. Hood linings carry the colors of the degree-granting institution. The University of La Verne’s colors are orange and green. All candidates receiving degrees today will wear these colors. On undergraduate, master’s and doctoral hoods, the color of the hood facings represent the academic discipline in which the degree has been granted—white for arts, letters or humanities; golden yellow for science; brown for commerce or business; light blue for education; turquoise for public administration; and salmon for health administration.
Another distinguishing element is the length of the gown. The variation in length signifies the type of degree held by the wearer. The sleeves of the three types of gowns have different lengths and cuts. Bachelor's gowns are cut shorter and have wide sleeves. Master's gowns are longer on the body and have longer, closed sleeves, while the sleeves on doctoral gowns have three horizontal velvet stripes, and a vertical facing in velvet down the front of the gown itself. Most American institutions have adopted black gowns, although some use other colors.
Opinions differ concerning the origin of the caps worn in academic ceremonies, and one view is that the “mortar board” represents the books carried by scholars. The tassels worn on the caps vary in color. For some institutions, they represent the degree held by the wearer, but in most cases, they are black. Bachelor's tassels are green unless they receive school honors. These additional colored tassels vary by title and come in white, silver, and gold. Master's tassels are black. Doctoral tassels come in either black or gold. Additionally, the University of La Verne follows the tradition that the tassel is worn on the right side of the cap until after a student’s bachelor degree has been conferred.

Speakers SPEAKERS
Yasmin Davidds
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE
The university welcomes Dr. Yasmin Davidds as a speaker for the 2024 commencement ceremonies.
Dr. Yasmin Davidds is the CEO of the Yasmin Davidds Leadership Institute, as well as President and CEO of the Multicultural Women Executive Leadership Foundation. She partnered with USC’s Marshall School of Business and a plethora of nonprofits to share innovative techniques and strategies for directing business plan development, designing partnership models, and creating the first programs in the United States to approach critical leadership skills from a gender-based, cultural and global perspective. Additionally, her leadership and advocacy for women in leadership positions earned her 19 awards that span across her career, and seven published works to her name. Her commitment to the empowerment and development of women leaders brought her recognition and acclaim from the U.S. Congress, the California State Senate and the California State Assembly. She was recognized and highlighted as one of the top Leading Latinas by Hispanic Magazine and as one of the most influential Latinas in “The Book of Latina Women.” She is also a certified Emotional Intelligence practitioner.
Davidds holds a doctorate in organizational psychology from Phillips Graduate Institute, a master’s degree in liberal arts from San Diego State University, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from USC.
6

Acknowledgements ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Thank you to all the faculty, staff, students, and contracted agents who assisted in planning and coordinating the Commencement Ceremonies for the class of 2024. These memorable moments for our graduates and their guests would not have been possible without the great dedication and hard work of so many of our community members and alumni as volunteers. We appreciate the Leo Spirit of every person involved in producing these ceremonies.
