At Huddersfield we’re passionate about engineering; it’s where are our roots lie, as The Technical School and Mechanics’ Institute formed in 1884. Our innovative research helps to inform our teaching and ensure that what you study is contemporary and relevant.

Engineers help to improve people’s lives; they overcome problems, invent new ways of doing things and help create everything from awesome structures to entire transport networks.

Our courses give you the opportunity to develop expertise in a variety of areas. We offer four course levels: • MEng – Integrated Master’s course lasting four years (five with a placement year). Extends your undergraduate studies to Master’s level within a single course.

• BEng(Hons) – Bachelor’s degree course lasting three years (four with a placement year).

• Top-up – for those who’ve already completed two years of Higher Education study in a related subject.

• Foundation Year – preparation year for undergraduate study.

In the last three years we have invested £200k in new equipment for our engineering students.

Some of our students gaining great experience on placement working for Vauxhall.

Our facilities are typical of what you would find in engineering companies.

They include design and analysis software, an advanced automotive laboratory with vehicle and engine test facilities (including a 4 – post ride simulator), a railway locomotive test facility, a wind tunnel and thermal imaging labs.

In the real-world engineers with different skills work together on projects, so we provide opportunities for you to experience this by working on exciting projects with students from other courses. You could have the opportunity to join a team of students entering the IMechE’s Railway Challenge, or the chance to join our Formula Student team.

You can also work with students from across the University through our Honeypot and ICE projects. These offer you the chance to take part in lectures, workshops and design challenges set by external companies.

Previous companies have included the BBC, Pacific Lifestyle and SPX ClydeUnion.

This course gives you the opportunity to develop fundamental skills in automotive engineering and apply them to real life scenarios through your projects. For example, there is a chance for you to join our racing team, Team Hare, and get hands-on with the design, development and build of a single seat Formula Student car. You could then take part in the international competition events held at Silverstone and in Hungary.

Your learning is supported by a fully equipped automotive laboratory (from Year 2 onwards) and our expert technicians who will help to guide you through your practical work.

Providing sustainable energy sources is one of the greatest challenges facing engineers today. The energy industry is centred on large scale electrical power generation and distribution, but there is also a drive to improve how we use energy in our everyday lives, through producing heat and power from renewable sources.

Engineering Foundation Year leading to a BEng(Hons)

The Foundation Year has been designed to provide an excellent route into studying engineering, particularly if you do not hold the usual academic qualifications required or if you’re looking for a career change.

Key information: UCAS code: H108 Duration: year 0 of a 4-5 year degree Entry requirements: CC at A Level MPP at BTEC 64 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications including one A Level pass

The Foundation Year is not a stand-alone course but it’s the first year of your studies leading to a BEng or MEng degree in our Electronic or Mechanical Engineering subject areas at Huddersfield.

To progress on to the degree you must gain an average mark of 50% and have passed each module of the Foundation Year.

Dr Krzystof Kubiak Senior Lecturer, Department of Engineering and Technology

“When I was very young I wanted to be a truck driver, I was fascinated by cars and big vehicles in particular. I was always taking apart my toys to find out how they moved, but I never got in trouble as I could always put them back together!

“I’m from Poland and I completed my first degree there. I moved to France to do my PhD, where I worked for a while before coming to the UK. I’ve moved around but I think this is the place where I will stay. The research at Huddersfield is very industry driven and the close links with industry make it a great place to be.

“I’ve always been interested in experimental research and I think it’s important to approach a problem from different angles to help you find the solution.

It’s rewarding to know I’ve helped prepare students for the real-world to go out and make a difference to people’s lives.

“I encourage my students to do this, particularly when I’m supervising their final year projects.

“I enjoy seeing the students achieve their goals and develop the capabilities to solve engineering problems, by putting all the theory into practice. In every module I teach there’s a ‘light bulb moment’ when everything clicks into place for the students. The students then have a level of understanding that means we can discuss things differently.”
