Welcome to Computing Computing is a dynamic, ever-growing field and our courses at the University of Huddersfield reflect that dynamism. Our courses have been designed to equip you with all the practical and theoretical skills you’ll need to really make an impact in the industry, whatever your area of interest.

During your time with us you’ll have support from staff who have a wealth of professional experience both in industry and in research. Our staff are undertaking research that’s relevant to the world around us, research that they can bring into their teaching. With a predicted a shortfall of 900,000 adequately skilled programmers (and other technology professionals) in Europe by 2020 **, there’s lots of opportunities for computing graduates.

Our courses have a strong focus on programming and cover the design, development and support of software. They’ve been designed with input from industry to ensure the content is relevant and contemporary. With a common thread running across some courses in Year 1, you may have the option of switching courses if you discover an interest in a new area.

We offer three course levels: • MEng/MSci/MComp – Integrated Master’s course lasting four years (five with placement). It extends

your studies to Master’s level. All are fully accredited by the BCS***.

• BSc – Bachelor’s degree course lasting three years (four with placement). Most of these are partially accredited by the BCS †.

• Top-up – for those who’ve already completed two years of Higher Education study in a related subject.

All our degrees have flexible options allowing you to tailor your studies.

Our full-time, 3-4 year courses offer you the chance of spending a year on placement gaining contacts, skills and experience.

Our industry standard facilities include high-end PCs with dual monitors; Windows, Linux and Apple Mac workstations; Adobe Suite and Autodesk 3ds Max. Throughout your time with us you’ll be supported by passionate academic and technical staff, who have years of industry and professional experience.

Previous graduates from courses in this subject area have gone on to work for organisations including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Vodafone and Oracle.

They work with computer based technology and technology that allows people to share information digitally, exploring ways in which communications can be integrated, for example linking telecommunications with computer networks.

“I’m from a village near Hull. It’s very rural, everyone knows one another and my grandparents owned the local pub. I wanted to experience living somewhere else and I came to two Open Days here and loved the feel of the place.

“As a child I wanted to be an inventor. I wrote all my inventions in a book, I can’t decipher it now but I do remember making some inventions out of paper clips and string!

“I created my first computer programmes and websites when I was 12. Initially I didn’t want to turn my hobby into a career, but I created an extension for Safari when

I was 14 and Apple promoted it on their website. At least 60,000 people downloaded it and I received emails saying thank you. The knowledge that software can help improve people’s lives made me realise this was what I wanted to do.

“At the end of my placement I applied for a scholarship to attend the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. On my application I talked about my placement and how I’m interested in developing software that helps disabled people. I won a free ticket to the event in San Francisco and went to a dedicated student event where I was able to network with developers.

“My ambition after graduation is to work at Apple. It’s Eventually, I’d like to work tough competition but that’s for myself and create a my dream.”

Encouraging women into computing

Dr Diane Kitchin Senior Lecturer, Department of Informatics

“Growing up I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. At one point I liked the idea of being a TV researcher, looking up facts for programmes - and part of my job now involves research in Artificial Intelligence Planning.

I feel many women miss out on a career in computing and I’m keen to combat this.

I’m really keen to combat this, especially through initiatives like Athena Swan. I’m a member of the School Athena Swan Committee and the University currently holds the Bronze Award.

“My first degree was in English, but after my children were born I decided to do something different so I applied for the Computing MSc conversion course at Huddersfield. I “After my Master’s I had the knew a bit about computing opportunity to undertake a and I’d done a small amount funded PhD. UCAS If you want to apply for a first (undergraduate) degree, you need to submit your application via UCAS. Go to www.ucas.com If your present school or college is registered with UCAS (chances are they will be) just ask your teacher or careers adviser for help.
