Our forensic and analytical science degrees can open doors to a

variety of career opportunities, not just in forensic science but in the wider analytical sciences sectors.

These may include crime scene investigation, toxicology and the pharmaceuticals industry. Building on the saying that ‘to be a good forensic scientist, you first need to be a good scientist’, the dual focus of our courses, on both real-world forensic science and industry-relevant analytical science, is designed to help maximise your employability.

You’ll have the chance to gain hands-on experience in our modern science laboratory facilities using analytical instrumentation including scanning electron microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, ultra-violet spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (hplc).

You’ll also have the opportunity to go on a placement in the third year of your course, which can provide you with the chance to put theory into practice and gain real-world experience. This can be valued by employers and help to enhance your employability after you graduate.

Chemistry with Forensic Science

Graduates employed:

BSc(Hons) If you’re interested in forensic science as a possible career, but you also enjoy chemistry then this course could be ideal for you. This course includes a focus on forensic science simply defined as the application of science to the law and is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Key information: UCAS code: F1F4 Duration: 3 years full-time 4 years inc. placement year Entry requirements: BBC** at A Level inc. a min. grade C in Chemistry.

DMM at BTEC in Applied Science. Alternatively a BTEC Health and Social Care/Medicinal Science is acceptable but must be accompanied by an A Level in Chemistry at a min. grade C.

Our staff have expertise in academia and industry and we’ve modern science laboratory facilities too.

You’ll have the chance to gain hands-on experience in a range of experiments in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Analytical chemistry, which is central to forensic chemistry, is given equal weighting with organic, inorganic and physical chemistry on this course. The forensic science modules cover everything from the investigation of the crime scene and the collection of evidence, through to which forensic analysis techniques are available, to the presentation of evidence in a court of law.

Analytical science is a major discipline with applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical and related industries, hospitals and analytical service laboratories.

Forensic scientists work in forensic service providers such as LGC Forensics and Key Forensics, police laboratories and independent laboratories and consultancies.

Science Extended Degree leading to a BSc(Hons) degree

Key information: UCAS code: BCF0 Duration: Full-time (Year 0 of a 4/5 years degree including placement year) Entry requirements: CCE at AÂ Level MMP at BTEC. This does not need to be in a technical or Science subject.

80 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications.

Applicants with no formal educational qualifications will be required to complete an aptitude test and demonstrate ability to benefit from the course either by evidence of previous study or satisfactory completion of the test.

“When I was about seven I wanted to be a detective. I was given a book about detection and immediately started investigating my neighbourhood. Later, I discovered archaeology and anthropology, which is also about gleaning information from few clues.

I really enjoy helping my undergraduate students learn about the skeleton and understand new concepts in forensic science.
