BA(Hons) This course offers you a distinctive approach to the subject of architecture based upon a consideration of places and cultures around the world.

You’ll have the opportunity to examine different cultural regions and design your own innovative, beautiful, humane and sustainable architecture in response.

You will have the chance to develop skills to operate in global multidisciplinary design and construction teams, with the support of the latest processes and technology, such as Building Information Modelling.

Construction Project Management

Global construction project managers play a key role in ensuring the effective translation of building designs into completed projects. This involves the co-ordination of various professions and trades including clients, users, designers and contractors to ensure successful project outcomes, considering project complexity as well as time, cost and quality constraints.

This course will help you to develop the skills required for a career in the global construction industry. You’ll be supported in developing your understanding of the diverse stages of global construction projects, from the development of the client’s brief through to design, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance of built assets.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop excellent leadership

skills, as well as skills in Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM) from world-leading industry practitioners and academics.

Lean thinking is a key aspect in providing a more sustainable global built environment. You’ll explore why it is important to reduce all types of waste in projects, the importance of generating better value through design and construction, and the major role that technologies such as BIM play in this. BIM enables the complexities of global collaborative construction projects to be addressed by all parties, both physically and virtually. This means that the regulatory environment and investment decisions as well as costs, time and quality of projects can be managed more effectively, generating better value for clients and society.

The Building Surveying course aims to prepare you to become a professional, able to operate in the global construction industry. This course particularly focuses on UK and international surveying practices and the latest digital technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM). It provides you with the opportunity to develop skills in Lean Construction and BIM, which are on governments’ construction agendas worldwide, in addition to the core competences of a Building Surveyor. You’ll have the chance to develop the necessary skills to support better value generation for clients, improve processes and reduce waste in design and construction.

The course provides opportunities to develop technical, professional, legal and managerial competences

to survey property, diagnose defects, design and alter premises, manage contracts and provide professional advice to clients. Particular emphasis will be placed on compliance with the regulatory requirements of refurbishment and new build projects, for example the 2015 Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.

This degree forms part of an integrated suite of architecture and built environment courses. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to work on multidisciplinary projects with peers from other courses, such as Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Construction Project Management. While the Quantity Surveyor’s primary task is to manage costs and value within both the design and construction phases, their involvement in the construction

process also includes managing construction contracts, advising on construction procurement methods, managing risks (specifically from the cost and value point of view) of construction projects, and quantifying construction work.

This course will help you to develop the skills needed to work in design and construction teams, applying state-of-the-art processes and technologies.

Hear what Kaushal enjoys about teaching surveying

“It’s not the graduation ceremony that I enjoy the most,” explains Kaushal Keraminiyage. “It’s when I look into the eyes of my students and see the enjoyment that they’ve gained from what they’ve learned. It reminds me of the journey that I’ve gone on with each one of them.”

“After graduating as a Quantity Surveyor, I applied for scholarships in the UK, and I was offered a scholarship to read for my PhD. During my PhD I was offered an academic position.” After Kaushal grew up in Sri Lanka more than twelve years and had a childhood ambition working in academia, Kaushal to be an engineer. “I had a joined the University of passion for electronics and IT.
