From the President Climbing the steps to my office in Old Main, I often wonder, if these walls could talk, what stories would they tell? From the red seats of Ritz Auditorium to the saddles on horses at our farms, and from the weight room at Koehler Recreation Center to the corner table at Henderson Dining Hall, campus exploits and mishaps are shared, whispered, laughed over. In the past several months, I have enjoyed listening to many great memories, along with stories that are still in the making. During Homecoming, radio station DJs happily recalled their time on the air at WLFC 88.3 FM. Oiler football players reminisced about past victories as we celebrated the new Dick Strahm Champions Field. Graduates of many decades recounted their own adventures since their March through the Arch.

As this edition of FindlayMag highlights the “Strong Roots and Bright Future” of the University, these stories ground us in the past and turn us confidently toward the future. Students come to UF excited and nervous, optimistic and hesitant, with hopes to forge a great future. They arrive at a campus with a 141-year-old tradition of welcoming and teaching Oilers. In preparing for meaningful lives and productive careers, students must find their own calling. Our calling—past, present, and future—is to help them do that. Griffith Memorial Arch By Bridget Muñóz The Griffith Memorial Arch has been the gateway to campus since its dedication on November 28, 1923. Framing the heart of campus and Old Main, the Arch is symbolic of new beginnings and celebrations. This year, the University commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Arch, acknowledging the role it has played in originating one of UF’s most honored traditions. At the start of each academic year, faculty and staff welcome incoming students and their families with the annual Arch Ceremony. This marks not only the start of a new school year but also the beginning of the next chapter in the lives of first-year students. Students process through the Arch toward Old Main during orientation weekend to symbolize the official start of their college experience at Findlay. The incoming Arch Ceremony is anticipated by students, faculty and staff, family members, and friends, but this revered celebration was not initially considered when developing the Griffith Memorial Arch.

Named in memory of Caddie Griffith who graduated from Findlay College in 1909, the structure was funded by her parents following her untimely death from influenza in February 1923. Caddie Griffith served as head of the English department at Findlay College from 1914-1917 and had a special connection to her alma mater. Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Griffith wanted to ensure her legacy remained prevalent on campus for years to come and hoped the Arch would serve as a rite of passage for students entering the world following college graduation: With Christian fortitude and invincible faith, her [Caddie Griffith’s] loved ones have arisen from the first shock of her homegoing, and erected an arch at the gateway of her Alma Mater, beneath which class succeeding class shall pass in hopeful review into the larger life for which their training has fitted them. Just as Mr. and Mrs. Griffith intended, it is tradition that students process

through the Arch toward Main Street following Commencement and are celebrated once again by faculty, staff, and their loved ones. It is believed the first class to engage in the Commencement Arch Ceremony was Findlay College Class of 1924. Campus lore cautions students against walking through the Arch at any point before Commencement day for fear they will not graduate. In keeping with the superstition, students had worn a path in the grass surrounding the structure to avoid jinxing themselves. As a result, the University installed sidewalks around the outside of the Arch in 1990. Additionally, Findlay College changed its name to University of Findlay in 1989 after significantly increasing the number of undergraduate and graduate programs offered. To acknowledge this triumph, the institution engraved “The University of Findlay” on the opposite side of the Griffith Memorial Arch and turned it around to face Main Street. Today, the original "Findlay College"

inscription faces Old Main as a constant reminder of the institution’s roots and continued advancement. Construction of the Griffith Memorial Arch not only paid tribute to Caddie Griffith and her contributions to Findlay College but also embodied the nature of the institution for the public. In the October 1923 edition of Findlay College’s school newspaper The Argus, a student details the importance of the entrance:

The memorial arch in process of construction at the main entrance to the college campus adds much to the beauty of the grounds. Its sole value is not, however, in the realm of the ornamental. It has a practical value in revealing to passersby the nature of our institution. No longer need strangers make haphazard guesses as to the purpose of the big building in the center of a beautiful 10-acre campus… They will need only glance at the inscription on the entrance gate, and they will know that they are entering the grounds of Findlay College.

University of Findlay, now known for its beloved Arch, has established itself and earned a place amongst accredited universities in Ohio. A campus landmark for 100 years, the Griffith Memorial Arch is a testament to the progress that has been made over the last century. The Arch has long embodied new beginnings and celebrations for our community, and its traditions will remain an integral part of UF campus culture.

STRONG ROOTS, BRIGHT FUTURE Stories that make up the heart of the University of Findlay – funny, touching, life-changing, inspiring – were captured this fall in a project by the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). “As an English professor, I’m aware of the power of stories—and who better to tell the story of UF than the people who have contributed to it?” said Christine Denecker, Ph.D., associate vice president for learning and innovation, and director of CTE. “We chose the ‘Strong Roots. Bright Future’ theme as a way to remind all of us at UF that we’re a part of something bigger than ourselves–something that was

here before us and something that will endure after us,” she explained. “We are part of UF’s story, and that’s a unique privilege in that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and we have an obligation to continue the University’s mission for the next generations of Oilers.” Faculty and staff members – both longtime and new – participated in the video story series sharing their favorite memories. They were asked about beloved UF traditions, special places on campus, and what lies ahead for Oiler Nation. On the following pages are some excerpts. of athletics, started in 1998. "I will never forget my very first Arch ceremony. You see the students walk down the walk, and I remember the chills that I had. Because it’s like, holy cow! This is the gateway to setting them up for the rest of their lives. The impact that has on people is amazing. Because kids who come back, five or 10 years later, one of the first things they say is ‘after I walked out of that Arch, I did this.’”

immediate connections with students as the new year begins.“When the students come, they’re moving all their stuff into the farm. They’re a little bit nervous, and you try to be friendly and get to know them. I always put myself in their shoes, because I was a nervous freshman, and I was homesick when I first came here. I can relate to that.”

It’s kind of funny because some of them are like, ‘Do I really have to do this?’ And then four years later, it’s like ‘I haven’t walked through the Arch since I’ve been here. And I’ve really changed.’”

admissions events, started in 1983. She fondly recalls the night in 1992 when the Oiler football team won the national championship.“My youngest was three years old, and we had a foster son

in the football program. The team came back at 2 a.m., and we, the community, all met out in the front drive. I brought my three-year-old along. There were tons of people out there to greet them. When you talk to other Oilers, they’re just proud to be a part of a great place that has spirit, that has pride.”

He didn’t want to be there, but I wanted to support [the team], and also get him around sports. Jim Givens walked by to go to the concession stand and then came up to us. He knelt down and gave my son a pack of Skittles. Miles’ face just lit up – and then he wanted to be at the soccer game.”

His oldest child and his wife were ill, but he had to attend a meeting on campus. “I called the vice president, Dr. May, and simply said, ‘I’m not coming if you don’t allow me to bring my baby.’ He said, Sure, bring her in!’ That was a very warm statement for employees, in my mind. At that time, I was under a lot of stress, and that meant a lot to me.”

She enjoys sharing one of her favorite campus spots with students.“I love the Sensory Garden [behind the Davis Street building], and the area behind that they have let grow naturally rather than mowing. It is beautiful and relaxing to go out there. I take my students and have them pretend they are preschoolers doing a nature hike. In the fall and spring, we go out and collect seeds and look for birds and bugs. I’m glad it’s kind of a secret – it keeps it quiet.

Ben Sapp, ’93, ’95, director of the Mazza Museum, started in 1995. “This place is family. I love getting up every day and coming to work. There’s no two days that are alike. It’s just a special place that, if you’re here long enough, you get. It’s a place where students come and embrace what Findlay is and what Findlay has to offer. I think the faculty and staff and administration here really strive each day to make that come to life.”

What’s your favorite place on campus?

Meri Marsh ’03, ’16, instructor of teaching in riding and director of the equestrian studies and equine management program, started in 2007. “The outdoor riding track. How on a nice day, the ground has been drug, I’m on a good horse, and how good it feels to be out there.” Seth Ebersviller, Ph.D., assistant professor of environmental, safety and occupational health management, started in 2016. “The basketball arena in Croy. We came from North Carolina at UNC, so we’re basketball people. I was really happy UF is known for being a basketball school.”

Diana Montague, Ph.D., professor of communication, started in 1986. “Mazza – it’s just magical every time I’m in there. I bring all my classes there.”

Chris Moser, Ed.D., director, human resource development program, started in 1998. “I remember for the Day of Prayer, going to the flag in front of Old Main. And still, every time I walk by, I stop and look at the flag and the Arch – it’s a peaceful spot. The University has been a big part of my faith walk, my walk with the Lord.” Nicole Schneider, director of accommodation and academic support, started in 2020. “I love the Oiler Success Center, right out front where all those comfy chairs are. We get a lot of really good conversations off the books there.”

WLFC 88.3 FM

50 YEARS of Campus Radio By Bridget Muñóz

University of Findlay’s radio station, WLFC 88.3 FM, was once only available within a 10-mile radius of campus. Today, it can be broadcast globally to more Oilers than ever before as a result of music streaming and podcast popularity. Since its start in 1973, the radio station has prioritized students and opportunities to learn. Initially broadcast as an AM station, Findlay College was approved for an FM license for WLFC-FM 88.3 by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) in November 1973. The transition from AM to FM dials produced a stronger quality and added listenership numbers in the community. However, the allotted 10-watt reach was quite small relative to today's capabilities. Mike Yunis, ’80, former general manager of WLFC and now Communications Advisory Board member,

acknowledges the growth WLFC has achieved since its launch over 50 years ago.

“I remember when 10-watts allowed WLFC to be the voice to the city, and now it’s a voice to the world,” said Yunis. ​​ The call letters are commonly believed to stand for We Love Findlay College as the station quickly became an important part of the campus community. Aside from the station’s contemporary playlists, favorite shows included: the Helen Hall Show, Allison's Tea House, Findlay College Tonight, Bob Jones Sports Quiz, Ohio Education News Special, and the Findlay College Alumni Report.

Alexander Davis, communications instructor and faculty advisor for WLFC, believes it’s important to remember the “live and local” aspect of radio’s roots, while also remaining open to new trends in the communications industry. With a recent Instagram post from a UF student generating 2 million responses and another TikTok video that inspired 4.8 million views, Davis acknowledges, “Our reach is different.” WLFC has had many different homes on campus over the years but most recently moved to the heart of campus in the Alumni Memorial Union in November 2021. The creative workspace houses advanced equipment that is used by students of all majors for live shows, podcasting, interviews, and more. Ron Tulley, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, is excited by the amount of interest students have taken in the space.

“Podcasting has become incredibly popular, especially with student-athletes,” Tulley explains. “It generates a feeling around campus that ‘I don’t have to be a communications major to be part of the radio station.’ We want it to be a lab, a place of discovery for students.” Student-run podcasts bring the radio station to life, incorporating faculty, staff, and student perspectives on topics relating to UF. Some include Findlay Talks by Aurel Toska and Aiden Wright, The Spotlight by Jordan Grimes, and Late Nights with Lea by Malea Bess. Bill Rumbold ’74, a “founding father” of WLFC and current member of UF’s Communications Advisory Board, recognizes that the medium has changed drastically but believes there is “tremendous potential” to reach new listeners. “This is a worldwide medium, and it can be an emissary for the University,” he noted. “For example, I can be in Singapore and pull up 88.3 on my phone.” The potential for WLFC 88.3 is boundless as are the opportunities available for University of Findlay students to engage with a live radio station and pursue their interests. 50 years of campus radio is no small feat, and WLFC is poised to benefit current and future Oilers for years to come. Speed to Glory TIMOTHY STOLLINGS’ TRIUMPH IN THE POOL AND IN CLASS BY JOSH EILOLA

Timothy Stollings, a homeschooled swimmer, transformed his passion for the pool into a wave of triumphs on the Oiler swim team, culminating in a National Championship title and an ambitious pursuit of an MBA at the University of Findlay. During high school, Stollings continued his swimming skills by joining a club team at the YMCA. Despite not having the opportunity to compete in high school swimming, he dedicated himself to the sport, training rigorously alongside other club swimmers. His commitment and hard work in the pool allowed him to thrive and improve his performance. Stollings’ journey to UF’s swim team began with a simple inquiry. He expressed his interest and wasted no time in reaching out to the swim coach. Within a week, Stollings found himself on campus for a visit. Impressed by the supportive atmosphere, excellent facilities, and the camaraderie among team members, he was certain that he wanted to be a part of the Oiler family. He responded to the coach and conveyed his determination, saying, “How do we make this happen? I want to come to Findlay.” That eagerness and determination to be a part of the team showcased his dedication and passion for swimming. His transition from homeschooling to college life was smooth thanks to supportive teammates and coaches. At UF, Stollings found a welcoming community that valued his commitment and hard work, both in the pool and in his studies.

the National Championship in 2021 was a testament to his talent and commitment to the sport. He has also excelled academically, earning his undergraduate degree and now starting his MBA. As a studentathlete, Stollings has learned valuable life lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and time management. Balancing rigorous training sessions, academic responsibilities, and personal life can be challenging, but the senior swimmer has managed it with grace and determination. One of the most significant moments in a student’s life at the University is the Arch Ceremony. Reflecting on his experience, he fondly recalls, “I had goosebumps. Walking under the Arch and back out after four years is truly special. It’s one of the many things that makes Findlay special.” The ceremony symbolizes the transition from being an undergraduate student to taking the next step in one’s academic journey. It signifies a deep connection to the University and its community, and he cherishes this tradition as it marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Stollings is an inspiring individual who exemplifies the essence of a student-athlete. As he continues to pursue his passion for swimming and education at UF, his achievements will undoubtedly inspire and motivate others to reach for their goals and embrace the unique experiences that University life has to offer.

Equipping students for meaningful lives and productive careers has long been the focus of the University of Findlay community. Spanning our 141 years fulfilling this mission, our campus landscape and classrooms have seen profound changes. Beginning with iconic Old Main to the new Dick Strahm Champions Field, the physical expanse of campus has experienced noteworthy developments. These expansions have been accompanied by radical changes in classroom technology to prepare students for success in a global society.

“This institution has been through many challenges and has always managed to adjust as needed to continue its mission of serving students with a high-quality education. The fact that UF has not only survived a variety of changes but also thrived, says something about the character and nature of this institution and the people who have believed in it,” explains Christine Denecker, Ph.D. associate vice president for learning and innovation. Reflecting on the growth of the campus, Benjamin Sapp, director of the Mazza Museum adds, “I remember walking across streets to get to class and through parking lots that are no longer here… it’s exciting to see how the campus has changed and developed.” Expansion has included several facilities located a distance away from the main campus. More than 200 acres were added to campus with the addition of the Dr. C. Richard Beckett Animal Sciences Center at the Western Equestrian Farm and the James L Child Jr. English Equestrian Complex. Both farms feature working barns, indoor arenas, and academic spaces including capacity for over 450 horses. 18 | Fall 2023

As the campus landscape evolved, so did the classroom technology. Founded in 1882, chalkboards would not be introduced for another eight years. Focus on pencils and paper for testing and notetaking gave way to new audio, visual, and instructional technology for professors. In the 1930s, overhead projectors were introduced and by the 1970s radio, television, calculators and even photocopy machines were common across campus. Each major advancement in technology enhanced the quality and depth of instruction and support our students needed. As society moved into the digital age, institutions of higher education followed suit, the University of Findlay among them. Technology-enhanced education has become a given rather than a novelty. Most students today, compared with students in the past, cannot remember a time when there was no World Wide Web, and most carry with them cell phones that serve as computers, calculators, and search engines. “I can remember walking into Shafer Library and seeing the new Mac lab. We just thought it was the greatest thing to be able to sit behind a computer for

the first time,” says Sapp. The debate and usage surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to shape our community and innovate our society. As in the past, the University of Findlay welcomes progressive technology into our classrooms. Implementing hands-on learning in state-of-the-art facilities advanced by augmented reality prepares our students for the future. Follow us as we visit the unique academic spaces at UF. SONOGRAPHY PROGRAM Modeled after the University’s Nuclear Medicine Technology Program, UF’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is one of the most unique programs in the country. Students not only begin hands-on sonography experience within the first week of class, but the use of augmented reality is also made available to them. Last summer, a new, one-of-akind technology — augmented reality goggles — was added to the Sonography program. The goggles, developed by Cleveland-based MediView XR, Inc. specifically for UF, allows students to view the patient from

an angle not possible previously. Students don MediView XR, Inc. headsets, allowing them to put their screen anywhere they want. The headsets provide students with direct line-of-sight with their hands and the patient, providing a more intuitive experience. This also addresses workrelated skeletal issues suffered by sonographers. “The support from UF with providing industry-relevant equipment, scanning phantoms, and continually updated technologic classroom advancements has been exceptional,” says Susan Watters, chair of Diagnostic Services Program. “Through administrative support and the generosity of donors, our programs were the first in the nation to partner with Mediview to bring our students the opportunity to train on MediScout.”

vascular, gynecological, and obstetrical regions of the body,” says Watters. “Students use these machines to scan each other to build clinical skills and practice more sensitive exams before encountering a live patient.” COLLEGE OF SCIENCE PROGRAMS Technological advancements have enhanced learning in the Department of Physical Sciences, as the University has invested heavily in advanced instrumentation for teaching and research labs. Students have access to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) instruments, a new gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GCMS), and an upgraded X-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument.

CADAVER LAB For students focusing on medical school careers in the health sciences, UF offers a unique experience with an on-site cadaver lab. “To have access to a cadaver laboratory space like the one at UF is unusual for schools not affiliated with medical schools or teaching hospitals,” says Cara Davies, Ph.D. director of the Anatomy and Neuroscience Lab. For students, the opportunity comes with its fair share of anxiety and excitement. “When I heard that we would have the opportunity to work in the cadaver lab at UF, I was slightly nervous about the experience. After the first 15-20 minutes in the lab, all of the nerves subsided, and I was excited to learn about the human body in such a hands-on way,” says Ben Farrar, a thirdyear student in the Doctor of Physical FindlayMag | 19

Therapy (DPT) program. Once the students acclimate to the lab, they find that the donor bodies bring their textbooks to life. “Although many of the textbook pictures are drawn with great detail, the cadaver lab offers a hands-on learning experience,” says Kylie Ray, a first-year DPT student. “It is helpful to have a visual representation of the different body structures, and I believe this will be beneficial for patient care as we become physical therapists,” she added. ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, SAFETY, AND SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM Not only has University of Findlay updated its technology and facilities over time, it has also improved the way it prepares students for an everchanging world. For example, the Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) Program takes a hands-on approach to learning, resulting in 100% job placement after graduation. “Our program offers the next generation the opportunity to build a career that’s

stable, highly skilled, and financially rewarding,” says Kim Lichtveld, MSPH, Ph.D. chair of Environmental, Safety, and Occupational Health Management. “Through their classes, specialized training in realistic situations, and experiential learning, students gain a breadth of knowledge through environmental and occupational health, policy, and safety, using the same equipment they will encounter after they leave UF. Findlay is the only university in the U.S. that integrates an academic program with a nationally recognized emergency response training site - the All Hazards Training Center. EHSS students frequent the AllHazards Training Center, the nation’s leader in the development and delivery of customized environmental, health, and safety training programs. Established by the University of Findlay, the five-acre training facility utilizes a derailed train, an overturned tanker, buried drums, a ditch/stream spill, surface and groundwater sampling, and other training scenarios to prepare

students. Students learn first-hand about how to manage emergencies through defensive and offensive mitigation techniques, establishing control zones, and conducting sampling and damage assessments, all while wearing personal protective equipment. These experiences give the students a competitive advantage in the workplace. Our campus landscape and classroom technology will continue to reshape the future for UF students. While changes were exciting and sometimes debated, one thing remained consistent—the support and encouragement from faculty and staff. “The people are what make up a university—no matter what new technology promises to make education better or easier,” says Denecker. University of Findlay and its people are committed to equipping students for meaningful lives and productive careers.

Changing lives From its earliest days, the University of Findlay (then Findlay College) and the Churches of God recognized the need for a place where individuals could discover their calling in life through scholarship, faith, service, and sharing ideas. Exploring that “work-life balance” remains at the core of a UF education, according to Pastor Lance Finley, UF Board of Trustees member and executive director of the Churches of God General Conference. “God gave us the idea of work and productivity. The University of Findlay is right to prepare students for productive careers,” he said. “But there’s more to life than just work. What you do to earn a living is important, but your career is not, or should not be, the totality of who you are as a person. That’s why I love UF’s mission: we care about meaningful lives as well as productive careers.” Pastor Finley is proud of the “good and faithful work reaching around the globe” done by UF alumni for more than a century.

He shared these highlights: • In 1898, the Churches of God began their first mission work in India and later expanded into what is now Bangladesh. A large network of churches was established, as well as a medical hospital, eye clinic, and schools educating the poorest of the poor. This work was started by Iowa resident Clara Landes, who began her studies at Findlay College in 1889. • Viola Hershey Cover was another early missionary instrumental in Bangladesh. A student at Findlay College for two years, she received a letter from Landes requesting she come to India as a missionary. She served faithfully in India/Bangladesh for 45 years. • Betty Helwig Biswas, a 1951 graduate of Findlay College, served in India for 51 years and was vital to our educational work there. • The Churches of God have been involved in Haiti for 56 years with a medical clinic and hospital, more than 30 schools, 45 churches, and vocational training efforts, including a physical therapy school. This work began in 1967, thanks to the vision and faithful work of Pastor James Wallace, who attended Findlay College in the early 1950s. • In 1977, a medical clinic was established in Pierre Payen, Haiti, by Dr. Vic Binkley, a 1961 graduate of Findlay College. Today his medical clinic and hospital serve thousands of patients. Dr. Binkley gave more than 30 years of service in Haiti before his death in 2010. Pastor Finley believes the work of these missionaries indicates how “our histories are beautifully interwoven with one another.” “Countless lives have been impacted – the sick receiving vital medical care and compassion, the most vulnerable being equipped through life-changing education, and the hopeless finding a new identity and purpose in the reality of a God who loves them.”

DICK STRAHM CHAMPIONS FIELD Dick Strahm Champions Field provides 83,000 square feet of artificial turf for the football program and serves as auxiliary practice space for many of the 22 NCAA-sponsored Oiler sports teams. It additionally is utilized by UF’s intramural programs and community organizations including Upward Sports of Findlay. H O O P H O U S E FA C E L I F T Constructed in 2014, the Hoop House was designed to be a student-run entrepreneurial business. After going dormant, the Hoop House was renovated in Spring 2023. Students completed research on plants and soil before planting tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, zucchini, and more. All of the harvested crops have been donated to Christians Helping Other People in Need (CHOPIN Hall). Renovations were paid for by a generous gift from retired UF education professor, Elizabeth Raker, Ph.D.

U F R E C E I V E S E PA G R A N T The University was selected in 2022 as a recipient of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ohio Environmental Educational Fund (OEEF) Grant. UF was awarded $37,684 to inform and educate teachers about the benefits of agriculture, sustainability, renewable resources, and agricultural business. In the summer of 2023, teachers from area schools attended a no-cost workshop that included hands-on learning.

Lew Yan Voon was previously a professor of physics at the University of West Georgia, where he has also served as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics.

University of Findlay, in collaboration with Keypath Education, is embarking on an educational odyssey that promises to reshape the landscape of pharmacy education. With the launch of their innovative distance Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, UF is not only making history in Ohio with its distance-learning pharmacy program, but also addressing the growing need for licensed pharmacists nationwide. Leading the charge in this endeavor is Dean Debra Parker, Pharm.D., who enthusiastically supports the program, emphasizing its alignment with the evolving needs of today's students. "We are delighted to offer a pathway to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree that aligns

with the expectations and requirements of today’s learners,” she explains. “Our program provides a flexible learning experience that incorporates distance education when suitable, hands-on learning during consolidated on-campus sessions, and invaluable experiential learning opportunities in real-world settings. We have crafted the perfect blend to prepare the pharmacists of tomorrow to serve communities nationwide without requiring them to relocate." Dean Parker's visionary approach

By combining distance learning with immersive, on-campus experiences, the program caters to a diverse array of students, offering an optimal balance of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Ryan Schneider, Pharm.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences and associate dean for operations and effectiveness, is at the forefront of this transformative endeavor. In his role as chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Schneider brings a wealth of experience to the development of the program. He is excited about the opportunities for students, noting, "University of Findlay has a long-standing tradition of offering online degree programs. We are

excited to build on this foundation as we introduce a distance education route to a Pharm.D. Being the first online Pharm.D. program in Ohio and one of fewer than 10 nationwide, we believe this innovative pathway will uniquely position our program to educate the next generation of pharmacists who seek a more flexible learning environment." The heart of the program lies in its curriculum, primarily delivered online. Students can access their coursework from the comfort of their homes, offering the flexibility they need to manage their studies alongside other commitments. Newly Endowed Funds 2022-23 The following funds became fully endowed during the 2022-23 fiscal year. Joe and Betty Brodie Scholarship Endowment Fund Joe and Betty Brodie hereby establish the Joe and Betty Brodie Scholarship Endowment at the University of Findlay to give back to help students in need. During my time as a student at UF, I saw the impact that alumni had on campus and how devoted they were to serving their University. Whether it was committing time, donating money, creating a class gift, supporting a new facility, or simply speaking positively about the University, all of these things benefitted me as a student. I have also been blessed to see many fellow alumni truly live out the UF mission of meaningful lives and productive careers. They are Oilers for life and never forget their experiences here at UF. Dr. C. Richard "Dick" Beckett, 88, a great friend and leader to the University of Findlay, passed away Oct. 20, 2023.

to a lasting partnership expanding global experiences to both UF and Japan.

The highly successful, well-respected veterinarian served and led the University as a visionary in launching the equine and pre-vet programs. He spent more than 40 years helping the University educate students from around the world. In 2009, the Dr. C. Richard Beckett Animal Science Building at the Western farm was named in his honor.

Dr. Beckett and his wife Linda have been long-time President’s Leadership Society donors and CT Fox Legacy Society members. He was honored with the Arch Award and a UF Lifetime Achievement Award, and he holds an honorary doctorate in entrepreneurial business development.

He joined the Board of Trustees in 1985 and was elected chair in 2002. Beginning in 2019, he served as Trustee Emeritus. Under his leadership, the campus improved with acquisitions of Winebrenner Village Retirement community (now the Village Residence Hall), the former Owens Community College (now the Davis Street Building), and expansions to Henderson and the Mazza Museum.

“Dr. Beckett’s wisdom, vision, and compassion benefited the University of Findlay for decades,” UF President Katherine Fell, Ph.D., said. “He loved spending time with students, faculty and staff, and his eyes would light up whenever he talked about the University. We are all deeply blessed to have had him at the UF helm to guide and encourage us.” Beckett is survived by his wife Linda (Derr) Beckett of 62 years, four children, 8 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. They include son Tod Beckett, DVM (Mary Beckett), grandson Travis Beckett (Daniela Beckett), great-grandson Preston and great-granddaughter Sofia; grandson Ben Beckett; granddaughter Maxine; daughter Kelli Hatfield (Bud Hatfield); daughter Jill Beckett-Hill (Adam Hill), grandson Samuel and granddaughter Sydney; son Matt Beckett (Jamie Beckett), granddaughters Gray and Ryan, grandson Cole.

In 2007, Dr. Beckett helped to create the annual Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity to showcase undergraduate and graduate research. Also, his work with the Kake Educational Institution, of which he was named an honorary director, led FindlayMag | 47
