This edition of the FindlayMag inspires me. I believe it will inspire you, too. It is filled with stories of UF people finding meaning in their lives by serving others—the most important test of a real education and of real educators.

Close to home and far away, Oilers are making their mark. As you read the following pages, you will learn of the vision and reach of alumni and community leaders Charlie and Belinda Ernst, of current student Joshua Verhoff, and of Dallas Smith, Pharm.D. ‘17. You will see a brighter future for patients and emerging healthcare professionals made possible by the strong partnership between UF and Blanchard Valley Health System.

Finally, you will see the names of our friends who donate to University of Findlay—generous, selfless philanthropists supporting the noble cause of UF’s mission: to equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers.

Onward, Oilers!

YEARS AND COUNTING TRADITION EXCELLENCE

OF EXCELLENCE

1882

Tradition

is one of the few things that can withstand the test of time. This may be why the University of Findlay is now celebrating its 140th year as an academic institution working to cultivate the potential within each student. Through academic excellence, transformative experiences, and a supportive community that is grounded in Christian faith, Findlay has continued to provide students with opportunities to continue their education…

Established in 1882 through a joint partnership between the Churches of God, General Conference and the city of Findlay, Findlay College was developed with the goal of providing faithcentered, high quality academics to the community. With a total of 70 students, classes first began in 1886, during the height of a natural gas and oil boom which made Findlay one of the most prosperous and exciting communities in the country at that time. This heritage was ingrained in, then, Findlay College and can be seen across campus still today. In 1892, Findlay adopted orange and black as the school colors, representing the flame atop the natural gas derricks. Later, Derrick the Oiler became the school’s official mascot and the “Oilers” were born.

In the last 140 years, many things have changed - from the technology we now use daily, to the roads and buildings that seemingly spring up from the ground around us. One thing that has not waivered, is Findlay’s commitment to equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers. “This may not have been our stated mission in 1980, but we were living it back then in the same way we are now!” said Raymond McCandless, vice president of information technology services. “It was part of our culture and as a young faculty member I knew it and felt it.”

Having been a part of campus since the fall of 1980, McCandless has served in many roles outside of his current position including as instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of political science and public administration; chair of the social science division; chair of the criminal justice department; academic technology services director; and Center for Teaching Excellence director. Throughout his time of more than 40 years at Findlay, McCandless noted a number of prominent changes. “What

1989

Findlay College becomes University of Findlay

first comes to mind is academic program growth. What became obvious to me very quickly as I began my time at Findlay was the emphasis on careers and profession,” McCandless said. “The programs/majors that have been added, such as in the health professions areas, continues this tradition.” He added if anyone would be transported directly from Findlay College campus of 1980 to now, “they would be struck immediately by the growth in the number of buildings, the expansiveness of campus.”

For Findlay, growth means more than expanding to the next block or packing classrooms. “Every university campus can point to the growth in technology, bricks and mortar, and program development as a way that they are better serving students today. However, none of that really matters unless the servant-leader philosophy becomes embedded within the institution’s DNA,” McCandless explained. Findlay has grown with the unique objective of making connections between academic studies and future careers for students.

Even with all the changes, some traditions will never fade. The Griffith Memorial Arch, constructed in memory of Caddie Griffith ’09, a former student and faculty member, stands tall in front of Old Main and marks entry to campus in a number of ways. Now a longstanding tradition, incoming students walk through the Arch toward Old Main during orientation as an official welcome to campus. When students graduate, they pass through the Arch again in the opposite direction and go back out into the world to begin their careers. Reflecting on traditions, McCandless added, “there is something else happening during that opening time that is even more important to me. All of the one-on-one help provided to students as they attempt to negotiate academic schedules, technology use, athletic practice, student housing and many other challenges. This is the true gateway to UF. This is what gives real meaning to entering through the Griffith Memorial Arch - a campus community that supports and cares during college and well after.”

A CAMPAIGN TO PAVE THE WAY FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

"One person won't change the world, but together, we can, and we will, " Billy Watterson '96, CEO of Watterson Brands and co-chair of the University of Findlay's comprehensive campaign, "Together We Will."

The goal of the University’s campaign is for people to, “come together and share resources to ensure that future generations of students have the best technology, and great experiences,” allow the University to grow and continue to be a leader in private higher education. Watterson explained the "Together We Will" campaign will help to “provide the resources necessary for those students to get out into the world and be productive - to do great things - and also doing it through a lens of caring for people.”

Marcia Sloan Latta, Ed.D., vice president for University Advancement, noted that gifts of any size to any designation to the University’s campaign is not too small. From supporting specific areas of academics and infrastructure updates, to providing students opportunities to have handson learning experiences within their fields, Watterson noted there is an area of impact that will provide donors the opportunity to get “front and center with your heart and your values and put them to work.”

Annual Scholarships and Financial Aid

Annual scholarships and financial aid; experiential, service, and research opportunities; program growth and new course offerings; new buildings and updates to technology: donor funds affect students, and University of Findlay’s campus as a whole, in a countless number of ways. Through the “Together We Will” campaign, the University hopes to raise funds which will help to develop graduates that serve and lead with purpose, passion, and skill.

"By giving back, it makes your own degree more valuable as it helps create opportunities for future generations of Oilers.”
- Diana Montague, Ph.D.

Diana Montague, Ph.D., professor of communication, explained gifts to the University provide opportunities that create a sense of community and place by helping students focus on their purpose and passions. “We live in a world so full of distractions and can become overwhelmed with information. This campaign can really help give our students the chance to step back, look around them, and evaluate what’s of value and what’s really important to them,” she said, noting that students who receive scholarships have more opportunity to focus on their studies and campus life with less financial responsibility to worry about.

The abundance of hands-on learning options available to students, thanks to generous donors and dedicated faculty and staff such as Montague, create a lasting impact by giving them real-world experience that gives them a head-start on their future career as well as offering the perfect opportunity to network with industry professionals and philanthropists.

“The more experiential learning we can give our students, beyond classroom learning, those are often the most impactful and the most memorable,” Montague said.

Building the campus experience, as she says, makes a degree from UF even more valuable. “By giving back, it makes your own degree more valuable as it helps create opportunities for future generations of Oilers.”

College Education

University of Findlay senior, De’Angelo Garner, has felt first-hand the impact of donor and community support throughout his academic career. With his much anticipated graduation quickly approaching in May 2023, Garner first became interested in UF because of the variety of unique degree offerings in the College of Health Professions, including his selected major of Echocardiography.

A college education isn’t something that everyone gets to experience. “I really think scholarships play a big role in helping students go to college,” Garner said. These extra funds can have a huge impact as “most students have a hard time paying for college” between the costs of tuition,

materials, and basic living expenses. Receiving scholarships - academic, athletic, endowed, or other - helps reduce costs, and stress, for students and parents alike. Having received scholarships himself, Garner noted that in his case, they helped him work toward his goal of becoming a sonographer by allowing him to continue his education.

Scholarships are just one of the many ways that donor gifts affect students at UF. Across campus, building renovations, technological upgrades, and new offerings have made OilerNation all the better for students. “A really big change that I’ve seen has been in the cadaver lab,” he said, which has been expanded and renovated to include state-of-theart equipment. New cutting-edge technology, such as the MediView augmented reality system currently being used in the Sonography Program, are crucial to student learning and program growth. Garner explained having new technologies, equipment, and updated spaces available to students heightens their learning experience and provides a glimpse of what their future professions will look like.

"I would like to express my gratitude and thanks for those who give back to UF so students like me can continue their education and to pursue their dreams and careers; and for making things possible that wouldn't have been without their support," said De'Angelo.

CAMPAIGN MISSION

To develop graduates that serve and lead with purpose, passion, and skill.

CAMPAIGN GOAL

Raise $75 million over the next seven years.

LEARNING BY DOING

Experiential learning is far from being an after-thought or an add-on to certain courses. The University of Findlay prides itself on providing students opportunities for transformative experiences at every turn by building hands-on learning into academic programs, creating student organizations, arranging internships, study and service abroad trips, and more.

At Findlay, learning by doing and gaining experiences are just as important as what students learn inside the classroom because it helps bridge concepts with real-world application. When students participate in experiential education opportunities, they gain:

• A better understanding of course material

• Insight into their own skills, interests, and values

• Opportunities to collaborate and network with other students and professionals

• Positive professional practices and skill sets

• Self-confidence and leadership skills

Depending on their academic career path and interests, students could gain experiences such as assisting vital healthcare professionals working on the front lines, practicing veterinary medicine, engaging with small businesses and entrepreneurs, or teaching a class at a local elementary school.

Students are able to rely on faculty and professional offices, like the Center for Career and Professional Development to help them find additional avenues for experiential learning including external internships and community service. Through impressive internships including Marathon Petroleum Corporation, the Ohio House of Representatives, and even NASA, Oiler students are getting jump-starts on productive careers by building valuable knowledge and skills unique to their major.

SERVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER

Service has been an integral part of the University and is built into the very fabric of campus. Throughout their time at Findlay, each and every student is provided the opportunity to impact their local community through service projects and multiple service-oriented student groups including Colleges Against Cancer, UF Habitat for Humanity, and 4 Paws for Ability.

As a member of the Ohio Campus Compact and the National Campus Compact, an organization of nearly 1,200 colleges and universities which promotes volunteer service and helps faculty integrate public and community engagement into their teaching and research, the University of Findlay has made incredible connections with local organizations and encourages students to do the same. Participating in service learning projects in the local community and beyond further develop students’ citizenship skills and values and ultimately help to create well-rounded and attentive students, and graduates of Findlay.

EXPERIENCING A WORLDLY EDUCATION

The University is proud to offer students a variety of international study and service abroad options again after being put on hold the last few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these programs are major-specific while others provide valuable cross-disciplinary cultural exploration. Students are able to take their interests and goals into consideration when selecting which area of the world they would most like to explore and learn from.

With students, alumni, and faculty traveling to places including Ireland, Sweden, Japan, and England, sharing their education and values all while learning about entirely different cultures, Findlay has created internationally knowledgeable students who positively affect the world’s economy and recognize global commonalities.

Supporting study and service abroad programs helps both students and faculty make the most of wider experiential learning, one that leads to a better understanding of diversity and service together as a whole.

CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES

GROUNDED IN FAITH, WELCOMING ALL

At the University of Findlay, students can expect to find a wide array of fellowship and discipleship opportunities. Founded by the Churches of God, General Conference and the City of Findlay as a Christ-centered college, the University celebrates Christian principles alongside academia but welcomes all; providing a safe and open environment for those of any faith.

Campus Ministries provides students of all denominations guidance that will leave a lasting impact on their lives, and encourage them to support their communities and form powerful bonds. Every Thursday night, hundreds of students gather together in song and prayer at Revive, the student-led campus worship service, and throughout the week smaller groups gather to spend time in prayer and reflection.

No matter their area of study or religious beliefs, the University is always ready to assist students with a life of faith. Endowments for the leadership within Campus Ministry ensure long-term support for this important work and assure that students have guidance and resources readily available to them.

MAKING AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT

Having the greatest impact at the University, the Findlay Fund is a crucial, unrestricted emergency fund that makes a direct and immediate impact on the lives of students and faculty. This flexible fund enables the University to make timely investments and provides much needed assistance to students, campus, and more in the face of both opportunities and challenges.

The Findlay Fund has supported many students with both scholarship and emergency funds in times of need. Since its inception, the fund has also provided for improvements and necessary renovations to campus buildings, innovation within classrooms and labs, maintenance of athletic fields and courts, expansion of campus housing, and provides support for vital student services such as counseling, health care, academic guidance, and internship or career placement.

The use of the Findlay Fund is driven by the needs of students and campus, making it one of the most directly impactful areas to support.

BUILDING FOR FUTURE OILERS

To ensure students are prepared for meaningful lives and productive careers, the University requires all students to take a variety of core courses, including those from within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS). Courses such as English, history, communication, language, religion, sociology, psychology, and a slew of others gives students the opportunity to explore academically, as well as within themselves, which leads to well-rounded and knowledgeable alumni who take their education and share it with communities around the world.

Faculty offices are currently located in former residential houses on campus that are not only costly and inefficient to maintain, but also don’t provide room for program growth or a way to assist in fostering the creativity and thoughtprovoking discussions between students and faculty in CAHSS. After hearing of this tremendous need and being presented with the opportunity to make a difference on campus, Billy Watterson ‘96, CEO of Watterson Brands, University of Findlay Board of Trustee member, and co-chair of the Together We Will Campaign, generously stepped up to provide the lead gift for a building which will serve as a focal

Aptly named, the Watterson Center for Ethical Leadership will help strengthen the collaboration between students and faculty by providing a shared, safe space to have difficult conversations about the challenges we face in the world, and articulate their own views while hearing and learning about the views of others. The Center will include offices, classrooms, and a presentation area.

Many future students of the University will go to the Watterson Center for Ethical Leadership for one reason or another; attend a class, meet with fellow students, or to speak to a faculty member or mentor. Along with teaching them the values that come from the programs within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the building will encourage a commitment to sustainability and enable the University to continue to grow and evolve with technology.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE THEN AND NOW

Findlay Football is a “well-oiled machine” according to Pat Gibson ’82, part of the 1979 then Findlay College football team that brought home the National Championship that year.

Gibson grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and started playing football when he was in the ninth grade. Gibson was recruited by head coach, Dick Strahm, to play for Findlay in the mid 70s. He was drawn to Findlay not only for the football, but also for the Mathematics Program and the family-like atmosphere. During his first year on the team, a fellow player was hurt which lead to Gibson being chosen as a starter for the team and he never looked back. Throughout his years playing Findlay football, Gibson stated, “The team just had such great camaraderie; we just fought through many things together to form a tight bond.”

According to Gibson, “Something that we’ve always had on our football team was a great defense and an offense that was dominating and just stayed out on the field for a long time, just wearing down our opponents.” In fact, Findlay’s offensive line was once referred to as “the wrecking crew.” During his junior year in 1978, with the guidance of six leading seniors, the team made it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship but ended up losing 7 to 0. The following year, the team made it to the NAIA National Championship again and “we weren’t going to lose it this time,” said Gibson.

This ended up being the case, as the team won. Many players went on to coach and referee, and, as a team, Gibson said they have done some really great things. In addition, the 1979 Findlay football team was enshrined into the University’s Athletic Department Football Hall of Fame in 2018. “We wouldn’t have been able to get to this point without the seniors from the 1978 team; their leadership was such a large contribution to where we ended up as National Champions,” Gibson stated. “Our team did have some traditions, but those aren’t the type of things that stuck with me. Really what stuck is the family we created with the other players on the team. We just had so many great players and now are good friends for life.”

Gibson graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in both mathematics and computer science and has remained in the Findlay area ever since. Professionally, Gibson spent many years working at Solomon Cloud Solutions and now works at Marathon Petroleum Corporation. “The small-town environment is such a great place compared to a big city. This is an unbelievable place to raise a family - I just enjoy being here.”

Findlay Football continues to be a “well-oiled machine” even today. Michael Jerrell ‘22 and the 2021 University of Findlay football team won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) title last fall and has hopes of continued success this season.

Jerrell graduated in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Business Administration - Management Emphasis,

and a marketing minor. He is currently continuing his education with University of Findlay to earn his MBA and hopes to pursue a career in professional football. Originally from Indianapolis, IN, Jerrell was drawn to UF because “the football coaches gave me a family vibe, and made me feel comfortable. They believed in me and had a vision for me,” he said. “Being from a big city, I wanted to get away from that and I liked the idea of coming to a place where I could focus.”

“It’s been a journey - it’s been a good journey,” said Jerrell as he described his time at Findlay. He noticed that all his professors and coaches seem to love their jobs and love helping students. “They have all really

shaped me into the person I am today and have pointed me in a good direction.”

At the University, many traditions have become so well established that they shape the very culture of campus. “When I committed to play football at UF, I noticed the culture of we’re going to work hard, we’re going to be gritty, and we’re going to get after it,” he said. This cultural frame-of-mind has carried on from class to class, leading to many successes along the way. “I think the culture Findlay has created is so important. First, you have to have great leaders to establish tradition and then you have to have a great group to continue on that tradition year after year, and UF has that,” said Jerrell.

Moving Forward

Since the beginning, Findlay’s academics and athletics programs have paved the way for Oilers across the country, and continues to do so. Whether it’s getting students and players out of their comfort zone and helping them become leaders, or just creating a positive environment for them to grow, the University of Findlay has, and will continue to, equip students for meaningful lives and productive careers.

Since its founding in 1882, Findlay College, now University of Findlay, has grown tremendously in physical space, academic course offerings, student activities, experiential learning opportunities, and scholarship opportunities, to name a few. While enhancements have been made, many long-standing traditions remain; reminding us the purpose of the Oiler experience will always be to build up our students and their communities.

As we celebrate the 140th anniversary of the University, this issue of the FindlayMag both highlights the changes the institution has faced over the years and shares our excitement in introducing the new campaign, “Together We Will,” to further our mission of equipping students for meaningful lives and productive careers. Through this comprehensive campaign, we hope to illustrate the vast number of ways donor support impacts current and future Oilers, and encourage others to assist in creating new opportunities for our students.

The success of our alumni speaks volumes to UF’s programs and impressive faculty; having internships and careers with some of the most cutting-edge organizations in the world including NASA, Marathon Petroleum, Pepsi Co., and the FBI. From around the block to across the globe, Oilers are making an impact in every industry imaginable.

The full Annual Report, which includes the audited financial statements and recognizes lists of those who have generously contributed to the University of Findlay, will be available online beginning January 17 at mag.findlay.edu. It is with the utmost gratitude that I offer my thanks to those who have supported, and continue to support, Oiler Nation.
