SCHOOL
Lieutenant Colonel Kathleen Cannon ‘87

From the President

The University of Findlay salutes our country’s military veterans who have unselfishly provided us the freedom to pursue productive lives of meaning and joy. We acknowledge that all of us who work, teach, and learn on our campus owe a debt of gratitude to veterans for the independence that allows us to follow our calling. Our university has been repeatedly recognized for its outstanding service to U.S. veterans and active military members and their families. Along with providing additional educational support to ensure academic success, the University also honored veterans who are alumni and friends of the institution with an expanded Veterans Day celebration this November. Our service to and acknowledgement of them are tokens of our appreciation for the brave call to duty they have fulfilled.
This FindlayMag issue is continuing this tradition of recognition by including three veteran-focused features that highlight the sacrifices these individuals made and the lessons they learned along the way. Our cover story spotlights retired Lt. Col. Kathleen Cannon '87, whose U.S. Army service has taken her from the cockpit of Black Hawks to diplomatic discussions in China. Chaplain (Brigadier General) Kenneth “Ed” Brandt ’81, while adhering to his Christian faith, tells of how he has counseled thousands of soldiers through loss and other traumas while guiding others along their military chaplaincy careers. Lt. Col. Harold Brown, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, and a recent recipient of an honorary doctoral degree from UF, relays his experience as a German POW during World War II.
Also, please make sure you do not miss a few other stories covered in this edition: one about a different type of veteran, a student-athlete who successfully battled cancer; the Service Spotlight featuring our busy and innovative Center for Career and Professional Development; and narratives about some of our generous donors who also play an integral role in making students’ higher education dreams come true.
Sincerely,
Katherine Fell, Ph.D. President

Center for Career and Professional Development
Gone are the days of buying fancy resumé paper! University of Findlay students and alumni might not often realize that, upon graduation, they need to be prepared not just for landing a job, but also to be armed with the skills to navigate the entire employment experience. This is where UF’s Center for Career and Professional Development comes in.
The center (CCPD) provides students and alumni with valuable knowledge, services, and resources to instill confidence when networking with professionals, interviewing, and landing an internship or employment. “We do a lot of the connecting,” said Brad Hammer '03, M'13, Director of Career and Professional Development. “We put events together, we post jobs, we create networking opportunities where students can connect with employers, and then the students usually take it from there.”
Among the more unique and interesting perks that the center offers to students and alumni are the Career Closet and professional head shots. The former, which rents suits for up to a week for $5, has proven to be invaluable for those who don’t want to spend a lot for an outfit they might use sparingly. “A lot of times students only need them for interviews or presentations,” explained Susan Eiserle, CCPD’s administrative assistant and Career Closet manager.
Eiserle is also in charge of taking photos for professional social media profiles and other career needs. She said the CCPD has photo booths at career fairs and other events. “I had a pharmacy student tell me at one time that she had a professional photo taken for $40! We take them free of charge for students and alumni,” said Eiserle.
Alexis Binder, CCPD assistant director, said that, while all universities certainly want their graduates to find employment, UF reaches beyond that goal. “We’ve shifted to the idea of trying to empower our students with skills and knowledge to be able to navigate the whole employment experience, because people change jobs all the time now,” she said. “You might not like your first job. Then what? We want you to be able to see all of the possible scenarios on your own.”
The CCPD, which also includes client services specialist Katrina Shull, and professional development counselor Cindy Strathman, collectively want students and alumni to know that the sooner they start considering a life after graduation, the better, and even encourages students to begin as soon as their freshman year. “Actively engaging in career development earlier prevents that ‘I’m about to graduate’ or ‘I’ve graduated and don’t know what to do’ moment of panic,” Hammer said. “We’re here for you early and for the duration of your career. We can definitely help make it easier.”

Lieutenant Colonel Kathleen Cannon ‘87

SCHOOL
Alumna and U.S. Army Servicewoman Shares Advice on How to Soar After Stumbling
By Joy Brown M’19

Photography by Amy DePuy

By definition, the word “failure” does not apply to retired Lieutenant Colonel Kathleen Cannon ‘87. Her career has been distinguished by groundbreaking and gutsy military service marked by Black Hawk missions, her status as one of the few female U.S. Army aviation commanders, and intricate foreign diplomacy work in and outside of combat zones. And yet, at a pivotal career point that should’ve been cause for celebration, Cannon said she didn’t feel like she’d succeeded.
“As I stood at this crossroad, it was so dark,” Cannon admitted during her graduate commencement speech at the University of Findlay in May 2019. “I felt alone and defeated.”
While embarking on a different professional mission for the Army that would take her to the other side of the world, where nearly everything seemed otherworldly, Cannon would initially carry those feelings of inadequacy with her. It would take more time and introspection for her to recognize the common thread of connection that she said is essential for us all to embrace if we wish to live lives that are of value to ourselves and to others.
“This is what I learned: Know yourself and bring others with you,” Cannon, a Legion of Merit award recipient and a 2019 UF Distinguished Alumna, told UF graduates. She emphasized that each challenge-induced reinvention requires self-awareness and outside help. “What is important to you? What do you admire about yourself? What needs work? Then lift your sights outward. What help do you need? Is it encouragement, a shove in the right direction, a shoulder to cry on, or maybe a glimpse of a new possibility? What are your strengths? What can you offer? Then, overcome your inertia or doubt and take action. These relationships you foster will help carry the burden, sometimes your load, sometimes another’s,” she said.
Of course, such wisdom didn’t come easy. Cannon’s life, much of it lived from a standpoint of stubborn independence cultivated within challenging settings at home and abroad, illustrates how she reached this conclusion, and why she hopes others benefit from it.

The Upstate New York native’s love of horses brought her to then Findlay College. She was impressed by the fact that “every student rode at least one horse every day,” and by the large farm that houses hundreds of horses. She decided to double major in equestrian studies and business. But the road to commencement wasn’t smooth. Her strong work ethic, others’ generosity, and academic offerings that stoked curiosity were key factors that guided her to graduation.
With her two brothers also starting college, Cannon’s family finances were limited, so, it was up to her to find additional ways to help pay for tuition, room, and board. “I had worked and
but ROTC turned out to be my only real option,” she said.
In addition, “the kindness and caring of everyone at Findlay who were at first strangers” helped her immensely, Cannon said. Those interactions provided a firm social foundation that has since influenced her personal and professional endeavors at home and throughout the world. She hasn’t forgotten how so many people at UF helped her financially-strapped, farfrom-home self in so many ways.

saved in high school, had generous scholarships and aid, and worked several jobs at a time in my first two years at Findlay,” she explained. “But I realized if I didn’t get one more scholarship, I just couldn’t afford to return for my junior year.” Her solution: enrolling in the Army’s Reserve Officer Training Corps, which covered her tuition and enabled her to become commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. “I literally knew nothing about the Army,
During the 1980s, phone calls were expensive, and travelling was too, Cannon pointed out; keeping in touch with family therefore meant monthly calls, if that, and a single trip home during Christmas break. Others took note. “One classmate invited me home for Thanksgiving freshman year,” she said. “Another gave me one of her old down jackets when she saw me wearing so many layers at the barn. The nurse always had a caring ear. A professor helped me earn some extra money babysitting and the campus maintenance supervisor let me ticket cars in 15-minute blocks for some of my work study,” she recalled. “As I later traveled the world, I believe this helped me not to fear strangers and the unknown, but to expect the best from people.”
Also unexpected at the time was the love of learning Cannon developed while at Findlay. She admitted that, although she did well
with her high school studies, she found them “tedious.” “Studying new areas and subjects at Findlay was engaging,” she said, and would give her enough confidence to eventually master Chinese, get a master’s degree from Harvard University, and return to graduate school to pursue a second career in finance.
Cannon had intended to land a job in the equine industry. Instead, military flight school beckoned. From there, she served in a battalion in the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, led a Black Hawk assault helicopter platoon there, and served in an air traffic control battalion in South Korea. During Desert Shield, she deployed a Black Hawk platoon to Cyprus. Once Desert Storm commenced, “we had to evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Beirut,” she said. At Fort Carson, Colorado, she commanded a Black Hawk assault helicopter company in the 4th Infantry Division. Subsequent jobs entailed helicopter maintenance company work at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and flying VIP’s on the east coast.
Cannon loved the variety, challenges, and different environments involved with flying. She flew over the Alps, Rockies, California desert, and the Mediterranean Ocean. She described her experiences in poetic terms. “I’ve flown in snow and clouds of dust, and blacked out on moonless nights skimming through the trees with night vision goggles. We inserted troops by parachute, ropes, and even jumping into water. We’d sling load HUMMVs, cannons, and fuel bladders, you name it. There was always something new. That responsibility, knowing my soldiers’ lives were literally my responsibility, was terrifying, but it was also incredibly meaningful and rewarding,” she said.

Flying is inherently risky, even outside of combat, and particularly during training flights. To that end, Cannon faced her fair share of difficult moments. She had an engine catch fire. Once, she came just inches away of striking a wire and crashing into a river. “That potential wire strike was the most scared I have ever been,” she acknowledged.
In combat, she said she was mostly “too busy” to be afraid. “To a certain extent, the Army trains you through repetition how to respond and and work together when everything goes wrong." So, you intuitively fall back on that and get to work,” she explained. “However, rocket and mortar fire did make me angry,” she said. In Iraq, a rocket landed about 25 meters away from the portable toilet she was using. She’d be damned, she thought, if she was going to die covered in blue toilet water and raw sewage. “It turns out this is a common fear among soldiers; no one wants to go out that way,” she quipped.
The work was challenging in other ways, particularly in ways that specifically targeted her gender.
“It wasn’t just that I didn’t have any role models. I was clearly serving in ‘this man’s Army.’ When it was time for me to get a promised Black Hawk helicopter platoon at my first duty station, I heard through the grapevine that it was going to another lieutenant,” Cannon said in her commencement speech. She was told the brigade commander “didn’t want a female in that job. I left his office infuriated. In the end I did get that platoon, but I knew every day that my boss had fought to keep me out,” she said. Her female contemporaries also experienced discrimination.
Other problems complicated matters. Cannon said that while she loved flying and leading troops for the Army, her marriage was falling apart and would soon end, and her company would deactivate due to a planned troop drawdown. The era that involved flying Black Hawks and being a platoon leader and commander was ending. What’s more, she despised her boss.
Flight School, 1988
Flying in Hong Kong, 2008
Hong Kong Flight Crew, 2008
“One dark night in the desert we stood chest-to-chest, him towering over me, ordering me to change my tactics because that wasn’t the way he had done it. I felt the overpowering urge to haul off and hit him. I literally made a fist. Instead I growled, ‘yes, sir’ and stomped off,” she admitted.
Therefore, Cannon’s decisions to go to the Defense League Institute to learn Mandarin Chinese, earn a master’s degree in East Asian studies at Harvard, and then live and work in Asia, were bittersweet. The new possibilities excited her, but “it also felt like quitting. Like I failed. Like I was slinking away from my responsibility to lead and serve soldiers,” she maintained. She considered leaving the military altogether. Instead, she served in a different way, as an Army Foreign Area Officer (FAO), again pursuing fascinating work that appealed to her intellect and curiosity. Her work in China involved advising on strategic issues for the Department of Defense, serving as a Chinese military analyst, and as an Army attaché in Hong Kong. While an FAO, she also served two combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan at Task Force and NATO headquarters
Prior to this she hadn’t even known anything about China, other than what she saw during a trip from Germany via the Trans-Siberian Railway. The country seemed “so strange, part time capsule, part alien planet,” she said. “Living and working there seemed like it would be the ultimate adventure.”
Cannon credits her grit and perseverance to her upbringing. The brutal New York cold, “doing hard labor on a dairy farm as a teenager,” and her family’s expectations of her were transformative. “I think the (family’s) expectation was always that I would succeed, despite obstacles and difficulties that came up. Failure didn’t
seem to be an option,” she said.
Although she wonders what might’ve happened, Cannon doesn’t regret not staying the aviation course. What she does regret: isolating herself, including from other women. “We were living and working in a man’s world and I internalized the ideal soldier as a brave, strong, square-jawed man,” she said. “...I struggled alone to prove I was just as good, or better than, the men. I was afraid that identifying too much with female soldiers would project weakness. And I missed out on opportunities to draw from their strength and see us all succeed. “I wish I hadn’t tried to go it alone so often...,” she concluded “When I felt inadequate I didn’t see that I had anything to offer someone else. I didn’t see myself as a mentor, or as a champion of someone else. I wish I had put myself out there more and encouraged others to learn from me, including my mistakes.”
Professionally, Cannon is also facing the unknown yet again. She is back in school studying finance to become a Certified Financial Planner and launch her own business. “Though I often chaffed working under someone
That responsibility, knowing my soldiers’ lives were literally my responsibility, was terrifying, but it was also incredibly meaningful and rewarding.”
else, I never viewed myself as a solo entrepreneur, so this is both exciting and a bit terrifying,” she said.
What she fears the most, however, is failure, which she acknowledged “is strange. I have failed, stumbled and fallen so many times and come back for the better, you’d think I’d be over it by now. I guess the fear of failure motivates me to do better, be better,” she said.
These days, Cannon finds herself coming full circle, pursuing goals that she set while at UF. “I’m really enjoying being (literally) back in the saddle again,” she said. “I have three horses at home right now and have been competing in three-day eventing. I qualified for the national championships this year, which was a blast, and placed both individually and in team competition. And, I have just moved to training level, so everything is bigger, faster, more complex, and even more fun,” she said.
To that end, Cannon is now fully embracing the philosophy of connection that she spent so many years struggling to recognize. “I value honesty, kindness, persistence, service and sacrifice,” she concluded. Those who impress her are individuals who are willing to share their mistakes, struggles, and successes while mentoring others. “That inspires me to do the same and be a better person,” she concluded. “It’s important to me to be the kind of person I can be proud of and help improve the lives of those around me.”

Alumnus Travels The World As U.S. Army Chaplain
By Krystan Krucki | Photography by Anne Risser Lee
From age 12, Chaplain (Brigadier General) Kenneth "Ed" Brandt
’81 felt a calling to serve in the church. Only decades later did he realize the calling was more specific: it was a calling to be a military chaplain. Now as the Chief Chaplain for the Army National Guard and National Guard Bureau Joint Chaplain, he has worked in all 50 states, three territories, District of Columbia, and countries around the world to provide armed forces with the support that can be found through faith.
Deployed in 2008, Brandt worked with American troops on the ground as they faced unimaginable struggles. Oftentimes, he would listen to and guide soldiers who had experienced a traumatic event. “In military chaplaincy, you’re dealing with life and death issues,” he said. “I work on helping them reframe their thoughts and think through how to attack their issues, and helping them through any spiritual issues or conflicts they may be having.”

After completing his tour, Brandt remained in the military in various roles, providing military leadership with guidance and working to expand the mission of chaplaincy around the world.
With his days of serving in a theater abroad behind him, Brandt now travels overseas as Chief Chaplain for the Army National Guard to work with foreign countries as part of an international network of military chaplains. In this role, he leads worship and says prayers at events but does not believe in proselytizing the service members he meets. Rather, his goal is to create a framework that is general in nature but brings out the best in humanity. To that end, he works with other chaplains for Muslims, Catholics, and Jews all over the world to ensure spiritual support for those who serve.
Each American state, territory, and District of Columbia are part of a state partnership program. Through these partnerships, leaders in the military
chaplaincies have the opportunity to work together to generate new ideas and support one another. In some cases, they even work together to build a military chaplaincy program from the ground up, as did Brandt with Ohio’s partner country of Serbia in 2014. He went to the country and met with military leaders and spiritual leaders of various faiths to celebrate a program and partnership that will go on to help thousands of people in Serbia’s military forces.
Brandt’s Serbia experiences have emphasized to him how similar people around the world are, but how different life experiences can be. “We all have the same basic needs, the need to be validated, to have rites of passage, to be forgiven and redeemed,” he said. “The thing that makes us different is our cultural background, how we understand things.” Brandt finds the structure provided by the military beneficial to this type of spiritual outreach. He believes that working with leadership to solve issues and make decisions is a good model of teamwork and collegiality, which helps make hard decisions easier. “It doesn’t matter where a fellow chaplain is from, the theological language is spoken across national boundaries,” he pointed out.
As he helps others explore and strengthen their spirituality, Brandt learns more about himself and his role every day. “When you’re dealing with people from all walks of life, from all age groups, you need to know who you are,” he said. “As my role became more defined, I had a well of experience to draw from, and it had more of an impact on people to whom I was speaking.”
Brandt nurtured the calling he felt at a young age at the University of Findlay, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in religion, philosophy, and Christian education. He started his path on a campus grounded in Christian faith and grew through his education. Because of this, he has been able to help people around the world by connecting through faith.

Tough Tuskegee
Lt. Col. Harold H. Brown Awarded Honorary Doctorate at University of Findlay
By Jack Barger ‘01 | Photography by Anne Risser Lee

Much of this story was adapted from the book “Keep Your Airspeed Up: The Story of a Tuskegee Airman,” written by Harold H. Brown and Marsha S. Bordner, and published by University Alabama Press in 2017.
WORKING TOWARD GOALS UNDER VARIOUS
types of adversity is something that college students across the globe are familiar with. It’s no different at University of Findlay, where meeting due dates, studying for many hours, and making their way through social life are all things that students manage on their way to a degree and a meaningful life and productive career.
The challenges Lt. Col. Harold Brown faced during his early life and military career, however, were far different. For his bravery, Brown, one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, was presented with an honorary doctorate from UF at the 2019 Veterans Day ceremony on campus.
“We are deeply pleased to have conferred an honorary doctorate upon Harold Brown,” said University of Findlay President Katherine Fell, Ph.D. “As a Tuskegee Airman, he demonstrated unparalleled bravery and dedication to our country, and we

thank him for his sacrifices and service.”
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps, a precursor of the U.S. Air Force. The men flew more than 15,000 missions in Europe and North Africa during World War II, and were awarded many Distinguished Flying Crosses. Their heroism encouraged the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces.
At age 16, and while a junior in high school, Brown was able to save $35 – a lot of money in 1941 – to take flying lessons. “My mother went berserk,” he said. “She thought I threw the money away.” His dad, he continued, came to his defense, explaining to his mother that it was Harold’s money that he worked hard for, and that he should be able to spend it how he wanted. He began the lessons, and “the kids used to tease me and call me Lindbergh,” he said. “They said ‘they won’t even let you wash a plane,’ but I told them that by the time I’m ready, everything will have changed. And that’s precisely what happened.” The lessons turned out to be priceless, as they inevitably helped him in earning a shot as a military pilot during World War II.
As a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, Brown flew many missions, but the one that he remembers most clearly is one that caused him to come faceto-face with his own mortality. He was shot down at low altitude on a mission during the war, and had to eject. “I was up in that chute all by myself. Twentyyears old, in Germany, looking like this,” he said. He was captured by some Germans upon landing and taken to a village where, he recollected, “it was very clear what their intentions were. I knew I was going to die that day. I couldn’t see a way out.” But from somewhere among the throngs of people surrounding them came a constable who stepped in front of Brown, put a round in his rifle, and saved him from certain death. “We barricaded ourselves in a pub down the road, and when it was clear, he took me to another village and turned me over.”
In 2007, the Tuskegee Airmen, as a group, were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest and most distinguished civilian award. The U.S. Congress gives this medal to individuals or groups for exceptional service to our country. The courage and insight that came from the Tuskegee experience carried on for Brown after the United States was liberated from the war and he returned
stateside. As a Tuskegee, he said, he had a choice to remain in the military, and, since his goal had always been to be a military pilot, he decided to do just that. “I was also highly motivated,” he said. “I was determined I was not going to be second best. I was, and am, goal-driven. The military has a very clearly defined hierarchy of rank, so my plan was always to be moving up.”
Brown’s military tenure included a significant role with Strategic Air Command, flying in 20 types of aircraft, and spanned over two decades in the service. Upon retiring from the military, he took up a career in higher education, and as he spent much of his prior career as a military pilot instructor and a few years as an electronics instructor in the Air Force Training Command Navigator School, he said that the transition was “fairly easy.” He continued his involvement in higher education with Columbus Area Technical School/Columbus Tech, Clark Technical College, and Gaston College.
In a life that has been filled with setting and achieving goals, Brown has been continuously striving to better himself. Now, at the age of 95, Brown, who along with his wife Dr. Marsha Bordner, has made presentations at over 100 venues, has achieved yet another from UF. Referencing a previous presentation at the University, Brown said that one of the couple’s favorite venues is Findlay. “It is so easy to see why Findlay is soaring under Dr. Fell’s tutelage. Our event was overflowing with people who care about history and military service. The feeling of patriotism in that auditorium was palpable. Receiving this honorary doctorate is the icing on the cake,” he said. Brown, in the book he co-wrote with his wife titled "Keep Your Airspeed Up: The Story of a Tuskegee Airman," said that, in these golden years of his life, he has been struck by one consistent theme, one that can be of help to college students and others alike: constantly setting goals for oneself. “As soon as I had successfully achieved one goal, I would immediately set another one, which again would require meaningful effort, plain old-fashioned hard work, and flat out stubbornness to refuse anything less than a successful outcome. For whatever traits that have been instilled in me by my parents,” he said, “there was always the idea that failure was not an option.”

“They said ‘they won’t even let you wash a plane,’ but I told them that by the time I’m ready, everything will have changed. And that’s precisely what happened.”

Donor Impact

"Regularly thanking our nation’s military veterans and active service members for their sacrifices is essential, but it’s also important to recognize their lifelong giving philosophy. So many graciously give of their time, knowledge, and earnings to ensure that University of Findlay students can earn their degrees and go on to serve in myriad ways themselves. Therefore, we thank you, U.S. veterans, military personnel, and families, for your enormous generosity!"
Findlay Fund Has RecordBreaking Year
Great things are continuing to happen for our students thanks to The President’s Leadership Society and other Findlay Fund givers! This fund has the distinction of having the greatest impact at UF because it assists in so many areas. Funds are used for necessities that range from classroom technology upgrades to supporting research initiatives and vital student wellness services.
Just a few of the many successes that have come for UF in 2018-19 with the help of a record-setting year for unrestricted funds are:
A BUILDING PROJECT - The Mazza Museum is preparing to break ground on a new 4,000-squarefoot addition to the Mazza Museum. The Conda STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics/medicine) Education Center will blend the art of picture books with hard science for children of all ages.
AN ANIMAL STUDIES PARTNERSHIP - The University solidified its collaboration with Loop Abroad, the top veterinary study abroad program in the country, by being named the school of record for the organization. As part of the partnership, Findlay students and students from any other university who participate in the program will earn college credit for their study abroad experience with Loop from UF.
Marcia Sloan Latta, Ed.D. Vice President for University Advancement
youThank for Serving!

A BIG EQUESTRIAN WIN - Once again, the talent of our equestrian riders and coaches put the national spotlight on the University this past spring. For the second consecutive year, the IHSA Western team was the American Quarter Horse Association national champion. This win marks the seventh National Championship for the IHSA Western Team.
MORE GIVING - The success of the University’s spring 2019 Day of Giving was record breaking. UF more than doubled its goal of 250 donations in a 24hour period on March 20 and 21 by receiving 584 gifts totaling $100,565.

AEP Foundation and UF Partner to Provide New Scholarships
For many years, the University of Findlay and American Electric Power have enjoyed a collaborative relationship that has helped countless students earn their degrees. Most recently, three scholarships between the AEP Foundation and UF were created that will provide much-needed aid to students pursuing rewarding, serviceoriented careers. The AEP Foundation contributed $500,000.
The scholarships include:
• The American Electric Power Foundation Endowed Scholarship in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math/medicine) Education Fund, which will go to a student who is enrolled in accounting or finance or any programs in the College of Health Professions, College of Pharmacy or College of Sciences;
• The American Electric Power Foundation Findlay Forward Scholarship for Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability, which will impact eight to 15 students annually over five years; and

• The Business Affiliates Scholarship program provides critical financial support to UF students with financial need who either graduated from a Hancock County high school or who are currently employed by a Hancock County business.
According to Karen George, UF’s senior director of advancement, all three scholarships will have immense benefits to the students who receive them.
“The Business Affiliates scholarship has already had an immediate impact,” George explained. “We’ve overshot our goal, and have been able to add on four additional scholarships. It’s just fantastic. We’re so fortunate to create these possibilities together.”
Fundraising Efforts Receive International Accolades

University Advancement recently had an additional, and rather atypical, reason to thank all of its outstanding donors: personnel received the highly competitive 2019 Educational Fundraising Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This international recognition, which represents a first for UF, reflects hard-earned efforts that resonated with many; more than 5,000 were eligible, and only 44 other institutions were Most Improved Fundraising Program Award winners.
A blind review of institutional data voluntarily submitted to CASE during the past three years was used to pinpoint and celebrate exemplary development programs. UF was specifically lauded for its program growth in areas such as major and planned gift increases, donor growth, alumni giving participation, and increased alumni and volunteer engagement. Tailored fundraising ideas aimed at cultivating a greater culture of giving have focused on meaningful interaction, individualistic endeavors, and fun activities.
“The support and involvement we have received in recent years to provide educational opportunities for our students, as well as support for other areas such as athletics, the arts, and even our animal population, has been phenomenal,” said Marcia Latta, Ed.D., vice president for University Advancement. “We are truly blessed to have such strong campus-wide backing, along with increased donor engagement from near and far.”
Successful UF fundraising initiatives have included:
• Major gift fundraising, which saw overall cash donations increase by 68%, and a 13% increase in UF’s endowment market value;
• Planned giving, in which the average gift size increased by 44%;
• Day of Giving, featuring the 2019 “Oiler Up, Give Back” campaign raised $100,565 (far surpassing $28,698 raised in 2018) and collected 584 gifts during a 24-hour period in March.
• 100% Oilers, the annual faculty and staff giving campaign that included 86.7% participation during 2017-18; and
• Graduating Class Gift Program, which garnered 247 financial gifts, handed out 225 cords to wear during commencement, and raised $5,077.

ADDISON GRAHAM

Kyle Nierman M’15
Making the leap from high school to college athletics often proves to be a difficult task and requires toughness and determination. For University of Findlay freshman soccer player Addison Graham, those qualities were instilled at a young age, and with much more on the line than playing time.
At the age of nine, Addison "Addie," a Perrysburg, Ohio native, visited the dermatologist to have a spot on her upper arm examined. After a painful biopsy, during which Addie says, “I was tough and did not cry at all,” doctors called the Grahams and asked them to return to the office to share the results.
“I knew as soon as the doctor’s office called and asked us to come in that it was serious,” said Addie’s mother, Beth. “It was one of the scariest moments of our lives. I begged the nurse to let me know what the diagnosis was because I wanted to be able to be calm for Addie and (father) Ian.”
What the doctor shared was that the spot was malignant fibrous histiosarcoma of the upper arm. According to the National Cancer Institute, the disease is a type of cancer that forms in soft tissue and can occur anywhere in the body, but is commonly found in arms and legs. It is much more common in adults than in children.
“My parents explained the diagnosis to me and my brothers and I seemed to really understand,” Addie said. “I went to my classroom with my mom and she was going to try to explain my cancer to them. I held her hand and said, ‘Mom, I will tell them,’ and explained it perfectly.”
“She handled it extremely well,” said Beth. “She was never scared or down.”
Now that the Grahams had a diagnosis, it was time for treatment to begin. After appointments at Toledo Children’s Hospital and at the University of Michigan Mott’s Children’s Hospital, it was determined that surgery would be needed.
Addie went under the knife to have the sarcoma removed but, since malignant fibrous histiosarcoma is so rare in children, it has not been widely researched, and it was determined that she would need another surgery to remove even more of the surrounding tissue.
This string of events seems anything but easy, especially at the age of nine, but that’s exactly the verbiage Addie used to describe her ordeal.
“Luckily for me, the type of cancer I had was easily treated,” Addie remarked. “My attitude was always very positive, just worrying about getting treated.”
Naturally, after a mass of tissue is removed from an arm, the spot needs to be stitched so that it can heal properly. However, these stitches meant time on the sideline for Addie, who was learning to love the game of soccer. But, as Addie recalls, even those stitches couldn’t stop her.
The Oilers were the winners of the 201819 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) President’s Cup, which is awarded to the institution that maintains the highest winning percentage across all sports in an academic year.
Out of UF’s 602 studentathletes in 2018-19, 112 were named allconference and 13 were named conference Athlete of the Year in their respective sport.
Oilers’ student-athletes had an academic success rate of 88% last school year, which is 22 points above the national average. Also, 211 student-athletes finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, the most in the country in NCAA Division II.
The fall 2019 season has been distinguished by the men’s and women’s golf programs. Combined, they’d won five of the seven tournaments completed as of Oct. 8. Also in October, the women’s team was ranked sixth in the country, which represents the highest ranking in UF program history.
“I had a big soccer game just a few days after my surgery. I played in the game because it meant so much to me. Soccer was my outlet and a good distraction from what was going on,” she said.
Addie’s mom, Beth, commented, “Our family and the soccer community became our support system and a distraction for Addie. She was determined to get back to soccer as soon as possible and her philosophy was she didn’t need her arm for soccer, just her feet.”
Enter the University of Findlay and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Make-A-Wish, a foundation that grants wishes to children battling serious illness, reached out to the Grahams after hearing about Addie. The family was reluctant at first, but accepted the offer when they realized how much fun it could be for their daughter.
In their first year of partnering with Make-A-Wish, the University of Findlay Athletic Department, led by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), was paired with the Grahams to help raise money for Addie’s wish, which was to go to Disney World and Universal Studios.
On Jan. 12, 2013, Addie was on campus at Findlay in Croy Gymnasium where a packed house helped raise a portion of the money that would make her wish come true. Addie remembers that day very clearly.
“I have always loved Coach Jimmy (who previously coached club soccer in the Perrysburg area) growing up and I knew he would make me a better player and help me grow as a person,” she said.
Addie’s father Ian, a goalkeeper coach at Findlay, says there was no pressure put on his daughter.
“Addie fell in love with Findlay and made the choice on her own. Make-A-Wish made her really want to come, but Jimmy’s coaching style was also a big part of her decision.”
On the subject of coaching his daughter, Ian said, “I have the best seat in the house as a dad to watch her play for the next four years. The battles she has had at a young age helped mold her into who she is today. Adds has a spark inside her, a strong drive and work ethic that will make her successful in anything she does on the field, classroom, and life.”

“I came with some of my closest friends. They (the student-athletes) made me feel very special,” she said.
Her mother added, “The student-athletes were nothing short of amazing.”
After returning to have X-rays taken every six months for the next five years, and just once a year since then, Addie is cancer free and has been excelling at the game of soccer.
When it came time to be recruited, Addie, who led Perrysburg to a state runner-up finish in 2017 and scored more than 70 goals in her career, had many schools knocking on her door. But one school stood alone.
“Findlay has always been close to my heart because of me coming when I was a Make-A-Wish child,” Addie said. But it was her relationship with women’s soccer coach Jimmy Walker that may have tipped the scale even further.
“As a parent, a diagnosis of cancer for one of your children is heartbreaking. We are extremely lucky that Addie had two surgeries and is now clear,” Beth said. “No one is promised tomorrow.”
While she is now cancer free, Addie does not forget or take lightly everything she endured as a child.
“Hearing the word ‘cancer’ makes my stomach drop every time. Beating cancer has taught me never to take life for granted and has taught me to be so mentally and physically tough. Going through that at such a young age made me grow up fast,” she said
That growth has been visible, especially on the field. Now a regular in the lineup for the very school she visited as a young child, Addie helped Findlay to an undefeated start to the season. "The news gets even better: in November, the women's soccer team had won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season championship, which represented their first conference title since joining the NCAA, and earned its first NCAA Division II playoff berth in school history."
“Addie has always had to be tough and aggressive as a player as she does not possess huge size,” said Findlay head coach Jimmy Walker. “But what she lacks in height she more than makes up for in desire.”

“Findlay has always been close to my heart because of me coming when I was a Make-A-Wish child,”
Addie
said.
