Dear Oilers, Gold confetti sparkled through the air surrounding our members of the Class of 1975 at their 50th reunion, as they received their Golden Diplomas under the Arch during Homecoming.

The celebration reminded me that while the days rush by, it is easy to be carried away by daily duties – the next project, the upcoming event, the detailed plans, the goal to achieve.

Yet, in the midst of our ever-present to-do lists, it is essential that we take time to pause and take joy in our beloved University’s progress.

For 20 consecutive years, UF has earned top rankings in “America’s Best Colleges” list by U.S. News & World Report. That distinction shines a light on our academic excellence, our championship-worthy Oiler athletics, and the successes of the nearly 30,000 alumni around the world. This edition of Findlay Magazine highlights some of our remarkable Oiler alumni, donors, students, athletes, faculty, and friends.

As you may be aware, I have announced my retirement from UF, as of June 2026. The special opportunity to be a part of the Findlay family for 16 years has been a profound gift. Roger and I will be forever grateful for the inspiration you have been.

The search process is currently under way for a new campus leader. In the meantime, there is much good work to complete this year as we meet challenges and create opportunities.

Outstanding Alumni Awards

During Homecoming and Family Weekend 2025, the University of Findlay’s Alumni Association recognized six alumni and friends who exemplify the values, ethics, and mission of the University.

Three graduates were honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award presented to those who have exhibited the highest standards of achievement in professional or personal endeavors, demonstrated loyalty and support of UF, and contributed to the advancement of all humanity.

Pastor Robert Brougher ’74 has represented the

Earl earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Findlay College while serving as a resident assistant and head resident. Playing on the baseball team for two years, he was co-captain his senior year. He also sang in the chorale and played Snoopy in a campus production of “Charlie Brown.”

In 1979, he was appointed as a division controller with Worthington Industries in Columbus, Ohio, for four years before he became the plant controller for Worthington Steel in Baltimore, Maryland. He went on to top managerial and financial positions at Tailor Welded Blanks in Monroe, Michigan, along with Borden Chemical, Inc. and HMS Partners, both in Columbus.

His career culminated as assistant vice president/general manager at YSK Corporation in Chillicothe, Ohio, the highest position afforded an American with the Japaneseowned company. He served there for 10 years, retiring in 2013.

Continuing his love of baseball, Earl played semi-pro baseball in Tampa, Florida. The team was the 1992 league champion, and he was named MVP. He was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

At UF, he created the Earl M. Fletcher ’75 Scholarship with a planned gift. He is a member of the C.T. Fox Legacy Society and served on Alumni Council from 1997-2001.

A frequent fan at numerous Oiler athletic events, he was honored with an informal award many times over as the University’s “Greatest Fan.” UF recognizes Earl for his success in financial and corporate management, his dedication to community service, and his support of UF students and student-athletes.

A Passion for Global Outreach The Old Main Award is presented to a UF alumnus who has demonstrated distinctive achievements in a chosen career, civic involvement, and service to the University – and has not reached the age of 36.

Jennifer (Racheter) Wilson ’78 has spent

her life in the service of Findlay students, her fellow sorority members, and community residents with special needs.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Findlay College and was a student leader on campus, serving in student government, as a residential advisor, and as an active member of the Delta Zeta sorority.

After graduation, Jennifer was employed at a number of banking institutions in the Findlay area, including Fifth Third and the Ohio Bank. She recently retired after serving 20 years as an administrative assistant for the Wyandot County Board of Developmental Disabilities in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Throughout her professional career, she maintained her sorority connections through active participation in the local Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter. She has consistently supported the UF chapter and served in an advisory capacity as needed.

At UF, Jennifer has supported the Mazza Museum, the Findlay Fund, the Class of 1978 Library Memorabilia and Display Case Fund, and the Theta Tau Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority Award. She also served on the Alumni Board of Governors.

The University recognizes Jennifer for her loyal support, dedication to her sorority sisters, and service to the next generation of Oiler students.

While pursuing his doctoral degree in pharmacy at UF, he started the Oilers Serving Abroad program on campus, making several mission trips to the Dominican Republic.

Additionally, he traveled to India twice with UF pharmacy faculty member Chandra Sekur, R.Ph., Ph.D., to share his expertise with several hundred Indian pharmacy students. He also volunteered in Canada and Belize with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.

After graduation, he accepted a Peace Corps volunteer position in Cambodia, educating and monitoring 84 patients in a small village. Returning to the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked for a public health department in Arlington, Virginia, and a community health center in Clarkson, Georgia.

about “the idea of a community – how to build one and how to contribute to one. I learned how to communicate with others and create lasting relationships.”

Since 2021, Dallas has been an epidemic intelligence officer of the mycotic diseases branch for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among his many duties, Dallas serves as a subject matter expert and program lead for fungal neglected tropical diseases in the mycotic diseases branch.

He also collaborates with the World Health Organization to implement global surveillance of mycetoma and chromoblastomycosis.

He has continued his education, earning a clinical tropical medicine and online global health curriculum certificate from the University of Minnesota, plus a master’s of applied science in global health from Johns Hopkins University.

UF recognizes Dallas for his passion to care for underserved people of the world, his commitment to educating others to promote public health, and his generosity in sharing his knowledge to make a difference internationally.

A Worldly View of Education

The Gold Medallion Award is presented posthumously to a deceased alumnus with distinguished career accomplishments who made outstanding contributions to their professions, the University, or their community.

The Arch Award is presented to a member of the community, faculty, or staff who does not hold a degree from UF but has given 15 years or more of service and demonstrated their loyalty and support to UF.

Jeanne (Williams) Wasbro ’66, who passed

away in May 2025, lived her life to be a blessing to others – as a teacher, in her church, and on campus.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in English, cum laude, from Findlay College and taught English and French at Cory Rawson High School and English at Central Junior High School. After receiving a master’s in the teaching of reading from Bowling Green State University, she taught at Washington Elementary School. She was also the co-owner of Custom Engines and Wasbro Rental Property.

With her husband, Jack ’65, she was an avid

Jeanne was a member and treasurer for Findlay Town & Campus, active member in the Curtain Raisers Performing Arts Society, and a Mazza Museum Enthusiast.

The couple established the Jack ’65 and Jeanne ’66 Wasbro Education Scholarship Endowment Fund. Jeanne also was a member of the C.T. Fox Legacy Society and the Players Club of the Oiler Heritage Society.

An advocate of community service, Jeanne was an area chair for Northwest Ohio for AFS Intercultural Programs and hosted students for 20 years. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church and later St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Jeanne’s daughter, Jill Wagner ’92, accepted the award for her mother, noting, “She loved her hometown and was a proud Oiler.”

William Doyle, Ph.D., is a retired UF faculty member who served for 20 years as an assistant professor in the environmental, health, safety, and occupational health management program. He is a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed a long career as a Marathon Oil Co. executive before he began teaching at UF.

He earned a bachelor of science from the University of Maryland College Park, along with a master’s degree and doctoral degree in civil engineering from the University of Alabama.

Through Bill’s experience and scholarship in emergency management, he has given numerous presentations, produced publications, and submitted grants focused on disaster management and preparedness.

Accepting the award, he noted that 21 countries were represented among the students whom he taught. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to view the world through the eyes of these students,” he said.

Also active in community service, Bill has been a volunteer and leader for the United Way of Hancock County, Hancock Senior Leadership, and Habitat for Humanity.

He was honored with the United Way’s Distinguished Volunteer of the Year award.

He and his wife Maile are long-time members of the Curtain Raisers Performing Arts Society and they also have supported the Findlay Fund and Women in Philanthropy.

UF recognizes Bill for his dedication to teaching UF students, his commitment to environmental and safety research, and his support of higher education.

Program Launched to Foster Future Community Leaders

he University of Findlay is launching the Watterson Center for Ethical Leadership this fall and has appointed Sarah Fedirka, Ph.D., as director.

The Watterson Center for Ethical Leadership is named for Board of Trustees member Billy Watterson ’96 and his wife, Brenda, who made a $6 million gift to launch the center.

The program curriculum includes service projects, undergraduate research, and travel to the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, the Ohio state capitol, and New York City. A Hancock Collegiate Leadership Academy, offered in conjunction with the FindlayHancock County Chamber of

Ph.D., anticipates that the initial class of students will be fully immersed in the Watterson Center’s mission: “to inspire ethical leaders who will impact their world.”

News Briefs STEM Students to Receive Half-Million in Scholarships starting this fall from a $500,000 scholarship fund generously donated in memory of pioneer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Austin “Dutch” E. Knowlton.

The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation has awarded UF $100,000 annually for the next five years.

“The Knowlton Foundation’s kind philanthropic support will help our students to forge new paths and achieve their educational dreams,” UF President Katherine Fell, Ph.D., said. “These scholarships allow Oilers to enjoy transformative academic experiences, make lifelong friends, and grow in ways they never imagined.”

Knowlton established the Foundation in 1981 in recognition of his business success and civic involvement. He funded it during his lifetime and, through his will, created a lasting impact that continues to support students and higher education across the Midwest.

Scholarships are required to be awarded to freshmen from Ohio majoring in a STEM or STEM-related program, or students from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, or Michigan with a STEM or STEM-related major. Students in good academic standing are eligible to receive the scholarship for multiple years.

She also oversees the College Credit Plus (CCP) program, which grew into the largest private concurrent enrollment program in Ohio with more than 2,500 students. New Academic Programs Include Biology Pre-Med, Business Analytics Upholding its commitment to academic excellence, UF is offering a number of new academic programs designed to prepare students for careers in demand in current and future workplaces.

A new biology pre-medicine program will prepare students for success in medical school and healthcarerelated careers. Beginning this fall, prospective students can select the new undergraduate track giving them a pathway toward professional schools and colleges in medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, physician assistant, and optometry.

Students will take rigorous coursework in biology, chemistry, and human physiology with hands-on clinical experience and personalized pre-med advising.

Students will have opportunities to conduct undergraduate research and participate in the Pre-Med Club.

In the College of Business, a Business Analytics certificate and major is being offered, emphasizing the ability to use storytelling and graphics to communicate data, which is a prime skill required in many industries.

Students will learn how to ask the right questions of the data, and

how best to collect it, evaluate its accuracy, and then present it so the content is clearly received with actionable conclusions.

The new 2+2 engineering pathway program is designed for students to enroll at UF for two years with the intention of transferring to two area universities. Findlay students can choose their pathway to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering from Ohio Northern University or a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Wright State University.

Student Awards &Achievements Chemistry Students Present Research

UF chemistry majors traveled to Washington D.C. for the Fall 2025 American Chemical Society national meeting. Daniel Osborne, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, and his students showcased the research they are accomplishing on campus. “We had three offers for collaborative work from academia and industry,” he noted.

Giovanna and Audrey presented research on the selectivity of all five S1PR receptors, which will lead to the development of drugs used to treat autoimmune diseases, Osborne explained.

Theta Chi Fraternity Honored UF’s Theta Chi Fraternity received the Chapter Excellence Award for demonstrating expertise and excellence in alumni engagement, campus involvement, community service, internal cooperation, member education, safety, and social programming. Junior Ethan Lantz of Clyde, Ohio achieved “Resolute Man” status. The Theta Chi Resolute Man program guides undergraduate members to obtain the most out of their collegiate experience to best prepare them for life after graduation. He is the first UF Theta Chi to receive this honor.

“This is a true testament to the heart and effort our brothers have poured into this fraternity since its rebirth in March 2024,” chapter president David May said. “We started with just five brothers, dropped to three that fall, and as of Spring 2025, we’ve grown to a strong group of 12 brothers.”

Theta Chi chapter alumni president Che Brindle ’98, M’13 said the alumni are proud of the work of their young fraternity brothers, adding, “It’s encouraging and rewarding to see recognition for the efforts put forth by both the chapter and Ethan.”

OTD Cohort Achieves Perfect Pass Rate

This summer, the UF occupational therapy program celebrated as the entire 2025 cohort passed their National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. Congratulations to these new Oiler occupational therapists! Computer Science Student ‘Excels’ at Nationals Chase Otto, a UF sophomore majoring in computer science, earned the title of national champion at the 2025 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) U.S. National Championship in Grapevine, Texas, where he emerged as the top competitor in the Microsoft Excel event.

Thousands of U.S. students entered by submitting a qualified passing score on certification exams in MOS Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. UF’s computer science department is an authorized testing center for the MOS exams.

Students in CSCI 155, 157, and 149 courses are required to take certain exams as part of their coursework. They can opt in to be considered to represent Ohio in the national competition.

Praising the CSCI 155 spreadsheet design course he took, Otto said he felt “shock and amazement” when his name was announced.

The champion received $3,000, a medal of achievement, a trophy, a gift from Microsoft, and an invitation to compete on a wider scale.

UF Students Explore Italian Classrooms Undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Education traveled to Italy in the summer, led by Carrie Wysocki, Ph.D., assistant professor in education.

They visited elementary, secondary and high schools for classroom observations, witnessing how students with disabilities are rarely separated.

Each student is contributing a chapter to a book they are collectively writing on the collaboration and history of students with disabilities in both the U.S. and Italy.

Alumni Spotlight: Obe Destiny Balogun M '17, Pharm.D. Q: Can you share a little about your background and what brought you to the University of Findlay for your graduate studies?

I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy degree in Nigeria in 2007 and built a career across both retail and hospital pharmacy. Those years in patient care made me appreciate the systems that keep people healthy and safe. Over time, I became aware of how environmental and workplace factors influence

veterinary medicine. She was instrumental in the development of the preveterinary major and had been a UF faculty member since 1986. She and Wayne, who passed away October 25, 2025, had most recently been living in Midland, North Carolina.

They met at Ohio State University and both graduated from OSU. Their time in Findlay was dedicated to students. Linda was honored with the Founders' Award for Faculty in 2003.

She also served as an associate veterinarian at Findlay Animal Care Center and Findlay Animal Clinic.

Additionally, Linda was honored with the Arch Award in 2018, which is presented to a member of the UF community who has demonstrated loyalty and support of the institution for at least 25 years and does not hold a UF degree.

Wayne was a financial adviser and owner of Successful Solutions, and later joined Savage and Associates.

He served as a member of the University’s Bequest and Planned Giving Council.

These roles combined two of his favorite pastimes: serving others and connecting with people.

Q: What made you choose Environmental, Safety, and Health Management as your field of study?

My pharmacy background taught me that true healthcare means preventing harm, not just treating illness. My master's program helped me apply science and leadership to create safer, healthier communities.

Q: You’ve done impressive work in pharmacy and healthcare research. What inspired your passion for this field?

I have always been fascinated by how science can directly improve lives. Being in the pharmacy field exposed me to the intersection of research, innovation, and patient care. That experience inspired me to go beyond dispensing medication and to understand the broader systems that sustain health.

Q: How has your Findlay education influenced your professional path or research interests?

My time at Findlay helped me bridge theory and practice.

The program deepened my understanding of how environmental and safety factors affect health and reshaped my approach to pharmacy. The professors emphasized critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership skills that continue to guide my professional decisions and research interests today.

Q: What have been some of the biggest challenges or adjustments you’ve faced as an international professional in the U.S.?

Transitioning to a new culture came with its challenges. I had to adapt to new communication styles and learn to advocate for myself. To be able to practice pharmacy in the U.S., I had to go through a rigorous licensing process. It took determination, but I was able to meet all the requirements and become a licensed pharmacist. Practicing pharmacy in the U.S. has been deeply rewarding.

Q: How did practicing pharmacy in Nigeria shape the way you view healthcare and research today?

Practicing pharmacy in Nigeria grounded me in patient care while highlighting issues like healthcare access, safety, and prevention. It taught me

the importance of building systems that protect people before problems arise. That global awareness continues to shape how I view healthcare, as a universal human priority centered on equity and impact.

Q: What stands out most when you think back on your time at Findlay—any professors, classmates, or experiences that left an impact on you?

The professors were truly dedicated, and one who made a lasting impression on me was Dr. Bill Doyle. He wasn’t just a professor. He was a mentor who genuinely cared about his students. His guidance went far beyond the classroom, and his passion for teaching made learning so enjoyable. The diversity among classmates made learning rich and collaborative.

It wasn’t just an academic experience. It felt like a family.

Q: What advice would you share with current international students or new graduates beginning their careers?

Embrace every opportunity to learn. Be proactive, network, and value your unique perspective.

Stay patient, stay curious, and trust that persistence will lead to growth and success.

Along with their endowed scholarship, the generosity of these two loyal Oilers also extended to the Findlay Fund, the pre-vet program and the Curtain Raisers Performing Arts Society.

Wayne will be remembered “whether grilling for 300 prevet students or cheering on the Oilers, he showed up with a smile and a story to share.”

Alyssa Aponte Gorilla Keeper, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

When Alyssa Aponte ’20 walks into work each morning at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, she’s stepping into a world few people ever experience: one shared with eight western lowland gorillas, including three juvenile gorillas. As part of the zoo’s animal care team, Aponte trains and cares for these remarkable animals, teaching them behaviors that build trust and support their lifelong health and wellbeing. “There’s this incredible moment when you can see it click in the kids’ eyes.

When they truly understand what you’re asking of them,” she said. “It’s a privilege to be part of that connection.”

Aponte has built her career around those moments of understanding. As a gorilla keeper, she helps establish new behaviors that allow the animals to voluntarily participate in their own healthcare, from blood draws to X-rays, reducing the need for anesthesia and improving their long-term well-being. “Training with the juveniles is always rewarding because I know we’re setting them up for healthier, happier lives,” she explained.

“Kayembe,” for the first time. “He’s 4 years old now and full of energy,” she said with a smile. “It’s been amazing to watch him grow. Someday, he’ll be a silverback with his own troop, and knowing I played a small part in his story is incredible.”

The UF grad is passionate about helping people understand the role modern zoos play in conservation. “Accredited zoos are so much more than places to see animals,” she explained. “We’re leaders in wildlife conservation, research, and education.” The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo partners with organizations worldwide to support anti-poaching initiatives, habitat restoration, and other critical efforts to protect endangered species. “Every day, we work to connect people with wildlife and inspire them to take care of our planet,” she added.

While gorillas hold a big piece of her heart, Aponte admits her favorite animal will always be the Mueller’s gibbon, the first species she ever trained. “One gibbon in particular, Pikachu, will always be special to me. And honestly, watching gibbons walk around with their arms flailing in the air never fails to make me laugh.”

She credits her time at UF for preparing her to succeed in a competitive field.

“My animal handling classes were invaluable,” she pointed out. “I still use those skills every time we need to catch animals for procedures.” She fondly recalls the campus traditions that made Findlay memorable, from avoiding the red dots on campus to waiting until Commencement day to finally walk through the Arch.

Outside the classroom, Aponte was involved in residence life, serving as an RA and later as an RD. “Some of my favorite college memories come from that experience,” she recalled. “We worked hard, planned fun events, and built lifelong friendships.”

Her advice for young Oilers aspiring to work in animal care is simple but powerful: “The field is competitive, but don’t let that scare you,” she said.

“Every experience is a chance to grow.

Take on opportunities even when they feel intimidating. Growth happens just beyond the edge of fear. I can say with confidence that I love what I do every single day. Chase your passion relentlessly – it’s worth it.”

A senior from Kalida, Ohio, majoring in psychology with a minor in special education, Brooke receives the Stefan Psychology Endowed Scholarship.

She will graduate in December with her bachelor’s degree and continue her studies at UF to obtain a doctorate in school psychology.

A sixth-year student in the dual degree program for pharmacy and health informatics, Elaine, of Fremont, California, expects to graduate in 2026.

She has co-written several articles for UF’s medical publication, ARxCH; she tutors fifth-year pharmacy students; and she is a member of the American Pharmacists Association and Phi Kappa Phi.

A junior from Bellville, Ohio, with a dual major in accounting and supply chain management, Seth receives the Shiv K. Gupta Endowed Business Scholarship, the Frederick Kremer Jr. Endowed Scholarship, the Paula and John Wolper Endowed Scholarship, and the Dr. Kenneth Buchenroth Endowed Scholarship.

She chose the University because of “the welcoming faculty who took the time to meet with me, discuss the program, allow me to sit in on classes, and make the campus feel like home. That initial kindness confirmed that Findlay was the right place for me.”

Brooke is very active on campus – a research lab manager for Allison Kiefner Burmeister, Ph.D., public relations officer for honor fraternities Psy Key and Psi Chi, a member of Mortarboard and the Honors Student Association. Off campus, she volunteers with Gliding Stars, teaching young people with disabilities how to skate, and she teaches English at a summer migrant school in Putnam County.

Elaine is completing a clinical rotation at the Cleveland Clinic and also has volunteered at Birchaven Retirement Village assisting senior citizens with technology education and giving healthcare presentations.

She is grateful to be supported by the Women’s Philanthropic Initiative Endowed Scholarship and noted, “I must admit that the tuition and expenses have been demanding for me and my family as an out-of-state student. The assistance and support you provide have brought me great comfort and honor.”

“I hope to go into auditing after graduation while continuing to further my passion for photography,” he explained. “The College of Business here at Findlay is filled with wonderful people who give me the tools to succeed in my future career.”

Seth has performed as a cellist in the UF orchestra, and he serves in the Student Government Association, where he is the vice president this year.

“I would not be able to do all of this without your gracious support with these scholarships. Your generosity allows the next generation of leaders here to change the world.”

n an era when things can change faster than you can refresh your social media feed, Marathon Petroleum Corporation and the University of Findlay have bucked that trend. These two institutions, 138 and 143 years old, respectively, have stood the test of time.

Amid evolutions in which both the energy and higher education spaces have advanced, the values and guiding principles of Marathon and the University have remained steadfast.

“What’s unique for both is a long history,” said Brian Partee MBA ’05, Marathon’s chief business transformation officer and a UF Board of Trustees member. “The longevity is distinctive of our company and the University of Findlay right down the road.

We’ve both been doing great things for 100-some years.”

There are 405 UF graduates working at MPC in areas as diverse as accounting, finance, commercial (business), operations, information technology, and environmental, health, safety, and security.

The Fortune 500 company operates the nation’s largest refining system (13 refineries in 12 states) and has longestablished core values associated with safety and environmental stewardship, integrity, inclusion, collaboration, and excellence.

Partee and his colleagues have noticed that Oiler graduates bring special qualities to the Marathon workplace that align with these corporate core values.

“UF alumni have a solid work ethic,” he pointed out. “Here in the Midwest, we go until the job is done.

That’s really important in a business that operates 24 hours a day. They also have a team orientation. They always strive for the team win versus individual outcomes, and they are collaborative.”

Partee further praised the “commitment and follow through” of UF alumni. “At Marathon, we don’t think of our roles as a job but an enduring long-term career,” he explained. “Findlay graduates are vested and here for the long term.”

An Oiler graduate himself, the executive enrolled in UF’s MBA program while he and his wife, Stephanie, had two young children, and needed a graduate school that was close.

“I learned a lot; it was rigorous and difficult. I would and have highly recommended the UF graduate programs to others,” he added.

The UF-Marathon partnership goes beyond the workplace or campus borders and extends into the community.

Partee believes the two institutions share an allegiance to contributing to a thriving community.

UF graduates bring a sense of purpose, teamwork, and pride in what they do to their workplaces – all qualities that make companies stronger and the community better. It’s a connection that continues to pay dividends well beyond the workplace.

He noted that Marathon’s community engagement strategy is centered around strengthening the region and helping to make people’s lives better – a direct overlap with an Oiler campus culture that emphasizes servant leadership.

“We are deeply embedded in the communities we serve,” he said. “We want to be good neighbors, leading by example for others, and a productive part of the community.”

Kenneth McIntyre Jr., vice president of University advancement, believes Marathon’s commitment to the community is one reason the company continues to attract Oiler talent.

“Our graduates have a deep appreciation for the city of Findlay, the University, and for

the values that make this place special,” he said. “When they see those same values reflected in a company like Marathon, it feels like a natural fit.”

He added that Marathon’s generous practice of matching the donations that their employees make to charities reflects that same spirit of loyalty and shared purpose.

“When Marathon supports the causes its employees care about, including their alma mater, it reinforces a culture of giving back and staying connected,” McIntyre said.

Partee agrees, complimenting UF’s value to the region.

“Higher education is important to our community and we’re grateful for the University of Findlay. That’s why we hire Oilers.”

It was exciting to see so many Oiler alumni and friends come home for this year’s Homecoming & Family Weekend on October 9-12.

The weekend celebration featured plenty of Orange and Black spirit at a variety of events bringing together Oilers of all ages to create new memories!

Oiler Athletics Oiler Volleyball Sweeping Through Season The Oiler volleyball team is making an impressive run this season with a record at presstime of 21-3 overall and 12-1 in G-MAC play. Senior Makenna Belcher has been named a G-MAC Athletes of the Week three times, and teammates Emma White, Hannah Miller, Grace Auer and Lauren Foerster each have received the honor once. Reaching significant milestones are White with 4,000 assists and 1,000 digs, and Miller, Belcher, and Alana Pohlman, each with 1,000 kills.

“This year’s team is special because we have so many talented athletes that each has had to take their individual ego and place it on the shelf for the good of the team,” Head Coach Wick Colchagoff said. “We are not just dependent on one or two players. Often times our practices are more competitive than some of the matches against the lower portion of our conference.”

Three Inducted into UF Hall of Fame Three former standout athletes were inducted October 10 as the 2025 class of the UF Athletic Hall of Fame. They are former men’s track and field icon Justin Welch ’15, men’s basketball standout Frank Phillips, and women’s basketball star Kayla (Brown) Golding ’13, M’14.

Welch was recognized for winning four NCAA Division II National Championships, two in the weight throw and two in hammer throw, and he holds three school records in the weight throw, hammer throw, and discus. Phillips was celebrated for leading the basketball program to four National Tournament appearances and a 102-22 record. Golding was honored as the only player in Oiler history to be voted an NCAA Division II All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association who finished her tenure with the Oilers by totaling 1,277 points, 420 rebounds, 199 steals, and 147 assists.

UF Cracks Top 10 for Learfield Cup UF finished 10th nationally out of 304 Division II schools in the 2024-25 Learfield | IMG College Directors’ Cup standings. It is the highest finish in the history of Findlay athletics, topping the previous mark of 17th which had been achieved in 2012 and 2018. Findlay scored 621.25 points and is one of just two schools in the Top 10 with an enrollment of 5,000 students or less. Points are awarded based on each school’s finish in Division II competition. Teams must make NCAA postseason play to be awarded points, and 13 Oiler teams earned trips to the NCAA postseason – the most in the history of the department.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in Findlay athletics,” Director of Athletics Jim Givens M’99 said. “Finishing in the top ten for the first time ever reflects not only the talent and commitment of our student-athletes, but also the unwavering support of our coaching staffs, athletic trainers, faculty, administration, and the entire Findlay community.”

Former Oiler golfer Mary Kelly Mulcahy ’24 is a

Top 30 Nominee for the 2025 NCAA Woman of the Year award. She was selected as a finalist from a record-breaking list of 631 nominees.

The men’s basketball team was selected as the preseason favorite in the 2025 G-MAC preseason coaches’ poll, receiving eight votes for the No. 1 ranking. The Oilers went 24-5 last season with an 17-3 record in conference play and a No. 5 national ranking.

A Trip to Remember:

Oiler Softball Takes on Italy BY JOSH EILOLA M' 24 When the University of Findlay softball team boarded their plane for Italy this summer, they weren’t just packing bats and gloves, they were carrying a dream that began four years earlier in a Florida kitchen.

During a spring tournament, head coach Danielle Lowe '06, M '08 was cooking dinner when two freshmen, full of excitement and curiosity, approached her with an idea that seemed more wishful than realistic.

“They said, ‘Coach, how would you feel about taking us abroad?’” she recalled with a laugh. “I thought they were joking. But I told them, ‘Sure, if you can figure it out.’”

To her surprise, they did.

Within weeks, the freshmen had arranged meetings with a company that organized international athletic trips.

They researched logistics, asked questions, and presented the plan to their teammates. “I told them we’d need at least 14 players and two pitchers,” Lowe said. “They came back almost immediately with enough interest to make it happen.”

Four years later, that conversation became reality.

Fifty-seven travelers – including players, coaches, parents, and

even grandparents – embarked on a nine-day Italian tour that blended softball, sightseeing, and shared memories that none will soon forget.

The Oilers’ international schedule included three games, but as with any good adventure, plans shifted along the way. When one local team in Rome unexpectedly folded, the Oilers turned the opportunity into something even more meaningful, a youth clinic. “It was incredible,” Lowe explained. “We had kids from about 7 to 18 years old show up, and some didn’t speak any English.”

Their second matchup was against a Tier 2 Italian team – competitive, but a good balance for the Oilers. Their final game, however, was a surprise.

“We arrived at this beautiful facility outside Florence,” Lowe said. “The other team was already warming up, and they looked really good. I thought, ‘We might be in trouble here.’”

She wasn’t wrong. Midway through the game, as the Italian team pulled ahead, the opposing catcher approached the Oilers’ dugout.

“She said, ‘Coach, don’t worry – we’re not trying to run up

the score. This is our national team,’” she recalled. “I said, ‘Wait – the national national team?’ She nodded.”

The Oilers laughed, regrouped, and played on proudly.

“Afterward, we all ate together.

It was such a special moment – just softball people, sharing food, laughter, and stories.”

Between games, the studentathletes immersed themselves in Italian culture, exploring some of the country’s most famous landmarks and hidden gems in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan.

They toured the Vatican and the Colosseum, shopped along Florence’s cobblestone streets, and cruised the canals of Venice in gondolas. “At one point, I looked over at one of our catchers, Megan, sitting in the gondola with me, and I said, ‘If I told you two years ago during recruiting that we’d be riding through Venice together, would you have believed me?’” Lowe said. “She just laughed and said, ‘I still don’t.’”

The highlight for many was a visit to Cinque Terre, the “five islands” along Italy’s northern coast. “You can’t drive there,” the coach explained. “You take a train along the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It was breathtaking –

probably my favorite part of the trip.”

While the trip offered incredible sights and experiences, its real value came from something deeper: connection.

“Any shared experience like that brings people together in a way nothing else can,” Lowe reflected. “We had parents, grandparents, players – all bonding, laughing, exploring.

It changed how we see each other.”

For the players, it was an education that went far beyond softball. They navigated new cultures, practiced adaptability, and represented Findlay on an international stage. “They dressed up every day, carried their gloves through airports, and played their hearts out,” she noted. “They showed what it means to be Oilers – hardworking, humble, and ready for anything.”

As the team returned home, tired but glowing from the journey, one thing was clear: this was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure – a celebration of sport, friendship, and the power of saying “yes” to a wild idea.

“Would we do it again?”

Lowe said, with a grin. “Oh, absolutely. In a heartbeat.”

In Memoriam DENNIS A. ZAHLER ’70 passed

away May 25, 2025, at the age of 76. He earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Findlay College and played on the Oiler football team for four years. In 2004, he was honored with the UF Distinguished Alumni Award. He was the owner of Zahler & Associates Insurance Co. in Fort Mitchell, Ky. with DENNIS A. ZAHLER his son, Scott Zahler ’99. Denny and his wife, Barbara (Lewis) Zahler, Ed.D., were generous supporters of the Zahler Family Scholarship and Zahler & Associates Scholarship Endowment. Denny will be remembered for his gifts of friendship, outreach, and hospitality.

TERRY R. WYMER ’82 passed away October 18, 2025 at the age of 66. He was a highly respected collegiate basketball official and a passionate entrepreneur, owning and operating TRW Cleaning Services.

Terry earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Findlay College. He was a member of Findlay’s 1979 NAIA TERRY R. WYMER National Championship football team and earned three baseball letters as the Oilers’ first baseman. Working in the Big Ten, Atlantic Coast, and Mid-American conferences, and officiating in numerous NCAA tournaments, including five Final Fours and three National Championship games, he was committed to improving the lives of others through sports. In 2015, he was inducted into the UF Hall of Fame, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Terry’s integrity, work ethic, and commitment to fairness inspired countless athletes, coaches, and fellow officials. He and his wife, Teresa, were loyal supporters of the Oilers Club, many UF athletic teams, and the Niekamp Arena project.

BETSY B. (BARRETT) PRY ’97,

a former UF Board of Trustees member, passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 82. A Findlay native, she taught elementary school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before marrying her husband Nik Pry, who started the Pry CPA and Pry Accounting and Financial Services firm in Findlay. Betsy was a founding member of the Findlay BETSY B. (BARRETT) PRY Service League. She was very involved with UF’s Mazza Museum, volunteering at many events, and sponsoring a reading library at Mazza. Betsy served as a UF Trustee from 1992 – 2001. She served on the Congressional Board appointed by the House of Representatives to nominate candidates to the U.S. military academies. In 1997, Betsy earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in children’s literature from UF. She and Nik were also supporters of the Dr. C. Richard Beckett Animal Science Building and numerous academic programs.

He oversees the strategic direction, operational excellence, and performance of key service lines, including neurosciences, orthopedics, cancer, heart, and vascular care. A native of Aiken, South Carolina, Jackson has more than 30 years of healthcare leadership experience.

He began his career in healthcare after earning an associate degree in radiologic technology from Trident Technical College. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Central Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from UF.

Enid Pickett ’71, wrote a play “Juneteenth” that was performed at New Vintage Church in Santa Rosa, California.

It was billed as “a literary journey following a black family across time and space in the United States” highlighting love of family, faith, and freedom. Pickett received a bachelor’s degree in education from Findlay College before moving to California and earning a master’s degree from Sonoma State University. An educator for many years for the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District in Rohnert Park, California, she now teaches at John Muir Charter School helping young adults to graduate. In 2024, a collection of 100 of her poems was published in a book, “Through the Eyes of Enid.”

veterinarian at Kittanning Veterinary Hospital in Kittanning, Pennsylvania.

Russ Smith MBA ’99, a longtime administrator at the University of Toledo Medical Center, was appointed chief operating officer, with primary responsibility for hospital operations and overseeing pharmacy, laboratory and radiology operations, the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center, and other ancillary services. Smith joined UTMC in 1995 as an inpatient pharmacist. He has served as pharmacy operations manager, director of pharmacy and UTMC’s chief pharmacy officer. In 2021, he was named senior hospital administrator.

Dr. Skyler Sensel ’20, DVM, is a new veterinarian at Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic in Findlay. She earned her veterinary degree from Auburn University. Her professional interests include soft tissue surgery and ultrasound.

Todd D. Norris ’91 has been selected as the new president/ CEO of Sauder Village in Archbold, Ohio. He will oversee the entire complex, including the Heritage Inn, Barn Restaurant, Doughbox Bakery, Sauder Village Campground, and Historic Sauder Village, promoting growth and sustainability for the living history museum. He previously held leadership positions at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Makenna Hurley ’24 was sworn in by Mayor Christina Muryn ’14 in August as a new police officer for the City of Findlay. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UF. She is attending the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy at Owens Community College to earn her Ohio Peace Officer Certification.

Jordan Taylor ’25 was appointed

to the track and field coaching staff at Bemidji State University.

She will work as the sprints and hurdles coach during the 2025-26 season. She spent the past five years as a sprinter on the UF team and assisted the Oiler coaching staff. Jordan is an All-American in relays and the 200m dash. She was a national qualifier in both outdoor and indoor relays and the outdoor 200m dash for two seasons.

Stu Shear ’71 hosts a YouTube show via the TRIM Radio Network “My World: Live, Laff, Whatever” discussing a variety of topics and sharing his perspective on the world, including pets, finances, and UF. “I believe the University of Findlay provides its students with an excellent educational experience,” he said. His show also is featured on Rumble and Spotify.

Heather (Hasch) Shininger ’00 M ‘02, second from left, shared that this was the inaugural Physical Therapy class to attend all six years at UF and graduate with their master’s degrees.
