Welcome to the University of Exeter! Here at the Athletic Union (AU), we are responsible for providing you with the best sporting experiences whilst you complete your degree. We pride ourselves on catering for people of all abilities. Some of our high performance athletes compete at international level whilst all our clubs also offer training for beginners in their sports. Exeter has a renowned sporting reputation and finished with a grand total of 3,048 points last year, our highest ever points total! This saw us finish 6th in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport). As an AU we have a real ambition to continue to build on this success and to routinely finish towards the top of the BUCS league. Our focus isn’t solely on competition though and with just over 7,200 members, we cater for all levels of sport within our 50 clubs as well as through our intramural programme. Our Experience Sport participation project, funded by Sport England, also makes the most of the great sporting opportunities provided by the natural surroundings, some of the best in England!
Jack Bristow AU president
This booklet contains all the information you will need to join a club as well as the relevant student club captain’s emails so you can ask any questions you may have. Look out on the iExeter App or on the Guild Website for the timetable of taster sessions during Freshers’ Week as this is the ideal time to try something new and see what sport at Exeter is all about! Sport is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your university experience. The broad range of activities, sports and opportunities to volunteer and participate is huge and with so much on offer there’s something for everyone. If you need anything get in touch with my contact details below and I look forward to meeting you in the coming year.

University of Exeter American Football Club Do you want to try a fast paced, hard hitting and exciting new sport? American football has become extremely popular at university level, with over 60 teams competing in the National League. The Exeter Demons quickly established themselves as a National play-off contender, reaching the play-offs twice since the club’s inception in 2009, in a sport which has playing positions to suit all skill sets and all individuals, making it a sport for everyone. The club combines three padded training sessions a week with use of the High Performance gym to create a team that regularly pushes the best teams in the League to the title. It doesn’t matter if you have never played before, as our qualified coaching staff will have you padded up and making big plays in no time! The club also prides itself on being friendly and welcoming, having a great social atmosphere with its members regularly meeting up off the football field for socials or to watch NFL matches at our sponsors sports bar. Similarly the club offers other opportunities to get involved with sport at university in general, regularly competing in intramural sports such as football and dodgeball. If you want a social and friendly club that is one of the most successful at the university then why not try an exciting new sport? Look out for our fresher’s taster sessions on the crumb; we hope to see you there!

Archery is a very accessible and diverse sport, with a strong emphasis on personal achievement and improvement whatever your level of skill. The EUAC is a friendly, relaxed club and we welcome new members with or without any prior experience of archery. We run a beginners’ course during the first six weeks of term that equips new members with the skills and safety knowledge to start shooting at club training sessions. You can come along to shoot just for relaxation after a hard day at university with your friends, or, if you are interested in shooting competitively, we shall support you in your development and coaching leading up to many local and national competitions held regularly throughout the year.

Joining the University of Exeter Athletics club is a guaranteed way of getting fit and making some of the best friends you will have during your time at university. With opportunities ranging from running socially to competing against international athletes at British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships, EUAC offers something to those who have an interest in developing themselves and maximising their athletic and social potential. We welcome and cater for all abilities and athletics events.

University of Exeter Men’s Basketball Club It’s an exciting time to be involved with the University of Exeter Men’s Basketball Club. The appointment of an ambitious new head coach will see the 1st team striving to win their British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league this season. Over the last several years our 2nd and 3rd teams have performed consistently at a high level in the Exeter and District Basketball Association, a competitive local league competition. The club also runs a successful intramural league, where players of all abilities have the opportunity to play, develop and become part of the club. EUMBC are not just about winning trophies, we also focus on creating a friendly, welcoming and supportive atmosphere across the whole club. Everyone, whatever their team or ability is welcome to club events, socials and meals which typically occur once a week during the season. We pride ourselves not just by what we achieve on the court, but also what we do off it.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The University of Exeter Amateur Boxing Club (EUABC) is one of Exeter’s fastest developing sports clubs in the university at the moment. We welcome all abilities, whether male or female, and encourage complete beginners to lace up the gloves and take part in the sport of boxing. It is an exciting time for the club, having won gold medals in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) annual boxing championships for the second year running as well as three silvers in 2015. The Club trains four times a week and also offers free membership to the local boxing gym which trains a further two times a week. Socials are held bi-weekly, offering everyone a chance to interact and get to know each other in a fun environment outside of training. We cater towards any goal – from fitness to competition, all are welcome and you can train as often or as little as you wish. We have a range of levels, encouraging everyone to get competitive or simply keep fit and have fun.

Exeter University Canoe Club (EUCC) is the perfect club for anyone wanting to try something new, develop existing skills, or explore all that the South West has to offer. Exeter has access to some of the best white-water and surf in the country and we make the most of this through weekly trips. After weekends away to Wales and elsewhere, we finish the year with our much anticipated Alps trip. If you’ve got a competitive side, our canoe polo team trains and competes regularly and we are currently developing flat water racing as well as always looking for new ways to get involved in competition. Members enjoy the use of all necessary equipment and can take advantage of expertise and training at hand. If you are keen to advance we offer discounted qualifications and plenty of opportunities to hone your skills. On top of all this, we have regular socials, ranging from themed nights out to quiet nights in. Come to a taster session and give it a go!
If you’re looking for a friendly environment to practice the best sport in the world, then the University of Exeter’s Women’s Basketball Club is the place for you. We pride ourselves in pushing players to perform to the best of their abilities. The 3 teams - 1st, 2nd and the development team - guarantee room for development and improvement of fundamental skills for everybody at any level. Therefore no prior knowledge of basketball is needed; everyone can join! With the welcoming spirits and friendly environment that the girls create, we ensure tons of laughs and support from teammates both on and off the court. By joining the team and attending our many socials, you are sure to become friends with very warm, interesting, and dedicated individuals. So what are you waiting for?

However, there is also the opportunity for all members to perform without auditions, for example at Exeter City Football Club games and other external events such as the London Marathon and Exeter Great West Run. With a selection of multiple squads there is something for everyone, and there are no restrictions on how many squads you can audition for. Although the Cheer Competition squad is specifically all-girl, we strongly encourage boys to audition for Stunt squads, and the Gymnastics team is entirely co-ed.

University of Exeter Fencing Club The University of Exeter Fencing Club aims to cater for all abilities, from beginners and casual fencers, to more competitive fencers. We are a growing club that has seen a lot of development over the last year, with great results in BUCS and domestic competitions, as well as the Women’s Team being promoted to the BUCS National Premier South. A large part of this has been down to our new coaching team, which consists of Edgar Kursiss, a former Latvian National Foil Champion, and Gyorgy Felletar, a level 5 Hungarian coach in all 3 weapons with international experience. He has been to 3 Olympic Games, either as a coach or a referee. We provide all of the equipment for those who are new to the sport, and hold a beginners competition in Term 2 for novices to test their skills and to get a taste for competitive fencing. For more experienced fencers, we organise trips to several domestic competitions each year, such as the Welsh Open. The club also has a great social side, providing a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all members and a chance to make great friends. There really is something for everyone, so come along and give fencing a try!

University of Exeter Men’s Hockey Club The University of Exeter Men’s Hockey Club (EUMHC) has long been an integral aspect of the University, and is currently one of Exeter’s High Performance Clubs. Receiving significant backing from the AU in both funding and high-quality facilities, whilst also boasting six top-level teams, the Club is one of the most successful on Campus. Furthermore, EUMHC has consistently the most sort-after social calendar year after year. Notorious for regularly organising mixed socials with women’s hockey and netball, EUMHC also brags an assortment of all-day events. With the summer Timepiece boat party, the nationally renowned ‘Edinburgh Fives’ and an infamous End of Season Dinner, few sports clubs can compete. Finally, our Intramural programme enables students to play mixed hockey in an extremely social and enjoyable environment, whilst also being coached by a member of the England U21 squad. With matches running every Sunday evening, Intramural is ideal for taking time out from your academic routine.

University of Exeter Jiu Jitsu Club Jiu Jitsu is a self-defence based martial art originating from Japan. It covers a wide range of skills, from throws and joint locks, to more competition focused elements such as freestyle Randori and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As the largest martial arts club on campus, the University of Exeter Jiu Jitsu club offers a high standard of training in a safe and supportive environment. We are part of the Seishin Mizu Ryu Tatakai Jutsu style, founded by sixth Dan Dr Richard Catterick, who is based here in Exeter. We train twice a week at the university, but many members take part in further training at Dr Catterick’s Dojo, which is just a short walk from campus. Jiu Jitsu is a progressive sport, working to increase ability and fitness over time, so welcomes beginners and old hands alike. We are running taster sessions and demo’s throughout fresher’s week and the first full training session is free, so please come along and find out what we’re all about.

University is all about trying new things, so why not give Korfball a try! We welcome all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced players. Although, Korfball is great fun regardless of experience and the game is very easy to pick up. Korfball is a Dutch version of Basketball, but has similarities to both English Netball and Basketball. It is a mixed non-contact sport with four guys and four girls on each team, alternating between attack and defence. The ultimate aim is to get the ball in the hoop! The University of Exeter Korfball club welcomes everyone since our training sessions accommodate those who are keen to play casually or competitively and is a great way to keep fit! We are an enthusiastic sports club and a relaxed and friendly bunch; we also love a great social! Anyone can come to one of our taster sessions during Fresher’s week and give Korfball a go or turn up to one of our training sessions throughout the year! So be sure to make the most of life at University of Exeter and try something new this year!

One of the most popular and well-known martial arts, karate is a system of self-defence originating from Japan. Our sessions are led by the highest ranked Dan grade in the South West, Sensei Trevor Jarett (5th Dan). With his guidance and instruction, members can advance through the ranks with termly gradings and train towards national competitions, in which the club has already enjoyed much success. Karate classes at the University have plenty to offer for complete beginners, as well as experienced students. It is a fun way to make friends and keep fit.

Complete beginners and experienced students are welcome to enjoy karate’s fitness and our various socials give members more opportunity to meet new people and make karate one of the best parts of your student life.
Exeter Lacrosse Club is not only the largest lacrosse club in the UK but it also boasts one of the most committed and talented playing sides in the country. The club contains five competitive BUCS teams with a further three teams either playing in regional leagues or tournament leagues. There is a fantastic level of coaching throughout the whole club, no matter whether your previous experience is at an international level or whether you first pick up a stick in fresher’s week. For those who have never played lacrosse before, there are weekly training sessions with experienced players with international level experience and the potential to take part in national tournaments, University fixtures and our very own inter-mural mixed league throughout the year.

University of Exeter Polo Club The University of Exeter Polo Club has been the most successful university polo club at both the winter and summer nationals for the last three years. Among us we have an array of talent, from extremely well handicapped players to those who have never ridden before they joined the club. This means we can organise many varsities throughout the winter and summer season for all teams, from beginners to open, with a fantastic social scene to accompany them. Weekly training, regular fixtures and university league matches are provided at Druids Lodge Polo Club with internationally approved HPA coaches who have represented England. There is also the opportunity to travel around the country competing against the top university teams and representing Exeter at the SUPA nationals. Our annual tour, this year to Plettenburg Bay - South Africa, is outstanding; we compete in local tournaments, experience world class coaching and have the trip of a lifetime with our friends.

The University of Exeter Women’s Rugby Club (EUWRFC) is one of the most successful clubs at Exeter winning the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championship in XV’s in 2013 and the BUCS championship in 7s in 2012 and 2014. We also reached the semi-finals in the XV’s championship in 2014 and 2015, and gained a bronze medal in the 7s championship this year. As a result of our multiple achievements, EUWRFC is part of the University’s High Performance Programme, which gives members the opportunity to have two strength and conditioning sessions a week, as well as access to physiotherapy. This year, alongside our success on the pitch, we managed to field two squads allowing players of all abilities the opportunity to develop their skills and get experience of the game, on a weekly basis. With the help of some expert coaching (Jo Yapp, a retired England International Captain) we strive to get the best out of everyone in the club and hope they enjoy the process. We are a team who are there to have fun and socialise with one another, as much as we are there to play rugby. We pride ourselves on our inviting and friendly spirit, and our strong belief in unity as a team, values that haven’t changed with increasing numbers. So, whether you have never touched a rugby ball before, or whether you have been playing since you were 7 years old, you will find your place at EUWRFC and meet some amazing people along the way.

University of Exeter Rugby League Club
University of Exeter Men’s Rugby Union Club
The University of Exeter Rugby League Club (EURL) is a successful, welcoming, ambitious and rewarding club. Over the last few seasons the club has enjoyed success for both the 1st and 2nd XIII with both teams playing in their highest league possible. The first team, having gone unbeaten in winning the South West 1A League in 2013/14, now compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Premier South League finishing 3rd and successfully reaching the BUCS quarter finals last season, a result we are looking to improve on this year. Just in this last year, three players, helped by weekly SandC sessions of the same standard offered by Super League clubs, have gained recognition from National League One clubs in addition to another player returning from having spent a year playing professionally at Tolouse Olympique. EURL is for any player, of any ability, whether you want a new challenge, develop your skills or just play casually, EURL welcomes all and we look forward to meeting you.
Exeter University Rugby Club is the one and only quintessential club for rugby union. We have a wide variety of teams and can offer rugby for every player regardless of experience previously. We can help complete beginners become part of the club, as well as offering high end performance aspects to the more experienced. We are one of the largest single sex club in the athletic union, but can still offer an individual and personalised experience to all members. Through extensive backing from the athletic union we can offer support and benefits unlike any other club. This year we are proud to say that we won club of the year, we have had players playing in the Premiership for Exeter Chiefs and have had great success in our respective BUCS leagues. These are merely a handful of reasons as to why you should join the Rugby Club.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never sailed before, you sailed once when you were younger and kind of liked it or you’re on the water at every possible moment, Exeter University Sailing Club (EUSC) has something for you. At the highest level, we participate in BUCS Fleet Racing, Team Racing, Yachting and Match Racing so if you’re a keen sailor, there’s a chance to compete nationally. We have four team racing teams and a weekly internal Fleet Racing League both of which are open to sailors of all abilities from beginner to advanced. If you’ve never been on the water, or you used to when you were younger but now you’ve drifted away, we have weekly RYA sessions which will help you to hone your skills and, once a term, you will be able to gain a hugely discounted RYA Qualification.
Do you like Skiing, Snowboarding or Snow? Yes?! Then you’ll love Snowsports! Snowsports is the largest AU club on campus and has something to offer anyone who is interested in anything snow related; whether it be skiing, snowboarding or just meeting friendly, outgoing, likeminded people. We welcome people of all abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned pros! So if you’re looking to slalom, go upside for our race and freestyle teams, or simply learn how to put on a pair of skis then the Snowports club is for you. We have so much more to offer as well! We have possibly the most exciting social calendar of any other club at the University, countless Snowdome and dry-slope trips and two massive trips to the Alps taking hundreds of students for some of the cheapest skiing and best partying the mountains can provide!
On the social side of things we’ll be running a number of ‘Club Days’ which will involve chilled sailing and BBQ’s in the sun. For those who prefer the social side to the water, we host fortnightly socials with a variety of great themes. We also arrange one-off socials such as the Club Go-Karting Day and our two formal events: Christmas Dinner and the End of Season Dinner. If you’re looking for a club with great social opportunities, incredibly cheap qualifications and unlimited access to sailing, then EUSC is the club for you.

No other sport can boast the wide variety of challenges and thrills that caving offers. Experience all aspects of this adrenaline filled pursuit and navigate the cave systems of the UK by abseiling waterfalls, climbing boulders, traversing gorges, squeezing through crevasses, swimming underground lakes, ascending potholes and crawling through stream passages. All this and more, while getting muddier than you ever thought possible, with only a head torch to illuminate your way. We do it for the rare opportunity to marvel at the wondrous natural geological masterpieces that have remained hidden in the darkness, frozen in time, and reserved only for the intrepid few who dare to seek them out. With training, insurance and all equipment provided as part of your membership fee, as well as a free beginners’ caving session, there is really no better time to find your inner spirit of adventure and begin your underground journey of exploration with the University of Exeter Speleology (Caving) Club.
University of Exeter Snooker and Pool Club offer the opportunity to enjoy both sports, whether you’re a complete novice or an experienced cueist. With flexible training, and internal leagues for both Snooker and 8-Ball English Pool, we cater from those who just fancy the occasional frame to those with a competitive edge. In second term there is the opportunity to compete for Exeter at BUCS Snooker and Pool Championships. The club has an excellent reputation, having won both competitions in 2014, and recently had several members receive England call-ups.

University of Exeter Surf Club The University of Exeter Surf Club shares the same philosophy as the South Africans when it comes to surfing: we like to surf all together! With our regular day and weekend trips to North Devon and Cornwall, as well as our abroad trips, there is the opportunity to score great waves with new friends you have made in the club. On top of our trips, we also have some of the best socials, with the whole club getting involved. The club welcomes all surfing abilities – we provide lessons and boards to people who have yet to stand up and, for the more advanced surfers, there is the chance to compete against other universities in BUCS competitions. This year we will also be running lifeguard courses, providing members with a platform to lifeguard or surf instruct in the summer.

University of Exeter Touch Rugby Club Touch is the fastest growing sport nationally and is catching on quickly at university level. It’s a fast, evasion based sport that is welcoming to all abilities, whether you’ve played rugby all your life, or you’re brand new to the game. Touch is one of few global sports that is played on a mixed platform at the elite level, something we at EUTRC use as one of our core principles. We placed 3rd in this year’s University Touch Nationals with our 2nd team coming second in the plate. We have regularly taken 5-6 teams to away tournaments around the country. In addition we have entered females only teams into tournaments, such as Spring Chick which is the largest female-only touch event in the northern hemisphere. Couple this with a stand out social scene on and off the pitch, EUTRC provides students of all abilities the opportunity to challenge themselves in a unique and friendly environment.

University of Exeter Triathlon Club We are a friendly club that offers a versatile training programme in the three disciplines of Triathlon, swimming, cycling and running – and we are proud to cater to both seasoned racers and newcomers alike. We have at least 5 training sessions a week (2 swimming, one Spin session, one Track session and one Group cycle) which vary from base training in the winter months to race and sprint preparation in the summer season – allowing our athletes to reach their full potentials at their meets. Whilst we concentrate as a team on the 3 BUCs races we compete in each academic year, the Duathlon in November, the Sprint Triathlon in May and the Standard Distance in June, we encourage our members to get involved in all types of competition, from local meets to more prestigious races such as the London ITU. Furthermore, when we’re not training, we pride ourselves on our welcoming socials and the support we offer to our teammates on and off the course. With three sports combined at an economical price, Triathlon is a great way to keep fit, meet new people and of course, compete in exhilarating races. We’d love you to contact us to find out more!

Naomi, Graduate Trainee “Choosing a graduate programme, I wanted to join an employer that’s genuinely people focused. KPMG was the obvious choice. Here I get access to every opportunity to achieve my full potential and help others achieve theirs. It’s the best of both worlds. I was encouraged to enter a competition to use everything I’ve learnt to help people outside of the business as well. My team won! The prize was to put our ideas into practice. So, I went to Tanzania to work with a charity to empower young people to make a difference to their communities. It was challenging, but I had the support of my team in the UK. I don’t think I could find these opportunities, responsibilities or support anywhere else.” Visit kpmgcareers.co.uk to find out more about careers for undergraduates and graduates from all degree disciplines in Audit, Tax, Advisory, Technology, Marketing and HR. © 2015 KPMG LLP, a UK limited liability partnership and a member firm of the KPMG network of independent member firms affiliated with KPMG International Cooperative (“KPMG International”), a Swiss entity.
