ENGINEERING FACILITIES

Our engineering teaching facilities recently underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment including the re-equipment of student workshops and the development of a state-of-the-art 3D visualisation and rapid prototyping suite.

The aerodynamics laboratory comprises wind tunnels with computerised lift/ drag balance and hot-wire anemometry equipment for velocity measurement, with the fluids laboratory offering facilities for the testing of marine renewable energy generation devices.

Our thermodynamics and energy laboratory contains thermodynamics experiments, a computerised engine test bed and renewable energy experiments.

The structures laboratory facilitates the testing of full-size structural elements.

Students can also investigate the structural properties of elements using fullycomputerised equipment including TQ Modular Structures rigs. The Vibration Engineering Section’s vibration platform, installed in 2014, allows the measurement and modelling of vibration performance in

structures such as bridges, office floors and stadia. Adjacent is the materials laboratory, housing an array of tensile test equipment.

We also have a wide range of equipment for materials engineering and manufacturing, including 3D printing and nanofabrication.

We are home to the Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing, the Centre for Alternative and Remanufacturing Technologies and the Centre for Graphene Science, from where we conduct research and work with industry on a consultancy and facility provision basis. We also have access to the University’s EPSRC-funded IMB Supercomputer SP3 system, and to a Beowulf parallel computing cluster.

Students additionally benefit from 24 hour access to the Forum Library, part of the University’s £48 million centrepiece development the Forum, opened in 2012

by Her Majesty the Queen.

This programme is aimed at those who want to work in supply chain engineering, management and logistics. It provides the essentials of management theory and practice, whilst increasing the depth and scope of your technical engineering knowledge.

The programme focuses on the supply chain in its entirety, how to construct it, set up operations, manage the input, control operations, and distribute the end product. It opens up the key issues of supply chain management and introduces you to the modern approaches to doing business in this context, teaching you to evaluate, manage and enhance the supply network.

You will be taught jointly by the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences and the Business School and will study alongside students from all around the world, who have come to Exeter from a diverse range of business and engineering backgrounds.

Successful completion of the programme will equip gradates with a range of skills applicable to many areas, most notably manufacturing and service companies, particularly for roles with responsibility for the supply chain, purchasing, logistics, procurement, materials and engineering management.

These programmes will equip you with the skills required to be a modern mechanical engineer. They focus on the latest techniques and technologies used in mechanical engineering, teaching you how to apply these to complex contemporary problems.

You will gain a range of computational skills which will enable you to analyse systems using numerical methods, simulation and optimisation techniques.

Sustainability is also emphasised throughout the programme and you will be encouraged to consider responsible solutions to modern day challenges.

The programmes are supported by internationally leading research projects in areas such as nano-scale materials engineering, biomedical engineering, 3D analysis from CT scans for prosthetic bone replacement surgery, additive layer manufacturing for high specification applications with aerospace metals, and application and recycling of polymers and composites.

These programmes bring together the latest developments in materials science and their application into new technology, providing you with specialist knowledge and skills which will enhance your engineering career.

They focus on the theory and computational simulation of material structures for application into automotive, aerospace, technology and energy sectors. You will gain a strong understanding of the properties and behaviours of different substances, from raw materials to finished products, identifying their strengths and limitations, enabling you to find solutions to complex contemporary problems.

Our particular research strengths are drawn into the programmes, in areas including functional materials (those with extra functionality such as electro-magnetic screening, self-sensing and active materials, and materials with negative thermal expansion and Poisson’s ratios), polymers, composites and biomaterials.

The programmes will prepare you for an exciting and rewarding career, whether you have a desire to lead and manage teams, or wish to progress in a technical engineering role.

Today, structural engineering is more than just design. Expert consultants are needed globally with a complete skillset; the ability to design, manage and maintain structures, but also to enable existing civil infrastructure to operate under changing loading and environments.

These programmes will provide you with a solid understanding of the whole process of structural design, analysis and operation. You will discover how to design and manage the dynamic behaviour of structures using state of the art hardware and software for performance assessment, measurement, and instrumentation to withstand normal and extreme operational loads.

Safe and efficient design of these excavations is essential for optimisation and economic utilisation of underground space.

Structural Design

A good knowledge of the philosophies and techniques of structural design and analysis are essential elements of the training of civil engineers. In this module you will learn about these philosophies, methodologies and techniques, and their application to the design of steel, reinforced concrete, and pre-stressed concrete structures.

You will learn about factors such as elasticity, cracking, tensile strength, shear and flexure, through observation and analysis. You will complete two design projects, one in steel, one in concrete, and will get the chance to carry out calculations, sketch and exercise critical judgements.
