DID YOU KNOW…

‌ THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON IS A CHARITY? As a university, we manage our finances carefully, especially in light of the changes to the funding of higher education. It is important to us to do all we can to help our students reach their full potential, providing the support they need to succeed. We want to make it possible for more people to have an enriching educational experience. One that is open to everyone and recognises that students do not all come from equal financial backgrounds. One that gives all people access to a first-rate education. Did you know you can help support more people to have equal access to education?

TOGETHER LET’S HELP MORE STUDENTS GET THE MOST OUT OF UNIVERSITY Given the changes to the funding of higher education, we are working hard to make sure university remains a choice that is open to everyone. With your support, we can make it possible for more students – especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds – to come to university and maximise their opportunities while they are here. There are a number of ways we are doing this. Our hardship fund is a vital lifeline for some students who might otherwise have to give up their courses due to financial pressures and the impact these can have on their studies and wellbeing. We also offer a wide variety of scholarships, grants and prizes that make our university more accessible, recognise outstanding achievement and motivate students to reach their full potential. All of these initiatives rely on donations from our former students (alumni) and friends.

A CHANCE TO GIVE BACK We’re asking you, as a valued member of our alumni and friends’ community, to give back by supporting your university and the next generation of students. Your donation can make a huge difference – for the student from a deprived background deciding to make the leap, for the mature student who wishes to change their life, and for many others who encounter financial challenges.

WHAT STUDENTS WHO HAVE BENEFITED SAY ‌

The University of Brighton supported me during my postgraduate degree when my mother lost her battle with cancer. Through the incredible support of the university, I was able to continue my studies and achieve my goal.

I am so very grateful. I would be unable to attend a university if it were not in Hastings. My son is four and I need to be close. I grew up in the care system and could never have imagined this possibility. For all the previous reasons, this course is changing my life.

Student, Software Engineering Student, Applied Social Science

I actually cried when I received the congratulations letter. Thank you very much. It is such a kind thing to do. I have never in my life won an award. My children will benefit dearly too. Many thanks. Student, Applied Social Science

I would just like to pass on my sincerest of thanks to everyone from the University of Brighton for awarding me this incredibly generous and kind scholarship. I was completely lost for words when I opened the letter informing me of this. I enjoy the course that I do and this gives me the impetus to work hard. For this to be recognised is truly humbling. Student, Arts and Humanities

Thank you so much for making my award possible, you are all generous and amazing. It was so heart-warming to know that somewhere people realised that my life has been very difficult and that I deserve this opportunity at university. I am going to grab this opportunity with both hands and I know that when I succeed your help has made the biggest difference. Student, Computer Systems

WHAT OUR GENEROUS ALUMNI AND FRIENDS SAY …

I came to the University of Brighton as a mature student not knowing what to expect. What I found was the freedom to explore, for myself, a world of new ideas and a dedication from the academic staff to academic study that igtnited in me a continuing desire to learn. I left the richer for my experience and supporting the university is one way of saying thank you. Gillian Graham (Social Science BA(Hons) 2006– 2009 and Humanistic Therapeutic Counselling PGDip 2011–2013)

The work undertaken with this money makes magic happen. Personally speaking, I have seen students from disadvantaged backgrounds being given financial help to give them an extra boost. But it does more than just money alone, it affirms to that student that they are worth their place at university, they are respected learners and they are valued as people. Marylynn Fyvie-Gauld (Principal Lecturer, University of Brighton)

Knowing just how stretched government funding is to all universities at present, I want to do what I can to ensure that student and staff facilities are not reduced. Fred Maillardet (Professor Emeritus)

I gained a lot from my degree, which I got when higher education was supported by grants and tuition was paid for by taxes. Times are different now and I wish that other people – and society in turn – are still able to benefit. Colin Fenn (Civil Engineering BSc(Hons) 1980–84)

I hate the idea that anyone capable of benefiting from a university education should be prevented for financial reasons. So I hope that my contribution helps towards making this wonderful experience possible for someone else. Maggie Deacon (Business Research PGDip 2002)
