“In 2021, ‘University Girls’ are a little all-over-the- place, but in the best way.” - Chloe Hechter

W

hat do University Girls really look like in 2021?

Well, they certainly aren’t twirling a phone cord around their fingers, falling back sheepishly onto a perfectly made bed, doing a facemask, and falling asleep at a healthy 9:30 p.m. With this issue, I hope to encourage other UGirls to accept the reality that, in college, you’re never just one thing. You’re never just having the best years of your life or just stressed with schoolwork or just hungover or just crying because your favorite frat boy didn’t take you to date night. I chose the theme “This is Our Youth” to illustrate the glorious mess that is this time, from the growing pains to the all-nighters to the shamelessly eating a whole cake in a leather bodysuit at 4 a.m. The division of the magazine into three major sections highlights the plurality of college students. The opening section, “New York or Nowhere,” demonstrates the resurgence of life in the city for a semi-post-COVID world. The opening article, NYC Belongs to Its Youth, (14) brings this rejuvenation to life and reassures readers that post-grad NYC life is not only attainable, but an exciting opportunity. To follow is our “Retro Rewind” section, which pays homage to the revival of vintage and retro fashion. In TikTok Versus the Trend Cycle: How Social Media Became a Fashion Catalyst (30-31), we touch on the microtrend cycle and influence of social media in the fashion world. We’re also taken back in time for the evolution of Going Out Looks Through the Decades (26-27), because once upon a time, little black crop tops and Amazon corsets weren’t everything. Our final section, “Live from Livingston,” is not about Livingston, New Jersey, however, a camp-y play on college party culture. How to be the Life of the Party (40-41) reacquaints us with the vibrant and inherently chaotic party scene after a year-long hiatus. 4 UGIRL

With this idea of how to enter the room confidently, we continue with Making the Most of Your 20’s in the 20’s (43) which teaches us how to romanticize our lives and do the impossible: avoid overanalysis. The magazine ends with an all-too-important Hot Girls Have Stomach Issues (46) and an ongoing UGirl tradition: Hook Ups from Hell (47). This issue embodies the individual and unique personalities of each writer, as well as the students at Syracuse University as a whole. A University Girl can be vulnerable, hot, have stomach issues, rock bellbottoms, eat pizza, have a hook-up from the depths of hell, be a good friend, and wake up the next morning ready to take on the world. In 2021, “University Girls” are a little allover-the-place, but in the best way. They’re overachieving rock stars, but have the occasional breakdown. They know that this is the time to figure out who you really are, who your friends really are, and who you want to spend your life becoming. It’s a time to know that it’s okay if you don’t know that yet. Being a part of University Girl has been, without question, the highlight of my time here at SU. Leading a team of such inspiring and hard-working women puts a smile on my face every day. First and foremost, I’d like to thank Ainsley Holman for acting as not only a mentor, but as a friend and confidante who saw something in me when I joined University Girl over Zoom as a scared little freshman. I’d also like to extend my gratitude to Orli Rein, Sammy Fuss, Rhea Shrivastava, Jane Shevlin, Layla Harrison, Katie Hill, Britney Kirwan, Amanda Rosenthal, Jennie Bull, Mia Gelb, Aviya Garg, Ali Dimova, Caroline Cahill, Katie Zager, and Phoebe Block. Through every photoshoot, rewrite, and hasty phone call, leading this team has been an absolute dream, and the “This is Our Youth” issue would have been impossible without every single one of you. Xoxo, Chloe Hechter Editor-in-Chief

uizquizqu what’s your type?

NYC Belongs To Its Youth A creative rebirth once more... by JULIA SHORT

B

efore COVID-19 hit the streets of New York City, there was never a single quiet block, never a dull moment; the city truly never slept. The streets were lit up, and not just with the light shining from oncoming cabs, street lights, and billboards, but with people. COVID-19 hit the city early on in the pandemic, and the streets that once never slept turned into desolate blocks without a purpose. New York had almost lost its only form of life. Many people moved out of the city to avoid getting sick, and others moved because they were no longer able to afford rent for their apartments and businesses. New York City was dying. But never fear; ever since May 2021, slowly but surely, life has returned to the streets of the city, back and bigger than ever. 20-somethings staying out until 4am, dancing, drinking, and kissing strangers became the norm once more, with NYC taking the same (but different) form of life. Now, New York belongs to its youth. If you’ve missed out on your last teenage years into your early 20s, the energy going into this year was definitely at an all time high. Now that we’re vaccinated and are most definitely in the hottest years of our lives (c’mon… hot girls get vaccinated), we’re ready to hit the streets of New York in only the sexy-yet-classiest short dresses and low cut shirts.

14 UGIRL

graphics by ALI DIMOVA

Walking through the streets of New York at the prime time of 1:30am, the streets are bustling and full of life. Smoking marijuana on street corners, fashion trends at an all time high, and restrictions beginning to lift throughout the year have all truly paved the way for the nightlife to thrive. Clubs and bars are back to what they once were: a plethora of eager youth wanting to find something more than what life has handed them thus far. Not only were the regular nightlife scenes coming back to life, out of the dust came so-called “underground” parties that popped up throughout the city. These parties were designed for those who didn’t want to attend the mainstream parties and events hosted throughout NYC, but rather made for those who wanted something different. Similar to the different types of “normal” people were forced to live post-pandemic. As a member of Gen-Z and the up and coming 20-somethings in New York, losing out on my early 20s is, to put it quite plainly, a DISASTER. Losing more than a year of my young adulthood and basically watching it crumble before me? Not what I would have expected. And this is exactly why this year has shaped up to be the most anticipated for our generation. Not only because of the growing social scene, but a creative rebirth in a city formerly run by the wealthy elite and its older generation.

The growing social scene has been a major change for everyone, and the so-called “Summer of Love” (as stated by the New York Times) went into full effect this year. With restrictions being lifted and everyone starting to be a bit more lax about who they see, making out and hooking up with strangers is 100% a must. Parks, benches, street corners, clubs, bars, and intersections are just a few of the many locations I have seen people making out… and absolutely holding nothing back. Everyone has been depressed and touch-starved due to the universal lack of physical touch in the last year, so much so that everyone wants in on some of the action. Even walks of shame at 9am have made a comeback once again (absolutely NO shame in this). Thinking back on the past year and the hell it gave all of us, we have to remember that after tragedies, there is always a rebirth. The culture shocks that electrified all of us this past year have made me realize that this is how society needs to grow again and get back to what it once was. Even though New York has become a different type of normal once more. As a New York native that is frequently involved in its social scene, seeing the city come back to life in a brand new light has been nothing short of a miracle. Making up for lost time will take a while, but it’s extremely reassuring as we wait for what comes next.

The Shift Celebrities to Influencers in NYC The ShiftFrom From Celebrities to Influencers in NYC

who runs nyc? tik tok influencers. by CAROLINE STEVENSON

graphics by SAMANTHA FUSS

Victoria Paris, Remi Bader, Josie Jabs — even if you don’t follow them on social media, you’ve probably heard one of these names. These ladies are just a few of the many New York City influencers who have dominated our Tik Tok For You pages and Instagram feeds. Yet, how exactly did simple 15 to 60-second videos lead to these ladies walking the same red carpets as Kylie Jenner and Megan Fox? It’s simple: these influencers emphasize REAL living and can’t hide behind Photoshop. Instead, they choose to embrace the candid reality of their lives. Whether it’s showing off their outfits or running around New York City, we can relate to them. While it’s fun to look at pictures of Hollywood stars making everyday life look glamorous — seriously, we didn’t even know it was possible to make grocery shopping look good — or photos of celebrities going to upscale events while traveling the world, honestly, we just can’t relate. Over the years, the disparity between Hollywood icons and ordinary life has only heightened. Not only have we become obsessed with watching the day-to-day lives of our favorite celebrities on social media, but we have also watched ridiculous amounts of editing become the norm for Instagram posts. Seeing picture after picture of slim waists, smooth skin, and perfect butts have become a typical experience while scrolling through social media, making many girls look in the mirror and hate what they see. While social media quickly became interchangeable with words like “toxic” and “destructive,” a wave of relatable influencers brought a much-needed dose of reality to our screens. Our feeds were flooded with Victoria Paris’s 20+ vlogs a day that documented her very real life in New York, from fit checks to

morning coffee, and even wheeling her dirty laundry down the block. Or how about Remi Bader’s famous #remisrealistichauls, where she shows her first reactions to trying on clothes purchased online as a plus-size woman. Even Brianna Chicken Fry, living as a college dropout in NYC known for her painful, relatable hangovers and party-girl lifestyle. Each of these accounts provides an engaging experience and shared feeling for their audience, making them feel understood and like they’re part of a community. You can replicate an outfit similar to the ones seen on an influencer’s feed, eat at the same affordable restaurants during a city trip, and relate to the emotions that come with being a young woman in a new environment, whether that be college or post-grad life. At the same time, you can also expect to see these women as the faces of many popular brands, such as Remi Bader’s work for Revolve or Victoria Paris’s collaboration with Garage. Having women like Bader and Paris represent popular brands while living somewhat of a normal life brings back this connection that has been lost between Hollywood’s elite and the public. While you can empathize with these women in the similarities of your lifestyles, you can also look up to them and admire their work, having made a name for themselves through their vulnerability on social media. While we will always admire the Hollywood celebrities we grew up with, the new wave of true girl boss-NYC influencers shows us the highs and lows that come with popularity while allowing us to see a little bit of ourselves in them.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO NYC HOTSPOTS Your post-grad Sex and the City fantasy awaits.

by CHLOE HECHTER and CAROLINE CAHILL

S

kip Times Square, spare yourself the basic SoHo shopping spree, and save Central Park for when the family comes to visit. When you’re living your best post grad life, you’re a New York native, and natives always know what’s happening. In order to not just survive, but thrive in the city, keep these hotspots on your radar. We swear, there’s better food around than Serendipity and The Sugar Factory.

Bar Pitti

Extra truffle pasta, please! When you come to Bar Pitti, be sure to be dressed to the nines, because there’s a good chance you’ll run into New York local Timotheé Chalamet in his element. (Not to brag, but I went to high school with him). This trendy West Village Italian restaurant is the perfect place for the best pasta you’ll ever eat, a celeb sighting, or if you’re lucky, a first date.

Kind Regards

This one’s for all of our 21 and over ladies (...obviously…). Picture your classic NYC clubbing fantasy, complete with a disco ball, dark ambiance, and to-die-for cocktails. If you’re feeling like V.I.P., make sure to check out the basement where they have occasional shows. Forget about “No Hands” and “All Night Longer,” the music at Kind Regards runs circles around your frat house DJ and creates immaculate vibes. Also, we once saw the cast of the Gossip Girl reboot here.

Tompkins Square Bagels

Nothing cures a hangover quite like an authentic New York City bagel. If you think you’ve had a good bagel, you’re wrong until you’ve lived in NYC, sorry, not sorry. Head down to Tompkins Square Bagels for a fresh bagel with cream cheese and lox on a Sunday morning, rally the troops, throw on your best walk-of-shame ‘fit, and cure your hangxiety with a carbo-load.

Summit One Vanderbilt

It’s like visiting the top of the Empire State Building, only less basic. Right in the heart of Manhattan is New York’s newest Insta-worthy interactive experience. You can take a glass elevator to the top, get over your fear of heights, and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline. Just be warned, you might have to take off your precious white platform sneakers to make room for their glass-proof booties.

Isalis Boutique

Now it’s time to splurge, because you deserve it, girl! Isalis boutique is right on Price Street, and it’s probably that store you’ve been seeing all over TikTok. With everything from House of Sunny to Agolde, this super-trendy but equally tiny store will leave your bank account empty but your closet full of the hottest New York fashion.

Lucali Pizza

Right across the bridge lives Lucali Pizza in Brooklyn. Make a day of it, eat a ton of pizza, then walk it off by walking back to the city via the Brooklyn Bridge. Since it’s Beyonce’s favorite spot, you might have to wait on line, but it’ll totally be worth the wait. Make sure to bring your friends because they only sell by pie--or don’t, we don’t judge.

Cafeteria

Can’t help but wonder where the Sex and the City gals eat their iconic brunches? Look no further than Cafeteria restaurant in Chelsea. For the best brunch, dinner, and cocktails, this place is casual-meets-trendy and the perfect pre-going out dinner spot. Would recommend the Mac and Cheese spring rolls and the berry Mojito. Real city girls never gatekeep their favorite spots, so ditch your frat sneakers and your boring black crop top and put on your little heels and your sexiest slip dress; NYC is back, better, and ready for postgrad you.

What We’re Wearing in NYC Your ultimate style guide to the city that never sleeps.

I

by MAYA CAMPOS

t’s New York or nowhere. In a city that never sleeps, the fashion doesn’t either. Need outfit inspo? Take inspiration right off the streets of New York. When it comes to fashion, it truly is all about what feels right to you. There will of course be the fashion pioneers who will be bold enough to take on new trends and explore their individuality in that space and then there will be the followers who will take note from the “trend setters.” When it comes down to it, fashion is self expression, and in a city like New York, the great thing is NO ONE CARES what you wear or don’t wear. You can be your complete total self and be accepted. With that being said, we do love taking inspiration from others. Here is a snapshot of what people are wearing in the greatest city in the world right now.

Corset Tops

We all saw corset tops over the summer so it’s nothing new, but nothing can be better than an ongoing trend you wear with your favorite pair of jeans. Today, corsets still attain small design notions from their historical significance. Of course, now corsets are much more comfortable to wear and casual. We are seeing people on the streets of New York pair them with button-downs or loose-fitting jeans to cinch in and trace the shape of their figures.

Pantsuits

Ugh as if! How clueless would we have to be to not be taking notes from our style icon Cher? Pantsuits have been seen on the streets of New York as a staple. These matching sets are easy to throw on and you will still feel like a fashion forward icon.

graphics by VIVIAN YANG

Chunky Loafers

The Nineties and early 2000’s have been ruling the fashion scene for quite some time now. These are a classic pair of shoes that will essentially never go out of style because they are literally just black shoes. Prada took the forefront of this trend and kicked it off with their classic chunky loafers that we all know today, but there are many brands that have also adopted this new trend. Chunky loafers were seen all throughout New York Fashion Week street style. Alongside a pair of jeans or mini skirt or a sweater, this look has probably already popped up on your instagram.

Tailored Vests

Ditch the sleeves. Yes, we are talking about the suit vest. Although we will never let go of the oversized blazer that gives us that girl boss look, we are wearing a slight moderation. Of course, we are still girl bosses, just without the sleeves, because who needs sleeves to hold us down? Menswear-inspired pieces can be sexy and feminine, especially if you wear nothing underneath.

Leather Jackets

No item is as iconic and crucial to have in a wardrobe as a leather jacket. There cannot be enough emphasis on the fact that everyone needs a leather jacket. New York City is getting colder. As it gets colder, the statement jackets come out of hiding from the back of our summer closets. The classic leather jacket is the perfect city girl chic piece that allows you to layer down or layer up. If you’re Going out in the East Village, you can now bundle up with a leather jacket. That way you don’t have to risk hypothermia for the sake of fashion.

Funky Colorful Sweaters

Of course, a neutral knit will always be essential in your wardrobe. We have seen many designers this season and people on the streets of New York prove that the brighter the sweater the better. House Of Sunny has some iconic bright patterned print sweaters to choose from. In a city of millions, it means something to stand out. Everyone is channeling their inner Harry Styles and pulling out their chunkiest, colorful combo sweaters to bundle up as they are walking down Fifth Avenue.

Baggy Jeans

We all know skinny jeans have seen their days and hopefully will never come out from the back of our closet where we hid them. Now, we are giving our legs some room because the bigger the better. Over the past year and a half we have dressed for comfort. This makes sense why as we are stepping back out into the world we want to take some of that comfort with us. We see big jeans styled in a variety of chic ways with a pair of Zara strappy heels or your classic Nike Air Forces. It is now all about big jean energy! Fashion is all about being a fun way to express yourself. You can pick and choose what trends match your personal style and wardrobe. We often look to New York street style for fashion inspiration because it just happens to be the fashion capital of the world. No big deal. Fashion is an integral part of life when living in New York because everything from fashion week to major brand events are happening all around you all the time. It only makes sense to take some style notes from what people are wearing on the streets.

New York City Post-Grad Advice With Elsa Flike by MOLLY HARRIGAN

New York City: The end-all-be-all post-college destination for so many of us. The city that never sleeps and holds endless possibilities for all of us who want to make it somewhere someday. It seems unfathomable, unattainable, and nothing less than a dream. BUT it’s not just another impossible narrative we craft for our future selves, pining over the idea of big-girl jobs and morning bagel walks. So we talked to Elsa Flike, 24 year-old graduate from the Pratt Institute living in Brooklyn, who’s managed to make all of our dreams her reality. She’s shared some advice to help us get there.

Job Hunting:

Jobs. The most important aspect to New York City living and the driving factor for most of our anxieties when confronting big-city living. We wanted to know what it’s like going into the world’s most bustling city on the hunt for a career that can keep us afloat and combat the perils the city has on our wallets. What is your take on city side hustles while in pursuit of your dream job? Would you consider the positions which you currently have as your dream job or more of a temporary means to stay afloat? “I’ve pretty much always had a side hustle, and I know lots of others who do too. As an artist and designer, it’s been a great source of income for me on the side of my day job, but also allowed me to create things I normally couldn’t in a corporate environment. That’s not to say that I don’t take on “boring” projects to pay the bills, but freelance allows me to cherry pick and over time only do projects that I feel are worthwhile. Before freelancing, I worked retail jobs on the side. Working a service job in New York is a great way to learn to appreciate the people that really keep the city running, and it gives you a better understanding of the grind.” 18 UGIRL

probably spent a couple months living in Murray Hill) recommending average, expensive, and popular restaurants. If your phone eats first, take those reccos; otherwise, don’t believe the hype. There are unassuming momand-pop restaurants that have been here for decades that are amazing, you just need to seek them out.”

Socializing: Feeding Ourselves:

We’re suckers for $10 coffees and overpriced breakfasts. NYC is the city that caters to our every brunch and cocktail hour needs, but it comes with a hefty price tag. From boujee grocery stores to glittering bodegas, the food world in the city is paralyzing and we want to try it all, immerse ourselves into the diverse options NYC so enticingly displays to us without breaking the bank. How do we curb our cravings and occasionally indulge at the same time? We asked, they answered. How have you learned to balance the overwhelming NYC “foodie scene” and pricier urban grocery shopping with a budget in mind? Where do your indulgences lead and how can we navigate that balance? “Keeping to a rigid budget in NYC, for me, is very difficult. Instead, I like to set a semi-flexible number of times per month I’ll treat myself to eat out at restaurants. Events come up, spontaneous dates, working late, new places open, plans change — all these moving parts make it hard for me to keep to a specific number. It stresses me out. That doesn’t mean I go and spend $200 on a meal when I do go out, it just makes life more flexible and fun. I would also say to take word-of-mouth recommendations from friends/ acquaintances over anything you read or see on social media. I’ve seen a lot of “foodie” TikTok girls (who have

Leaving our highschool friends was hard. But without the given promise of meeting new friends as we anticipated coming to college, leaving our college friends sounds paralyzing. We’re thrown out into the real world with little direction and no one by our sides. The thought of finding a new crew in the midst of thousands is frankly terrifying. The city is huge. And Scary. And Overwhelming. How did you find your group and your groove and how would you inspire others to do the same? “1. Introduce yourself to strangers — at a bar, on the subway, in the park, anywhere. Some of my closest friends have no connection to one another, they’re people I’ve met out in public at random. This city is one of the friendliest I’ve been in. 2. Join clubs and organizations — there are a million different organizations or clubs to join that already have like minded people in it. There are endless fun things to do where people already share similar interests. 3. Friend of a friend — a friend of mine started a dinner club called “friend of a friend” where everyone brings a plus one that most other people don’t know, and you take turns hosting the dinners. Getting to know people over dinner and seeing intimately how people live is a good way to experience the city, especially when you’re trying to expand your friend group.”

all the fun New York City can offer us after sunset: Whether you stay in or stay out all night, what are some pointers you would offer a little sister on navigating the vast world of NYC clubbing and going out without over exerting yourself or your wallet?

Commuting:

We hate $20 ubers just as much as the next person but driving is naturally out of the picture in the city. So how are we to get from place to place on the daily? Do we hustle and get those steps in? But what if we oversleep? What if we can’t afford inner-city housing and turn to the commuter lifestyle? We wanted to know… What’s your take on commuting? Love it? Hate it? “Public transportation is amazing and anyone who disagrees is wrong. Yes, it has flaws. Yes, it gets crowded. Yes, it can feel dirty. But you can’t uber everywhere all the time (or if you can, good for you). But more than price, it lets you see the city in a 360 way. The subway is convenient and great when it’s great, but there’s a lot of other ways to get around as well. I’m a huge proponent of Citibikes - they really help you navigate streets and neighborhoods in a way that makes you geographically confident. And you also get to take in all the views whether you’re zooming through a side street or booking it over the Williamsburg Bridge. The bus is also underrated and helpful when it gets too cold to walk long distances between subway stations. The second the rain hits the pavement and Uber prices spike, you’ll at some point embrace public transportation whether you like it or not.”

Night Life:

NYC club life is a highly discussed topic amongst us hopefully soon-to-be citygoers. So we wanted to know… what are the do’s and do-not’s of city nightlife and how can we manage our budgets, sleep schedules, and everything in between while savoring and soaking up

“1. Over-tip your bartender — this may seem counterintuitive to not exerting your wallet, but it’ll save you money in the long run (and maybe get you a friend or two behind the bar!). Making friends with the bartenders at your local neighborhood bar is also a great way to get to know people and show your appreciation for their work. I can’t count how many free drinks I’ve had at my neighborhood bar...I’m sure it outweighs the ones I’ve bought. 2. Nightlife doesn’t have to be clubbing — Comedy shows! Musicals! Art installations! Concerts! Poetry slams! Don’t get me wrong, every now and then I love a sunrise club night, but it’s hard to do that all the time. The city has so many good quality live shows and performances, you can be blown away by a $10 ticket at a small venue.

Superficials:

What is something superficial you live by now that you wouldn’t have previously considered as a “rule” in your world until living in the city? (think: never leave home without an umbrella; combating bed bugs, roaches, and street vermin; push your ego aside, it’s too cold to look cool every day in the winter; etc….

2. Embrace dirt — If you want to wear those new open-toed shoes you just got, don’t get grossed out when you come back after a full day of walking and the bottom of your feet are nasty. You might spend an hour getting ready but when you’re waiting for the train in the middle of July, you’ll sweat off all your makeup. 3. Treasures on the street — Some of my favorite furniture has been stoop finds. Don’t be afraid to snag things off the street that you like. People put out all kinds of things that are perfectly fine.”

Big Picture Advice:

All things considered, we just want motivation, someone to tell us our daydreams can turn into realities with hardwork and inspiration in hand. Steer us in the right direction, we need a kick in the butt. What is the one elevator-pitch-bigpicture-styled piece of advice you can offer to undergrads aspiring to live and work in the city?

“Don’t live here like it’s temporary, live here like it’s your home. Take advantage of what the city has to offer, but pace yourself. The city is for everyone — there are a million ways you could live it, none of which are wrong.”

“1. Never feel bad for saying no — FOMO is real, but so is mental health. Everyone needs to take a day every now and then, especially if you get dropped into a bustling city and can’t seem to catch a break. One of the things I still struggle with is the anxiety that comes with declining plans or choosing to stay in for the day when it feels like everyone else is out and doing all the things all the time. It takes a while to get over the fact that you can’t always be “on”. Fun things to do in the city will never end, so take a beat when you need it. UGIRL 19

Cult Classics and Their Influence on Fashion Coming to a theatre (and closet) near you... by ELLIE BATTEN

The all-pink business attire worn by Elle Woods in Legally Blonde was my first true love, and I stand by that to this day. It’s no secret that our favorite movies shape who we are as people, and as we all know, what we wear is integral to our personality – we can express what’s on the inside on the outside. It’s no surprise that well-loved cult classics continue to influence trends. Fashion is cyclical, and as long as we keep re-watching our favorite movies, the impact they have on our wardrobes is a no-brainer. If you look at what’s trending now, there’s a certain sense of nostalgia that continues to remind us of the classic movies we grew up with and continue to love.

and greed. Veronica is primarily seen in blue, which is associated with intelligence and stability. All of these colors represent their individual personalities throughout the film, which is something that made the movie such a classic in today’s age.

#3: Clueless (1995)

The 90s have been in for a while now, and you’d be totally buggin’ if you think the costume design in Clueless is anything less than iconic. Even though the looks in the movie scream classic 90s now, Clueless was revolutionary in terms of fashion. The grunge aesthetic was at

#5: Jennifer’s Body (2009)

#1: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

The birth of the little black dress can be traced back to the queen herself, Audrey Hepburn. It’s timeless, iconic, and a staple in almost every girl’s closet. Although the LBD has never gone out of style, elegant minimalism has been having a moment recently. The “French Girl” aesthetic has been super popular within the last few years – think oversized button downs, big sunglasses, and trench coats – which embodies the elegance that the clothes in Breakfast at Tiffany’s helped to create. This movie also played a massive part in combining the worlds of fashion and Hollywood. Now, it’s completely normal to spot couture in TV shows and movies, but Hepburn’s partnership with Givenchy was the beginning of celebrity brand endorsement deals throughout the industry.

#2: Heathers (1989)

When Heathers came out, the costume design embodied the excess of the 1980s, which can easily be seen in today’s trends – monochrome, maximalism, co-ords, and oversized blazers are everywhere right now. And who could forget the 2018 scrunchie revival? Each Heather has her own color – Heather Chandler wears red, which is commonly associated with power and strength, Heather MacNamara wears yellow to show that she is the kindest of the group, and Heather Duke wears green, a color closely related to jealousy 24 UGIRL

loud, and unapologetically feminine. The appeal of the early aughts today isn’t that surprising. After living in sweat pants for almost a year and a half, people want to dress up and have fun. Y2K fashion is bold, adventurous, and youthful. Plus, if you’re going to try the bend and snap in anything, it might as well be a hot pink velour tracksuit. Legally Blonde added depth to the Malibu Barbie aesthetic, too. Proving that she could be a Marilyn and a Jackie, Elle rocks pink business attire, which is a total power move. Now, thanks to Elle, it’s way more common to see a more feminine side to classic corporate looks.

its height in the early 90s – think baggy pants, greasy hair, and plaid everything. Cher Horowitz’s closet ushered in a completely new way of dressing. The bright yellow plaid set, knee high socks, and *the* Calvin Klein mini dress embodied a preppy, feminine look that was a complete 180 from the grunge alternative. Today, chunky Mary Janes, minimalist slip dresses, cropped tees, and tennis skirts are more or less staple pieces, and we have Clueless to thank for that.

#4: Legally Blonde (2001)

This movie is the unofficial official guidebook for Y2K fashion which, as we all know, has defined the 2020s so far. Low rise denim, track suits, Tiffany and sequin bathing suits crept back into the limelight on TikTok and have been further popularized by celebs like Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Kendall Jenner (just to name just a few). Elle Woods’ wardrobe screams Y2K Malibu Barbie – it’s fun,

Do you ever just want to wear a mini skirt and eat boys? Yeah, me too. The looks in Jennifer’s Body put a darker (and sexier) twist on early 2000s fashion. Denim mini skirts, rhinestone belts, and velour zip ups are staples in this masterpiece of a movie. Jennifer’s Body is also a great look into the evolution of Y2K looks. Layered cami’s and henley shirts make up the majority of the costume design – especially since both of these trends grew increasingly popular in the late 2000s. It’s safe to say that this movie has helped influence the rise in Y2K fashion the past few years. I know it’s hard to believe, but Jennifer’s Body was not an immediate hit when it came out. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always had a cult following, but only recently has it become more well-known and appreciated. The amount of Y2K inspo TikTox that pull from this movie is insane, and we love to see Jennifer’s Body and Megan Fox getting the respect they deserve. Cult classics have had a huge influence on today’s fashion trends, especially when referring to the looks we know and love today. These movies are almost like fashion time capsules… and now that we are old enough to make our own fashion decisions and dress in a way that represents our personality, taking inspo from our favorite movies makes it easy to pull together an outfit. Just remember, next time you pull out that LBD or hot pink blazer, you have to rock it like Elle and Cher would want you to.

Who would think you’d be trying to fit into your clothes from when you were five!

by AMANDA ROSENTHAL

graphics by OLIVIA VALCOURT

Wouldn’t it be nice to take a time machine and go back a decade to a time where you didn’t care about what you wore? A time where we didn’t seek for others’ approval and wore what made us happy (even if that meant wearing the same princess dress two weeks in a row). We took risks, mixed prints, and didn’t care if our undies were showing while on the monkey bars. What if I told you your clothes from your youth are making a comeback? In the fashion world this literally is our youth. Matching sets, bucket hats, monochromatic looks, collard dresses, and more are reemerging into the fashion world! It’s time to start looking at your baby photos (I’m sure your mom would love a text asking for them) and start bringing out your inner child. It’s time to ask your younger self for some fashion advice.

Matching Sets and Monochromatic Moments

As you can see on social media everywhere, matching sets are totally in! Specifically, biker short sets. Remember that matching set your mom bought in three different colors? I bet you wish you had them now. Sites like Aritzia, Set Active, Los Angeles Apparel and more have been promoting sets in all different silhouettes and hues for a while now. It’s time to take some style advice from your inner child and wear a cute matching set for an everyday look. Pair it with a basic white sneaker or even a chunky dad sneaker and handbag and channel your inner model off duty look. You can mix and match colors or go for an all-monochromatic look. Monochromatic looks are huge for this upcoming winter and what screams childhood more than wearing an entire outfit in your favorite color?!

Wear an all-monochromatic look in a cute set for a streetstyle look or wear a pantsuit set and some pumps for a night out in the city. Whatever you end up wearing make sure to thank your younger self for having style as a three-year-old.

Fun Prints, Tie Dye, and Graphic Tees

It’s time to revert to Justice. Fun kitschy prints inspired by Limited Too and Justice have been emerging in the fashion world. Frankies bikinis is just one of the major retailers pulling prints inspired by our childhood. Brands are breaking out of their comfort zones by creating collections in wild prints and colors, something you would find in a coloring book. They are coming out with swimsuits, miniskirts, cropped t-shirts, and even dresses in funky prints. On top of that, Tie Dye, from our days at summer camp, has already been super popular these past two summers. Fashion trends seem to cycle back around, so it’s no shocker that as we come out of a global pandemic designers want to pull from our playful and imaginative childhoods. So many childhood t-shirts were filled with non-sense sayings, but now they would totally be in (ok maybe not all the peace, love, justice tops, but you get what I’m saying). Baby tees and graphic t-shirts have been worn by models, influencers, and celebrities everywhere. Sites like Realization Par and With Jean have been a huge source of these cute and flirty tops. It’s time to look through some storage bins to see if any of your baby tees (literal baby tees) fit!

Babydoll Dresses and Collars

Baby doll dresses are the new LBD. Instead of going for something simple and classic, branch out and wear something whimsical like a baby doll dress. Brands like Selkie have made something so youthful and childlike into high fashion. Baby dresses were rocked at fashion week and have been seen on numerous influencers. You can finally tell your younger self that it is socially appropriate to wear a princess dress out in public. Live out your tea party fantasy and rock a cute baby doll dress or make it edgier and pair it with some killer boots. If you are into super girlie trends, then you would be happy to hear that collars are huge for winter! Brands like Ganni are even selling collars separately so that you can pair them with anything: a cute dress, knitted sweater, fitted cardigan, or even a basic tee. It’s time to channel your inner Blaire and Serena and pull off a fun collar, in ode to your preppy childhood self. Our childhood fashion choices may have been riskier or maybe even a bit more eccentric, but you would get dressed in what felt most fun. Currently, fashion is all about embracing changes, being bold, and even a bit playful. Put on what your inner five-year-old self would pick out from your closet and transform back into your youthful self because fashion is currently our youth.

Going Out Looks Through the Decades A Blast from the Past! by BRITNEY KIRWAN

graphics by JULIA THACK

You’d be lying if you said you’ve never wanted to dance under a disco ball wearing bell-bottoms or go on a date to a drive-in movie wearing a pink poodle skirt. Each decade from the past comes with its own iconic set of trends that we still reminisce about to this day. Here’s a little blast from the past of some of our favorite going-out

’s 0 5 9 1

Time to put on your go go boots and get your groove on because we’re headed into the 60’s. A time full of color (Did I mention this was when tie dye was invented?!), bold florals, and psychedelic prints. Shift dresses were all the rage and were worn with some funky colored tights in order to make the outfit look more eccentric. For hair, it was all about “the Beehive”. It consisted of a combination of backcombing and teasing and probably required at least one bottle of hairspray to keep the look from falling apart (The more hairspray, the better!). The makeup looks of the 60’s are probably my favorite compared to any other decade. The goal was to have big eyes by applying a thick winged liner, eyeshadows in cool tones, a cold cut crease and spidery eyelashes. Complexions were usually matte and lips were kept pale. I definitely dig it!

s ’ 0 7 19

26 UGIRL

Ahh, the 50’s. What a celebrated time for fashion. With icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Marylin Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor, there’s so much from this decade that could be written about. For starters, The classic 1950’s “pin up style”, seen all over magazines, was all about sex appeal and became the trend for women to copy. They aimed to have an hourglass silhouette which is why dresses with a cinched waist were widely popular for going out. They were usually knee length (Ooo risky!) and were worn in a variety of playful colors and prints. Hair was worn in many diverse styles as it was a time for experimentation and breaking away from many social “norms”. The typical makeup look consisted of creamy foundation, pastel pink blush, soft eyeshadows, mascara, and the infamous red lip to top it off. These looks really had people cruisin’ for a bruisin’!

1960’s

Now, the 70’s was a decade I wish I had lived through. It was a decade full of excess. Disco music, loud and vibrant clothing, and big feathered hair are just a few things that made the 70’s legendary. The party looks had more of a casual chic vibe to them (Definitely nothing wrong with that!). Women typically wore mini skirts and/or bell bottom jeans going out and wore a flowy blouse for the top. No other shoe besides platforms could be worn for dancing under a disco ball (...and it shouldn’t have been any other way!). Softer makeup looks were usually worn out with some shimmery eyeshadows, black eyeliner, and mascara. The looks of a “Dancing Queen”!

The electric eighties were all about bold styles and silhouettes. It was known for being an eclectic decade in all things fashion. Women wore spanning ripped neon tights, oversized blazers, and poof skirts. Hair was permed like there was no tomorrow and makeup looks were anything but simple. The totally tubular makeup looks of the 80’s included bottle heavy foundation, pressed powder, colorful eyeshadows, heavy mascara, and bright lipsticks that were made to complete the look.

90’s

There has definitely been a resurgence of early 2000’s trends in today’s going out looks (I really hope Y2k never goes out of style!). Everything from baby tees to low rise flare jeans, and baguette bags. I don’t think you understand, but I’m obsessed. This was the only time period you could ever get away with wearing a dress over jeans without anyone questioning it. There’s so much variety to this decade of fashion that I could honestly go on and on. Some of my favorite going out looks would have to be a halter top with some lace-up jeans or a cut-out dress with platform boots. The most iconic hair look of the early 2000’s would definitely have to be choppy layered hair with wispy bangs. To top it off, makeup looks were normally worn with heavy pink blush, ultra thin eyebrow arches, and high contrasted lip-liner.

1980

’s

Everything about the 90’s just screams nostalgic and was defined by a return to minimalist fashion. The style was definitely on the grungier side and included pieces that we still love today. A lot of the going out looks could either be dressed up or more dressed down. Slip dresses were commonly worn out, however, just a simple babydoll dress over biker shorts would easily suffice. Shoes like Doc Martens and platform sneakers would be worn with almost any outfit (Definitely not mad about that trend!). Hair was sometimes half crimped, half straight (Yeah, I don’t know how I feel about that one, though...), in a high ponytail with an oversized scrunchie, or styled straight with butterfly clips. The makeup looks included a matte face, pencil thin eyebrows, over lined lips, and cool-toned eyeshadows. A.K.A the Kate Moss makeup look!

2000

s

The fluid nature of fashion has allowed iconic trends to shape decades and culture, dictating style discourse and relevance among consumers and the industry itself. From poodle skirts to leather pants, fashion continues to have a massive impact on how people express themselves through what they wear.

That’s Showbiz, Baby: A Child Star Timeline It’s not the suite life all the time.

by ALLY LAIN-HEDDEN Whether you shrieked whenever Nick Jonas sang “Red Dress” or cried your eyes out to Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” we all love our childhood stars. Regardless of who you support, we all can agree that our favorite celebrities have changed drastically. From Britney, Amanda, Justin, Miley, and Hilary, we are here to give you an update on the lives of those who practically raised us. Let’s talk about Britney Spears. Before all of the scandals and the iconic Hulu documentary, she starred on the hit Disney Channel show, Mickey Mouse Club. Following the show’s cancellation, Britney went on to sign a contract with Jive Records. Then came “Baby One More Time,” and we all know how that went...it’s still on my playlist today. As her fame skyrocketed, the innocent image she once portrayed was replaced with her party girl counterpart. Pressure from the industry and her family led to a decline in her mental health, multiple rehab stays, an infamous custody battle, and, eventually, conservatorship. Thankfully, the fight to end her conservatorship is moving in the right direction with her fans by her side.

28 UGIRL

graphics by SAMANTHA FUSS

Along with Britney, Amanda Bynes is another notable example of a child star fallen victim to the industry. Amanda landed roles in Hairspray, and She’s the Man at a young age, putting her in the spotlight. Following a brief battle with substance abuse, she traded in her blonde looks for vibrant hair colors, lip injections, and a couple of tattoos. Her parents decided to step in and take conservatorship over her, which they still have today. Today she focuses on her education, meditation, and living a quiet lifestyle. From a small-town boy to a global heartthrob, Justin Bieber captured our hearts as kids and continues to make us swoon as adults. Yet his sensation on stage came with many hardships behind the scenes. He has opened up to his heavy drug addiction, failed relationships, and legal trouble and is not afraid to speak out against the industry. With every decision scrutinized, Justin found himself alone and hated by the world. Taking the time to heal following his bad decisions and constant media attention has allowed Justin to rediscover himself. He now follows a healthier lifestyle and recently privately married Hailey Baldwin, breaking hearts worldwide. While under constant pressure, he has found himself falling back in love with music and writing.

Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, has been through it all. Becoming a household name from her roles on Disney, Miley has constantly felt the pressure to fit the industry image. Industry expectations caused body dysmorphia and battles with her confidence. Eventually, she grew away from Disney but continued her acting career with The Last Song, where she met her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. Still heartbroken about that. Breaking away from her child image came with the infamous VMA performance and the Wrecking Ball video. Her outrageous outfits, onstage antics, and public activism were her way of showing the world that she had grown. Years later, she found herself on a new path and embraced her countryside with Malibu and Younger Now. Personally my favorite Miley era. While Disney Channel and Nickelodeon may have given us our favorite childhood stars, they also played a role in shaping them, and sometimes, breaking them. Some honorable mentions include MaCaulay Culkin, Hillary Duff, Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Ashley Tisdale (team Sharpay forever). Always going to be obsessed with my childhood stars but definitely going to pay more attention to what’s going on behind the scenes.

Accessories That Will Never Go Out of Style Old Favorites with a Splash of 2021

by ISABEL DUNCAN graphics by AVERIE COHEN

B

etween the resurgence of Y2k fashion, not your mother’s outfits from the 70s and 80s, and finally being able to ditch our pandemic-chic messy buns, accessories have played a major role in dressing up many trends. This fall, chunky-colored rings, mini bags, and claw clips are back on everyone’s radar. After the last two years of minimalism and, I can’t believe we let this happen, beige, we’re psyched to see bold, stacked accessories coming back to make us look that much hotter.

70s hoops

Fashion always comes back full circle. Your mom probably talks about the battle scars she has from wearing heavy hoop earrings every day in the 70s and 80s. Going from cringe to cute, the 70s Cher hoop has been transformed into the chunky baby hoop of 2021. Popular brands today are Jennifer Fisher, JacqMaria Jewelry, and small Etsy shops such as Dainty and Gold. Whether you stack the hoops up your ear or stick to a simple look, hoops can transform any monochromatic look and give it that extra oomph.

Y2k Charm necklaces

This trend took the summer by storm, and we still see it pop up around campus. What first started as a quarantine hobby is now the latest trend of the Y2K fashion revival, being sported by celebrities like Justin Bieber and Emma Chamberlain. These fun, customizable, and most importantly cheap necklaces have become

staples in many of our closets, representing youthfulness after a dismal year and a half. For a one-of-a-kind necklace of your own, try browsing through various Etsy shops. WARNING: might be cheugy in like, five minutes.

Nameplate Necklaces

These necklaces took the world by storm when Carrie Bradshaw sported one in an episode of Sex and the City. And now, 20 years later, they are back. Nameplate necklaces are the perfect way to customize your look by literally putting your name, (or, in true 2021 fashion, your zodiac sign) around your neck. Whether you layer it with other chains or leave it as a statement piece, you can't get much more personal than this jewelry trend.

Y2k mini purses

The mini bag is the perfect accessory for the twenty-something who only needs her phone, lip gloss, and wallet on a night out. With so many styles available, it’s easy to stock up on almost every night-out outfit. From Paris Hilton circa 2001 or Bella Hadid today, these bags are a staple piece 20 years later. Popular styles include the mini pochette from Louis Vuitton, the Jacquemus bag, Prada Re-Edition, or cheaper options from Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters.

80s Chunky Rings

With the surge of maximalist fashion in 2021, rings have been no exception. These chunky rings come in multiple styles and colors and allow for mixing, matching, and stacking. These rings can easily spice up a normally drab outfit and make it fabulous. Just be careful not to go overboard and risk looking gaudy;

a mix of delicate and bold pieces will make the look more blended instead of over-the-top. Great brands for delicate or bold gold stackers are Ana Louisa and Mejuri, while colored dome and resin rings can be found on Etsy, ASOS, and Urban Outfitters.

Claw and Butterfly Clips:

These clips have become a must-have over the last two years in quarantine. An accessory that makes your hair look cute without having to put work into it? Sign me up! Although butterfly clips are still used today, its cousin, the modern claw clip, has taken over our For You pages and Pinterest boards. These clips have become the best way to elevate a look without having to settle for a simple ponytail or bun. Aside from the claw clip, butterfly clips are also still alive and well, seen most frequently as a part of game day looks, concert hair-dos, and the occasional day look.and the occasional day look. Hopefully you were able to find new favorite accessories and ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe. Y2K and 80s accessories are not going anywhere and will definitely be good to bring into the new year. These trends encourage you to branch out and try new things, you never know what it could lead to! UGIRL 29

TikTok Versus the Trend Cycle: How Social Media Became a Fashion Catalyst Not your mother’s September Issue by AINSLEY HOLMAN

30 UGIRL

graphics by SAMANTHA FUSS

I

f you could personify 2021 fashion in one item, what would it be? Your pick would probably range from the iconic House of Sunny Hockney Dress, a Martha Calvo necklace, or maybe a high neck crop top in a maximalist print. What do all of these have in common besides being some of the biggest microtrends of the year? They were all born, spread, and shared on social media in the form of “outfit of the day” videos, collective hauls, or from someone asking in a comment section, “OMG! I love your top, where did you get it?”

The long-held inaccessibility of fashion is what creates the exclusive nature that many spend their lives chasing and longing to be a part of. It is what drives people from all over the world to move to cities like New York City and Paris to begin careers as models, designers, creative directors, and more. It is what caused events such as Fashion Week and The MET Gala to rise to international prominence and recognition in pop culture. It is what dictates what is “hot” and what is “not,” what is “in” and what is “out.”

TikTok, one of the biggest and most influential apps to date, has fast fashion and microtrends in a chokehold, completely dictating movement of smaller scale style discourse. These pieces all fall in and out of trend extremely quickly without actually changing the baseline of what is considered fashionable.

High fashion is not a narrative created by others, but in fact the narrator of all things culture, trends, fashion, and style. Think back to one of the most infamous scenes in The Devil Wears Prada. Yes, the cerulean sweater dialogue. In this scene, Miranda Priestly brilliantly explains

How this cycle continues to thrive and perpetuate unsustainable style is due to its easily replicable nature; TikTok has seemingly made fast fashion even faster. A popular creator will post in a top, most likely from a sustainable (and expensive) fashion brand. The overwhelming amount of people eyeing the piece but not being able to afford it makes it a perfect target for imitation from fast fashion companies, such as Amazon, SHEIN, and AliExpress. These companies will then list knockoffs on the top on their sites, with names such as “Women Casual Crew Neck Crop Tank Top Solid Sleeveless Vest,” with the only real differences between the original and the copycat being the quality and the price tag. With these substantial trends replacing each other every few weeks, keeping up with the fashion cycle is nearly impossible. By the time you have already received your $12 knockoff, the next popular item is already starting to gain attention. This watering down of high fashion, an industry that has isolated itself as an intimidating and exclusive club that only a select few can access and control, begs the question, has the facade of fashion finally fallen? Yes and no.

the “trickle-down” effect commonly witnessed in the fashion industry, and how a majority of what we buy at Zara, Aritzia, etcetera, are all direct reflections and copycats of previous runway or editorial looks. So, while the machinations of the fashion industry stay running, it is unlikely that higher end brands will cease in their ability to influence and control the narrative and direction of trends. However, the influence that social media has on the trend cycle is a prominent threat to how the fashion industry operates in terms of production and design turnover, a significant factor in regards to over-consumption and fast fashion.

Producing an item of sustainable clothing is much more complex than the immediate producer to consumer pipeline seen in other industries and fields. It entails a mood board, designing, collecting swatches and sourcing fabric, fittings, outfit trials, mass production, promotion, and physical or online distribution. The TikTok trend cycle has eliminated consumer patience, a key aspect of the process. Consumerism and instant gratification have taken its hold on younger demographics, so once they see it on their favorite influencer, they want it in their possession within the week. Obviously, a majority of high fashion brands are not going to sacrifice their design integrity for the desires of teenagers on the Internet. However, voids in a market will continue to be filled by those willing to produce their product cheaper and quicker. This puts fast fashion brands such as SHEIN on the map for consumers, furthering their reach within the fashion industry. Simultaneously, the ever-changing nod of what is “in” and what is “out” has people placing massive orders every month, piling up in their closet before they decide to drop it off at Goodwill or throw it in the garbage. This is extremely detrimental to the environment, with the fashion industry becoming the secondbiggest consumer of water in production. According to the UN Environment Program, it is also responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. While the statistics and consequences seem dire, there are ways individuals can push back at the unsustainable social media-fueled trend cycle. Thrift shopping, shopping on Depop, and using what’s already in your closet to create unique outfits are just a few ways to up your wardrobe sustainably. Trendy does not equate to personal style, so figure out what you love and what looks best before buying.

Heighten Your Confidence: Best Heels to Wear Out Nothing says power like a pair of stilettos. by SAM SHENKER

graphics by AMANDA PADEN

The power you feel when wearing the perfect heel is unmatchable. But with this unparalleled confidence comes the inevitable barefoot-at-2 a.m. walk of shame. It’s hard to find a good high-heel period, let alone one to ensure a sick night of running around. Keep reading to find the perfect heel that will snatch your legs, won’t burn a hole in your wallet, keep you dancing, and ensures the ability to be worn even after a night on the town. Let’s find the perfect going-out heel with the 4 C’s: comfort, class, cost, and control.

Comfort Photo by Steve Madden

The most important aspect of rocking a heel is feeling totally comfortable in it. We’re all way too familiar with the horrendous feeling of wearing a heel that will literally break your toe in half. A skinny heel with a lack of surface area may look nice, but in the end, you’ll be left behind complaining about your feet. Platform heels will give you that extra height and are comfortable enough to be worn all night. The platform provides a leveling effect in relation to the heel, and typically has a ‘chunkier’ look. The ‘chuniker’ the heel is, the more surface area it has, therefore resulting in more comfort. Yeah, that’s right. MATH.

Class

It’s easy to look at a red-bottom shoe and declare it the best, but remember: brand name does not correlate to comfort or control. Some of the most famous brands in respect to heels are in fact, the least probable or comfortable. There are heels that display class that are also practical. A cheesy looking heel can take your night-out look from Kim K to Snooki in a heartbeat. Try to stay away from super-high or duped heels. Instead, look for a classic-clean style that will add some spice to your night while staying true to being a classy party-animal.

Cost

The price range when it comes to buying heels is overwhelming. While price should represent the most practical and comfortable shoe, it usually doesn’t... but again, your cheapest find usually isn’t too practical or comfy either. It’s important to find a happy medium, especially if said heels are going to be worn out around the town. Who wants their $2,000+ Louboutin’s to be covered in tequila and sweat? A mid-price baseline ensures the shoe is well-made, but not unreasonable to be worn out.

Safety is a huge factor when wearing heels. A few drinks in, falling is probably involved in your night. I myself have been subject to many unsteady heels. As said before in the comfort section, a chunkier heel will provide more surface area. More surface area = more stability. Choose a heel with more surface area to ensure no falling in front of the person you’re trying to impress.

Overall suggestions for the PERFECT PARTY HEEL:

Steve Madden: most practical in relation to cost and class. Steve Madden is notorious for taking designer-styles and transforming them into a more affordable shoe. Additionally, Steve Madden has a plethora of sizes suitable for anyone. Asos: has the best biggest selection for the lowest prices. Asos has every basic heel you would ever need. DSW: Designer Shoe Warehouse. All the brands you hoped and dreamed about but at a low low cost. Strap on those heels, put on your mascara, and hit the road. The right pair of heels will quite literally grow your confidence, and more than the four-inch boost that comes from your favorite black booties. 38 UGIRL

The Crystal You Need Based on Your Zodiac Sign Yes, astrology actually does matter.

by MORGAN CALCARA

graphics by RUTH SHIFERAW

Trying to find the crystal that is best for you can be challenging and scary. There are so many different gems and stones out there with a million different properties, so how are you supposed to know which is going to benefit you the most? Luckily, your zodiac sign is a great place to start. Aquarius (January 20-February 18): This sign is all about being independent, confident, and self-reliant. Since they are so self-assured and independent, sometimes this sign can become overly emotional, tempered, moody and not that great at commitments. Garnet is a gemstone that represents purity, personal power, and commitment. It will help this sign with commitment, confidence, and passion. Pisces (February 19-March 20): Pisces are the emotional, sensitive, and adaptable sign. They are in touch with their feelings and have a very gowith-the-flow mentality. This sign needs a healing crystal, such as Amethyst. This purple stone has significant calming and healing energy that can nurture this sign when their emotions become overwhelming. Aries (March 21-April 19): This fire sign is known for its determination, ambition, and passion. They can be aggressive and reactive, and can argue for hours. Aquamarine is a gemstone that is associated with healing and communication. This stone will help an Aries stand up for themselves and be who they are, encouraging compassion and calmness. Taurus (April 20-May 20): This sign is known for its strong-willed nature. While this can be good when they are striving for great things and extravagance, it also causes them to be stuck in their routine ways. Peridot is a natural healer and soother that symbolizes harmony and peacefulness. This will help calm the Taurus and promote flexibility. Gemini (May 21-June 20): This is the twin sign, so they can bounce from serious to goofy in a matter of minutes. Along with their extroverted and fun personality, Geminis are often indecisive. Agate is the main stone of Gemini. This gemstone is known for balancing the body and mind, helping Geminis deal with their duality. Cancer (June 21-July 22): This is the sign known to be the most sensitive, caring, loving, and will do anything for their friends and family. This can often become unhealthy for Cancerians as they often feel rejected or forget to live in the moment. Rose Quartz matches the loving and caring side of Cancerians and promotes friendship and self-love, something this sign craves.

Leo (July 23-August 22): This sign is strong and brave, just like the lion that represents it. Being a fire sign, they also carry a lot of compassion and drive within them. Carnelian is a brownish-red stone gemstone that represents bold energy and courage. This stone will help the fire signs stay true to their passion and internal fire. Virgo (August 23-September 22): This Earth sign is humble, practical, and reliable. They are always willing to find the best in everyone and everything, however since they are detail-oriented, they often struggle with perfectionism. Citrine is a protective stone that will stabilize their energy and help them let go of negativities and prevent them from getting stuck in the details. Libra (September 23-October 22): Libras are the sign of balance and equality. They are often the peacemakers within their relationships and tend to avoid conflict and confrontation at all costs. They often put others before themselves in order to keep conflicts low. Labradorite represents courage and transformation. It helps ease anxieties and negative feelings Librans may have. Scorpio (October 23-November 21): While they are often mistaken for a fire sign because of their passion, power, and stubbornness, this sign is actually a water sign that gets its power from emotions. Malachite is a protection stone that helps to get rid of negative emotions and energies and keep Scorpios protected through all of the ups and downs of their journeys. Sagittarius (November 22-December 21): This sign is the outspoken and optimistic one in your friend group. Being a fire sign, they are very passionate and have a big heart. The Turquoise stone helps to balance out the fiery sign of the Sag. Turquoise is good for balancing emotions and opening communication. Capricorn (December 22-January 19): These signs are your loyal, stable, and reliable besties. They are more grounded than any other sign and they tend to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. They tend to be slight workaholics, so they need crystals that encourage balance in all fields of life. Black Obsidian is a strong and protective stone, helping Caps stay grounded and protected from others as well as a Cap’s own negativity. It is important to remember that this is not an exclusive list. Experimenting with crystals can be a fun and eyeopening experience, so go to your local crystal shop and find which one calls out to you.

PARTY.

HOW TO BE THE LIFE OF THE

The Party Won’t Start ‘Till You Walk In by JOLIE ZENNA

graphics by GEORGIA FLAVELL

Going out culture is an integral part of the college

experience. Whether you’re hitting the frats, the bars, or some random house on Euclid, there’s always something exciting to lace up your corset for. This culture takes a lot of getting used to, especially if you weren’t a major partier in high school. It’s so common to walk into a room full of people and feel totally awkward, regret your outfit, or want to go home. We all have this irrational fear that everyone is looking at us at all times watching our every move, when in reality, they’re probably the most focused on themselves. The only way to really draw attention to yourself at a party is by either acting like a complete idiot (which we’ve all done at some point), or by being the undisputed life of the party. Here’s your ultimate guide on how to be the latter.

Go out with friends that bring out the best in you

There are friends who give the best advice, class friends, and friends who bring out your inner life of the party. You definitely won’t be the life of the party if you spend it babysitting someone who isn’t having fun, so leave the negative energy at home and go out with the friends who believe that any night has the potential to be the best night. Hey, you never know. Go out with friends that will hype you up, be your wingman or woman, and be there at the end of the night when you need help getting back to your apartment. You shouldn’t go out with people you feel the need to impress, because to be the life of the party, you have to be obsessed with your most authentic self. “Fake it ‘til you make it” might work in a beginner Pilates class, but the true life of the party never fakes it, because they’re always having the most fun.

Dress to impress (yourself)

Nothing feels better than looking in the mirror and just feeling...hot. You have to bring that dancing to Big Bootie Vol. 17 in the mirror energy out with you wherever you go. To be the life of the party, you can’t be fixing your shirt every two seconds or questioning if you should have worn a different pair of jeans. Wear what makes you feel like your hottest self, because confidence is your most attractive quality. People are naturally drawn to the most confident person in the room, so if you’re confident enough, you’ll automatically be the center of attention.

“Don’t question if you’re dancing weird or if you look awkward; just be in the moment and think about how good you look to the crowd. ” While loving yourself is the most important, having confidence will guarantee the ability to pull any guy or girl and even get those free drinks (because nobody’s paying $13 for a vodka cran). It’s basically a science. Don’t second guess yourself. Wearing a more bold outfit is a total power move, so don’t be afraid to rock a ‘fit that’s more “out there” than you’re used to.

Really just need to get out of your head

…no matter how hard that may be. I know, easier said than done, but being in our heads is what makes us the downer, and the life of the party only gets down to music. Insecurities can become crippling and get in the way of us taking chances, but taking chances is what being the life of the party is all about. Go up to someone you’ve never met and dance with them. Go in with no expectations and let the night lead you any which way. You want to have a night that is so eventful that you’ll be laughing about it with your friends for years to come. Be the version of yourself that you always want to show, but have always been too scared to show--you’ll feel comfortable at the party when you feel comfortable with yourself. Dance until sunrise, go a little too hard (but only a little), and be completely spontaneous. Let your energy and confidence be contagious, and don’t let anything stop you from living up to your full potential, because babes, you want it? You got it. Fall so in love with yourself that the crowd won’t have it any other way; you’re the undisputed star of the show, center of attention, and life of the party.

Leave all of your inhibitions behind

Have an exam coming up? You can study the next day. Having relationship problems? Put your phone on do not disturb. When you’re out, it’s the time to really let loose and be completely in the moment. People who are the life of the party are having the best time ever and nothing phases them. So whatever issues you are dealing with, push them to the side for the night and just genuinely enjoy yourself. The ~Sunday scaries~ are on Sunday for a reason.

Hangover Cures and Munchies Best Munchies & Drunchies & Hangover Cures: by CC GULBRANDSEN graphics by AVERIE COHEN

Ever woken up with a lingering headache, a bad taste in your mouth, and little to no clue how you got into bed? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. We all wish we could be Kim Kardashian and get an I.V. drip after a long night, but the reality is, all we have to rely on is a us through those Sunday (or Thursday?) scaries. The B.E.C. If you don’t already know, a warm bacon, egg, and cheese is the cure for any Sunday scaries. A B.E.C. has the protein and carbs your body needs to recover from a night out. Now for some science: Bacon contains lots of amino acids to help you start thinking straight. It’s also proven that carbs and protein combined can help boost your metabolism, aka it helps your body get alcohol out of your system faster. To complete the perfect order, ask to add avocado or a hashbrown for that extra morning pick-me-up. No matter how you do it, a bacon, egg, and cheese is sure to take you out of your post-night-out funk. What to take in the morning: We all wish there was a magic pill to wipe away the hangover, sadly that doesn’t exist... but that’s why god invented Advil. There’s nothing worse than waking up with a pounding headache that puts you to bed rest dall day. Before you even go out, make sure Advil is easily accessible from your bed, so you don’t have to leave the coziness of your bed when you wake up feeling your worst. Advil, Alive, and Motrin are all suitable to cure your headache options. If you are really down-bad, Excedrin Migraine is sure to wipe away the awful pounding in your head. 42 UGIRL

Hydrate: Alcohol is dehydrating, and Liquid IV, Pedialyte or any electrolyte drink is a must to replenish and flush out any alcohol in your system. Keep water by your bed at all times and sip on it right when you wake up. It’s essential to drink water all throughout the day so your body can fight the hangover faster. Diner breakfast: Sometimes the best hangover cure is recapping all the funny moments from the night before with friends. Sex and the City much? If you are alive and well enough to get yourself out of bed, go to a diner and bond over warm pancakes and your collective hungover selves. The best part about diners is they have literally anything you could ever wish for when you are feeling the wrath of the night before, from grilled cheese to omelettes to milkshakes. Not only does this hangover cure help you flush out the Sunday scaries, it helps you get out of bed and start your day (and we all know our first meal of the day is not going to be before 12). You’ll never drink again...but then you drank again. To save your morning-after self the night before, here is an ultimate munchies and drunchies list… Frosting and pretzels Oreos and peanut butter McDonalds french fries and a McFlurry Hot cheetos and cream cheese Spicy Grillos pickles Peanut butter and jelly Popcorn and M&Ms Starbucks grilled cheese Lays and sour cream and onion dip

We’ve all been there, hungover and unmotivated, and we can all use a little help getting out of our morning funk. Thankfully, hangovers will fade and we can all thank our favorite comfort foods (and Advil) to get us through.

How to Make the Most of the 20's in Your 20's In the wise words of Justin Bieber, “you should go and love yourself” by JENNY DESTEFANO

graphics by RUTH SHIFERAW

Whenever I get daydreamy in my gen-eds, I often think about myself as an adult (because I refuse to call myself one until I’m 30-- ew). But while I’m picturing a wedding dress fit for Blair Waldorf or brainstorming the least cheugy baby names, I remember what my mom always says: stay single in your 20’s. Through ~situationships~ and Tinder validation, it becomes easier and easier to carry that very piece of advice in my back pocket at all times. Staying single in your 20’s doesn’t mean being lonely (or like, SINGLE for that matter)-- it just means that the only committed relationship you’re in is with yourself. Take it from me, a (pathetically) hopeless romantic: Being your own *wifey* is actually incredibly freeing. Once you surrender the HOLD that your dream meet-cute has on you and take life one second at a time, you’re no longer always searching for something to make your life complete-- it can just be complete. So, how exactly do we go about making the most of this time? Romanticize Everything: The Good, The Bad, and the *Really* Ugly You might think that ~romanticizing~ your life just means staying positive, but really, it’s so much more than that. Think of romanticism in the context of one of my favorite quotes-“See life through rose-colored glasses.” The world looks bubbly and welcoming when it’s pink, but ultimately, you can always take the glasses off when it’s time to make hard and fast decisions. As long as you’re not harming your own well-being or going colorblind when it comes to red flags, romanticizing everything *really* just means that we should embrace the difficult times because it’s all part of our inner growth-the bathtub cries, the little accomplishments, and even the random frat makeouts. (Sometimes a mono scare is feminist and not like, dangerous to my organ health.)

Be Sporadic With Psychoanalysis When you’re navigating new relationships, new opportunities, and new cities, it’s a little too easy to overanalyze *everything.* It’s understandable-- I mean, is change ever not terrifying? Still, when you get into overanalysis, all you’re doing is inviting more unnecessary stress into your brain. The important thing to remember is that not everything means something. Say, for instance, your *person* Snap-texts you asking to hang out for the first time-- right before you were about to knock out for the night. (First of all, if that’s enough to sweep you off your feet, the bar is on the FLOOR, babe. At least iMessage.) You’re allowed to think and feel all your feelings-- just beware of their attachments (and maybe leave that Snap on read for a while).

Learn How to Say ‘No’ to Things Seriously, it’s so important to be assertive with what you want and don’t want. As someone who has difficulty with confrontation (because apparently my brain can’t handle having someone not like me), I’ve learned that saying ‘no’ ≠ being rude. You don’t need to unleash your inner Karen (sorry mom <3) to be straight up with people when things are not okay. I promise, people will appreciate your honesty because they’ll know you authentically, not as someone who joins brunch plans just because she’s afraid of coming off as a b*tch. Let Yourself Feel Uncomfortable Hear me out on this one: though side effects can include full-body cringing and emotional panic, going out of your comfort zone is a crucial life skill to hone. Trying new things is somehow always a recipe for anxiety, but (as cliché as it sounds), you never know what opportunities could lie ahead if you let yourself feel *uncomfy* for a sec. Personally, this is how I’ve gotten through college so far- the more ~extrovert~ situations that I put my ~introvert~ self into, the more thankful I am that I put myself out there. (Keep in mind that this def does NOT apply to situations that are inherently uncomfortable and/or dangerous-- in those cases, feel free to dip, queen. #SafetyFirst <3) Put Yourself First Your adult life is exactly that-- YOURS. That’s why it is imperative (yes, so serious that I pulled out an SAT word) to stay true to yourself at the end of the day. Of course, we still need to give our friends and family the same care and energy they give us and listen to relationship advice (if it’s constructive), but ultimately, you have to do you. If that means piercing your belly button or moving cross-country for the job of your dreams, then f*cking do it. The only person who can make you truly, genuinely, and purely happy is you-- so why not pursue you? If there was ever a time to say ‘YOLO,’ it would be now. Why wait? UGIRL 43

The Unappreciated Allure of Party Prep A serious double standard.

by OLIVE PESCHEL

I

t’s some time in the evening, your pasta with red sauce has just finished digesting and you’re ready to take on the night. You consult your roommates about the tasks at hand. Now these are important tasks, they could determine your future drastically. Make or break any situation. By my description you might assume you’re going on stage or meeting with a big up executive, but really, you’re getting ready to dance with your gals in a cramped sweaty frat. All of your prep for that? And what are the guys doing? Why, they’re just eating kraft mac and cheese before throwing on their dirty Patagonia shirt and khakis. But who’s counting… The party prep for girls at this school has proven to be extremely thorough. It’s time to look into the real point of view of a guy’s getting-ready-

what Shein top we haven’t worn yet. Or if it’s a Docs night or Air Forces night. It’s the constant “Can I wear that?” or “Are you using your Revlon dryer right now?” We are always moving and always looking to perfect our chic appearance before walking into a fraternity or bar with broken floors. It controls the hair washing schedule, the tanning schedule, and so much more time that isn’t reciprocated. Truth be told, that humid house does not deserve how good you look in those leather pants. So why is this the standard? How has it become the norm that we are just supposed to settle for the thoughtless white vans? Looking good and therefore feeling good is a great feeling, but what we need to take a closer look at is the lack of reciprocation from the Brads in our midst. I asked your average Syracuse male, who is greatly immersed in Greek life, what his typical night routine is before a party. One of the first responses that came ever so expectedly was the sentence: “I don’t really have a set plan, I usually do things on the fly.” With all due respect, I think we all know the outcome of this mindset and it definitely doesn’t match up to your perfectly blended eyeshadow. When asked about his hygiene and cosmetic choices before heading into the night, he responded with: “If I already showered at like 2 pm or mid-day, then I won’t shower again before a party…takes about 10 minutes to

get dressed and doing my hair plus cologne takes about 5 minutes.” Seems like a relaxing evening with little to no pressure I’d say. How is it that they

can get away with this little effort? Presenting them with our natural beauty and hightended styles seems a little too giving. You’ve never hugged your roommate while she cried over a guy that smells like chicken tender thursday? Well when you do, just remind her that we will no longer be doing the most. It’s time to stop giving a f**k about how good we look at these parties. Because the proof is in the obvious and axe-smellin pudding: they don’t think twice about their appearance or color coordination.

Hot Girls Have Stomach Problems

G

WTF is IBS and why does everyone have it...

by CHARLIE WENIG and KATIE HILL

one are the days when you can wakeup hungover and peacefully enjoy a bagel with cream cheese. For those of us with sensitive stomachs, your hungover bagel order comes with a side of an IBS attack. And for those of you who don’t understand what we’re talking about, we’re very envious.

graphics by VIVIAN YANG

will still hurt your stomach. Try creating a list of foods on your phone to keep track of what works for you and what doesn’t. If specific foods are giving you problems over and over again, try cutting them out or gradually eating them less.

As affordable foods become more processed and whole foods become more expensive, it can be difficult for those with IBS to find a regime that isn’t ripping up your gut. There has to be a way to eat a slice of pizza and not look like you’re about to give birth to twins...

Maybe it’s not the Food

Stress and anxiety are at an all-time high, especially in college and a lot of us forget that mental health and physical health are much more connected than we think. Ever noticed that your stomach only starts acting up when you’ve been assigned more work than usual? This could be from a high volume of stress or anxiety. We carry a lot of this tension in our gut, so it makes a lot of sense when richer foods begin causing upsets, especially during the school year. Getting stress and anxiety under control is an endless battle, however, relieving these two in some way or another may be the end-all-be-all for your stomach issues. Whether you relieve your stress by working out, taking a nap, or getting your nails done, finding an outlet to get some peace of mind during anxious times is a guarantee to calm down your nerves and ease your stomach.

It’s important to mention that we are by no means registered dieticians who can give you medical-grade advice on how to solve your stomach problems. However, there may be a few hidden secrets to why your gut hates you. As I’m sure many of you know, all of us hot girls experience IBS differently. While some of us can go maybe three times in two weeks, others are going three times in one day. These differences can make it hard to find the perfect solution for your problem while scrolling on IBS TikTok.

Trial and Error

One thing we suggest is a little trial and error. Since everyone’s experience is different, everyone’s treatment will be slightly different as well. It is important to try solutions one at a time, listen to your body, and know it’s okay to give up on those fiber gummies or the magnesium you’re taking even though it works perfectly for your friend. Solving your hot girl stomach problems is not an overnight fix, it takes time to understand that the cure-all is not a bottle of TUMS.

Listening to Your Body

Listening to your body is key when it comes to figuring out your stomach problems. If you eat pasta one night and it hurts your stomach, it’s fair to say if you eat the same thing the next day, it 46 UGIRL

any reaction, and some may cause a literal warzone in your stomach. Read over the list of high FODMAP foods and try cutting them out for a week or two. If you start feeling better, you can slowly incorporate these foods back into your diet to understand what works best for you.

Cutting out High FODMAP foods Now if you take one thing away from this article it should be this: attempting and “Resetting” your Gut Health trial-and-error, listening to your body, Ever heard of Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols? No? Yeah, us either. But what you might have heard of is the low FODMAP diet, which could be the solution for some of you hot girls out there. FODMAPs are a type of carb found in various foods that can cause your body to absorb too much water and ferment in your stomach. The list of foods that FODMAPs are found in is pretty extensive but the big ones are gluten, sugar, and lactose. Following a diet that cuts out high FODMAP foods can be a difficult transition. However, as we said before, everyone is different. Some higher FODMAP foods might not cause

cutting out high FODMAP foods, and/ or leveling your stress might STILL not help all you hot girls out there. It’s important to remember that stomach pain, especially the extremely severe, sometimes just needs the attention of a professional. Trust us, often they actually have some helpful things to say. And in the end, always remember that you’re hot and there are a billion other hot girls out there that are going through the same pain (literally).
