When I joined the University Girl team just over a year ago, it was still just an idea. Immediately recognizing its potential, I knew that the magazine would thrive once it started--yet I did not expect it to roll off the runway as quickly as it did.

Just as the magazine had taken flight, my longtime friend and founder of UGirl, Tayler Bradford, went abroad to Florence this semester, leaving me in the driver’s seat of the magazine that I have come to know and love.

With the help of my brilliant team, I set out to create the second issue of the print magazine in hopes of inspiring UGirls to be not only confident, fearless, career-oriented and trendsetting, but also to take charge of their own lives. This issue features The Americans actress Holly Taylor speaking on the role of independence in her journey to balance work and school (pg 25). As the FX show airs its final season this spring, Taylor is entering a transitional period of her life, like countless other UGirls who are finishing up their semesters and looking ahead to summer. Spring marks a time of freedom and possibility, a time when adventure awaits. Whether your next destination is a music festival, a new internship or an international vacation, go forward with confidence. Try out a new hair and makeup look at your next festival (pg 20), be the best intern that your office has ever seen (pg 13) or even treat yourself to a solo dinner (pg 14). Whatever you do, make the most of it.

I could not have pulled this off without my team. This magazine would be nothing without all of you, and I can’t say thank you enough. I would also like to thank my friends and family who supported me every step of the way, especially my lovely parents.

I’d like to say a special thank you to Corey Sandler. Lastly, I want to send a huge thank you across the ocean to Tayler Bradford for believing in me from the very start.

To me, independence is defined by a sense of loyalty to the best version of yourself. Working on the magazine, I pushed my own boundaries to do exactly that. With that, I hope you love reading the Independence Issue as much as I loved putting it together.

onths of cloud cover and endless snow can definitely leave a girl itching for that natural glow.

But baking in the sun for hours can leave you with damaged skin. Luckily, there are plenty of self-tanning products that can help turn you into a bronze beauty. Opting for self-tanner also gives you more control over the color, eliminates the risk of harmful UV rays and saves you an expensive trip to the salon.

Lotions and mousses provide a beautiful, even tan while also keeping your skin hydrated. Some brands offer products that give an instant bronze, like Jergens Instant Sun or St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse. These help guide you so you don’t miss a patch of skin or apply more than one layer on the same spot.

Other lotions, like Jergens Natural Glow, take time to develop into a glowy tan, and can take up to four applications to see real results. To avoid orange tinted hands, wash the lotion off with whitening toothpaste immediately after applying.

Creating Art “Art is easily one of my favorite hobbies. It’s so relaxing and therapeutic. It’s a way for me to concretely express how I’m feeling on a canvas. If I can’t use words, I know I can use art. I draw inspiration from my own personal experiences, and I usually work alone in my room. Be Meticulous Everybody makes mistakes, but making a mistake when

drafting an email for your boss is just plain embarrassing. You don’t want to seem careless, and there is an easy way to avoid that. Check over your work for spelling and grammar at least twice before handing in any work that you do; it might be tedious, but you will thank yourself later.

alking into the small cafe alone and intimidated, I look to the Italian waitress for any kind of reaction.

But there is just a smile on her face and a hand gesturing me to sit down. I had finally worked up the courage to eat by myself during my semester abroad in Florence, Italy.

As I walked toward the small table surrounded by laughing couples and loud families, I didn’t feel alone.

Although I was by myself, I was part of a community.

When my plate came, I investigated the people eating around me to see if anyone noticed I was alone.

No one looked or passed judgment, so I dug in. I’m not sure if it was because I was in an authentic Italian restaurant or because I was dining alone, but this meal was surprisingly the best one I had eaten in Florence. Why did it take me twenty years and a four month trip abroad to eat by myself?

Traveling alone can be nervewracking. Not only are you by yourself in a foreign place, you’re subject to constant FOMO- the fear of missing out. It’s hard to escape the social pressure of feeling like you need to post pictures and brag about all your crazy, fabulous adventures. In the digital world we live in, we crave the ability to share everything just so we can show our friends that we are not by ourselves.

While jet setting around the world completely solo can be daunting, there are other ways that being alone can help you become in tune with yourself. Food writer and founder of Instagram account @DiningwithSkyler, Skyler Bouchard found her independence in college and gained the confidence to build her brand after her personal experiences dining alone.

Bouchard graduated from New York University in 2015 with a journalism degree, but she started her website Food by Skyler in 2012.

She began building content for her website by creating a web series called “Table for One,” in which she recorded episodes by placing her professional camera in the seat across from her and filming her reactions. “At first I felt like an idiot,” Bouchard said. “People would look at me, wondering why I was alone, especially on the weekends or at sit-down restaurants. People might have even called the police because it looked so bizarre.”

Bouchard said she has been asked to sit at the bar when dining alone because it was “inconvenient” for the restaurant. “The waiter would not let me sit at a table, because I was alone,” Bouchard said. “I called him out and told him that he was being rude. I wanted to treat myself, by choice.”

It was not until Bouchard started dining alone to build content that eating by herself became a ritual, even after she started dating her boyfriend. “It was liberating,” Bouchard said. “There is a stigma around going out to eat alone, and honestly the first time I did it, I was so embarrassed. I got butterflies.

Later on, I learned that judgment is very ephemeral.”

After dining out more, Bouchard got over her nerves. “Dining out alone was something that helped me build a relationship with myself, especially during college, when you really begin to understand yourself better,” Bouchard said.

Dining alone can be the first step to building confidence, as it was for Bouchard. But taking the leap to travel alone can foster independence on a larger scale.

Charlotte Macchia, a junior at SU studying abroad in Florence, distinctly remembers how she she gained her independence abroad. Instead of traveling with friends, Macchia decided to explore

Barcelona alone. “I let myself wander with a purpose,” Macchia said.

Even though she disconnected from social media and technology during her days alone, Macchia listened to music to fill the silence.

“I became more aware of my surroundings and really got to think,” Macchia said. “No one else was rushing me, and I got to see and do everything I wanted to.”

When Macchia arrived back in Florence the following Sunday, she noticed a change in her attitude. “I became more confident in my travel skills, without help from anyone else,” she said. “I decided to ditch my Google Maps and just explore.”

Next time you’re itching for a travel buddy, remind yourself how resourceful and independent you are. You can walk into a cafe and enjoy the best meal of your life, or simply take a walk down a cobblestone street. Bring a book or just sit and people-watch; traveling alone doesn’t have to leave you lonely.

Adding different superfoods is one of the easiest ways to do this.

SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM Nothing is more iconic than having an ice cream at the end of a summer day. Everyone has their favorite place and their favorite flavor, but why not save a little money and eat healthier by making your own popsicles at home this summer? Try freezing vanilla yogurt which is full of healthy probiotics that help out your gut. Add in honey and your favorite berries in a popsicle mold for a treat that’s sweet for your wallet and your health.

Rice is one of the easiest and most versatile foods to use in your kitchen. Everyone’s go-to meal after a long day is chicken and veggies over rice. It is classic, healthy and easy, making it a crowd favorite. A healthier alternative to rice is quinoa, an ancient grain rich in protein and fiber. Leaving you more satisfied, quinoa helps you resist sugary temptations or a salty snack an hour after your meal.

Even though Caesar salads are topped with creamy dressing, cheese and croutons, they are, somehow, still considered to be a salad. Upgrade your meal without compromising the taste by replacing the iceberg lettuce with kale. This leafy green is chock full of minerals and vitamins and will help your body digest food better.

Going the Distance

mma Wishnow, 21, hears nothing but her heartbeat pounding in her chest.

Her feet no longer feel like a part of her body, and her legs almost collapse under the weight of her tiny tinfoil blanket.

Suddenly, all of her pain is relieved by an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, washing over her as she crosses the finish line of her first half marathon.

Walking over to the cheering section, she sees her friends and family holding up signs with her name on them. As she approaches her loved ones, a shiny, new medal dangles from her neck. Even with all these people surrounding her, Emma knows that everything she achieved, every goal she met and every training session she planned all came down to her own ambition and independence.

As a junior at Syracuse University, Wishnow has run four half marathons to date. “Even though running is an individual sport, I was able to find a way to be competitive with myself by trying to reach new personal records in each race and pushing myself harder in every race I run,” Wishnow said. Despite the stress and the setbacks that she must face in training, Wishnow says that there is something profoundly rewarding about being solely responsible for her own success.

As a seasoned marathoner, she knows it’s important to acknowledge your own accomplishments. “Everything I achieved was for me and because of me.”

No stranger to proving herself on the course, senior Ciara Harrington has participated in two Syracuse city half marathons over the past two years. Harrington, 22, says running taught her how to embrace challenges while also enjoying herself – half the fun is seeing how far you’ve come.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Literally.

for, she wouldn’t have felt the same sense of accomplishment. Harrington says she ran her first half marathon during the toughest months of her college career. “I was really struggling and needed something that I could succeed at. I think being able to set that goal and achieve it was exactly what I needed; I was able to believe in myself a little more again,” said Harrington.

“Everything I achieved was for me and because of me.”

In this way, running a marathon is more than just putting one foot in front of the other for miles on end. It’s also a healthy way to spend alone time, release tension, and focus on bettering yourself. Wishnow says running has always been very therapeutic, and the intense training is a great way for her to relieve stress from everyday struggles. “I feel empowered in a way that’s more than just about physically building muscle,” said Wishnow.

Back up for just a second. You can’t just compete in a marathon without months of preparation. Running a marathon, or a half marathon, takes incredible commitment, discipline and motivation. The Road Runners Club of America, a national association of organizations dedicated to growing the sport of running, suggests to begin by setting goals and making a schedule. There is a ten week marathon training program that’s very popular among avid runners, but to properly tackle a marathon as a beginner, you need four to six months of distance and speed training. You should also make major adjustments to your diet to compensate for the significant amount of exercise you’ll be doing.

Although Wishnow trains hard in preparation for running half

marathons, she would have to train even harder if not for her participation in cross country and track during her high school years.

Harrington had a different approach: “I would try to run long distances three times a week when I was training, but it was in the winter, when the sidewalks were icy and it was freezing outside.” When she realized two days before her race that she had only run distances of five miles in preparation, Harrington said, “I knew I really hadn’t trained enough, which was scary, so I ran eight miles two days before just to see if I could do it.”

All of these radical changes to your routine will put an immense amount of strain on you not only physically, but also mentally. The RRCA emphasizes the importance of balancing the pressures of the sport with the rewards and not punishing yourself when you hit roadblocks.

Wishnow said, “The stress of training is definitely worth it. Seeing the results of training hard sort of ignited a fire in me, and meeting goals is pretty addicting.”

Despite all the independence and self-reliance that comes with marathoning, a strong support system is an integral part of this rigorous sport. Harrington says that without a little outside motivation, she would have had a much harder time crossing the finish line. Reporting her training progress to her mom and running with friends has bolstered her motivation and renewed her dedication. Even if you’re the only one who can pick yourself up after you fall, it’s empowering to know people believe in your goals. You might run the race alone, but there’s nothing like a group hug and celebratory hot chocolate after you’ve run your body into the ground.

Things I Wish I Knew as a Rookie Runner: Achilles tendonitis: If you run too far or too fast after being inactive for a long time, you risk shortening/tightening the tendon in your heel. Ease yourself into training to avoid injuries.

Chafing: If your shirt or sports bra isn’t the proper material or fabric, three hours of running in the climate of your race could lead to extreme chafing and even bleeding.

Sneakers: If your shoes are too small, or if your marathon course is downhill, your toes are going to be slamming into your sneaks the whole time. You can kiss your cute pedicure goodbye!

Hitting the Wall: This is when your body’s energy levels become depleted and exhaustion takes over. It’s usually two-thirds of the way into a race, but it can be prevented with proper nutrition to refuel. Can anyone say carbo-load?

Let’s take a moment to recognize who fuels this addiction. There are my besties, my classmates and my friends of friends. Then there are those people I have never met in my life. They may go to Syracuse; they may go to a school across the country. And I haven’t even gotten to the celebrities and models yet

Founded in 2010, Instagram is considered to be the most detrimental social media outlet to mental health and wellbeing, RSPH reported. Scrolling through Instagram exposes you to an unlimited amount of highlight reels. “It is human nature to make social comparisons. But the danger with forming self-evaluations by comparing one’s realistic self to the idealized online lives of others is that it is almost impossible to measure up,” neuropsychologist Dr. Tracy Zelenetz says.

Specifically among females, there is an unspoken desire to impress others by posting perfect pictures. In turn, they tend to subconsciously measure their

self-worth based on the amount of likes received on filtered, retouched images. When Alyssa Winderlich, a 21-year-old student at the University of South Carolina, posts a photo on Instagram, her eyes remain glued to her phone. “I pay attention to my minute-to-like ratio,” Winderlich says. “I feel pressure to post a perfect photo so I get enough likes. If it doesn’t get enough likes, the photo probably wasn’t ‘Insta-worthy.’” In such cases, Winderlich sometimes deletes the post.

In a digitally dependent world, it is hard remain unphased by Instagram, but there are ways to escape the negative effects without taking a total tech detox.

Remind yourself that no one is as happy and successful as they appear to be on Insta.

GET THE LOOK Start by adding strings into your hair while you braid your hair. When you get to the bottom, tie the braid place to secure it.

When choosing eyeshadows, the goal is to create a smoky earth-toned look. Use a rich color as a base. Stick to colors with orange, purple and even red tones. Build dimension on your eyelids by layering it with darker shadows for shading. Apply a little bit of a medium bronze shadow on your undereye. Then, apply mascara and eyeliner.

TIP: Since you are using dark eyeshadows, use eyeliner very sparingly.

Be daring, and play with a darker lip to tie everything together.

earing her pajamas, Holly Taylor, 20, sits on her bed staring thoughtfully at her laptop. The bright screen illuminates her dark purple bedroom.

Even though Taylor has to wake up early for work, she is determined to finish her graphic design homework before she catches up on sleep. While Taylor is no stranger to the struggles of college life, she is far from the ordinary university girl.

Taylor currently stars as Paige Jennings on the hit FX show, The Americans. She has starred in the series since she was 13 years old, casted as the daughter of two undercover KGB agents in the 1980’s. On the show, Paige is portrayed as being mature for her age, much like Taylor herself.

“Having a career and being paid since I was so young has always made me feel older. I just turned 20 in October, and it’s the most awkward age. I’m not a teenager anymore, but I’m not 21. I’m not fully an adult,” Taylor said. Before The Americans, Taylor appeared in the broadway show Billy Elliot as ballet dancer Sharon Percy for two years, showing off her song and dance skills.

As The Americans airs its final season in the Spring of 2018, Taylor is looking forward to the next chapter of her life. Although she is keeping her options open,

“The biggest challenge for me right now is figuring out what I want to do after The Americans, because once it wraps up, I will be jobless. I’ll have to find something else to do, but it’s been pretty hard figuring out how to go to college while also pursuing my acting career,” Taylor said. Taylor spent her freshman and sophomore years studying through Penn State’s online program, but she recently decided to transfer to Kean University in New York for her junior year as a graphic design and interactive advertising major.

“Art is one of my passions, and I didn’t want to just have a business desk-job degree. I wanted to do something that’s logical and creative. I’m enjoying acting right now, but I don’t know if I’ll want to do it forever. I want to go to school, so I have a back-up plan.” Taylor hopes to land a comedy series for her next big project to diversify her acting experience.

The next morning, Taylor puts on her light beige trench coat before leaving for work. On filming days, she gets picked up at 4:30 a.m. to head to the set of The Americans in Brooklyn. Upon arrival, she gets her hair and makeup done before rehearsals. Shooting usually wraps at around 6 p.m., but as the week goes on, work nights get later and later. On any given

Friday, shooting tends to begin at 5 p.m. and goes until 5 a.m. the next morning.

Even when she is not on set, Taylor still sets her alarm clock for an early wake up. “This Monday, I have a fitting. I’ll probably be sad that I’m awake at 7:30 on a Monday. Once I get to the city, my stylist will have a bunch of looks pulled for events I have coming up. There’ll be a tailor there so that they can adjust everything if it doesn’t fit,” Taylor said. On top of getting styled for events, Taylor also works with different stylists for photoshoots for the show as well as for magazine features.

“I don’t usually get to keep the clothes I wear for photoshoots, but they let me have a coat that I wore on The Americans.”

“I think it’s hard to find friends in the industry, because I live such a separate life from it.”

After the fitting, Taylor will head to a local Starbucks to do a interview for The Wrap over the phone. Then, she will head to another studio to re-record audio and dialogue for various episodes of The Americans.

“I’ll just have to re-record maybe two episodes that day, so it could just be three lines or a laugh, something silly like that. Other times, it can be three pages of full conversation that I have to re-do.”

Finishing up at the studio after sunset, she will finally head back home to Wayne, New Jersey.

“When everyone’s little, everybody wants to be a famous actor or singer, but nobody ever thinks that you’re actually going to make it.”

Despite numerous obstacles and cynics, Taylor has been dancing to the beat of her own song for as long as she can remember. Taylor recalled, “I lost friends in middle school trying to pursue this career. When everyone’s little, everybody wants to be a famous actor or singer, but nobody ever thinks that you’re actually going to make it. A lot of people doubted me. I might’ve even doubted myself.” Finding friends in Hollywood is not a priority to Taylor. Instead, she likes to hang out with most of her friends from home when they return from school on breaks. “I think it’s hard to find friends in the industry, because I live such a separate life from it, living in New Jersey and going to regular school. When I go to L.A. and meet people my age, I feel like they have different interests. Their lives really revolve around acting, and mine doesn’t as much, so it can be hard to find common ground,” Taylor said.

Returning to her house, Taylor is finally able to decompress from

the day to enjoy some alone time.

“My bedroom is my favorite place in the world,” Taylor said. “I look forward to going back to it every night. If I want take time for myself, I’ll usually paint or draw in a sketchbook, or I’ll search for new music. Sometimes I meditate too, because I find that it’s really beneficial when I’m trying to connect with myself more.” In her downtime, Taylor also volunteers at her local animal shelter caring for stray dogs and cats. Working at the shelter has helped Taylor look to the future, although she is more focused on current goals. “I really don’t look that far ahead. But when I’m older, I want to have a sanctuary where I rescue animals and hire unemployed veterans to work there. I was really lonely for a while, and all my friends went away to school, so the shelter was my peaceful place. I could take care of all these animals that reciprocate the love I give them.

It was so therapeutic.” Taylor’s older brother served in the Marine Corps, inspiring her goal to employ veterans.

With another productive day behind her, Taylor reflects on how she is able to strike a balance between work and school. She credits her strong work ethic and her ability to be independent. “I have a career set up for myself, and I’m a responsible student. I’m independent in the sense that I can be a good friend to myself and take care of my wellbeing without being selfish. And while I know that having other people around is beneficial, I don’t need to rely on them,” said Taylor. “I’m really proud of where I am now.”

Q&A Q: What is it like behind the scenes of the Americans?

A: It’s too good to be true. The cast is uber kind, generous and respectful to every single person in every job on set. Even the leads of this show will take care of the guys who take out the trash, like they’re exactly the same. It’s been really nice to grow up in that environment, to see people who are super successful treat people with kindness and respect no matter where they are in life.

Q: What is one thing you never leave the house without?

A: Breakfast! I always have to have that before I leave the house. If I don’t have breakfast, I’ll probably shrivel up and die on the spot. Every morning, I go downstairs and make myself bacon and toast. Then, I feed my cat some bacon before I go upstairs to get ready for the day.

Q: What book are you reading right now?

A: I recently started The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s pretty good. I’ve also been reading The Magic Mala by Bob Olson. I collect mala beads and other healing crystals. The mala beads are for love, warmth, and welcoming people into your life. I carry them around with me sometimes, but most of them are in my room.

Q: What are you watching on TV right now?

A: My favorite movie is Donnie Darko, and I love watching the Office.

I’ve watched it so many times, I can quote it.

HOOKUPS BAD BOYS

I was a sophomore living on South Campus, aka athlete central. I was bored one night, so I decided to have a little fun. I went onto Tinder to hit up this athlete that I had matched with a couple weeks back. He ended up coming over, and he was even cuter than he was in his pictures. We were really hitting it off, so we started hooking up. All of a sudden, I heard a knock on my door. I assumed that it was my roommate coming back for the night. I looked through the peephole and saw a DPS officer standing at the door. The officer said he was looking for this guy who was in my apartment. When the guy went to the door, the officer abruptly handcuffed him and took him into the car. I’ve always been into bad boys, but I guess there is such a thing as too bad.

DYSFUNCTIONAL DILEMMA

I was at a frat party my freshman year when I saw was this cute guy in the house who was friends with a lot of my friends. We began talking, and things started to pick up after we had a couple of drinks. He was super cool and nice, so we stayed flirting for the whole night.

He didn’t live in the house, so he asked me if I wanted to go over to his dorm. I was down, so we left the frat and walked over. When we got there, things started getting hot and heavy. We got into his bed, and started making out.

After a couple minutes, I realized he wasn’t getting hard. Like at all. Before I could even say anything, he got up and started freaking out. Out of nowhere, he blurted out that he had recently gotten out of a long relationship with his ex, and he thought it could be the reason why he couldn’t get hard. He started talking louder and louder, obviously panicking.

I drunkenly started crying, and I left. We never did end up hooking up. It’s called whiskey dick, idiot.

BLOODY HELL

During the fall semester of my sophomore year, I went a little crazy. I’ve never been the type to go up to random guys and start conversations, but I decided to take a chance at a party one night. I had some drinks in me, and I was ready to finally go after a guy who I’d been crushing on for weeks. After talking for awhile, one thing led to another, and we decided to go back to my room. Things escalated quickly, and we started taking our clothes off. About 15 minutes in, I took a break from kissing him and went to change the song. Suddenly, I felt something wet land on my chest.

Assuming it was just his sweat, I wiped it off. I brought my hand back to my phone to then realize it was blood. He started profusely bleeding out of his nose. I was very okay with stopping and letting him go home embarrassed, but he had a very different idea. He twisted up a tissue, stuck it in his nose and continued to have sex with me.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT

It was a snowy week before winter break.

My roommate was headed home early, so she left to catch her flight. A guy that I had been hooking up with hit me up, so I told him to come over. When he got to my place, we started hooking up. In the middle of it, my door swung open. My roommate, who was supposed to be back home hundreds of miles away, walked in and saw us butt naked on my bed. She yelled ‘Sorry!’ before sprinting out of the room. We stopped hooking up, and I quickly threw my clothes on. Mortified, I searched for her throughout the dorm to tell her it was okay to come in. Apparently something had gone wrong at the airport, and she missed her flight.

When she and I got back to my room, the guy awkwardly introduced himself before leaving. It was super uncomfortable. I still talk to and occasionally hook up with the same guy, so I suppose it was no harm, no foul.

HELL LETS GET PHYSICAL

I was hooking up with a boy who lived on my floor first semester freshman year. On our way back from Harry’s one night, we ended up having sex on the quad. He had to go to his sports house afterwards, so I went back to the dorm for the rest of the night and hung out with just his roommate. The roommate could barely stand, so I carried him upstairs. At around 4 a.m., he was sprinting down the hallway shirtless, belligerently banging on every door. I tried to tell him that he needed to calm down.But, the hammered kid tried to swing at me. I took matters into my own hands and punched him square in the face. My guy friends, who came to see what was going on, promptly held me back and locked me in my room. They proceeded to beat up the kid who started to yell disgusting things at me. He was then taken to the hospital after vomiting and crying in his room. The next morning, I was looking through my peephole and I saw the boy and his family carrying boxes down the hallway. I immediately called the guy I was hooking up with and he told me that his roommate had been kicked out of school for the semester.
