I was a student at UCM (the Isle of Man College as it was known then) and look back with extremely fond memories at the experience I had, the friendships I made and how it helped me carve my path.

If you’re looking for some extra support with academic work, our team in the Academic Support Centre (ASC) is here to help. Our team is friendly, approachable and knowledgeable.

We offer one-to-one or small group support in a relaxed environment in areas such as:

• study skills (essay planning and research techniques)

• skills building in areas such as spelling, algebra, percentages and punctuation

• personal statements for UCAS applications

Fees and Funding

The cost of each course is shown on the course page on the website. If you are under the age of 18 on the 1st of September preceding the start of a full-time course, you will be funded by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture and you will not be charged the fees.

DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN

Level 2

1 year, full time

This course will provide you with an introduction to art and design, enabling you to reengage with education and acquire the requisite knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment in the creative industries.

EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN

Level 3

The course has been designed to provide you with a strong foundation for progressing to a broad range of creative subjects at university or employment. It provides you with a vital bridge between school and university, helping you to become a more independent thinker and practitioner.

FOUNDATION IN ART & DESIGN

These are pivotal courses which provide a transition from general education to specialist art and design education, enabling you to make an informed decision when applying to higher education or seeking employment within a related industry.

DIPLOMA IN CREATIVE MEDIA, PRODUCTION & TECHNOLOGY

This UAL course offers students a broad, exploratory experience, helping them to understand the media industry and its professional demands. This qualification prepares students for real-world sector expectations and introduces them to various career pathways within the media field.

EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN CREATIVE MEDIA, PRODUCTION & TECHNOLOGY

SPORTS INDUSTRY SKILLS (leading on Children’s Sports activities)

Level 2

This course is for learners who have a passion for sports coaching. Students will learn how to lead children’s sports activities through both theory and practical based learning, and will undertake work placements.

EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN SPORT

Level 3

2 years, full time

The course will suit those wishing to develop their sporting talent alongside their academic studies as well as those who love sport and would like a career in the Sports Industry within non-playing/ competition roles.

Passionate sportsman, Connor Prescott, began his studies at UCM with the Level 2 Sports Industry Skills course, and has now progressed to graduate from the Sports Coaching Degree Programme, with his sights set on coaching in the states one day.

NVQ in Food Preparation and Cooking and NVQ in Food and Beverage Service

In this course you will explore food production and taste profiles through basic cooking and preparation techniques while developing the skills to work front of house. It is a practical course where you will develop your skills within the College production kitchen and bakery and restaurant to build and develop your skills and to enable you to seek employment in the industry or progress to the NVQ Level 2 qualifications.

This course is for those with basic kitchen and restaurant skills who want to progress in their career by achieving a nationally recognised qualification. The focus is on developing skills in a commercial kitchen and bakery and busy restaurant. It is an ideal course if you are looking to advance in this exciting and dynamic sector.

NVQ Diploma in PROFESSIONAL COOKERY

You will develop your previous knowledge, understanding and skills to become a proficient chef working in a professional environment. You will learn and develop a high standard of cookery skills, processes and menu design. In addition you will cover health, hygiene, safety and security of the working environment and develop productive working relationships with colleagues.

This course is for those employed within a professional kitchen who wish to develop their basic kitchen and restaurant skills to progress in their career by achieving a nationally recognised qualification. The focus is on developing skills in your place of work and within the UCM commercial kitchen. It is an ideal course if you are looking to advance in this exciting and dynamic sector.

This is for those who hold a level 2 professional cookery qualification who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills to progress in the career or to specialise in an area in which they have a particular strength or passion such as Professional Cookery or Patisserie & Confectionary.

Chef Tyler Livesey started out in the kitchen as a kitchen porter. After picking up some basic food preparation skills by watching chefs at work, he decided to formally learn and gain the qualifications he needed to become a chef by undertaking the Catering & Hospitality course (Level 1, 2 and 3).

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a barber including: health and safety; client consultation; shampooing and conditioning hair; basic hair cuts; blowdry and finishing and cutting facial hair to shape.

This qualification is for stylists who have completed a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification and gained a minimum of 1 year’s industry experience working full time in a salon. The course includes Health, Safety and Welfare, second fix flouring and roofing, second fixing operations, principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work, first fix roofing and stairs, second fixing double doors and mouldings, and setting up and using fixed and transportable machinery.

The course includes safe working practices, installing and maintaining domestic hot water systems, domestic above ground drainage, and professional standards.

Chris Hardisty’s Success Story

It has been an eventful journey, from bricklayer to Building Control Officer for Chris Hardisty, and yet he shows no signs of stopping. After a few years of completing the bricklaying course with us he returned to study the Construction & the Built Environment (Level 3) then he progressed to the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction & the Built Environment.

The course includes health and safety, fundamental principles and requirements of environmental technology systems, plumbing system installation planning, complex cold water systems, domestic hot water, sanitation and drainage systems, central heating systems, and domestic gas principles.

The Level 2 part time qualification is aimed at engineering apprentices from a local industry and is designed to provide them with knowledge and practical understanding of a broad range of engineering activities.

DIPLOMA IN MECHANICAL MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING

Aimed at candidates working in the engineering industry and who already hold the Level 2 qualification or have relevant experience.

Aimed at those who wish to progress to a level 3 full time qualification or an engineering apprenticeship from local industry and is designed to provide them with a practical understanding of a broad range of engineering activities.

Foundation DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING WITH ENHANCED PRACTICAL SKILLS TRAINING Level 3

The OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Engineering Diploma in Engineering qualification will develop skills and knowledge required by local engineering industries.

FOUNDATION DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (General enfineering)

Level 3

This qualification is aimed at apprentices working in the Engineering industry that wish to develop their skills and knowledge.

Extended Diploma in Engineering Level 3

2 years, full time

This qualification will develop skills and knowledge for those wishing to find employment in the Island’s engineering industries or for progression on to a degree in higher education. The 18-unit qualification is delivered over two years which is equivalent to 3 A Levels (UCAS points 48-168). Core subjects include Maths, Science and Mechanical design.

BTEC HNC IN ENGINEERING (GENERAL ENGINEERING) Level 4

2 years, part time

The course is intended for those persons who are currently employed in engineering and wanting to progress their industrial careers, or for those wishing to continue with their studies to HND/degree level.
