Thanks to the support of various patrons, it has been possible to achieve the goals of various projects that have benefited society. The Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia has been repeatedly renovated and arranged to make it more pleasant for the public. Many new devices have been purchased and built, for instance, to help speed up the diagnosis of sepsis, thus increasing the possibility of people to survive. Purchased and published books and magazines give students the opportunity to seek wisdom. Patron support for student scholarships, competitions and the creation of new ideas helps to reach new heights. Thanks for this support!


RENOVATION

WORKS TO IMPROVE INFRASTRUCTURE About the project: In 2013 and 2014, the central part of the garden was restored, as well as part of the rhododendron, perennial and fern plantations were planted. The old wooden fence was replaced with metal, the surroundings around the pond were cleaned. In 2015, the renovation works were continued in the garden arboretum, which is the only place in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia with a hollow and hilly terrain which adds extra appeal to the exhibits. In 2016, walkways were created, rhododendron plantations in the area of 5500 m2 were renovated. Major patrons: Ināra and Boriss Teterevi

About the project: For 12 years now, JTI has been supporting UL seniors, giving them the opportunity to attend various excursions, theater performances, and other cultural events 4-5 times a year. The project gives seniors the opportunity to learn the latest technologies in various courses.

BASKETBALL SUPPORTS DILIGENT STUDENTS About the project: Since 2008, 9 diligent students have been awarded scholarships every year to play basketball in the Latvian-Estonian league as part of the UL team, for instance, Kristaps Dargas and Jean Peiner. SITE FOR EXPERIMENTAL CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS AT

UL BD

About the project: The project developed solutions for external enclosing structures suitable for Latvia's climatic conditions, mainly made of local raw materials, which allowed to ensure conditions of thermal comfort in rooms with low energy consumption. A test site with five special buildings was established in the Botanical Garden. Building structures, solutions, raw materials and processes suitable for the climatic conditions of Latvia were used and tested in their construction. TEAMS IN WORLD PROGRAMMING GAMES

About the project: The final of the world's most prestigious and oldest student team programming competition (ICPC) took place in Moscow, where the team of the University of Latvia (UL) represented Latvia. The team performed well in the competition and took 26th place (shared 24th place) in the competition of 117 strongest teams in the world. Teams have been participating in programming games since 2012.

TEAMS IN WORLD COURT GAMES About the project:

Mock trials have been an essential part of the study process at the Faculty of Law since 2010. Only by staging a trial and preparing procedural documents law students acquire the skills and competencies that every lawyer needs. Students have participated in the competition several times, winning 1st place in Oxford, 36th, 57th place in Washington.

PLANETARIUM

PILOT PROJECT About the project: A projection system was created, with the help of which regular planetarium shows are shown to the visitors of the University of Latvia Museum, using a realistic depiction of the starry sky and video scenes. OF HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY RESEARCH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF About the project: HISTORICAL SCIENCE Due to the project activities, high-quality historical science in Latvia has been supported and developed. The understanding of the Latvian society about the importance of historical issues in the life of the Latvian state and society is being increased and strengthened. The project supports the study of history at the University of Latvia and the publication of research work of scientists attracted by the University of Latvia. Supporting research, publishing new books and providing related trips to foreign archives for the book preparation, as well as sponsoring visits to foreign conferences for Latvian scientists. A NEW DEVICE FOR FASTER DIAGNOSIS OF SEPSIS CREATED BY

About the project: The device saves lives! The speed has improved drastically comparing to the previous one. Participants of the project received 2.5 million euro from the European Union fund after the implementation. OF EQUIPMENT About the project: In order to produce a quality work, researchers require professional equipment. Some of the recently purchased equipment: Micro-seismic research equipment, Annealing oven, Eye movement recorder, state-of-the-art ultrasonography of the heart, 3D printer, crystal growth equipment, etc.

FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN MEDICINE AND NATURAL SCIENCES About the project: The patron annually supports 5 new doctoral students in medicine and natural sciences by awarding them scholarships for the entire study period - 3 years. THE MINERAL

IS TURNED INTO THE RAW MATERIAL About the project: At the beginning of 2016, a pilot project was launched at the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences of the University of Latvia to identify Latvian paint deposits, create pigment and oil paints, and high-quality paints from Latvia's natural minerals - Okera. HEALTHY" About the project: Type 2 diabetes is a very common disease in the community, affecting every 11th adult. During the project, a "Virtual Trainer" was developed - an application with a sensor that helps to perform interval training, performs measurements and adjusts future workouts, which improve people's well-being.

«EYES

ARE SCARED READING» About the project: Researchers in the Department of Optometry and Vision Science are developing an innovative approach to detect reading disorders in children using a diagnostic method for the assessment of fine eye movements. Researchers are evaluating the functioning of the pediatric oculomotor system and its relationship with reading skills. PROGRAMMING About the project: Docent and researcher Ivars Driķis created a teaching aid for learning the basic principles of programming. During the implementation of the project, 100 copies of the study material were made. The set of teaching aids consists of a microcomputer, various modules and wires. The kits are used by pupils and students who do not engage in programming on a daily basis. Major patrons: SIA «Mikrotīkls» Amount donated: 8 800 euros


UL BOTANICAL GARDEN ALUMNI

TRAIL About the project: The starting point of the graduate trail - a shadow garden. A shadow garden lattice walkway winds for 150m through the garden. The alumni trail changes its character during its entire length from shady to bright sunlit. The Alumni Trail is a meeting place in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia, which consists of various freely accessible environmental and improvement objects. REDUCTION

OF CARDIOVASCULAR MORTALITY About the project: The project helped reduce the risk for patients with cardiovascular disease. It is now possible to diagnose heart failure much faster than before, resulting in prolonging patient life and improving its quality. Major patrons:

IMPROVING

THE REMOVE STUDY PROCESS

About the project:

Eight laptops, 16 webcams and 32 iOLab devices equipped with a large number of different sensors were purchased for the practice of the Physics Department of UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry. The new technical equipment made it possible not only to perform measurements remotely and export the data to a computer, but also to perform data analysis and other manipulations of the obtained data. Using the purchased equipment, students had the opportunity to develop laboratory work at their place of residence. Major patrons: SIA «Mikrotīkls» Project manager:

OF THE STELLAR GLOBE About the project:

The globe, which is at least 86 years old, has been crumbling for a long time, the paint is shedding, and in many places the sphere of stars is already empty. GENERATION OF ULTRASONOSCOPES FOR THE HEART About the project: The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia in cooperation with Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital received the latest generation of ultrasonoscopes, thus providing an opportunity for young physicians to learn the most innovative methods in patient care. The equipment is located both in the hospital admission department and at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia. SCIENCES

About the project:

Cognitive sciences is an interdisciplinary field of research that studies the processes of the psyche, language, cognition, consciousness and perception and their interactions. The most important activities: 13th, 14th and 15th symposia on different perceptions. Yearbook: Spens’ article with comment. Unique research has been conducted on the figural perception and assignment of meaning. Presentations at highlevel conferences, where theses are published in CSS proceedings, Cognitive Processing special edition. TO

ANTARCTICA About the project: Within two months, three researchers went on an Antarctic expedition. Every day they worked for 12 hours, as a result of which researchers collected 300 kg of various samples and performed field measurements, these materials are still used by students and researchers of the Faculties of Medicine, Geography and Earth Sciences, Biology and Chemistry of the University of Latvia.
