Styrian Armoury 1 The largest preserved armoury in the world is among the most popular tourist attractions in Graz and reminds us of a conflict-ridden chapter in Styrian history.

The Styrian Armoury was created in turbulent times: from the 15th to the 18th century, the lives of people living here were shaped by constant military conflicts with Hungarian rebels and the Ottoman Empire.

Built in 1642–44, the armoury served for around 100 years as the ‘central arsenal’ for simple infantrymen and soldiers on horseback. Today it is both a memorial and museum: some 32,000 articles of war are on display in the Styrian Armoury in their historical layout.

Indeed, the Kunsthaus is already an attraction by its appearance alone, yet it’s worth getting to know its inner life, too: in its ‘Spaces’, exhibitions can be seen with international contemporary art that tackle social issues and global trends. The luminous BIX facade communicates towards the River Mur and the inner city, while the museum’s ‘Needle’ is a popular viewing platform.

This year, artistic approaches to the world of work will be on display, as will a solo exhibition of the artist Azra Aksamija, who is known for her socially critically works. A further major project is devoted to cultural phenomena that result from asymmetrical power structures, (neo-)colonial relations and migration

This internationally award-winning museum invites visitors to take a historical tour through Styria from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Folk Life Museum at the Paulustor

The museum’s exhibitions tell of differing living environments and of social and cultural change.

The ways in which Styria has developed over the last 900 years can be explored in the show 100 x Styria. The innovative exhibition Why? attempts to fathom the fascination and grip that the National Socialist regime held over people. The Display Depot showcases the variety of the Cultural Historical and Multimedia Collections.

The civil war that played out on the streets of Austria in 1934 is also the occasion for the museum to reflect on the momentous events of 90 years ago.

To mark the centenary of the death of Konrad Mautner, the Folk Life Museum is holding the first-ever dedicated exhibition to the passionate folklorist, researcher and collector.

Thousands of photographs owned by the Mautner family that were taken from the 1890s onwards form the starting point.

The exhibition is also on display in the Bad Ischl City Museum from July 18th onwards as a project of the ‘Cultural Capital of Europe Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024’.

In 2024 a new exhibition based on the Blaschka Photo Archive engages with the social perspective on women’s work between 1950 and 1970 – which forms of work were photographed, which remained hidden from view?

To mark the centenary year ‘100 years of Radio in Austria’, a show is dedicated to the history of radio as it evolved from a scientific experiment to a product suitable for the masses.

Schloss Eggenberg 4 The UNESCO World Heritage Site Schloss Eggenberg invites you to take various trips through time: from the highly symbolic architecture of the princely residence to the art treasures of the Alte Galerie and the sparkling Coin Cabinet, through to the mysterious traces of life found in the Archaeology Museum.

The architecture of the former prince’s residence stands for a worldview in which harmony rules through order. 24 baroque state rooms fascinate us with their original decorations from the 17th and 18th century, more than 500 ceiling paintings, and a sensation from Japan.

The Schloss is surrounded by a picturesque landscaped park, one of the most precious protected historical gardens in Styria.

Alte Galerie 4 Experience the most valuable collection of Old Masters in Styria in 22 themed rooms. The Alte Galerie presents masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century, including masterpieces by Jan and Pieter Brueghel, Bartholomäus Spranger, Lukas Cranach, Jan Steen or Pieter Claesz. In 2024, the focus is on animal remains found in Flavia Solva: what animals were found in Styria during the Roman Period and which were eaten?

Part of the Neue Galerie Graz, the BRUSEUM is dedicated to the life and work of Günter Brus and also shows works by artists who have shaped and accompanied him. Thus, new exhibitions allow viewers to trace Brus’ development from an actionist artist to a ‘picture-poet’, including the original manuscript of the Irrwisch (‘A Crazy Bundle’). There is also an opportunity to become familiar with the fascinating drawings of Hermann Nitsch.

Hunting Museum 7 Schloss Stainz In Austria’s largest Hunting Museum, the cultural phenomenon of hunting can be explored, as can nature in all its diversity.

With its historical weapons, splendid artworks and handicraft objects, as well as many opportunities to learn more about animals in the wild and their habitats, the Hunting Museum appeals not only to hunters. The highly varied exhibition encourages you to explore hunting from historical, sociological and philosophical perspectives, illustrating not least of all the influences that Archduke Johann left on hunting in Styria.

Museums in Schloss Stainz 7 Embedded in the picturesque West Styrian landscape, Schloss Stainz is a popular destination for excursions. The history of the former Augustinian monastery reaches back to the 13th century. In 1840, Archduke Johann acquired the castle, which is still owned by his descendants today. Archduke Johann’s visions have left their mark on the museums in Schloss Stainz, too: the Hunting Museum, Agriculture Museum and new Erzherzog Johann Museum form a cultural centre for themes closely related to this man’s achievements.

Agriculture Museum Schloss Stainz

A new museum with many original objects dedicated to the eventful life of Archduke Johann.

The Agriculture Museum is devoted to Styria’s agricultural and forest economies.

Archduke Johann was fascinated by the scientific and technical innovations of his time and started numerous civil-society initiatives in 19th century Styria that are still in effect today. The new Erzherzog Johann Museum invites visitors to become familiar with this eventful ‘life for progress’ – with many original objects, including artworks, art-historical exhibits, and documents not yet shown to date.

The Agriculture Museum surveys peasant life from the pre-industrial era up to the agricultural challenges of the modern day. The theme of food occupies a central place here, as do the progressive ideas of Archduke Johann who played a key role in sustainably modernizing Styrian agriculture in the technical sense.

Schloss Trautenfels excites visitors with exhibitions on the cultural and natural history of the Styrian Ennstal and Ausseerland – and a fantastic view!

In the Landscape Museum in Schloss Trautenfels, themes of regional culture and nature blend into a multi-faceted kaleidoscope. Schloss Trautenfels, whose history reaches back to the 13th century, surprises with architectural highlights from different eras, too.

A new special exhibition presents regionally significant themes in their European and global context, showing by means of a variety of objects what stories the Ennstal and the Liezen district have to tell. Topics here include ‘Geology as the foundation of agriculture’, as well as ‘Habitats for Humans 25 and Animals in Climate Change’, ‘Immaterial Cultural Heritage’, ‘Tourism’, ‘Health’, ‘100 Years of Radio’, and much more besides! Humans and their manifestations of life always lie at the core of these subjects.

A walk through the forest landscape around the Alpl brings the visitor to the place where the Styrian writer Peter Rosegger spent his childhood.

Austria’s largest open-air museum unfolds in the special atmosphere of a nature reserve north of Graz.

The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing shows historical houses in landscapes from Burgenland to Vorarlberg and South Tyrol reaching back six centuries. When walking through the museum valley, visitors gain insight into the life, work and festivities of the peasant population from the old days. Exhibitions, courses and educational offerings enable you to experience first-hand the everyday life of our forefathers; also, they pass on knowledge of old craft techniques. This year’s exhibition titled Precious Junk – Collected (Hi-)Stories is devoted 28 to daily objects from those times, which, as precious museum artefacts, open up new perspectives for our own future.

The Kluppeneggerhof reminds us of the simple living conditions into which Peter Rosegger was born in 1843 and which he described in his writings: cooking took place over the hearth in the open fire kitchen, the central parlour served both for eating and sleeping purposes, and for working in. Besides the home, there are stables, a barn, a rural storehouse and a dried flaxen hut.

Institute for Art in Public Space Styria

The mission of the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria is to initiate and support art projects in both analogue and digital space.

Accordingly, location-specific artworks are created by regional and international artists, as well as competitions and symposia, in Graz and the regions of Styria. Art in Public Space contributes to the negotiation of social questions from new perspectives. The most varied disciplines are considered such as the visual and performing arts, literature, music, architectural approaches and interdisciplinary art forms of the present.

Whenever sculpture and nature encounter one another, a fascinating dialogue is the result. As the seasons change, so the interplay between the artworks and their surroundings changes, too.

Just seven kilometres south of Graz, a unique art museum can be found in the open air: more than 80 sculptures by Austrian and international artists can evolve anew throughout the year in the spacious landscape architecture of the Austrian Sculpture Park.
