The Natural History Museum in the Joanneumsviertel invites visitors on a varied tour through the history of the earth and bio-diversity in Styria.
Titled ‘Diversity of Life’, SHOWING STYRIA 2023 at the Herberstein Animal World focuses on the preservation of species and habitat diversity, as well as measures to counter climate change, as great challenges of our age. A mobile pavilion also awakens interest in these important themes beyond our province’s borders.
In 2023, too, long past habitats and landscapes can be explored in the show The Search for Traces … Through the Earth’s History. Afterwards, the focus is on microscopically small structures. Spores are produced by fungi (including lichens), algae, mosses and ferns. Large-format, microscopic photographs, videos, models and preparations offer insight into the fascinating diversity of spore forms.

Herberstein Animal World 8 Go on a fresh-air safari across the continents and observe animals both domestic and exotic — almost like in the wild! More than 90 animal species from every continent live in the Herberstein Animal World. The proud peacock takes you with him to the exotic diversity of Asia, where you can explore Nepal with the Red Panda. Europe, too, contains many surprises with the fallow deer or the lynx. We then head towards the far north, with the Arctic wolf, and on to the prairies of North America with the herds of bison, to South America with the cotton-top tamarin and to the heights of the Andes with the Alpaca. Emus and kangaroos allow you to encounter far-off Australia close-up, before you then meet the ‘king of animals’ — Caesar the lion and his family — and finally to sprint through the savannah 22 with the zebras. Rosegger’s Birthplace 9 Alpl A walk through the forest landscape around the Alpl brings the visitor to the place where the Styrian writer Peter Rosegger spent his childhood.
The new House of Biodiversity in the Herberstein Animal World with its many hands-on stations invites visitors to experience the wonder of nature’s diversity, raising awareness of the important benefits that intact natural cycles provide for us. The adjacent Feistritzklamm Nature Reserve offers the opportunity to combine the visit to the exhibition with outdoor experiences of nature. Five 23 outposts in the Herberstein Animal World that have been integrated into the landscape guide the gaze toward the diversity of habitats and natural networks. Rosegger’s Museum 10 Krieglach Peter Rosegger spent autumn and winter in Graz, yet in the summer months from 1877 onwards he quenched his yearning for his rural upbringing in this country home. In Rosegger’s former retreat, everyday objects belonging to the author offer interesting insights into his life – also going beyond romantic clichés, for example, as in the exhibition Whom does the Großglockner belong to?

The rooms in which the author worked and died have remained intact since his death in 1918, allowing authentic glimpses into Rosegger’s private lifestyle. To mark Rosegger’s 180th birthday, the special exhibition Do Poets Grow on Trees Here? Visiting Peter Rosegger tells of friends and admirers such as Hans and Gina von Reininghaus, the sculptor Hans Brandstetter and the composer Johannes Brahms, who visited the writer in his Krieglach summer house.
The mobile pavilion of SHOWING STYRIA spans an arc from the regional to the planetary, increasing awareness of what surrounds as a matter of course: atmospheres. With contributions from artists and stations featuring research into the climate and space, the exhibition in the pavilion opens up undreamed-of perspectives! The Kluppeneggerhof reminds us of the simple living conditions into which Peter Rosegger was born in 1843 and which he described in his writings: cooking took place over the hearth in the openfire kitchen, the central parlour served both for eating and sleeping purposes, as well as for working in. Besides the home, there are stables, a barn, a rural storehouse and a dried flaxen hut.
