Styrian Armory 1 The largest preserved armoury in the world is among the most popular tourist attractions in Graz and reminds us of a conflict-ridden chapter in Styrian history.

In her new exhibition Isa Rosenberger takes a look at history writing using artistic means, while Ingrid Wiener and Martin Roth devote themselves to researching the term ‘environ4 ment’. Body and Territory talks of the body as a medium of radical art forms, while Plamen Dejanoff transfers historical knowledge to new artworks with his Heritage Project.

The high point of 2023 is the show Re-Imagine the Future to mark the 20th anniversary of the Kunsthaus Graz, with old acquaintances in new contexts!

The Styrian Armoury was created in turbulent times: from the 15th to the 18th century, Styria many times had to fend off attacks by the Ottoman Empire and Hungarian rebels.

Built in 1642–44, the armoury served for around 100 years as the ‘central arsenal’ for simple infantrymen and soldiers on horseback. Today it is a memorial and museum at the same time: some 32,000 arms and weapons are on display in the Styrian Armoury in their historical layout.

Indeed, the Kunsthaus is already an attraction by its appearance alone, yet it’s worth getting to know its inner life, too: in its ‘Spaces’, exhibitions can be seen with international contemporary art that tackle social issues and global trends. The luminous BIX facade communicates towards the River Mur and the inner city, while the museum’s ‘Needle’ is a popular viewing platform.

Archaeology Museum 5a

The Alte Galerie presents masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century, including masterworks by Michael Pacher, Jan and Pieter Brueghel, Bartholomäus Spranger, Lukas Cranach, Jan Steen or Pieter Claesz. The presentation of the collection, Between Dance and Death, shows the glory and misery of the Early Modern Period— enriched by loans from the Kaiserschild Foundation.

Unique finds such as the Cult Wagon of Strettweg or the Mask of Kleinklein encourage us to investigate forms of life in the past.

Modern technology establishes a bridge to the past: the special exhibition Stories from the Past invites visitors to delve virtually into lost worlds of the Danube region.

Special finds in the Danube region such as the Iron Age settlement at Großklein or the Roman municipium Flavia Solva have been digitally reconstructed for this.

Schloss Eggenberg 5 The UNESCO World Heritage Site Schloss Eggenberg invites you to take a range of trips through time: from the highly symbolic architecture of the princely residence to the art treasures of the Alte Galerie and the sparkling Coin Cabinet, through to the mysterious traces of life to be found in the Archaeology Museum.

Flavia Solva 7 Archaeology in South Styria! During antiquity, Flavia Solva was one of the most cultivated centres in the Roman province of Noricum.

The archaeological site shows the extent of Flavia Solva at the time and important finds. Showcasing the Roman Period is on show from June 2023 onwards under the motto Solva à la Carte and examines the question of what the inhabitants of the Roman municipium ate, how they prepared their dishes and whether take-away food already existed at the time.

History Museum 3 At the heart of the History Museum lie the ways in which Styria has evolved and transformed itself from the High Middle Ages to the present.

The ways in which Styria has changed over the last 900 years are explored in the show 100 × Styria. The Schaudepot (show depot) demonstrates the variety of the cultural-historical and multi-medial collections.

Titled Periods of Change, the main exhibition in the present year is dedicated to social upheaval and transformational processes. As ever, Styria takes centre stage, with the time line stretching from the Middle Ages to the present day.

An exciting mix in the throbbing heart of Graz: modern and contemporary art can be seen in the Neue Galerie Graz and in the central square of the Joanneumsviertel. Experiences of nature and the adventure that is science can be experienced in the Natural History Museum and in the CoSA. Finally, reading material in abundance is available in the Styrian State Library.

The Hofgalerie with The Sound of St. Lambrecht invites visitors until June to delve acoustically into the Benedictine Abbey there. In the second half of the year, the Women Pickers of Erzberg present a piece of Styrian economic history.

Delve into the world of natural sciences and technology — in the new Center of Science Activities in the Joanneumsviertel.

Art from the 19th century to the present and a museum dedicated to the multi-genre artist Günter Brus are what make the Neue Galerie Graz a special experience.

Folk Life Museum 4 at the Paulustor The newly arranged museum invites visitors to engage further and on different levels with the lives, self-conception and self-images of those who live in Styria. Three special exhibitions take up themes of great social relevance: The complex effects of migration processes on people’s life-stories are examined in the exhibition Identity on the Line. Now in the Right offers current insight into the Gleichbehandlungsanwaltschaft (Advocacy of Equal Rights) founded 30 years ago, and Lustful Gaze throws a cultural-anthropological look at pornography as a pop-cultural medium – a theme that has gained momentum again due to the prohibition on meeting others during the pandemic.

The Neue Galerie Graz is among the most important Austrian museums for modern and contemporary art. Besides solo shows of prominent Austrian and international artists, main topics are addressed in changing exhibitions using the wide-ranging collection as a basis.

With Franz Steinfeld and his son Wilhelm, the Neue Galerie Graz devotes itself to realistic landscape painting in early 19th century Austria, which developed alongside the emergence of tourism. The exhibition Seriously?

Silliness and Enthusiasm in Art explores artistic phenomena since the beginning of Modernism which have deliberately positioned themselves in opposition to the often-dogmatic trends in art, permeated with socio-political visions, of 19th and 20th century art. The Promotion Prize of the State of Styria for Contemporary Visual Arts highlights the domestic art scene.

Try it out and have a go: this is the motto of the CoSA, the Center of Science Activities. Practical examples that can be applied, interactive adventures and many surprising experiences all to do with science and technology stimulate and encourage youngsters from 12 upwards to experiment time and again.

The new Escape Room at the CoSA promises fun doing tricky puzzles: research teams of max. six people have to work through three areas of the historical display mine in order to reach daylight again. By solving the tasks, visitors learn interesting facts about resources of the past, present and future.

The BRUSEUM functions as an independent collecting, research and exhibition arm of the Neue Galerie Graz dedicated to the life and work of the world-famous Styrian multigenre artist Günter Brus (born 1938). In its exhibitions, the BRUSEUM shows not only works by Brus himself, but also those by artists who have shaped and accompanied him. This year’s special exhibition is devoted to the eventful life of Anna Brus, the companion and wife of many years to Günter Brus, who is also regarded as the ‘muse of Actionists’.

The Natural History Museum in the Joanneumsviertel invites visitors on a varied tour through the history of the earth and bio-diversity in Styria.

Titled ‘Diversity of Life’, SHOWING STYRIA 2023 at the Herberstein Animal World focuses on the preservation of species and habitat diversity, as well as measures to counter climate change, as great challenges of our age. A mobile pavilion also awakens interest in these important themes beyond our province’s borders.

In 2023, too, long past habitats and landscapes can be explored in the show The Search for Traces … Through the Earth’s History. Afterwards, the focus is on microscopically small structures. Spores are produced by fungi (including lichens), algae, mosses and ferns. Large-format, microscopic photographs, videos, models and preparations offer insight into the fascinating diversity of spore forms.

Herberstein Animal World 8 Go on a fresh-air safari across the continents and observe animals both domestic and exotic — almost like in the wild!

More than 90 animal species from every continent live in the Herberstein Animal World. The proud peacock takes you with him to the exotic diversity of Asia, where you can explore Nepal with the Red Panda. Europe, too, contains many surprises with the fallow deer or the lynx. We then head towards the far north, with the Arctic wolf, and on to the prairies of North America with the herds of bison, to South America with the cotton-top tamarin and to the heights of the Andes with the Alpaca. Emus and kangaroos allow you to encounter far-off Australia close-up, before you then meet the ‘king of animals’ — Caesar the lion and his family — and finally to sprint through the savannah 22 with the zebras.

Rosegger’s Birthplace 9 Alpl A walk through the forest landscape around the Alpl brings the visitor to the place where the Styrian writer Peter Rosegger spent his childhood.

The new House of Biodiversity in the Herberstein Animal World with its many hands-on stations invites visitors to experience the wonder of nature’s diversity, raising awareness of the important benefits that intact natural cycles provide for us. The adjacent Feistritzklamm Nature Reserve offers the opportunity to combine the visit to the exhibition with outdoor experiences of nature. Five 23 outposts in the Herberstein Animal World that have been integrated into the landscape guide the gaze toward the diversity of habitats and natural networks.

Rosegger’s Museum 10 Krieglach Peter Rosegger spent autumn and winter in Graz, yet in the summer months from 1877 onwards he quenched his yearning for his rural upbringing in this country home.

In Rosegger’s former retreat, everyday objects belonging to the author offer interesting insights into his life – also going beyond romantic clichés, for example, as in the exhibition Whom does the Großglockner belong to?

The rooms in which the author worked and died have remained intact since his death in 1918, allowing authentic glimpses into Rosegger’s private lifestyle. To mark Rosegger’s 180th birthday, the special exhibition Do Poets Grow on Trees Here? Visiting Peter Rosegger tells of friends and admirers such as Hans and Gina von Reininghaus, the sculptor Hans Brandstetter and the composer Johannes Brahms, who visited the writer in his Krieglach summer house.

The mobile pavilion of SHOWING STYRIA spans an arc from the regional to the planetary, increasing awareness of what surrounds as a matter of course: atmospheres.

With contributions from artists and stations featuring research into the climate and space, the exhibition in the pavilion opens up undreamed-of perspectives!

The Kluppeneggerhof reminds us of the simple living conditions into which Peter Rosegger was born in 1843 and which he described in his writings: cooking took place over the hearth in the openfire kitchen, the central parlour served both for eating and sleeping purposes, as well as for working in. Besides the home, there are stables, a barn, a rural storehouse and a dried flaxen hut.

An unforgettable hike through the valley of history (and stories), and a fascinating annual exhibition offer insight into six centuries of Austrian and south Tyrolian cultural history.

Life as it once was: over 100 historic vernacular buildings are on display in the Austrian Open-Air Museum, most of them original historical buildings.

The walk through the museum valley offers an overview of the historical landscapes in terms of houses as found in Austrian provinces. Traditional work, historic crafts and customs from about six centuries, historic gardens, meadows and fields convey an interesting exploration of our ancestors’ everyday life.

Exhibitions focus on specific issues, courses convey historic skills, cultural mediation and events try to offer pragmatic synergies between past and present experience.

In the Landscape Museum in Schloss Trautenfels, characteristic themes of regional culture and nature blend into a multifaceted kaleidoscope. But the building, whose history reaches back to the 13th century, surprises with historical and contemporary architectural highlights too. Anyone who climbs the publicly accessible viewing tower is rewarded with a splendid view of the central Ennstal and surrounding mountains.

This year, too, the special exhibition The Art of Healing presents an overview that ranges from the medicine of antiquity through folk medicine to medicine in monasteries, reaching up to the present day, reflecting the extent to which medical care is dependent upon political, economic, social and technological developments. One focal point of this transdisciplinary project is medical care in Styria, especially the district of Liezen, from the 18th century to the present.

The Institute develops and facilitates permanent and temporary artworks by regional, national and international artists in Graz and the regions of Styria, as well as competitions and symposia. Art in Public Space helps in understanding social questions from new perspectives.

A great variety of disciplines is considered, including the visual and performing arts, literature, music and architecture, and interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged. Installations are also on show at several sites of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, for example, in the Joanneumsviertel. The newly developed, interactive navigation app ‘Art in Public Space Styria’ allows you to experience fully the art installations and sculptures in public space in Styria.

A life without electricity is practically unimaginable these days. Yet at any moment it could happen that we are suddenly without electrical current.

The annual exhibition With or Without Electricity – Life like in the Old Days running from 14.05. to 31.10.2023 offers a look back to the past, when life without electricity was daily reality. The exhibition ranges from cooking on an open fire, different kinds of lighting fixtures, different ways to conserve and store supplies, to old handiwork techniques using hand-operated tools and changes in the landscape.

Institute for Art in Public Space

Whenever sculpture and nature encounter one another, a fascinating dialogue is the result. As the seasons change, so the interplay between the artworks and their surroundings changes, too.

At Austria’s largest Hunting Museum, the cultural phenomenon of hunting can be explored, as can nature in all its diversity. The Agriculture Museum is devoted to Styria’s agricultural and forest economies.

With its historical weapons, splendid artworks and handicraft objects, as well as many opportunities to learn more about wildlife and their habitats, the Hunting Museum appeals not only to hunters. The Agriculture Museum spans a survey of peasant life in the pre-industrial era right up to the agricultural challenges of the modern day.
