The Styrian Armoury was created in turbulent times: from the 15th to the 18th century, Styria many times had to fend off attacks by the Ottoman Empire and Hungarian rebels.

Built in 1642–44, the armoury served for around 100 years as the ‘central arsenal’ for simple infantrymen and soldiers on horseback. Today it is a memorial and museum at the same time: some 32,000 arms and weapons are on display in the Styrian Armoury in their historical layout.

History Museum

At the heart of the History Museum lie the ways in which Styria has evolved and transformed itself from the High Middle Ages to the present.

As a location of SHOWING STYRIA, the History Museum is focused on how it was. With a look at medieval monasteries, Graz Castle or the industrial area around Donawitz, we show that history takes place not only in time, but also in space.

How Styria has changed over the last 900 years can also be explored in the exhibition 100 x Styria. Its highlights include the ‘Styrian Ducal Hat’, which adorns the Styrian coat of arms, too.

The showcase (Schaudepot) presents the variety of the culturalhistorical and multimedia collections, the exhibition Bertl & Adele recalls the fate of two children from Graz in the Holocaust.

Furthermore, the jewellery art of Wolfgang Rahs is presented as part of the showcase, while the multimedia collections show an exhibition with works of the Graz photographer Eugen Hauber (1896–1987).

Kunsthaus Graz

The architectural landmark of Graz fills its guests with enthusiasm for contemporary art and an unforgettable view of the old town!

The Kunsthaus is indeed an attraction from outside, yet it’s worth getting to know its interior life, too: in its ‘Spaces’ there are exhibitions of international contemporary art on show, which tackle current social themes and global trends.

The luminous BIX façade communicates towards the River Mur and the inner city, while the ‘Needle’ of the building is a popular viewing platform.

Folk Life Museum

As part of SHOWING STYRIA, the Folk Life Museum, in an entirely new permanent exhibition, undertakes a survey of the present social situation in Styria. This is linked to the self-perception and self-images of this region and those who live or stay here, or have some other connection to it.

There have always been periods in which people have been confronted by change or have seen themselves threatened by various crises. Precisely these challenges promote reflection and stimulate creative solutions.

The Folk Life Museum shows how people communicate in such situations, how they act or join up with others to focus on their concerns. This ‘changing world’ can be experienced in the exhibition how it is, as part of SHOWING STYRIA.

Neue Galerie Graz

The Neue Galerie Graz is among the most important Austrian museums for modern and contemporary art. Besides solo shows of prominent Austrian and international artists, main topics are addressed in changing exhibitions using the wide-ranging collection as a basis.

As already happening with the show Ladies First! the Neue Galerie Graz will continue in 2021 to put greater emphasis on women artists, showing Aspects of the Feminine in Contemporary Art from the mid1960s. Those Art Controversies, waged from 1945 through to the late 1960s between defenders of the avantgarde and ‘traditionbound’ artists, can be discovered as extensively as can the uncompromising work of Croatian artist Julije Knifer.

Further exhibitions are devoted to the artists Martin Walde and Josef Pillhofer. The exhibition showcasing the Promotion Prize of the Province of Styria for Contemporary Fine Arts offers insight into the current art scene, as does the Art Space Styria.

Art from the 19th century to the present and a museum dedicated to the multi-genre artist Günter Brus are what make the Neue Galerie Graz a special experience.

As a central element of SHOWING STYRIA, a mobile pavilion will tour through Styria in 2021. It covers the various regions of the province, telling the story of Styria as a region of art and artistic research, through a large-format panorama of moving images.

Take an architectural tour when no exhibitions are on show

Styria is always described as a region of diversity, a reference to its highly variegated nature and cultural landscape, as well as to the high number of prominent artistic positions. As part of SHOWING STYRIA, an exceptional overview of landscapes under analysis is presented in the form of moving images.

Mainly young Styrian artists have taken fascinating looks at Styria for the monumental, panoramic display, which, titled who we are, offer insights into and surveys of the varied regional landscape, both in terms of art and innovation.

The bio-diversity found in the cultural landscape, the linguistic variety and contaminated landscapes are also examined.

Joanneumsviertel

An exciting mix in the throbbing heart of Graz: modern and contemporary art is on show at the Neue Galerie Graz and in the central square of the Joanneumsviertel.

You can experience science in a variety of interesting ways at the Natural History Museum and in the CoSA. With the motto Ready? Go! in LET’S GO GRAZ, the Graz Year of Sports focuses on the relationship between sport and technology in the CoSA and the Visitors’ Centre located in the Joanneumsviertel.

Mobile Pavilion

Another exhibition shows ideas by students of architecture in Graz, who re-stage the historical Folk Life Museum building in line with the motto What if? … with no restrictions for the planning in terms of ideas and guidelines.

For the first version of SHOWING STYRIA, the Kunsthaus Graz dedicates itself to the question of what will be. On show are a variety of ideas as to how various futures for Styria could look. The exhibition places particular emphasis on such themes as mobility, digitalisation, logistics and agriculture, as well as migration and gender equality, as reflected in art, too. Moreover, a solo show of the Danish group of artists SUPERFLEX investigates the social consequences of capitalism, and the artists Johanna and Helmu­­t Kandl pursue the question of where paints, pigments and bindin­­g agents in paintings come from.

BRUSEUM, Neue Galerie Graz

Alte Galerie

The Alte Galerie presents masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century, including masterworks by Michael Pacher, Jan and Pieter Brueghel, Bartholomäus Spranger, Lukas Cranach, Jan Steen or Pieter Claesz. The presentation of the collection, Between Dance and Death, shows the glory and misery of the Early Modern Period – enriched by loans from the Kaiserschild Foundation.

The BRUSEUM functions as an independent collecting, research and exhibition arm of the Neue Galerie Graz dedicated to the life and work of the world-famous Styrian multigenre artist Günter Brus (born 1938). In its exhibitions, the BRUSEUM shows not only works by Brus himself, but also those by artists who have shaped and accompanied him. The special exhibitions mounted by the BRUSEUM in 2021 show the versatile work of Dominik Steiger, as well as a selection of Picture-Poems by Günter Brus and artistic works created by Brus jointly with Alfons Schilling in the period around 1960.

Natural History Museum

Fascinating insights into the variety of species as well as into the ways of living and social behaviour of ants found in Styria are on show in the Natural History Museum’s special exhibitions, as is a multifaceted show all about the highly prized precious metal, Gold.

Besides Stefano della Bella’s allegory The Great Death, and Jacques Callot’s famous series The Great Miseries of War, paintings, books and culturalhistorical objects are exhibited.

Practical examples of application, interactive adventures and many surprising ways to experience the natural sciences and technology stimulate inquisitive minds from the age of 12 to constantly experiment.

What’s more, the show titled MISSION POSSIBLE! shows how know-how from Graz helps in the exploration of space.

With a new special exhibition, the Alte Galerie is additionally offering further insights into the in-house collection of prints: graphics prints from the Early Modern Period allow us to dip into an epoch shaped by war, providing a powerful image of the effects of war on the region and its people.

Adding to the varied permanent exhibition, the Coin Cabinet shows Salzburg Gold Coins from the collection of the Bankhaus Spängler, Austria’s oldest banking institution. This includes the coinages of all the territorial sovereigns, from Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495–1519) to Elector Ferdinand (1803–1805). This splendid selection is rounded off with Salzburg coinages from the Coin Cabinet collection.

Archaeology Museum

Unique finds such as the Cult Wagon of Strettweg or the Mask of Kleinklein encourage us to investigate forms of life in the past.

A museum that is much more than skin-deep! Archaeological gems from Styria, yet also finds from Classical Antiquity and Egypt inspire us to reflect on those questions that have concerned mankind since time immemorial.

The current special exhibition at the Archaeology Museum shows fascinating insights into an elevated Roman holy place on Schöckl Mountain, which was located at the eastern summit of Graz’s local mountain. It consisted of a cultic building from the 2nd – 3rd century and of several minor consecration places. One of them has yielded remarkable finds, such as glass bangles, colourful glass beads, coins and small figures from the 3rd and 4th century, which are on show in the Archaeology Museum for the first time.

The Kluppeneggerhof reminds us of the simple living conditions into which Peter Rosegger was born in 1843 and which he described in his writings: cooking took place over the hearth in the openfire kitchen, the central parlour served both for eating and sleeping purposes, as well as for working in. Besides the home, there are stables, a barn, a rural storehouse and a dried flaxen hut.

Rosegger’s Museum Krieglach

It belongs to the top ten open-air museums in Europe, offering a comprehensive image of peasant life in days gone by: 100 buildings are on show in the Austrian Open-Air Museum, most of them original historical structures.

The walk through the museum valley offers an overview of the historical landscapes in terms of houses as found in Austrian provinces. The exhibitions and events provide interesting facts about building, living and working, as well as regional customs.

Peter Rosegger spent autumn and winter in Graz, yet in the summer months from 1877 onwards he quenched his yearning for his rural upbringing in this country home.

In Rosegger’s former retreat, everyday objects belonging to the author offer interesting insights into his life – also going beyond romantic clichés, for example, as in the exhibition Whom does the Großglockner belong to?

Archaeology in South Styria! During antiquity, Flavia Solva was one of the most cultivated centres in the Roman province of Noricum.

The archaeological site shows the original extent of the Roman town and important finds. The pavilion building is presented as a large display case accessible from outside – as a showcase of the Roman Period.

In the outdoor area, the foundation walls of the Insula XXII-East can be visited, with shafts made of sheet steel illustrating the lines of the right-angled blocks of houses.

The rooms in which the author worked and died have remained intact since his death in 1918, allowing authentic glimpses into Rosegger’s private lifestyle. The notion of ‘Waldheimat’ (forest home) coined by Peter Rosegger forms the starting point for the special exhibition wald.heimat. It pursues the question of what role the forest played when Rosegger was alive, what functions it has today and what Rosegger knew about the forest and its inhabitants.

Schloss Trautenfels excites visitors with exhibitions on the cultural and natural history of the Styrian Ennstal and Ausseerland – and a fantastic view!

The mission of the Institute for Art in Public Space in Styria: to initiate and support art projects in both analogue and digital space.

In the Landscape Museum in Schloss Trautenfels, characteristic themes of regional culture and nature blend into a multifaceted kaleidoscope. But the building, whose history reaches back to the 13th century, surprises with historical and contemporary architectural highlights, too.

Anyone who climbs the publicly accessible viewing tower is rewarded with a splendid view of the central Ennstal and surrounding mountains.

Hunting Museum and Agriculture Museum Schloss Stainz 12 25

Peak Pioneers!, the current special exhibition, enables fascinating insight into those adventurous trips undertaken

by Styrian mountaineers to the highest summits in the world – for example, Robert Schauer, who in 1978 became one of the first Austrians to scale Mount Everest.

With exciting stories and a large selection of original objects, this show allows us to feel a time in which there were still white spots on maps.

Tip for ‘summiteers’: experience a virtual expedition to Mount Everest with the VR glasses!

At Austria’s largest Hunting Museum, the cultural phenomenon of hunting can be explored, as can nature in all its diversity. The Agriculture Museum is devoted to Styria’s agricultural and forest economies.

With its historical weapons, splendid artworks and handicraft objects, as well as many opportunities to learn more about wildlife and their habitats, the Hunting Museum appeals not only to hunters. The Agriculture Museum spans a survey of peasant life in the pre-industrial era right up to the agricultural challenges of the modern day.

In 2021, too, the Hunting Museum highlights the female side of hunting: from the mythical hunting goddess Diana to the female hunters of today, the exhibition Hunting is Female traces a wide arc.

Current findings on reproductive behaviour are presented in the show, while with the picture cycle Diana and Actaeon by Styrian artist Gerald Brettschuh, art is highlighted, too.

Just seven kilometres south of Graz, a unique art museum can be found in the open air: more than 75 sculptures by Austrian and international artists can unfold again and again in the generous landscaped architecture of the Austrian Sculpture Park throughout the year.

Highlights include works by Nancy Rubins, Erwin Wurm, Werner Reiterer and Yoko Ono, which can be experienced in the special atmosphere of the Spring Celebration and the Late Summer Celebration.

Accordingly, location-related works by regional and international artists are created, as are competitions and symposia in Graz and the regions of Styria.

Art in the public space helps negotiate social questions from new perspectives. The most varied disciplines are thereby considered, including the visual and performing arts, literature, music, architectural approaches and inter-disciplinary art forms of the present. Works are also on show at several Universalmuseum Joanneum sites – such as in the Joanneumsviertel, for example, and in the History Museum.
